u dont live in nyc
buncho buy me icecream
no
ryc can literally buy me ice cream
i owe ange an ice cream
Yeah but I'll visit and it'll be an occasion
and i still will not buy him ice cream
you owe ME an ice cream
ill buy u ice cream
wait
epic
Oh do you guys know Braum's?
john come to nyc
For ice cream?
remembering the time someone on AGS bought me a pizza
They're p good
ange's the one with all the disposable income
didnt i promise to buy dinner for one of you
the main thing i remember about nyc is there was a good shake shack
i do plan to visit at some point to nc
ange's buying me ice cream if he comes to NYC
I got a new credit card
nyc*
It is fancy
always dreamed of nyc since i was child
can colleges please stop sending me random emails
No
did you put your real email on the SAT
it happens again for grad schools moth
this will not stop until after the first year of college
it's so bad

Wait I never got college emails
i got an email in grad school asking me to apply for undergrad at the university of utah
the solution is to spam email the colleges as revenge
it never stops
i started filtering the emails
Theyve been spamming me since freshman year but now im getting multiple per day
i unsubscribed from many
mostly from ualbany and the clarkson school
discussion-2 is so much more comfy
wait there's a discussion 2
ange's talking about anime boys in discussion
We are in discussion 2
I think I forgot to check the box in the SAT that says to not share your info with unis or whatever
when you have good facial structure and can control time
and I got spammed with so much shit from random christian colleges
yeah #discussion is just filled with weebs rn
yeah same lol
except also other religious colleges
there was one in ny that was especially bad
i dont know why
i mean idk
the thrill of getting a few emails from the good schools
was very satisfying
and made it worth it
wow i never got an email lmao
It doesnt ryc
they dont want me
I have self esteem
even though it was really annoying to get all the garbage emails

ange are these all ORV emotes
No
wow that's a good emote
yes but always nice to have validation smh
i just liked getting the physical products from schools that had good graphic designers
any pamphlets or guides that were aesthetically pleasing i kept

Yeah I got spammed so hard by colleges lmfao
If this server wanted to could a book be written? To teach math
?
Everyone banding together for writing a concise yet informative mathematical text
about what
Just seems like there's so much brainpower here. Everyone's quite smart.
Everything
im sorry to dissapoint you
I'm doing the intro to abstract algebra section
So the problem is everyone kinda does different stuff
And coordination is hard in general
^
a book that taught you every single concept up to, say undergrad level would probably be tens of thousands of pages long
@deep mango what do you think about Hammack's Proofs book?
i am not ryc but i did read enough of it to determine that it was okay at best
but this is how all intro proofs books are gonna be
just Okay
you do not need to waste too much time reading them
at least this book is very fast to read so it's better in a sense
why do you need a proofs book bro just figure it out
so true... how do you proof the proofs?? checkermate
The server is already a book haha. Search something you want, and you'll likely find a good convo attached to it
the agony
i look so.... different...

piss eyes piss name
wtf (what the frick) rude!!!
who cares about honorable the real goal is to get into
omg that's my discord status what a crazy coinkidink
they callin me sus.,.. they makin a fuss... we playin.... among us....
hold on I got a better one
🉐
🌶️
Will eat a habanero next time
Im finished with reaper hot sauces
Capsceascin galore
so just reading it would hurt.
it's only 300 pages right?
if the material is easy enough to comprehend that you can quickly read 300 pages you probably dont need to read an intro to proofs book
I don't know about you, but I like math that's practical and makes things easier to visualize or explain
Pure math is a beast of its own

I agree with you
This is why number theory is the best math
Most of my profs specialize in topology
ok how do you visualize fermat's little theorem
riemannian geometry is adjacent to general relativity and that's physics so id say it's pretty practical huh
See some examples
spec(Z)
I mean you specifically
Idek what fermat's little thm even says
wot
a^(p-1) = 1 mod p
thought you just said number theory is the best math because it's practical and makes things easier to visualize
I think he was trolling
Oh that's just order of a group
🤨
Number theory is practical because we are intrinsically interested in number theoretic problems
As human beings

Stats was invented very recently

Lmao
probability was invented in the 1700's
Damn apperantly probability was introduced in 1654
Probability was introduced by pascal
ok but you have to prove pascal understood probability
I'm not a necromancer
Yeah nevermind de Moivre was a bit later
I thought accounting was stats
Or a subset of it
You are right
Actuaries calculate risks
Or try to predict what can happen in the future
With data given
Life insurance is a very interesting idea
It's the sort of thing that only makes sense on a large scale
Which I think is pretty neat

why was that removed

A dramatic and high-stakes anime
"I don't know how to trust anyone"
Gasp
"I'm going to trust you"
Gasp
Stop watching this trash
Tan-Sasa-Za-Nery
ange did u figure out the two linearly independent solutions via power series
my class just got to power series and now i know how to extract them
lol
ok
If I keep up my pace
I'm on 3.5 on Boyce and DiPrima right now
Method of Undetermined Coefficients
Also known as
"Guessing"
Method
lmao
Analysis has a lot of methods
undetermined coefficients is so cursed
They're methods and not theorems because it involves guessing
Variation of parameters isn't going to be any better
variation of paramters is a little more work most of the time
you want to use undetermined coefficients 80 percent of the time
Computational ODE is a disaster of pedagogy
yeah
It's peak "who cares"
it's kind of horrifying how a lot of it is just
computational ODE is a disaster
Yeah
Make it better
There have been lots of manifestos about the subject
my professor is nice in that he spends time motivating the algorithm but in the end
i still have to memorize the algorithm
cus that's just how it is
write a GTM
at least for by-hand analytical computations
I wonder if springer sends you a free copy
Graduate YouTube videos in Mathematics
in any case angetenar undetermined coefficients is better seen as like
moving from an inhomogeneous system to another system that is homogeneous
but you have to go back and fix extra coefficients because the original inhomogeneous system can only have so many free parameters
still yucky
You have a linear differential operator
You find a basis for its null space
Then you find whatever adjustment you need to
By guessing what form the adjustment will take
"The lecturer at this point will warn the students that they cannot possibly understand such higher
mathematics, and will order them to take the method at face value, since “it works.” Lecturers

Yes.
depends on the topology

Undergrad ODE is a disaster
I don't know if there's a way to redeem it

Tsundere ace expresses positive emotion for the first time
That was a really nicely animated scene
set me back several years in my career in mathematics. However, it had a redeeming feature: it
led me to realize that I had no idea what a differential equation is. The more I teach differential
equations, the less I understand the mystery of differential equations.```
I will wait several years before even thinking about an ODE book
into writing a textbook, and how negatively such an effort is rewarded. No clear-headed young
mathematician will risk ruining his or her career by writing such a book, as I did.
The sophomore course in differential equations will never be reformed. It wil```
Berkeley doesn't have an intro ode class really
There's one that's taught as an upper division course
But it isn't computational in nature I don't think
Honestly
I don't even know why non-math people should be learning ODE theory
And if they are, it should be in a numerics framework
At Stony Brook its called Calc 4
Because that's how the ode is going to be solved
Like
ODE solvers are so good
That you can literally black-box them
With a few exceptions
Hamiltonian systems being one
Stiffness considerations being the other

Especially in intro/low level courses?
It's because of Inertia. We've always been doing this
Yeah
i still dont remember anything i learned from my first ode course
and i would like to keep it that way
it works because we tried it out and found it works
Unless you want to start talking about spectral theory of compact self-adjoint differential operators
guess and hope it works is a valid strategy
It's really just emotions
Is Sturm-Liouville theory even good for anything
"All second-order linear ordinary differential equations can be reduced to this form."
I guess that's why it matters
They're already linear though
Man I was supposed to taks my Math SAT Subject Test on saturday but my test centre closed
nope
Did u study for it?
ya the whole of last month
It doesn't matter much anyway, just do good on ur sat math section
"the one-dimensional time-independent Schrödinger equation is a S-L problem."
i already got that sorted
but the college im applying to
requires sat subject test scores
What did you get on the sat?
1550
You have a reason for why you couldn't take it
Nice
That's a good score im sure they'll accept you unless you have a bad gpa
What is your gpa?
high 3.9
yeah i hope they arent petty lol
Time independent Schrodinger is just fancy Laplace anyways

what is krnocker delta
i remember not understanding it in analysis
and some bs about it being a distribution not a funciton
freak
You're thinking about the dirac delta
$\delta_{mn}=\begin{cases}1&m=n\0&m\neq n\end{cases}$
Apostle of Epilogue and Eternity
This is the Kronecker delta
It's the indicator function of the diagonal
oh

infinite identity matrix?
Well you can use it with as many indices as you like I guess
So
Sure
Anyway, dirac delta is the """function""" which is infinity at 0 and 1 elsewhere
Which just means its the measure whose mass is all concentrated at 0
No, those are a different thing
Probability distributions are not the same thing as analysis distributions
they are both measures?
In analysis, distribution means "linear functional on a space of functions"
Continuous linear functional to be exact
a functional?
Usually it means linear functional on the space of smooth compactly supported functions
Yeah just a linear map from the space to the base field
can i get an example
like it takes in a point in R3
and gives something in R?
f:R^3->R is a functional?
No, it takes arbitrary "test functions" (smooth compactly supported functions is one example of what you take to be the test functions), and spits out real/complex numbers.
and it does so linearly and continuously.
a simple example is the functional $T_\psi:\phi \mapsto \int \phi\psi$ for a fixed choice of locally integrable function $\psi$.
gomez
locally integrable?
what does locally add to it
and im assuming phi is just any function?
integrable over any compact set, so it might grow wildly at infinity but that is okay.
eg x^2 is a locally integrable function on R
phi is your test function, i.e. a smooth compactly supported function
because it is compactly supported, it doesn't matter if psi gets huge at infinity.
smooth means infinitely differentiable?
oh
locally integrable means integrable over compact sets
that makes sense now
so what makes it a functional
all those properties?
or wait the example you gave was a distribution in analysis
The definition of a functional on a vector space V is just a linear map T:V->F, F being the scalar field. If the vector space has a topology too (like the space of test functions does), then you usually are only interested in the continuous functionals.
The example I gave is indeed a continuous functional on the space of test functions, and so is a distribution in the sense of analysis.
And as such, we can regard the space of all distributions as containing the space of all locally integrable functions, because as we saw, every locally integrable function gave rise to a functional/distribution.
But the space of distributions is in fact much larger, and contains things that are no longer functions on R^n in any sense.
The Dirac delta is one such example.
The functional in that case is just $\phi \mapsto \phi(0)$, evaluation at $0$.
gomez
Locally integrable means integrable over compact sets, Compactly supported means integrable over all compact set. Every locally integrable function has an obvious functional being the integral over the compact sets, and test functions are smooth compactly supported functions?
no, compactly supported means zero outside of a compact set.
also test functions are smooth.
so test functions are a very tiny subspace of locally integrable functions, which are in turn a tiny subspace of distributions.
ohhh
ok
dirac delta isnt a test function though?
its a functional
functionals are functions too ig
the functional is not the integral over "the compact sets" whatever that means, the functional associated to a particular locally integrable $\psi$ is $\phi \mapsto \int_{\mathbb{R}} \phi\psi , dx$
gomez
ok i can see that
I never said dirac delta is a test function, it very much isn't. I explicitly said that it is not a function on R^n.
it is a functional on the space of test functions
aka a distribution
ok
and test functions are locally integrable smooth functions
which means integrable on compact sets and smooth
no, they are compactly supported smooth functions
ahhh
which will also be locally integrable as a consequence.
so test functions are 0 outside of compact sets and smooth
yes
although you can consider bigger classes of test functions, and then when you consider the space of functionals on these you get different classes of distributions
woah one step at a time
lol
why are test functions locally integrable as a result of them being compactly supported and smooth
if they evaluate to 0 outside of compact sets, can they still be 0 within them
non-zero supremum?
smooth means they are certainly measurable, compactly supported and continuous things are bounded, and so if they are supported in a compact set K you have $\int_\mathbb{R} |f| \leq \int_K |f| \leq m(K)\cdot \max_{K} |f| < \infty. $
if its 0 doesnt that mean zero measure tho
what?
@slim
if you take a compact set into a test function and get zero doesnt that mean zero measure?
or wait test functions arent integrals rip
Speak in full sentences please, I have no idea what "take a compact set into a test function" means
and what are you asking about being zero measure
Same
If you have a test function f and any compact set A and f(A)=0, does that mean its measure is zero? I think i realized my mistake though. I thought that test functions were integrals
measure of the compact sets
yea
ok
compactly supported means continuous things are bounded?
compactly supported continuous functions are bounded, yes.
because continuous functions are bounded on compact sets.
and outside of a fixed compact set your function is just zero
At least we know the cat landed on its feet

Universal property of cats
remember
sigh
Remember, topologies are just glorified semi-lattices.
If you have two semi-lattices X and Y, and a monotone function f from X to Y then an element a of X is a sufficient factor for b in Y if for any refinement of X W, refinement of Y Z and monotone function f': W -> Z that extends f, for any element w of W, w subs a => f'(w) subs b. Likewise an element a of X is a necessary factor for b in Y if for any refinement of X W, refinement of Y Z and monotone function f': W -> Z that extends f, for any element w of W, w subs a <= f'(w) subs b. An element a of X is a determining factor for b in Y if it is a necessary and sufficient factor. The map f is factorable if every element of Y has a determining factor in X. This means that there exists a function f*: Y -> X.
What it means in topology for a map F: X to Y to be continuous is that the induced map f = cl o image_F, from the closed sets of X to the closed sets of Y is a factorable map.

k
Loololo
loololo
Bigger classes of test functions compared to what exactly?
the space of smooth compactly supported functions

lol
i thought test functions were exactly this
i thought test functions were smooth compactly supported functions
i know they are smooth
That is one possible choice, but the term is used for several different spaces depending on context.
no
test functions are functions on R^n
distributions are the cts functionals on the space of test functions, aka the cts dual of the space of test functions.
different classes of test functions give rise to different classes of distributions.
no clue what cts dual is
good thing I spelled it out explicitly in the sentence then
the space of continuous functionals on X is the cts dual space of X, yes.
I sullied it because it's not a complete sentence
For any topological vector space X.
oh ok
topological only because its cts?
i never done nothing with topologicla vector spaces
yes you need a topology for "continuous" to make sense.
i meant to say i never though of it more abstractly
only R^n
atm im thinking of all of these things in terms of R^n
It is just a vector space with a compatible topology. In basic analysis you are really working with R^n as a topological vector space, but things get a bit more complicated when you vector space is infinite dimensional, say a vector space of functions.
In this case our vector space was the smooth compactly supported functions.
Yeah but even when talking about R^n, if you want to talk about distributions you need to take the dual of the vector space of test functions on R^n.
Hey I have an interesting question it goes like this
As we all know that difficult times of COVID 19 is going everywhere and a medical facilities needs a instant attention
Can someone work on a formula which can distribute resources among districts based on the data such as daily cases, total active cases, recovery rates.
For this particular example consider medical facilities in form of oxygen
By this we will be able to predict the priority districts which need more attention and can save more lives.
With this we can also predict the districts which needs more vaccination to break the chain of this virus and slow down the rates of COVID cases.
This space of test functions is infinite dimensional.
yes
id naturally ask where do i learn more about this, but ive lived long enough on this god blessed server to know ill be meme linked to a popular analysis book and told to do every exercise
so ill just wikipedia each term and glance at the references every now and then if they even have them
Are you not supposed to do every exercise?
or something like that name
Just in analysis or any math textbook?
Lol. I wouldn't have offered a meme link, but I am not sure what the best thing to recommend is. I learned lots from vol1 of reed-simon, grafakos books for example.
but they will be in lots of places
kreyszig?
they are a fundamental tool in analysis
idk if they will be in kreysig
will check
How do you know which are the best exercises to do?
kreysig is nice for some purposes, it is quite gentle
calm down please
I'm not a woman tho
what
Dammit
the ones I don't have any idea how to do.
Did someone say functional analysis?
no?
Those should be the ones u should do so u kno how to do them
i never thought of topology and vector spaces together until june 3rd
Oh so update on Weyl law @forest jackal: turns out my estimates were brutal for a certain zone, so I sharpened them quite a lot. And now I just need a lower bound on my stuff
ok time to leave
Cool
In particular something which was previously O(R^2) became O(R)
And another thing which was O(R^2) became O(R^{-N}) lmfao
Didn't even take that much extra work it was basically that I thought all I needed was O(R^2) and I was like pfft ez
lol
So I was willing to throw away a lot
e.g. oh |h| = O((1+|x-R|)^{-N})? Well means it's bounded
Stuff like that
why is there a #serious-discussion
There was a recurring issue of off-topic conversations in #math-discussion so the idea was to make a second general discussion channel to reduce congestion at peak activity hours and to make it easier to redirect conversations

does anyone happen to be good at Sokoban
i have a puzzle that i need pointers on
not an entire solution but like. yknow
I am soko player
would you mind if i asked you for pointers on a sokoban map
go for it
I thought I knew how it worked, but what are the goals?
good lord
fill all goal squares
its not for me
ok I put it in a game https://www.puzzlescript.net/play.html?p=c4b23c500c7e41e5d1b5c0b766d6b1eb
I don't understand 👀 I thought you had to put the boxes on the red dots?
the boxes are the red dots in ann's drawing
getting 12 is hard
Can you push two boxes?
no

ok I think I got it, let me perform the 500 moves left
im kinda scared of like
accidentally making a box stuck
so im struggling to think of what to do as the first step
I think you can ||see like 3 boxes that must be stuck||
by starting at the bottom, i'm pretty sure you can get a single box stuck
||which ones are those?||
||top right 3||
||so you're saying i should get them stuck on purpose, ie give up trying to fill the goals with them?||
uh oh maybe I spoke too soon
im having choice paralysis
how do I get all of these
Pretty sure it's impossible
12 targets is impossible??
No, I mean finishing from Plur's position
How can the blocks be moved?
I posted a game link
blue guy pushes
this is an 11 solution, so probably just 1 trick off
||Is moving block c2 to e3 legal?||
huh
Unless I'm misinterpreting the game

Okay let me open this on PC
Is it like those strength puzzles in pokemon if I'm not wrong?
Touch response is horrible
yea karaka
Ic
z to undo r to restart

Lol
oh no i see
ryc solved wrong one

no it was right i think
yeah i ||stuck 3 boxes on purpose, 2 near the start and one near the end. the 4th box i just couldn't get.|| i ||started with stuff near the bottom, pushing them in front of the lower exit of the hallway on the middle right and then using that hallway to get them into the black (which required me to get 2 of the 3 top right ones stuck|| then, i ||worked my way through the puzzle clearing out the middle area, then the one i could get on the top right, then the stuff on the top left except for one which i had to stick in a corner||
a sokoban puzzle im trying to solve
or rather
having ppl here try to solve
because im shit at sokoban
it's a great puzzle
yea ok it works
yeah i i then, i
i should have clarified what the spoilers were. the first one is when i got things stuck, the second spoiler is how i started, and the third spoiler is how i handled the rest
really? interesting
those are not the ones i got stuck
sokoban with a jillion solutions, as always
or, i guess 3 out of the 4 are
Sokoban puzzles are cool
I watched my friend play helltaker and there were some sokoban puzzles in there

i didnt know that ange that is interesting
Hella has existed in California English since at least the mid 1970s
Usually angetenar has a deep nickname, but now it's like banana

Do you mean Paradise of Despair
that's deep

I want it too
this is also nice
God I hate that word

Just sounds ugly on the ear

this one
a group is a group acting on a group
a ring is a group acting on an abelian group?
a module is a ring action on an abelian group?
cayley i meant
I don't think the second one is correct
a ring is a monoid acting on a abelian group, a division ring is a group acting on an abelian group
I think that is still incorrect
are there any cool other facts about objects arising as actions of more elementary objects?
what is a module acting on an abelian group
does that exist?
No, modules are defined over rings not groups
Unless you modify what the module “action” is
But then you just end up with an abelian group acting on an abelian group
remember, groups are just glorified magmas
aren't actions just functors into a category of endomorphisms?
a [thing] is an endofunctor of [map] in [category]
replace thing with anything
and theres a way to make this work

And here we cope
obligatory
why can't you have a module action on a group?
No a left module is a map
R (x) M -f> M where (x) is the tensor product of abelian groups such that f•(id (x) f) = f•(mu (x) id) where mu is the comultiplication (actually I think this is the multiplication map) R (x) R -> R
(Assuming right modules before I get called out)

a
is a
oid with one object
i don't know tensor product or much cateogry theory
Don't worry tensor products are pretty straightforward to learn
A category is a categoryoid with a single object

this almost works
You see, a tensor is a thing that transforms like a tensor
a thonk is a thonkoid with a single object
Category is a monoidoid
if you interpret categoryoid as an (infty, 1) cat
Tensor product is a map of bilinear relations how tf can u have a bilinear relation on groups

monoidoidoidoid
A category is simply a representable endofunctor on the category of categories
There are no set theoretic concerns in Ba Sing Se
It’s not set theoretic
It’s like class theoretic issues or something, I don’t get it
if you liked it then you should have put a ringoid
There are no size issues in Ba Sing Se
True!
I mean it is in a sense set theoretic as in the sets don't exist
Unless it's the whole cardinal thing
Mhm Grothendieck Universes mhmmhmhmm inaccessible Cardinals ok now we've solved all the size issues give the infinity, 1 megatopos of homotopy categories
But it’s not about sets since the things are too big to be sets anyway
If we squish them down we can make them sets
Let $\mathfrak{W}$ be a weakly co-Yoneda anti-monomorphic strongly faithful weakly pseudo-self-coadjoint embedding of $\mathcal{C}$ in \textbf{Set}. Then it is clear that $$\coprod_{i: \mathfrak{X} \gets \delta} \log(\mathscr{T}_{g}^{\otimes}) \cong \mathfrak{cg}(\mathbb{CP}^n).$$
