hallow wasp

i remember not understanding it in analysis

and some bs about it being a distribution not a funciton

deep mango
#

Thats not kronecker delta

#

Thats dirac delta

hallow wasp

freak

sharp mulch
#

You're thinking about the dirac delta

#

$\delta_{mn}=\begin{cases}1&m=n\0&m\neq n\end{cases}$

fathom swallowBOT
#

Apostle of Epilogue and Eternity

sharp mulch
#

This is the Kronecker delta

hallow wasp
#

looks oddly similar to dirac delta

#

but integral

#

in integral

bronze pelican
#

It's the indicator function of the diagonal

hallow wasp
#

oh

bronze pelican
hallow wasp
#

that is used for laplace

#

right?

deep mango
#

Sure

#

Its basically the identity matrix

#

Like

#

It's the entries of the identity

hallow wasp
#

infinite identity matrix?

deep mango
#

Well you can use it with as many indices as you like I guess

#

So

#

Sure

#

Anyway, dirac delta is the """function""" which is infinity at 0 and 1 elsewhere

hallow wasp
#

yea

#

so its a distribution which means its an area under a curve?

deep mango
#

Which just means its the measure whose mass is all concentrated at 0

#

No, those are a different thing

#

Probability distributions are not the same thing as analysis distributions

hallow wasp
#

they are both measures?

deep mango
#

In analysis, distribution means "linear functional on a space of functions"

#

Continuous linear functional to be exact

hallow wasp
#

a functional?

deep mango
#

Usually it means linear functional on the space of smooth compactly supported functions

#

Yeah just a linear map from the space to the base field

hallow wasp
#

can i get an example

#

like it takes in a point in R3

#

and gives something in R?

#

f:R^3->R is a functional?

forest jackal
#

No, it takes arbitrary "test functions" (smooth compactly supported functions is one example of what you take to be the test functions), and spits out real/complex numbers.

#

and it does so linearly and continuously.

hallow wasp
#

idk compactly supported

#

like functions that preserve compactness?

forest jackal
#

a simple example is the functional $T_\psi:\phi \mapsto \int \phi\psi$ for a fixed choice of locally integrable function $\psi$.

fathom swallowBOT
forest jackal
#

nonzero only in some finite radius ball.

#

working in R^n

hallow wasp
#

locally integrable?

#

what does locally add to it

#

and im assuming phi is just any function?

forest jackal
#

integrable over any compact set, so it might grow wildly at infinity but that is okay.

#

eg x^2 is a locally integrable function on R

#

phi is your test function, i.e. a smooth compactly supported function

#

because it is compactly supported, it doesn't matter if psi gets huge at infinity.

hallow wasp
#

smooth means infinitely differentiable?

forest jackal
#

the integral will make sense

#

yes

hallow wasp
#

oh

#

locally integrable means integrable over compact sets

#

that makes sense now

#

so what makes it a functional

#

all those properties?

#

or wait the example you gave was a distribution in analysis

forest jackal
#

The definition of a functional on a vector space V is just a linear map T:V->F, F being the scalar field. If the vector space has a topology too (like the space of test functions does), then you usually are only interested in the continuous functionals.

#

The example I gave is indeed a continuous functional on the space of test functions, and so is a distribution in the sense of analysis.

#

And as such, we can regard the space of all distributions as containing the space of all locally integrable functions, because as we saw, every locally integrable function gave rise to a functional/distribution.

#

But the space of distributions is in fact much larger, and contains things that are no longer functions on R^n in any sense.

#

The Dirac delta is one such example.

#

The functional in that case is just $\phi \mapsto \phi(0)$, evaluation at $0$.

fathom swallowBOT
hallow wasp
#

Locally integrable means integrable over compact sets, Compactly supported means integrable over all compact set. Every locally integrable function has an obvious functional being the integral over the compact sets, and test functions are smooth compactly supported functions?

forest jackal
#

no, compactly supported means zero outside of a compact set.

#

also test functions are smooth.

#

so test functions are a very tiny subspace of locally integrable functions, which are in turn a tiny subspace of distributions.

hallow wasp
#

ohhh

#

ok

#

dirac delta isnt a test function though?

#

its a functional

#

functionals are functions too ig

forest jackal
#

the functional is not the integral over "the compact sets" whatever that means, the functional associated to a particular locally integrable $\psi$ is $\phi \mapsto \int_{\mathbb{R}} \phi\psi , dx$

fathom swallowBOT
hallow wasp
#

ok i can see that

forest jackal
#

I never said dirac delta is a test function, it very much isn't. I explicitly said that it is not a function on R^n.

#

it is a functional on the space of test functions

#

aka a distribution

hallow wasp
#

ok

#

and test functions are locally integrable smooth functions

#

which means integrable on compact sets and smooth

forest jackal
#

no, they are compactly supported smooth functions

hallow wasp
#

ahhh

forest jackal
#

which will also be locally integrable as a consequence.

hallow wasp
#

so test functions are 0 outside of compact sets and smooth

forest jackal
#

yes

#

although you can consider bigger classes of test functions, and then when you consider the space of functionals on these you get different classes of distributions

hallow wasp
#

woah one step at a time

forest jackal
#

lol

hallow wasp
#

why are test functions locally integrable as a result of them being compactly supported and smooth

#

if they evaluate to 0 outside of compact sets, can they still be 0 within them

#

non-zero supremum?

forest jackal
#

smooth means they are certainly measurable, compactly supported and continuous things are bounded, and so if they are supported in a compact set K you have $\int_\mathbb{R} |f| \leq \int_K |f| \leq m(K)\cdot \max_{K} |f| < \infty. $

hallow wasp
#

if its 0 doesnt that mean zero measure tho

forest jackal
#

what?

hallow wasp
#

@slim

#

if you take a compact set into a test function and get zero doesnt that mean zero measure?

#

or wait test functions arent integrals rip

forest jackal
#

Speak in full sentences please, I have no idea what "take a compact set into a test function" means

#

and what are you asking about being zero measure

hallow wasp
#

If you have a test function f and any compact set A and f(A)=0, does that mean its measure is zero? I think i realized my mistake though. I thought that test functions were integrals

#

measure of the compact sets

#

yea

#

ok

#

compactly supported means continuous things are bounded?

forest jackal
#

compactly supported continuous functions are bounded, yes.

#

because continuous functions are bounded on compact sets.

#

and outside of a fixed compact set your function is just zero

hallow wasp
#

oh from smooth

#

Remember, topologies are just glorified semi-lattices.

If you have two semi-lattices X and Y, and a monotone function f from X to Y then an element a of X is a sufficient factor for b in Y if for any refinement of X W, refinement of Y Z and monotone function f': W -> Z that extends f, for any element w of W, w subs a => f'(w) subs b. Likewise an element a of X is a necessary factor for b in Y if for any refinement of X W, refinement of Y Z and monotone function f': W -> Z that extends f, for any element w of W, w subs a <= f'(w) subs b. An element a of X is a determining factor for b in Y if it is a necessary and sufficient factor. The map f is factorable if every element of Y has a determining factor in X. This means that there exists a function f*: Y -> X.

What it means in topology for a map F: X to Y to be continuous is that the induced map f = cl o image_F, from the closed sets of X to the closed sets of Y is a factorable map.

the space of smooth compactly supported functions

neat lintel
hallow wasp
#

omg

#

i think i need to do this formally

forest jackal
#

lol

hallow wasp
#

i thought test functions were exactly this

#

i thought test functions were smooth compactly supported functions

#

i know they are smooth

forest jackal
#

That is one possible choice, but the term is used for several different spaces depending on context.

hallow wasp
#

oh

#

so like test functions on distributions

forest jackal
#

no

#

test functions are functions on R^n

#

distributions are the cts functionals on the space of test functions, aka the cts dual of the space of test functions.

#

different classes of test functions give rise to different classes of distributions.

hallow wasp
#

no clue what cts dual is

forest jackal
#

good thing I spelled it out explicitly in the sentence then

hallow wasp
#

so functionals = dual?

#

thats what i got when you said aka

forest jackal
#

the space of continuous functionals on X is the cts dual space of X, yes.

bronze pelican
#

I sullied it because it's not a complete sentence

forest jackal
#

For any topological vector space X.

hallow wasp
#

oh ok

#

topological only because its cts?

#

i never done nothing with topologicla vector spaces

forest jackal
#

yes you need a topology for "continuous" to make sense.

hallow wasp
#

i meant to say i never though of it more abstractly

#

only R^n

#

atm im thinking of all of these things in terms of R^n

forest jackal
#

It is just a vector space with a compatible topology. In basic analysis you are really working with R^n as a topological vector space, but things get a bit more complicated when you vector space is infinite dimensional, say a vector space of functions.

#

In this case our vector space was the smooth compactly supported functions.

#

Yeah but even when talking about R^n, if you want to talk about distributions you need to take the dual of the vector space of test functions on R^n.

Hey I have an interesting question it goes like this
As we all know that difficult times of COVID 19 is going everywhere and a medical facilities needs a instant attention
Can someone work on a formula which can distribute resources among districts based on the data such as daily cases, total active cases, recovery rates.
For this particular example consider medical facilities in form of oxygen
By this we will be able to predict the priority districts which need more attention and can save more lives.
With this we can also predict the districts which needs more vaccination to break the chain of this virus and slow down the rates of COVID cases.

forest jackal
#

This space of test functions is infinite dimensional.
