should people who are charged with these things get a vasectomy or something so they don't reproduce further?
jail should work no?
this is literally impossible to do in a way that doesnt constitute literal genocide in many countries
Yes?
i mean you are actively tampering with their body/
like at least jail doesnt do it
they will get out after 5-6 years- what about after that
monitor them
Let's not get on the subject of forced vasectomies, wtf?
This is very extreme.
id like to ask why everyone here feels at liberty to control the bodies of people just because theyre poor
Does that not count as eugenics..?
it does
What could POSSIBLY be the conversation where eugenics is a proposed solution???
Is that addressed at me too?
Is this on the child abuse/forced child labor convo?
I dont think i made any such point at least.
tbh the whole conversation was kinda eugenics coded from the beginning
I feel that in almost all cases, dysfunctional behavior happens because people don't have access to basic resources or opportunities
Oh no...
We were talking about the one child policy, someone said it was a huge success lol...
yes, re: your original point about people not being allowed to have kids if theyre sufficiently poor. everything you said after that doesnt fall into this category.
So eugenics, which literally doesn't stop adoption, is the automatic next step... wow...
My original point was that there should be a upper bound.
Is this like mods meet spot or what
Also what about people who can support more than one kid and want them???
How are you enforcing an upper bound
Anyways I feel like the reason why many families have more children than they can support is because of lack of sexual education and access to contraceptives
how much is that in fahrenheit
105
Lack of sexual education and access to contraceptives is also a cultural thing
its just a little odd to me that we came to the conclusion that beggars are actually exploiting their children because it makes them more money than working, based on no real evidence, and then using that to make some kind of moral judgement of beggars that justifies stripping them of their autonomy.
So taking away people's bodily autonomy slightly more is something we should do..? Or am I misreading all this?
thats scorching hot man i feel bad for the kids
they shouldn't have the right to reproduce tho- not like forced surgery or sth but they don't deserve to have more kids either
I don't think you're misreading, this conversation is just bonkers
What
I am probably only as heavily adverse to this idea because as is I hate most things that strip bodily autonomy in some major way that doesn't seem justified to me, maybe if I saw what others were seeing I could understand why this is a good idea...
???
It's not a good idea
Good idea in the subjective sense, I just can't see any argument for why it's supposedly good outside of "it lowers child suffering/abuse if the child never gets born into the suffering/abuse"
walked away for 2 minutes and came back to this?
we are talking about people who hit their kids and like to keep them in poor conditions without adequate food etc right
No we're talking about poor people
you have completely warped the premise of the convo
where did hitting kids come from???
anyway im shutting this convo down
what
I dont know how it works where you are, but from talking to multiple kids who do this and others who have done the same, there seems to be a good indication that this is the case for a lot of people here. Kids will mention their "boss" who may or may not be their father, enforce a daily quota for them to reach, and punishment if they dont. Some beggars have admitted that it makes them a lot of money and its why they do it, and seeing it become a popular thing to do is concerning. There is no definitive data analysis here, but this is a good indication that it must be surveyed and addressed.
its bordering on eugenics
alr b4 shit hits the fan can we stop
Oh not suffering/abuse, child labor doesn't fall under that...
wait what π when did the convo topic change of that context
idk what that word means ngl
look it up
I open this, see forced vasectomy
Note that im not dismissing the case that some people might be forced into doing it, but i also wont dismiss the possible that it is becoming a real alternative and "'meta".
And that, Marjorie - just so you will know - and your children will someday know - is the night the lights went out in serious-discussy!
eugenics is basically offing people based on their traits, to "filter" them iykyk
Eh it can include not directly killing them
Not exactly but whatever, move on
I dont know how im being dragged as promoting eugenics here, its infuriating
Ile just leave the convo.
oh wtf
So...?
in minecrtaft
Only the most smartest the most strongest typa people should breed
CNN is auditioning so hard to be in good favor with the Ellison billionaires who look to purchase the network

"Heated truth"
@sharp sage i hate you man
first of all why did you ping me
@sharp sage i love you man
I have a computer architecture test after tomorrow
<@&268886789983436800> check this guy's deleted messages lol
Lots of MUX involved
What was it
Wait what happened
mf what does your exam have to do with my username
idk
Mreow (super serious)
He needs help from the greatest computer architect of all time
This is so funny oh my god
Woof. (Professional, eloquent, informed)
It ain't that serious
This is honestly a fail by the reporter too, like if you were going to be problematic and just follow the people who bought out your organization blindly, at least have an example rhetoric rofl
The joke to me about these situations in the USA is that they just make up stuff so there's actually not even an example
The oligarchy and their stooges are so arrogant that they donβt think they have to put any effort to their propaganda
It's more complex than that, but yeah I mean people believe them regardless of the effort right now. Very brainwashed.
I am still searching for a good news source rn, I might be looking into BBC to avoid USA news
By complexity I mean, this rhetoric is probably part of a larger discussion about how Democrats are creating political violence against the President. But like, is that truly what happened? Seems fishy
do u guys think smartphones did more harm or more good? like information and knowledge is easily accessible for education but on the other hand the dopamine and side effects are harmful too
Mayhaps, but wed like to keep them
More harm imo
but u can only connect with me or talk with me like discuss things because of smartphone
more good, it also enables awareness about its harmfulness
True, but it can also isolate us from people irl
It depends on the metric. In terms of education, definitely more harm
also great topic btw
isn't that more about self control
Yay am free
but in older times before - to even get knowledge about something u needed to go gain it from the library or only have half baked info right
I'd say smartphones are kinda just neutral in my eyes
Controlling something that directly affects your dopamine is difficult, which is why smartphone addiction is a widespread thing
Yeah, it's self control, but that's not so simple
But the internet and technology/devices as a whole are positive to me
self-control gets harder overtime, because the technology is just gonna get better and better and better
I have a textbook that explains algebra well. It is a book that's been around since maybe the 80s. I would wager that book is better than any algebra resource I can find easily at my dingertips
should that be worked upon tho? like here we are using discord would that count as dopamine too- i think smartphones talk up a lot lot of time which can be projected somewhere else tho
If we're talking about smartphones specifically, wouldn't it be better if we had a PC or like 2 laptops in every house instead of a smartphone
And a really basic phone for comms
Phones are easy to carry out and about
PCS and laptop are way costier- what about households who are kinda poor and what if we need to call anyone
Does something like a really old Nokia count as a smartphone
but a person sitting in a third world country wouldn't have the same access so a smartphone is a positive for him but negative for u because its a distraction? so it depends on resources?
Can it easily* connect to the internet and search engines?
Easily as in unmodified.
From what I know of the main Nokia phones, I'd say it doesn't count
i guess. but it wouldn't have any features like camera etc
The problem isn't dopamine itself. It's stuff like social media and games like candy crush which make u crave dopamine more (for lack of a better term) that are the problem.
No. Just calls and texts
mmmmm I would say that's correct, it provides more equal access in theory, that seems right. And there's nothing wrong with that. I was speaking merely on terms of like, not all synthesis is equal
if u come home after a long day at work then u need something to chill off too- thats a thing too entertainment is kinda important too but there is no balance
But it also sort of depends on the goal, and I don't think all smart phone technology adds nothing for instance
If we included a Nokia here, wouldn't that be better than a modern smartphone?
big companies profit thru this lowkey
who want me
I wouldn't personally class it as a smartphone then, though others may disagree.
can u live without things like camera, gps maps, online payment etc
Okay so a question i got asked once is: how you realistically do it. I believe the answer doesn't need to account for everything and the solution will come from experimenting.
So the main idea i had is to take away the power of parents over the child or at least how exclusive this is. While we can't take awaythe physical power parents have by being adults, we can make children less dependant on parents. The idea would be to allow children to change parents, or leave their parents without any consequences or conditions, having shelters for them to sleep always available for themw and allowing them to spend the time they're growing up however they want and not exclusively with some people. This might sound scary and tbh i have no idea if it would work, but i think that at the same time it would free a lot ofchildren materially from unhealthy or abusive family so it would compensate ig.
this chat is real serious, imma get out
Wow i made one gigantic sentence
U can buy a camera, ask for directions and pay with a credit card
Like I don't know what I'd exactly call something like a Nokia, but I don't see it internally as a smartphone
why so serious
there was actually a mr.bean episode about this one lmao and it showed how all these things are easily done by smartphone and how hectic that is
And the only real necessity here is credit card
Last time i wasn't so serious i got muted for 1 hour
thats crazy son
really? what would u do if u got bored?
who is vie
im vie
u r not god
Haven't seen that. Though if u weigh the risks of smartphone addiction, isolation, exposure to inappropriate material etc, is it worth it
believe me when i say this serious street isnt for silly people
Personally, I read or write. Sometimes I play games, sometimes I watch stuff.
i am on the wrong spot then
vie means life in french. god is a term we associate with a higher power who gave life to all of us- in some theory or another life is god so vie is god
I'm silly
All I know is that the internet has been a positive for me
Internet is cool for people who get bullied at school to ge tonline friends me thinks
we can like keep memories of things or connect with any relative who lives far away and video calling also helps a lot. those are things that have just become a norm tho and it is kinda a necessity. imagine living away from ur parents- wouldn't u like to see them on video call
You don't need to have been bullied to only really want to connect online
I think one thing that is and had always been deceptive about technology is that it improves things. At a philosophical level, the forward progress of humanity is not necessarily a positive goal. That's a hot take but you know
Ok yeah that's a good point
if i say using a phone is bad then i shouldnt be using a phone, but if i cant use a phone then how can i say its bad
Like this is important in the smart phones discussion
ah i might like to reform my question - screen addiction ig? even playing games should count into that
You can acknowledge something is bad whilst using it still
It's like someone who's trying to quit smoking deluding themselves into thinking smoking is good.
the purple person gives an advice while the white role gives an example
Smoking is good
If u mean video games should count into screen addiction, I'd say that purely depends on how u regulate urself
Zamn
I mean yeah i get it
Until you die
Ok so you're mostly asking about screen time then vie?
The best part
Just that people seem to really think online relationships are bad but imo they're just as good as irl
I'm just realizing I've never talked about math once in a math server
I mean smoking is better than some other things for sure, though this doesn't make it good
we are talking in a scenario in of like 1990s when smartphones weren't that big and pcs and computes werent advanced either- like was that world better?
Drugs are viewed so weirdly by the state
But I don't doubt some people benefit in some way shape or form from it
Better than today. But depending on who u ask, it may have been worse
As in America
Like it's crazy that aclphol is okay but not weed, the former makes you violent and you can die from withdrawal...
i think smartphones harm the most tho- like if covering the time u spend on it with pc is exactly the same in my theory actually π
you are right...
Wait weed still isn't legalized???
Wouldn't the latter do the same thing with more severity
True
donald trump signed an executive order a few days ago to reevaluate the legality of psychedelic drugs, specifically ibogaine
Who dat
I've always wondered how exactly weed feels, based on all I've heard
no I get that, I mean like your argument is not "phone bad" but "screen time bad" which is the accurate take imo
they have to pass stage 3 clinical trials, but i think that includes things like psylocibin
we are actually taking on very imp topic, add into it- i wanna hear ur perspective
I agree
u seem like someone who loathes smartphones
ibogaine? its a tryptamine thats very effective in treating addiction
I'm not a stoner myself but I love watching stoned people trying to have a conversation
Donald trump
yay we're talking about weed again
What's it like
It's not as intense as alcohol visibly does, right?
yea like it affects your health too so thats a very negative thing
It's not in france (yet france is the bigges teuropean co sumer per capita)
why dont we ever discuss about how small moments in your life brings you happiness
it makes even boring things incredibely interesting and it makes you really hungry, then it makes you really tired
Feels like you are high
Interesting
because its a fact and nothing to discuss over
Because this is serious discussion and serious people aren't allowed to be happy
weed has been legal in germany for a while now
oh so just like living
Ohhhhhhh why didn't I think of that
2 contrasting opinions
,av @trail vortex
I guess it varies between people but my friends tend to use way too many words to say anything and they misunderstand each other all the time
Which makes it look insanely funny
Because they can often just not
the endocannabinoid system in your body regulates lots of things but most notably mood, motivation and sleep;
as the name suggests, cannabis acts mostly on this system
Are u stealing
I need to see that at least once in my life
Maybe I should look up how it acts
Mephedrone is popular in my city
ah yeah, it also affects memory
No im just looking at this cute cat, did you make it
ive always believed that discord is unfit for serious discussions... but this chat has changed my mind in a deeper way than i can express through text
Mephedrone sucks
It's also popular here
They also call it meow meow
No, it's by an artist called tofupixels
True, its like cocaine but cheap
Reddit and twitter are the best for serious discussions
i thought you were the wise one here
I am wise π’
Twitter for serious discussion? I could just go down to the nearest white nationalist rally and get the same opinions
I go through periods of using screens a lot more (I'll refrain from saying more about that) and the toll on my health at those times, physically, is palpable. I really do think that staring at a smart phone or screen for hours on end hurts you both physically and mentally, and I would go so far as to say there is research evidence if you choose to look for it
ew white nationalism
interesting view
I wonder what the most extreme easily accessible household drug is (like caffeine and stuff like that, stuff you can easily buy for consumption)
probably morphine
redhotcoffee
... you can just easily buy morphine..?
Codeine phosphate too
you can have it prescribed for you
I didn't mean prescribed.
its alcohol
I meant to imply something you can just walk to the store and buy without restrictions
hmm...
Cocacola
But what about out of the ones without legal restrictions
like what?
Okay it meant extreme as in how it makes you feel
well, you can inhale solvents...
well maybe shrooms
Caffeine is easy to get for consumption, and not very restricted if at all
they dissolve your brain, which is a very extreme feeling
Oh yeah lemme go to the Walmart and buy some shrooms without legal restrictions
psilocybin is controlled
So I should consume bleach!
okay this is harder than i thought
Im surprised that alcohol is so low on physical harm, like it is very known for making you violent and do stupid shit
Do put some acid in it too, chloric would be good
depends heavily on person but that doesnt count as physical harm in this sense
What does ?
physical harm that comes directly from the drug
Oh okay
you have to abuse alcohol for a very long time to be seriously harmed
i mean you can still buy something legally and then go back to your home and mix it into an illegal drug for consumption
Is caffeine really the only one that is sold for consumption that doesn't have much legal restrictions, and you wouldn't be surprised if some form of it was in a household?
that still makes it easily accessible ?
That isn't effects from the original substance though
and abuse it heavily, there are tons of high functioning alcoholics that abuse alcohol for decades and are pretty healthy all things considered
Okay I guess we can say sugar as well
Atp this is cooking
And if you want to go for more "standard" drugs, over the counter pain meds i believe don't have many restrictions
I'm shocked lsd dependence is so high considering you have to wait like a week between hits if you don't wanna take 20x the amount you took last time
I'm shocked long term alcoholics don't have more liver problems also
for reference this is from https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(07)60464-4/abstract
Gonna have to look at their methodology later
When dependence is that low it might just be residual from the habit because even anabolic steroid is higher
i mean there are alcoholics that dont consume alcohol for months
Kinda sucks alcohol is so normalized in some places to the point of being othered if you don't do it
Nah nvm i can't read a graph
dependence is more complex than consuming every day
MAKE BARS !
opinion? people shouldn't really talk if other person isnt in the mood to have a conversation tho- like they are not entitled to my time and space either
Well I mean it's partially the service workers job, no?
Plus, it's something that is normalized in many places, so it's automatically assumed to be fine.
they are talking about people like barber etc
Well it's normalized for barbers to converse, no?
i still havent figured this out idk why it seems so easy when i first read it
it shouldn't be
It's assumed to be fine because normally people don't care
no one is entitled to have a conversation
I agree, but it's basically part of their job with how standardized it is
I think it has to be over the counter pain meds or something similar
i think people do care like not all people have social battery or like to just small talk with random people yk
so medical prescriptions doesnt count, and cooking and mixing doesnt count either
well then probably its alcohol but like the high ethanol ones
Yes but people aren't vocal about it because you get othered if you do it
Alcohol has legal restrictions in many places
A minor can just walk to the store and buy over the counter pain meds iirc
i think khat is unrestricted in the US (or used to be)
What is khat? Or is that a typo
That wouldn't surprise me
an alkaloid drug
Oh, interesting
iirc you can also get high from industrial fertilizers
Big pharma typa shit, but also it avoids all the shinnenigans psychiatry can do to you
its here as well, it was popular for a while in the US because it was sold in gas stations in energy drinks and similar
Interesting
its used a stimulant but can be quite dangerous in high amounts
its basically just leafs of a plant and traditionally chewed (which is probably fine) but if you get it in high concentrations, it can cause issues
Also i guess the country and time period matters heavily here...
another drug i can think of is kratom
thats also a plant but its an atypical opioid
that sounds evil
Interesting
i mean the drugs name
also is or used to be sold at gas stations and its really dangerous in high amounts (because opioid)
they always come up with devious names
its an indiginous name for the plant lmao
I think alcohol has a worse name than many drugs but we're too used to it
why, just dont do both
or OD on caffeine
Wow
an idea ahead of time
How do you survive bad work days
alcohol
How did a perfectly reasonable conversation about using screens affecting health devolve to using drugs
There was this thing about tile layers being drunk from 11am because their knees would je so painful
Imagine if the topic never change dand we wer estuck on it forever
i saw this chat jump from religion in india to discussing about whether war crimes is acceptable in life or death situations
both brings you a wider view
(maybe i overexargrrted in the first part)
oh sure, but my point was like, it tenda to trend more negative until somebody crashes out
fine for topic to change and all, and even touch taboos, I just don't want that to be so negative for someone it say, harms them or enables them
This is a good take
oh
Is rational belief in religion possible?
you just got active @halcyon aurora
Religion is typically not about rationality, not about proving stuff but about belief and faith. And i do not think it is a reason to look down on religions
i agree
Ty for your approval uncle boobs
active green leaf? thats new
did someone ever tell you you looks like shawn grows?
I have a very hot take since I someehat of a rationalist and religious
fr
bro got active in 5 days
this is proof that the active system is rigged
i've been saying this for the past 5 years
i have maybe 4000 messages and i dont have active
well i do look like him
i got honourable in 5 minutes, so anything is possible
yeah tt we all know how you got that honorable
we all know honourable is nepotism
Dang I was hoping me getting active would be a speedrun record /j
bro knows ball
mathcord color system π’
nah but fr how did you do it
i legit havent even seen you around these past days
ive seen people get it from using help channels
I have been here, enough to see you
haha
I'm mostly in this channel or in #math-discussion and occasionally #discussion
oh ok
yeah i dont ususally go to math discussion
so they probably give you more active points if you re talking in math discussion
I had some good talks in math discussion, and I also reacted a lot
yeah yeah this must be it
I have no clue
Maths channels are weighted more. I don't know that reactions have anything to do with it
the corruption runs deep
TBH I am not trying to beat the system, and I am trying to avoid this tag since I know it will make me more targetrd
exactly
It's all assigned by the bot
Not sure what you mean by this, but as of yesterday you can do /colour remove to go back to being white
Then /colour swap to go back
I am also aware of that
can an exception be made
Honestly I've probably been very active the past 5 days so
Are you someone's alt?
whats up shin?
i have like 20k messages no activity role
who me?
Literally impossible without rewriting the code
you gotta be consistent
Yea
I am not an alt, which probably helps tbh
Hey, wrapping up grading for the semester atm
yapping final boss
I was just wondering because it seems like you've picked up on a lot of stuff for only being here 5 days
yeah its craqzy
what do you mean by grading?
I think I just have had no life the past 5 days
I am grading homework
my texts are like house apart very inconsistent
Out of 100, usually
The thing you need to know is I left the server and returned, and I also know a long time former member
are you a TA or prof?
who
whoβs?
Ah, that's the detail I was missing
TA, but I'm gonna be teaching a class over the summer
i have like 60 stacks of papers on my desk for grading
I'm TAing master's algebra
my condolences
I'm 3 psets behind
But tbh I wasn't here all that long on any occasion, I forget id I left last time upon getting active or not
My class is called "ideas in math". I think I will have ungraded homework and a final presentation. Maybe students will have to present hw problems
wooow, i feel likei cant be left in positions of power or i will recreate this one prison experiment.
Anyways easy 1,3 in Galois THeory get wrecked
i hate you galois, frick you
This is crazier considering I was also muted for making a reference to Pythagoras that was kind of ridiculous here
thats either gonna be awesome or horrible
But that was a very justifies mute tbh lol
I've still not decided what I wanna do exactly. Usually it's just intro to proof slop. Logic, sets, graph theory
I wanna do some cool stuff
Maybe some proofs from the book
Probably will start with some basic logic and set theory, here's how you write a proof etc then move on to the cool stuff
what are you pursuing after uni?
Oh and the former member is amukh1 (I actually think he's here still, but pretty inactive now)
acturial math thanks for asking
I've been given freedom to grade as harshly as I want due to curving and I'm still going easy on them
Well probably a professorship, although I'm kind of rethinking it now
you sound like my prof (linear algebra 2 had a 60% passing rate)
60% is high or low?
depends on what the students look like iguess
π€
The only shitty thing is it's online
oh lol
But I'm hoping if I make presentations a grading criterion people will actually engage
like 50% didnt even get the criteria to do the exam, and another 40 %didnt pass. Idk the exam in hindsight wasnt hard but there were crazy amounts of people not passing
well the person doing the presentation will be at least
But it's also being attended by like, hs students, so hopefully they want to learn
oh lol
Oh damn that's quite bad. And this is after he went easy on y'all?
Not exclusively, it's a credits transfer program thing in addition to usual students taking the class
i think the only summer online course where i was actively participating was a reading course for law theory which was pretty fast paced and just a lot of work in general
Wanting a new college for electrical engineering. Any good recommendations?
if u make it lax then if i was taking that course id probs alt tab and play league
Another thing I was considering in terms of lectures to choose one or two big things and just work towards those/show applications of them the entire semester, showing other cool things along the way
I still have to talk the previous professors, decide on my grading policy, decide on my attendance policy, and decide on my actual course structure
wuldnt it start in like
This is gonna be significantly more work than I thought
It's the second summer semester, it starts in july
But they're pressing us to upload the syllabussy already "so they can get a jump on reading" but like, this is a 0 prereq course
Uhhh yea to prepare for this course please read GΓΆdel, Escher, Bach and watch 5 3blue1brown videos
not the syllabussy π
You misunderstand. The people at penn are pressing the summer lecturers
ohh
Like, the people in charge of the summer term
yo shin wsp
Hello
thats extremely sweaty of them
how's the deep corners of life?
I think it's more for actual real courses like law school or smth but whatever. I still haven't made the canvas website
but ill give em the benefit of the doubt and think its just smth they do so ppl dont start too late
Very dark thanks for asking
np blud
ive seen a lot of ppl make their canvas page like week 2 of semester
it will be bright in the end i suppose
That's crazy work. I wanna have it done like a week or 2 in advance because I'm also flying out for a summer school the same week
perks of online teaching
Dear goodness this is crazy
I hate thinking about attendance and grading policy. Can we all just vibe and have a good time and learn together, and if you actually learned something you get an A
Those fuckers moved the summer school from end of august to start of july
It's been end of august for YEARS, I was so caught off guard by this
does fall sem start at october there
Our fall sem at penn starts September
I'm actually not sure when it starts in antwerp, which is where the summer school is
what are ur opinion on just memorizing stuff for scoring in exam that can be just googled if we ever need it
i mean yea ive never seen unis in the same country have different starts to their acad year
If it's not something that is gonna be important for your further studies idt it really matters, but usually you can't just memorise stuff to do well in maths tests (besides in computational classes)
i plan to memorise 4 or smth chs of hartshorne for finals
what about memorising whole proofs like legit line to line
I don't think you should be asked to prove a result from class on an exam, which is the only scenario in which this will help on its own
exactly its a waste of time right? the education system is lowkey so flawed
Also, if you actually understand the material you don't need to memorise the proof, only specific steps/equalities
Adapting a proof from class is a different thing which is usually a fantastic exercise
I have math mock tomorrow and I didn't start yet what can I do to uhh help me study faster??
its neat how math n phys has different pedagogies for these things
i actly dont know what a good healthy physics exam wuld look like tbh
might not exist
You in american school or smt?
what will come in exams then tho? like in real analysis
because our endsem was just proofs
is Penn a top 100 school? Certainly a good school
I'm gonna be teaching a course in an american university which I am attending as a PhD student, but attendance and grading policies are always relevant
Who cares
I see
You're asked to prove things, but not things you've seen previously
which PhD you doing (I might sound dumb hope u dont mind)
looking at undergrads its crazy how uni ranking means nothing
Maths
no matter where u go, the default response is "they rly let anyone into college these days"
i see
Maybe similar things, but you have to do more than just paste a proof you've memorised
look at the 7th one- and first two. like these are useless right
i mean
Sad how in my area (u can identify), taking Physics Chemistry and Math or liking any science related subject apart from Biology means you are guaranteed engineer
like there are a lot of stuff apart from those
for workhorse courses u probs want to at least know the core ideas and be able to recite it
or maybe i am just dumb
Awful. A lot of this is either a 1-line application of a theorem (that they're usually cueing you up for) or "regurgitate this proof"
but theres probs more effort that can be put into these. ask the professors
I'm not entirely sure I understand, script
RIGHT OMG like this was our endsem and i was so angry because i think i didn't learn shit from real analysis course
time to go grade aah
I mean, you live opposite side of my world, so i could understand
i think i would love to grade tests
Ok I actually went back and found my actual final (choose 5 out of 6).
For example, here's the first question:
Let f be differentiable on all of R, such that f'(x)>x for all x>0.
Define a_1=1, a_(n+1)=f(a_n + 1)-f(a_n)
A. Prove (a_n) is monotonically increasing
B. Prove lim a_n = infty
wow those are actually good questions - i can't read the image tho.
do u guys make your own questions according to the theory?? so the students actually have to think to solve it
There's a lot ways to get questions, you usually don't come up with them unless you get some idea, but adapt and borrow proofs from other sources. The more obscure the better, although well known exercises are often also important
this seems like such a better way to make students learn ngl. the current system just makes sure u have a degree and nothing else. i believe a question where a student can write their own thinking about any theory or topic can be good too- like what did u understand from this and that theory and extra addition they want to do
How is the job market for mathematicians in Canada?
I am studying bachelors maths in Italy and i would like to emigrate to Canada after my bachelors since my girlfriend lives there. I would love to reunite with my gf asap which means id have to continue my studies in Canada, would it be possible to get a full scholarship for a graduate maths program as an international student? Does anybody know how it works?
There was a professor I had in modern algebra, who was like the hardest teacher I ever had, half the class dropped before the final.
When I went to see him at office hours mid semester I asked a question and showed him this weird thing, and he got really smug and was like "thanks for showing me."
Later I asked him more about this right before our final, and he was like "Oh man I wanted to put this on the exam but you remembered it" and that was my wake up moment that college exams are brutal at the late undergrad level lol
Yeah, it's an invented math thing so it's kinda locked in my brain
It was basically that if you take a multiplicative group of integers, you can produce a group of exponents.
like, Z/mZ -> E_m
Here E_m is probably most easily defined as the set of power functions (monomials) under composition, with the restriction that the monomials have to have a relatively prime exponent to phi(m)
like E_m 's set is x^e with gcf(e, phi(m)) = 1
I defined it differently though, and in a much weirder way. It would have been cruel to put on the exam imo. You can ask mathematical questions about that in #math-discussion too, idk if this is the right space or wtv
I still don't know what this E_m is used for, it's related to Carmicheal's theorems maybe
It's fine to talk about it here, there's another active convo in math discussion rn
I defined the E_m thing under a bijective correspondence, but the correspondence doesn't actually have a group law, so that's about it really. Idk if your that interested for me to blather about it.
I'm not sure I understand what the exercise would have been exactly on the exam
tbh I have no idea what he was planning
But I showed that this is an abelian group
Also should the map be from (Z/mZ)^x?
No, it's a composition map, it's smaller than Z/mZ
Are you also allowing negative exponents? Otherwise what is the group law exactly
and (Z/mZ)* actually
You said multiplicative groups of integers, and then you used an additive one, that's why I'm asking
oh the group multiplies the exponents
I didn't say additive I don't think
x^a β’ x^b = x^(ab)
This is the cleanest representation but it took me a while to even form it this way, I just found this and then realized it was technically a thing afterwards
it might have a formal name tbh, idk that much about it
Also, I think m might have to be prime
which was deceptive, but I haven't looked at the composite case all that much
yk E_m might be confusing you, I'm using that as a name, not as something I am aware of with a group E
I'm saying that Z/mZ is the additive group of integers, and you said multiplicative
So are you allowing negative exponents?
Or fractional exponents?
Otherwise how is this a group?
Take m = 13. Then there are 12 elements in the multiplicative group of integers. Ο(12) = 4, so there are four elements in the group when m = 13
Actually this can't ever be a group. You can't compose 2 monomials and get x^0=1
Are you doing computation mod m? Cuz you haven't said that
for example x^1, x^5, x^7, x^11
no, I'm doing it mod Ο(m)
It's a diffie hellman type operation
Ahh, I see now
the elemtents are the functions that are a special set of monomials. For 13 I think it's isomorphic to Z/2Z x Z/2Z, I forget exactly.
might be Z/4Z
Why is there math in my serioussy
It's not disallowed, and there was an ongoing convo in math discussy
What I'm saying is you wrote Z/mZ which is the additive group of integers
Here
yeah that's not what I meant, very good point lol
Ok, glad we cleared that up
It comes from the multiplicative group
The function thing that I implied there by an arrow is a discrete logarithm, hence my interest. It's not in an encoded form though, which I find fascinating.
I guess proving this is a group would be a nice exercise, in this presentation.
yeah, I'm sure something like that was in the profs head
I see
Proving it's a group comes from using the properties of multiplication
Inverses is tricky until you use phi(m) is the size of the multiplicative group of integers, and phi(phi(m)) is the size of the special monomials group. It carries the properties from Z/phi(m)Zas a group
or maybe I should say (Z/mZ)* more accurately
In general Z/phi(m)Z is not isomorphic to (Z/mZ)^x
oh that's good to know
In that case (Z/mZ)* is what I truly mean
To be completely frank with you, I'm a bit of a crank about this idea, and I may be making minir mistakes. Morally the idea is sound though
Yea it's only true for odd prime powers, 2*odd prime powers, and also n=4
Only primes with a multiplicative generator have Z/phi(m)Z = (Z/mZ)*, interesting
or m I suppose
I think one can use whatever to spell out a theorem. But for me it's currently "Can you use it in a sentence" and "What's the definition"
idk, it's a lot
The thing is, rationality is also based on axioms. So, why couldn't it be another axiom?
hey everyone

wtf what i did not expect the number to be that high
Be extremely wary of infographics like these unless they actually list their sources properly
Key 2025 statistics on domestic violence in the U.S. Discover the overall rates of intimate partner violence, breakdowns by gender and relationship, youth and LGBTQ+ partner violence data, differences in types of abuse (physical vs psychological), and how often incidents get reported or survivors se
Like don't get me wrong the rates at which women and queer people are victims of all manner of violence and abuse are quite shockingly high
But I'm immediately wary of this kind of statistic because "raped" is one of those words which has so many differing colloquial and legal definitions that it's challenging to know exactly what this is saying
I get the purpose of these things but I feel like at times they can be damaging
Yeah, I probably should look into how they defined it
Yeah I traced it to there
I unfortunately traced it to the most dystopian fuckin shit I've maybe ever just stumbled upon while browsing the internet

Hello Maya's alt

I wonder what prompted this. I do not recall them explicitly targeting such surveys
I believe this is enforced across the entire federal government no
Iβm talking about a specific order that prompted this notice
Oh, this is the executive order that prohibits certain words
They're making an overall effort to control what the truth is, sadly
It seems to me that because the report also examined the relation of gender to IPV it triggered the βgender ideologyβ alarm
geez Trump's america
"...disconnected from truth" I think you mean "...disconnected from Truth Social"
I hate this administration

Wtf is this country

What are your hopes though? What is it that you're afraid of losing?
my hopes are I will get to eat 2 delicious meals. I am afraid of losing those meals

I find it funny how to feel more rational under my dumb and annoying personality, guess negatives have positives accompanying them.
I don't understand the "how to feel more rational" part of that sentence
Oh my autocorrect is a bitch, I meant how i feel more rational
i don't find your personality that way. am I mistaken or have I not met you for long enough?
Annoying personally
oh I see. you don't have to answer this but why?
Basically, I seem to have two major "states" I settle into that are quite different from eachother
fair. either I act like a silly s**tposter or I am normal like this
Oh, acting childish, curious of things I literally know, worries, imprecise movements, saying random things, i am probably forgetting some others.
Also quite frankly, a sensitive idiot.
I see... I feel like I act the same too sometimes. I just when I meet a person don't know how to introduce myself so I just put out a random meme and pray. I feel like I act offensive to people without knowing about it.
Oh yeah, acting different around new people is perfectly normal iirc
I guess. I just feel like I'm too impatient and can't wait and it just tires some people. I don't feel the best about myself
I mean that's quite normal, no?
I'm not sure, people dislike me for it so I think not.
weβre ALL like that bro dw π
people also dislike normal things mate
oh thanks. phew
good point
This is an incredibly normal feeling. The whole college comment on this, "Ducks that look nice on the outside, but underneath it's just funky waddling legs" comment always stuck with me. I think you seem both very likable and pretty reasonable from what I've observer
thank you so much. this made my day. I really love this quote here. I might just be too worried of myself, and that may hurt me in the future. thanks.
Yeah I talked to a professor who told me this to cheer me up. Or maybe it was the dean of students. At any rate that man was a genius
Another thing, my perception is pretty weak sometimes, but I think if I understand correctly, others feel the same about you here, that you are nice
I see... that's a really nice professor/dean of students. Thanks to you for cheering me up, and thank the man for cheering up you.
I see... thank you for seeing me that way. :D Have a great day!
hey so idk who needed this but idk if anyone needed to hear this, Iβm proud of you. seriously. youβve pushed through stuff that most people never saw or understood, quiet battles that didnβt get recognition but still took strength to get through. that matters more than people realize.
even when it felt small or like it didnβt count, it did. getting through those moments, choosing to keep going, holding things together when it wouldβve been easier not to, that takes a lot out of a person. and you did it anyway.
so yeah, you should be proud of yourself too. not just for the big obvious wins, but for all the hidden ones that didnβt get noticed. they still count, and so do you.
This server is gushing with happiness today it seems
My absence tends to have that effect on people
There's some good joke here but eh it's #serious-discussion
I needed this today. Thanks :)
Hope you have a great day/night
Hello
Anyone here studying at university of Debrecen or university of pecs
Dammit, god dammit. I fucking spent all day trying to do already overdue homework instead of trying to study for the calc 2 final in a few days like I wanted to. im gonna fail i was already cutting it close by planning on studying over the weekend but I cant do anything
been there, adhd executive dysfunction is unforgiving
always have had a hard time planning stuff like studying or now working on my PhD stuff in the long-term
My sis says to just focus on the present, don't be upset about the things I can't control, like the past... but why? The problem is that I can't control anything
shes the only one I can even talk to about this
have you watched kungfu panda and when the turtle master says that quote
I'm sorry to hear that, but hey you're already try your best to put on that, that's your limit you can't over push it
We all have limit and that's okay
I hope somebody sees what you have been putting
Why is probability it's so hard I'm gonna cry
Seems like you do lol
hi
Hi
Hi continue
why is no one online here
Because its serious discussion
Say the thing you want to say. People will engage with it if they want
@cyan silo out of curiosity, what do you mean by βthe deep stateβ exactly
nato fbi cia ngo's
basically the traditional anti soviet and now anti russian establishment
basically liberal democracy in general
In my opinion both socialist parties (Actual ones unlike bernie sanders)
and even certain right wing parties (democratic ofc)
are good
but the centre left and centre right is bad
@glass peak
Why exactly do you support both socialists and right wing parties? Thatβs pretty contradictory
well let me tell you a bit about my background then
I am russian american.
Now socialism and right wing parties have differnet philosophies, however most often they converge at one point as far as I have noticed
their philosophies are contradictory
but their policies usually are not, socialism as considered in the west is liberal or democratic socialism.
However when you compare it to actual marxist parties and parties that later included vanguardism and one country part to it, you will notice how socialism and right wing basically converges at a point

when you compare socialism in one country philosophy of comrade stalin
Or when you see GDR in pracitce, you will notice that GDR was basically what AFd wants today.
however with a differnt rhetoric
I fundementally believe that both far right (not all, certain elements) are meritocratic, centralized and civic nationalists.
which are similar to that of authoritarian communists.
@glass peak
@glass peak ?
No, I want you to tell me specifically what it is that you support about both βright wing and socialist partiesβ
i would say discpline and anti globalism. Although I believe in the international worker I am against the international buisnessman and exploitation of workers
i support trump because he is destroying the american deep state and nato
literally no other reason, i dont like trumps ideology
but he is a lot better than biden to whom our taxpayer dollars were used to kill our soldiers in ukraine
So what youβre some sort of nazbol accelerationist?
im not nazbol it is a contradicotry philosophy fundementally
So is claiming to a socialist trump supporter and a socialist who supports the invasion of Ukraine
i am by ideology and philosophy a marxist leninist.
However I feel that we ml's can cooperate with right wing parties and that even though philosophical goal of marx (communism) cannot be achieved in that way, we will end up with various states which are socialists by nature atleast
A disappointing number of left-wingers support the invasion of Ukraine for some reason
I am a Russian american, what the hell do you think I WILL SUPPORT?
A lot of people online claim to because they think that being anti US is just being pro good, but itβs fundamentally out of line with any actual left wing beliefs
regardless of βthe deep stateβ and its existence, trump did really fvk these up lol
Yeah, I doubt it goes much deeper than "US is Bad, Russia is against US, so Russia is good", but it's wild to see from people I'd expect to know better.
Well idk you claim not to be nationalist and just support the working class which should put your firmly in the anti war camp
bro...what is more concering is the fact a socialist will support nato
that is not how it works at ALL.
NATO was fundementally an anti communist alliance that now wants to integrate ukraine into its globalist structure
how is supporting international buisnesses pro worker?
I indeed support the working class, but I do not support the amercian buisnesssmen who will profit from destroying ukraine
I am sorry to say but you have no idea of what a socialist actually is.
Western definition of socialism and how Russia and traditional socialists view are at odds with each other
No I think a supposed socialist larping as a man who constantly attacks trans people, takes away womenβs rights, is an accused sex offender, has brought about immigration raids akin to nothing seen since the 40s, has started multiple wars and continues to fund and support a genocide is more concerning but thatβs just me
Iβve never mentioned NATO here, thatβs a distraction
you literally fail to understand my point
I think youβre confusing online tankies with actual socialists again, easy mistake to make
THAT IS THE EXACT REASON I SUPPORT HIM, HE IS DESTROYING US AND DEEP STATE, NATO AND CIA.
which will make it easy for actual communist movements to rise.
if we go by your definition every single old person in russia is a tankie lmao
supporting soviet union is the standard view of socialists, not of "Tankies"
playing identity policits is not socialist, it directly contradicts marx
left wing and marxist are very differnt things, i already said i hate the centre left
by your definition marx would be a tankie, stalin would be a tankie, zhuganov will be a tankie
lmao stop being so disconnected and so biased towards west
who do you consider an actual socialist?
Stalin would most definitely be considered a Tankie lol thatβs where it comes from. Members of the British communist party who supported the use of tanks in the suppression of the Hungarian revolution
I donβt care to play no true socialist with a you, I just think you seem very deeply confused and find your LARP as trump frankly disgusting, especially as someone who claims to be a socialist
so stalin was not an actual socialist?
i indeed find trump disgusting too brother, but you fail to get my point
that is exactly my point, USA being disgusting will make people loose faith in global insittutions and nato, and thus help rise of socialist movements throughout the globe
literally "no USSR was not a socialist country"
I understand what accelerationism is, I think itβs stupid but I know what it is. I still think thereβs quite a gulf between that and larping as trump but I really donβt care to continue having this conversation
oh you are talking about my pfp?
oh okay then ill change it bro wait
@cyan silo Do you think Trump is catalysing the breaking down of America or is it largely out of his hands?
why so serious
At first I thought serious discussion means discuss why I can't get a girlfriend π..
I mean that could turn into an engaging psychological and societal conversation if you approach it the right way
Bro... What is the right way
Talk about your view of the world, research it, get views from others, contrast it with yours, and aim for the truth.
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5891994
What do you think about this paper ?
wts wrong with ur pfpic ?
this guy is def trolling
mind blowing.. bro ....do you self study quantum physics
there's no way you can be a far right socialist
u can , if u have the will, maybe be a far left republican. people are absurd, to say the least, they are contradictory, we aren't born pro or against.
we must be like I want money to share it with the world, which would make us socialists who capitalise, like robin hood
What sucks about the Hungarian Revolution is how the protesters were mainly libertarian socialists, rather than say capitalist-backed insurgencies
There was a clearly better side in the dynamic

Quick question where do u live
?
Which city do u live in
wild question π
I liked it better when AI did not exist lol
Now there is AI slop all over the internet. It feels the same way we ruined earth with pollition but orders worse (not in that sense. The earth is more important than the internet)
big win, terrifying implications
It is indeed a big win
while this means the AI hell slop may prove to not be as bad as we feared, it also means that the costs of running AI have grown a large amount. I wonder what could possibly cause that other than production issues related to the servers
real
and if it's production issues related to servers and data centers, then I bet it's environmental
it says "can cost more" so I bet this is some sort of premium AI model with super high compute
and the internet will still be filled with bad AI model slop
notsobleak
you mean the corporatizing is helping us this time?
well here's the thing, we know how corporations work. So if it's just certain premium models, those will eventually spread to every provider, and will eventually take over features that used to be free, while also making them worse
that will be a big win
the AI will get more expensive and worse
tfw humans survive the singularity because corporate greed neutered skynet to ineptitude
seriously
I would never have thought
that would be the reality we live in wouldn't it
let's see what sad orphan yj :( has to say
What's up
tbf, the internet was filled with slop before. The quantity and acceptance is astonishing.
I mean maximize corporate profits and my personal likelihood of employment? I have motivation
before LLMs though the slop was easily detected and filtered out because it usually looked awful
add on that I can easily convince myself it's a moral good
Yeah, I guess it just reveals how shallow many people's appraisal can be
I fear for the children
the awful thing about LLMs is both that there's so much more slop now and also it takes longer to filter properly (if LLM text can even be distinguished reliably from human text)
I doubt you can reliably distinguish, I mean there's flags but like say a game uses LLMs to generate offhand one-liners
of course that's less sloppish, in small amounts
but the point is that the sample size is small now but it should grow in proportion. And a lot of people seem to think that the LLM writing style is a result of the training data, if it is then it's not a stretch to suggest that it can evolve in a directed manner
yes
which books did you do for starting?
i do courses but like 4 years ago i read one book on it that i dont remember the name
also that was more relativity
oo.. i do a course but i like reading more than hearing lecture
Hey its eventually guaranteed to entropy itself out of issue
Will there be water at that point tho?
I honestly donβt know much about it, I should definitely look into it, but yeah this isnβt out of line with the history of the USSR
Thereβs also an element of discrimination because since sweat shops in Nigeria and Kenya were majorly involved in curating the training data, people are more likely to assume Nigerian English or Kenyan English are just LLM text
True, rip the Socialist Revolutionary Party
Itβs gonna be so cool when Gavin Newsom becomes president and I still canβt switch my passport gender from M to F because he, being a snake piece of shit, found it opportunistic to cater to transphobes for electoral support
If biological computing makes it through, the most valuable thing a human can do would be to just die so that their brain can be harvested.
Passports are international though. I don't think he even has jurisdiction to change passport norms world over.
I have a U.S. passport so it affects me since he has jurisdiction over my passport
He still cannot change the definitions of Gender used for passports.
gross wtf
I feel it's wrong. I saw it in a video essay on YouTube.
Yes he can, Biden made it so that gender on passport was a matter of self identification and Trump changed it to reflect genders on previous passports or gender on birth certificate
Why are Americans allowed to change something that is standardized globally in the first place? ππ
Is gender on passports standardized globally tho?
Absolutely not lmao
I would assume so. Because it was designed long before the T part of the LGBTQ revolution and the T part of the LGBTQ revolution looks very different in different parts of the world.
Wtf is a T part
Okay then what is this guy basing his "internationally standardized" claim on then
Like they said, they just assume that's how it is. There's no international standard, and every country does stuff differently with their passport. There is some amount of international standardisation but mostly in the boring parts like how passport numbers work.
It doesn't matter how gender identification is decided on a passport because it's not like it's something border control can verify or test against
Many countries allow you to self identify your gender on identity documents. Some have more hoops to go through (like getting a doctor's note), but it's ridiculous to pretend this was uniquely American
- It isnβt standardized globally
- If it is standardized globally, I would want the standardization to involve ability to change gender on passport with self ID or just straight up abolishing gender on passports
Itβs actually crazy when I learned that SEPTA transit cards in Philadelphia had gender on the card and were so strict that bus drivers would deny entry on the bus for trans people
Gender on passports is kind of stupid to begin with. Either gender is something you can identify by looking at someone, in which case, you have a photo, or gender isn't something you can identify by looking at someone, in which case it's useless on a passport because it's impossible to verify for the people who would need to do so
Yeah I would more prefer gender not being on a passport
Like thatβs crazy that finally ended just 14 years ago
My birth certificate doesnβt have a gender
That's insane
Gender stickers to prevent sharing, what a load of bollocks, I guess it's fine to share if you're the same gender
People are the same gender are never frens and never help each other out, this is true and cannot be disproven
thats not how any of this worksβ¦
in norway itβs easy to change your legal gender for the time being
I am thinking of revisiting combinatorics to better appreciate the beauty behind each question, and eventually I want to connect it with computer science. I plan to start with the book Proofs That Really Count by Arthur T. Benjamin and Jennifer J. Quinn. Is this a good choice? If not, what else would you recommend?
but up until 2016 this was conditional on having gone through bottom surgery, in particular then: sterilization
itβs interesting that this was not actually required by law, it was just somehow how the process had become standarized
The Trans rights revolution.
It does. ICAO allows users to get non binary gender passports with X as the gender.
Under International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, gender (known in their
guidelines as βsexβ) is one of four mandatory personal identifiers contained in a passport. A
passport must include either the letter βMβ (Male), βFβ (Female) or βXβ (unspecified) both in the
visible fields of the passport and encoded on the biometric chip.
8.2 βXβ is not a required option under ICAO guidelines and it is the decision of the issuing country
whether to offer this option or not.
8.3 βThere are currently no plans by ICAO to change their standards and requirements.
i mostly agree with this
i think there's something to be said though about border security staff being allowed to do strip searches
The USA just delays passports with X markers so much that people don't get it at all.
in which case gender of passengers beomes a bit more consequential
that being said, they are allowed to strip search whomever they want so maybe it doesnt matter
X is not a required option
So the guidelines don't actually matter if the issuing country disagrees, and there are no plans to change this.
This is also tangential because it doesn't* touch on people who want to change their gender marker from M to F or vice versa
The right thing to do is to have both columns, Preferred Gender and biological sex. The second one will be required for emergency medical care and security purposes.
like gender identity vs AGAB?
Oh, it is just not allowed in the USA. ICAO mentions nothing. So, they get away with it legally.
It's not true that ICAO mentions nothing. It explicitly allows countries to reject the option
like the thing that would fully resolve this is probably having something like gender identity/srs status/AGAB as three things
people with ummm for lack of a better word, anomalous sexual characteristics doesnt fit into this scheme?
tha show up on a databse when you scan the passport
It's the AI summary that says that. I can't find an official mention of what ICAO actually says.
Let me know if you all do.
!Noai
Please do not trust ChatGPT or similar AI tools for mathematical tasks, as they often generate output which "sounds correct" but has numerous factual or logical errors. Use of these AI tools to answer other people's help questions is strictly against server rules (see #rules).
I don't see how AGAB matters, especially if someone has already undergone gender affirming surgery. To me all this does is make the document permanently out you as trans.
I struggle to envision a circumstance in which you'd need medical attention that depends on your biological sex characteristics in which someone would have to look at your passport to figure that out
X covers all the non binary people and anomalous ones like Klienfelter's
Supposed to cover*
like if they strip search you having some awareness of what your uh
anatomy is might be relevant
cant they just reject the X field, plus agab is based on well phenotypes
What if I have boobs and a dick?
agree this would probably be uniformly better than AGAB
They can. But, governence doesn't worth that way. You have to understand that WHO had to classify transgenderism as not a mental disease according to governance. It's not fair and it's a lot more complex than we think.
Many intersex people don't identify as nonbinary in terms of gender, but also aren't definitively one sex or the other
Oh and changing it will be a nightmare
You think WHO (and the DSM-5 etc) reclassified transgenderism as not a mental illness because of "governance"? And not because of developing science and understanding?
The problem is a lot more complex than people being bigots. Gender is wrapped in too many governance nightmares and I'm sorry that you all are the generation that has to fight to change this
No, the exact opposite. It took till the 21st century for it to be accepted on paper (governance) it when it had been around in cultures for so long.
Governance doesn't evolve at the speed of science π
Also, DSM-5 is a governance nightmare in itself right? Sorry all my knowledge comes from a single Ted Talk from 2015.
It mentions how aggressive they were in deciding things were diseases. Like just kids being kids was being flagged as ADHD and kids were being dosed with medication.
Ah, I see what you're saying now. Yea, agreed. The worst part is that it can be easy, evidently by looking at how it works in countries like Norway, but certain powerful groups are using anti-trans activism and gender essentialism as identity markers to consolidate power
Absolutely. The history of psychiatry is riddled with so many fucked up shit
Bruh, you guys are trying to change the world. Are you surprised that the people you are fighting against use governance as a way to stop you? π€·ββοΈ
Tbh, I am not exactly a supporter of the Western Transgender movement lmao
But, everyone has a right to live simply and comfortably
How did we get here I just arrived
Things should be debated openly instead of being hidden in red tape so that people can't even contest it.
That's not my point. What I'm saying is that these issues weren't a big deal or a central identity marker 50 years ago. Even 20 years ago.
This is similar to how abortion was not really a problem for most american protestant Christians until about the 1970s, when Jerry Falwell and Paul Weyrich went around using the issue of abortion as a moral.panic to consolidate power within american evangelicals, and they did this because they wanted more support for segregation in evangelical institutions
Can't the exact same be said about Trans rights though? It wasn't an issue till a decade or so ago (just the gender preferences part, not the genetically different section)
Homosexuals have been fighting since World war 2 for context
Trans people have always been a part of the LGBT movement and fighting for their rights. A lot of important figures in the struggle for lgbt rights were trans. Idk where this narrative trans people or the movement for trans rights didn't exist until a decade ago is coming from.
Biosocio literally posted an article about a problem that trans activists were fighting 15 years ago
Also, there is no ulterior motive or consolidation of power going on in the struggle for trans rights? Not in any way comparable to the e.g. issue of abortion
I'm a little confused why "a decade ago" is being conflated with "since WWII"
Also saying people have only been advocating for gay rights since ww2 is also ridiculous. That's just when the issue became globalised and started gaining marginal popular support
I mean, where I am from, Trans rights have been an issue since 5000 BC lol, but it was always about genetic ones like Klienfelter's syndrome. It wasn't about the gender identity conflict. They just wanted a clear non binary classification and got it clearly (only in the year 2013. So, literally a 7000 year struggle).
The gender identity driven issues are exclusive to the Western trans rights movements. Heck, when the trans rights movement arose, a lot of them were quite opposed to people with gender identity issues identifying as trans, but they were eventually included in the movement under a single banner.
I'm not sure why you keep conflating intersex with gender identity. One can have Kleinfelter's and not identify as nonbinary
Can you provide proof for this?
In the western view of transgenderism, yes.
In the modern scientific perspective
Would be hard, it's my memory from a news article I read when I was 19. I'm 28 now π
Not really. It's just nomenclature. Nothing scientific about what you classify as what.
Where I am from, "Transgender" refers to "Intersex" from the western view and the Gender identity issues are completely absent from the discussion.
Yes really? Science today understand gender and sex as distinct things, and this is backed up by all the best evidence we have. It's not just nomenclature
You see now THAT is nomenclature. Differentiation of gender and sex is a scientific observation
Yes, but intersex and transgenderism are too conflated in the western view and I don't agree with it. These are two separate debates.
For me the newer one would be the nomenclature right? π
Conflated by whom?
What is this argument even about
I'm just being asked Socratic questions on my views about the Western Trans rights movement
Feel free to join.
Wasted too much time today cant bother anymore
ShiN is saying they are explicitly not conflated, scientifically separable, etc.
In the Western view. I have literally seen people say that Intersex people are not trans because they have a clear gender identity.
Also, trans people (in the "western" meaning) have existed in many cultures prior to the term even existing, and I'm specifically referring to people with a distinct gender identity.
Here's an example of a non-intersex person rejecting gender entirely in 1776:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Universal_Friend
The Public Universal Friend (born Jemima Wilkinson; November 29, 1752 β July 1, 1819) was an American preacher born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, to Quaker parents. After suffering a severe illness in 1776, the Friend claimed to have died and been reanimated as a genderless evangelist named the Public Universal Friend, and afterward shunned bot...
Exactly. If scientifically separable, why under the same umbrella of "Trans rights"?
Ok well, I'm talking about scientific consensus. I can't really argue against memories of news articles from 10 years ago and things people have said
This is a political debate that has nothing to do with the scientific understanding of sex and gender
Bruh, like I said, I can give an example from 5000BC and the word used for intersex person is the modern-day equivalent of "transgender"
Public Universal friend is explicitly NOT intersex, and isn't transgender but rather rejected gender entirely, which was my point. The concept of non-binary non-intersex people and also non-intersex people identifying and living as the opposite gender has existed for centuries
Okay, then aren't my qualms about clubbing all those different world views into a single "Trans rights" banner, which I have to either support or be called a hater more legitimate?
I didnt know this person existed
Like I have to either reject gender completely or I have to support Trump. I can't have a nuanced opinion politically, solely because the Western Trans rights movements compress several complex philosophies, often counter intuitive to physiology, into one banner which I am forced to agree with just because I know that a lot of people under that banner have suffered for centuries and they really deserve a break.
It's generally disrespected here to "catch strays" with another political conversation during a different political conversation
I tend to talk a lot about and focus a lot on Israel, ICE, other draconian institutions,
but in terms of absolute harm, they pale in comparison to how many people will suffer/die when the climate crisis really starts to accelerate in severity
And with that, the fossil fuel industry has essentially exercised free reign to engage in unlimited drilling and extraction, and our media institutions have been so severely captured that it barely makes headlines and if it does itβs considered not severe at all
Meanwhile South Asia looks insane
Nah, as far as reports go, the rich will be almost completely unaffected by Global warming at the rate it's accelerating. We have completely stopped a runaway global warming (+4Β°C scenario).
No we havenβt lmfao
I think this reveals your core point though, which might be (correct me otherwise!) that you feel like things are extreme politically speaking, and trans rights are getting lumped into a larger political body that becomes polar.
i used to think global warming is unreal but now when my cold water tap delivers boiling water i think otherwise (indian btw)
Kurtzgezat did a video on it. They quote the scientific literature in that. It's about why we shouldn't lose hope of stopping climate change.
move off world already
tell me you were wishing for your bjp supporter relatives to burn to hell without telling me
We were always a desert geographically and solely dependent on the South West monsoon winds for cool weather. That's why the Northern Hemisphere has summers in August and we have summers in May
Like we have never seen peak Indian summers πππ. Imagine that πππ
Actual peak Indian summer can cook steak to medium rare.
whose we here? india is not a desert except for a specific state.
(Thankfully, it can never happen)
Kurtzgezat laughable failed to name the culprits behind the climate crisis who have spent decades deliberately obscuring and denying the phenomenon because he wants to be as palatable to a general audience.
Any action against the climate crisis requires antagonism against money hungry highly organized powerful actors
If weβre gonna survive the climate crisis while maintaining modern industrial capabilities, the system of capitalism cannot survive
That is literally the very first line of the video. He literally mentions how those corporations spread hopelessness to continue their idiocy. Can you watch first and then complain? ππππ
Read the entire thing dude. I wrote how the South west monsoon is the only thing keeping India from turning into a desert. That's why I said "geographical" desert.
Kurtzgesagt saying that is agood reason not to believe it
Honestly this whole thing where the Indian subcontinent just decides to be 10 billion Β°K reminds me of what happened to Brazil not that long ago
You need to study geography again. Only Rajasthan is a desert, rest most of the northern india is Northern gangetic plains, which lies by river and where life can survive + vegetation. I agree that south west monsoon plays a big part but if you neglect the himalayas, the western ghats and the plateaus for their part, then thats on you
It was similar temperatures last summer (?) and I remember thinking in that humidity that's oppressive
not to mention the whole thing that happened in the UK before that, where no one has AC. Kids were like chilling at the arcade just to be happy.
Oh my God. Can you actually read what I am writing or just going to keep saying the same nonsense?
Is your counterfactual thinking absolutely 0?
If South West Monsoon didn't exist, India = Desert. Talking about how awesome India's current geographical diversity is is completely irrelevant to what I am saying......
thanks man
@umbral ocean heres an analysis of your statement
When you get img perms eventually, become an Embed Assistance steward
This is a message from (EA)
alright bro
So, despite giving 5 followup explantations, you can analyse one sentence from the first message, which doesn't even include the explanation?
Analyse this please π
I agree with your point about south west monsoon But to think that india would become a "desert" is theoretical and hypothetical. We still have wells, rivers seas lakes groundwater to support the system. but yes there would be an imbalance in absence of south west monsoon
Okay, simply think about this. Entire Northern Hemisphere has peak summers in August. We have peak summers in May (even in the Thar desert). We literally don't even experience the hottest part of the summers in the Northern hemisphere and we are still the hottest country in the northern hemisphere.
I feel like its because of the heat dome high pressure system which is causing such high temperatures, otherwise it could have been that the general cold wind flowing from west is disturbed and hence the situation
Not to forget we have monsoon in july-august period
One must not neglect geographic impacts; the Himalayas have a significant warming impact on India by keeping warm air trapped
True
Hah, case in point. here we are ruminating over the past, and what could have been.
yeah technically true @ the Lovecraftian adjective
i wish humanity as a whole would adopt renewables and nuclear power faster, there's definitely some Big Oil interests actively working against that in "the West" esp. the US
Global warming is just another thing that makes me feel like I'm at a true dead end in life. All this shit goin on, never able to keep up with the world and losing all my oppertunities to experience the world as it should be.
it's just ridiculously more efficient than burning some distilled dinosaurs we're already past the 19th century
can we talk about how sugar coating things or like being fake nice is actually more bad for a person asking advice
i see people sugarcoating things on reel and stuff
yea person experience i actually don't give out fake compliments - only the genuine ones
if you try to make everyone happy you end up making no one happy
These are all valid terms to sign but I wish it was a two way street of professionalism because there's so many vaginoplasty surgeons who (tw violation of medical ethics) ||are massive chasers and want to sleep with the transwomen they do surgery on where they 1) are less accommodating to the wishes of trans lesbians 2) purposely fuck up the surgery in subtle ways if the patient doesn't reciprocate flirting/suggestiveness||
"hippocratic oath/medical integrity my ass" - them probably
surgeons are pretty notorious for not giving a shit about the hippocratic oath
oh what the actual fuck
if you are a doctor just be a nice one π
that's messed up i lowk would support R&D in robotic surgery tools (and ofc more trans representation in med fields which ig would partly mitigate this kinda stuff, although i feel like med in general is a cesspool @ ethics and morality -- very hard problem(s) to tackle)
I will but I'm not going into surgery, it's 1) far more of my livelihood getting fucked 2) I'm just not good with visuospatial intelligence
I think it is highly variable, but I'd usually prefer honesty
As something people are happy with, as something worth experiencing, and living in. Hearing people complain about the weather, like the heat or the lack of snow, always disturbs me. They aren't happy now, they ain't gonna be happy any point in the future, either.
which field do you intend to specialize in?
either psychiatry, psychiatry + family medicine, psychiatry + internal medicine, psychiatry + neurology, or being crazy af and doing a combined psychiatry + PhD residency program. I've also kinda found interest in OB/GYN as I seem to do pretty good testing-wise on female reproductive topics but I would have to undergo that medical rotation to really see if that's my thing
I am ultimately more interested in being a medical researcher than a full-time doctor, and/or travelling the world doing work in developing country
