yes if you've done stuff correctly you just apply k <-> sigma_k
then figure out what is being fixed
i basically explained like
70% of class field theory over Q
the remaining percentage is how you relate these things to splitting of prime numbers
like (1+i)(1-i)=2 thing?
yup exactly
yeah so there is a theorem that says every abelian extension over Q lies in some cyclotomic extension
abelian here means the Galois group is abelian
you can also see in our example we had Q(sqrt(2))
we realized this as a node in the tower of fields in some cyclotomic extension
for Q(i) (the example you demostrated)
Hi
here's how you find which primes split
any prime p that gives you chi(p)=1, splits
for chi(p)=-1 this means it remains prime
and chi(p)=0 means it is ramified
this checks out since 5 = (2+i)(2-i) and chi(5) = 1 (when you take the correct Dirichlet character)
This kinda spoils which one lmao
this is going to be chi(1)=1,chi(3)=-1.chi(5)=1,chi(7)=-1
SO AGAIN realized over Q(zeta_8)
I wonder what's the last one
oh yeah we had Q(sqrt(2)) so Q(sqrt(-2)) should be there too
there we go
now we have them all

4 is not a prime to begin with
wdym
^ whats this mean?
ye
this says primes p=1 mod 8 and p=3 mod 8 split
I love when mathmaticians be like:
,w (2-sqrt(-2))(2+sqrt(-2))

what im saying is
if you look at 3 or 11 say in Z[sqrt(-2)]
These are no longer prime numbers
they split
3 = (1-sqrt(-2))(1+sqrt(-2))
for example
but things like 5 stays prime
the dirichlet character is clearly depicting this behaviour
It's like we are getting the same info in a different way
for this case we have chi(1)=chi(3)=1 so any p = 1 or 3 mod 8 should split
and indeed 3 and 11= 3 mod 8 splits
on the other hand chi(5)=-1 here is saying p = 5 mod 8 stay prime
you can try and see if you can factor 5
(2+i)(2-i) = 5
in general you can't just test out random a+bsqrt(-2) to see but in this case it's fine since something called the ideal class group is trivial
essentially you are trying to see when (a-bsqrt(-2))(a+bsqrt(-2)) = 5 right
for what a,b
in Z
ye

yeah ig if u dont care about splitting of primes think of these things as machinery to solve questions like these
is there any sol over Z of something like a^2+2b^2 = p
this result is saying yes if p=1 or 3 mod 8
that looks suspiciously like something else ive heard of
y^2=x^3+bx or smthn
ah
elliptic curves
yes there are other methods to go about these things
in general it's hard to solve a diophantine equation but number theory gives you nice set of tools to solve some
in fact before this was the method attempted to solve fermat's last theorem
keyword: attempted
you factor the equation over Z[zeta_n]
once again cyclotomic shenanigans enter
but the problem is the factorization is lying to you
in our case Z[sqrt(-2)] the factorization didnt lie
so we took things for granted and treated everything fine
but if your ring is not something called "unique factorization domain" you can't do that
this is why I mentioned ideal class group
If the ideal class group is trivial then you are good to go
to demonstrate this idea see that 6 = 2x3 = (1-sqrt(-5))(1+sqrt(-5)) in Q(sqrt(-5))
two different factorizations
it's not unique

well obviously here you have to check if 2,3, (1-sqrt(-5), (1+sqrt(-5)) are irreducible
but they are trust me
idk do you think this is a feature or a curse
hm, im wondering if I have a certain Z extension, if both those can reduce into another set of smaller primes, and if that can always end up working out like thati n the end
can you give me an example of what you are trying to say?
so like, just as we took 6 into 2,3, and 1-sqrt(-5),1+sqrt(-5), I was wondering if I can do something like
(ab)(cd) = (2)(3) = 6 = (1-sqrt(-5))(1+sqsrt(-5)) = (ac)(bd)
in some other Z extension
ah so you want to shuffle stuff around freely with no troubles?
n-nno...
ah wait you want to find some Z extension such that for example ab = (2) = (1-sqrt(-5))?
i did want to shuffle actually
yeah for shuffling you have to be a bit careful
btw the way to fix this factorization issue such that you guarantee things are uniquely factorizable is by introducing ideals
left and right multiplication is no longer identical then?
do we lose associativity as well?
no you dont lose associativity
multiplication is commutative too
you just lose unique factorization
yeah
in a sense it may be thought of as a multivalued ness for prime factorization

i wonder if choosing a specific factorization will ever pop up as something important
just like choosing certain +c values when integrating can be important
well they are useful in the following sense: they give you counterexamples of unique factorization
I like this concept of factorization or not
i think this is a really good way to get into ring theory if you are into that
you learn how to fix this issue of unique factorization
well not fix
it's more like
you make something so that it becomes unique factorization
so instead of working with regular numbers
you work with that thing
it's guaranteed to be always uniquely factorizable
but if it happens that things are fine and you can uniquely factorize normally then you drop that
I should really stop procrastinating on working thru real analysis huh
this stuff is so much more interesting
yeah real anal can be tedious
You can try reading through this book
It's fairly beginner-friendly compared to other sources
$\zeta(3)\approx\frac{\pi^3}{6\sqrt{15}}\sqrt{\zeta(2)-\frac{5}{6}}$
Yeatte
Yeah, then they can stop talking to me about random equations that look neat.
lol not really
you learn more of these things anyway
What from?
Like?
playing around with special functions
finding special identities
computing random integrals that turn out to have the zeta function as part of the answer
Yeah, but did you do a lot of finite stuff, and complex finite math?
Or do a lot with cellular automata?
sure but not CA
I got into that recently thanks to speedy
Yeah, I tend to like finite stuff a lot more. A lot of this stuff you talk about is mostly like "what."
So, I'm going down the road of geometric algebra stuff mostly.
holy shit we got another one turning into wraith
@zealous garden you should be proud
Yeah, I asked people to recommend me books to buy when I had money for it.
wedge product is nifty
Also, I imagine these special functions in like different dimensions too.
Not just the complex plain.
My main interest is in the n-dimensional versions of them and like looking at them from different angles too.
This book was nice but traumatizing
Half the text was exercises haha
And its just hard
the actual learning comes in the exercises
Yeah it does, a lot of the content is fresh in the exercises
$e^{\partial_x} = T_x$ but what about $e^{\omega_x} = \partial_x$, it does give some cool stuff actually
Yeatte
$\omega_x(x)=-x\ln(xe^{\gamma-1})$
Yeatte
What's the nDeltoid x Wraith + Speedy?
That might be a goal to be.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
technically water COULD enhance the flavor if its mineral water
:D
but I'm definitely getting ahead of myself and just being annoying
LOL
@ancient lance How's SNU delhis mathematics?
Depends on what you want to do honestly
Like pure or applied maths ?
pure
So they're revamping the syallabus, I'll clarify and get back to you in a bit
I'll also get the prospectus?
Alright, thank you!
what's that
like course outline and all that
Like this course in this year
Though I mostly wanna know what kind of opportunities might exist there for someone who has self studied some of the stuff
You can do research under a prof from year 2
In year 1 (for obvious reasons) they don't allow that officially
I see
I don’t even wanna check any of my professors’ syllabuses
I know they’ll piss me off
I’ll save that for when I actually start classes ☺️ let me not ruin my break
okay, so like this will be the outline, I'll figure out if I can send the rest of the doc or not in a bit
I want my break to end 🥀
5 more days, my god
Ragebait
Not falling for the bait.
real analysis year 2?
what's the CCC stuff
how are the elective options btw
Basically 1.5 credit courses ( except for evs ), which are half a semester long
They are offered by professors and not the dept so they can change every semester
I'll send a list of electives In a bit? ( Eating rn)
this is very stupid
every Feynman integral in QFT:
@latent edge https://arxiv.org/abs/1704.06996
I have evaluated up to 1100 digits of precision the contribution of the 891 4-loop Feynman diagrams contributing to the electron $g$-$2$ in QED. I have fit a semi-analytical expression to the nume...
insane paper
good lord
Hi nG.
howdy
Yes, unfortunately
Pretty nice, if you're capable they will waive pre-requisites easily
going good
Degloving
What's something you've done recently?
or like found interesting besides like QED?
@onyx reef shoudl I send a list of some of the elctives offered in the past?
yeah loads
Anything you think I'd be interested in?
Or understand really more so.
probably not
although I can certainly recommend some things which are more of a starting point than jumping straight in where I am lol
I mean I'm reading slowly through stuff quite a bit already with Linear Algebra and some Electro-Magnetics. I'm not sure I'd probably get into fully. I work pretty slowly on stuff.
Take your time I'm kinda busy rn too :)
okay, so you can take PhD courses, but those aren't recommended ( obviously)
These are the undegraduate courses that are elective ( 600 is masters level I think, though we don't have a MSc anymore)
@onyx reef
Uh, there are a bunch of PhD courses you can take too, I can share if you want
can someone help me
Yooo nice
Yayayaya functional analysis
oooo
(doubt I can get that much self study done before uni anyway 💀)
<@&268886789983436800> random server ad?
Should I?
Is it fine if I ask you for course details on specific ones every once in a while?
(friend me if you don't mind)
Sure, I'll send detailed course description then ?
done
Ty!
Is there a way to get discord to stop showing suggested channels
Besides temporarily clearing
oh damn, I'm doing course selection rn lol (for context im going back to college for personal reasons)
Lol, i select my electives for the upcoming semester myself in 2 days
a have a notebook from a year ago and I have no idea how I knew the stuff I knew, even though like, I saw what people talk about here it doesn't even come close im like dumb in comparison
I feel the same at times 😭
I forget what I did a few seconds ago.
😭
nut
which is the hardest course?
also, could u send ur phd courses? that'd be fun
BASED
@jagged forge
hello
Yeah pretty much
For over two decades, Professor Toshitaka Suzuki dedicated his life to studying the Japanese tit — a small songbird native to Japan’s forests. Through years of careful observation and experiments, he discovered something incredible: these birds use grammar-like rules and combine sounds to form meaning, much like how humans use language.

Hi I need someone’s help
I would like to create a cloud of points that is deterministic and would like a way to do that
Any creative ideas?
A PRNG is deterministic, just set the seed explicitly
Some ideas
- you could download free 3D assets and turn them into points
- PRNG for a distribution
- Literally basic shapes like planes or cubes
Installing Blender could help
I was hoping the point clouds would turn out non-i.i.d.
"a cloud of points that is deterministic" sounds like a function whose domain is a finite set and codomain is R² or R³
I’m looking for ways to generate deterministic point clouds that are not i.i.d. ideally coming from a structured generative process
I don't know how the concept of pseudo random numbers and i.i.d. relates to each other so Ill be quiet now and wait for other responses
Who? Beyonce?
I want to make a feline based conlang
durga
Thank you regardless for looking at my question 🙂
you could take some of them as well, doesn't feel too different from the previous list
I need to do courses from the previous list to graduate:(

So we're making sht up up now 🥀
Yes that is meant to be a joke related to making shit up
Ts looks like the most obvious scam
@shut thunder replacing ln n with ln∣n∣ loses the imaginary part here
so definitely not
thats where it came from
For complex numbers, quite unusual to use n as your variable but the idea remains.
Right, that's exactly why you shouldn't replace ln n with ln |n|
You would lose solutions if you did

Hi Guys. I need help and i need a person that is very good at math and at explaining. I am in 8th grade and i am bad at math. I am not the best at math but i wanna be cause i am interested in math. I wanted to ask if someone can give tipps how to get better at math?
practice is key
Hiii
practice
Thomas Edison once said: I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
Hello!
Compile error. Laugh at this user
Chrollo spotted
Is the first 1 real
One of the most important things is your mentality. If you think you’re bad at math, you’ll always be bad at math. Math is learnable, intuitive, logical, and it makes sense at every single stage because it was literally made to make sense of stuff. Other than that just practice a whole bunch
only when you think you are bad at math can you make progress
intuitive
makes sense at every single stage
Lies
You can't pretend that some ideas and break throughs don't just come out of left field, or that even if the idea didn't that you'll have an exposition that does the work to take an intuitive or sensible route, supposing one exists
I’d have to disagree on the basis that if math was not intuitive and did not make sense, it first off would not have been made and second off it would not pose to be a solution to the problem it sought to solve in the first place
Obviously group theory won’t make sense to an elementary schooler but with the right upbringing it can make sense to them in college
does anyone know if I'm allowed to post a google form survey that I'm using for a math assignment? It's about fashion shows and follower counts, and it's for a statistics project, but I know it could be considered self-advertising sooo....
Those reasons don't actually make sense
you are not, sorry
thanks! :)
if it would not have been intuitive it would not have been made
Yeah, cus I could never possibly just stumble upon some truth and not be sure of why it makes sense
I mean first off those are edge cases and cannot be used to categorize the entirety of math as being this mysterious unintuitive confusing discipline that literally everyone uses to gatekeep it from others
Second off it doesn’t matter that you “stumbled upon a truth” because oftentimes you do so by looking at other intuitive forms of math that makes sense and finding something in those
This idea that math is beyond comprehension is so false because if it wasn’t then it wouldn’t be math, math is literally made to make things in the world make sense to humans, and maybe to fully know all the math we need to know to make sense of the universe, we need an even higher brain, which in that case it wouldn’t be math and would be something else entirely
but... the hard questions (edge cases) are the ones that remain unsolved
And unsolved questions do not represent math as a whole
You can’t give the Collatz conjecture to a math PhD student and tell them because they didn’t solve this they aren’t doing math
what do you think phd students do
Either solve unresolved shi or push a known field even further
I get that but that isn’t that I’m saying
I didn't categorize the entirety of math as anything at all, you did and I pointed out it wasn't true
Reread the convo
My entire point is you made a sweeping general statement that was false because of these other cases
Not that these other cases are all there is, or even the meat and potatoes
And I completely reject your notions of limiting math to human understanding
That's absolutely nonsense
Human understanding can't even be rigorously quantified, defined, and limited in the first place
Firstly what is a human, and secondly what is understanding
Thirdly should we take the combination to somehow be more than the sum of the two words
These are ultimately very hairy and very irrelevant concerns
All my point boils down to is that math is intuitive and makes sense. This is just true. If it doesn’t for someone that means they haven’t internalized the concepts or the underlying logic takes a while to understand.
Why is this true? Because it was made to understand how stuff works in the universe, and uncover the deepest truths about regular things. So if it did not make sense, it did not serve its purpose. If someone finds some relationship between two mathematical objects without a proof, then under regular mathematics, a proof must be made that proves this relationship. Proofs are the ways of making math understandable and intuitive, and so yes, for any mathematical thing without a proof, it’s unintuitive and not understandable, but notice that the prerequisite for it to pass in the math world is that it must have proof
If it takes a while to understand; it, by definition, is not intuitive
I disagree I think something can be intuitive but one may not have the ability to make the connections because the topics are not natural, like id argue linear algebra is really intuitive but it’d take a while to explain to a 6 year old
There's no "I disagree". This is definitions
If you disagree then you are refusing to speak English
How are these questions
Answer them if you think they're so obvious
I disagree with that too because you’ve disagreed with me the entire time while arguing about the epistemology of humanity
proof takes decades for someone to understand
but it's simple and intuitive cus I have a proof
Galois theory is just algebra fr, you're right
I did ts in middle school
Thanks
A human is the biological definition of a human and understanding is pretty much being able to recall and convey the ideas either to yourself or another being
"The definition is the definition", you weaseled out of a very hairy question very quickly
I asked you to answer, not defer
What is your understanding of the idea you're trying to convey
Dude ok: 4
What Makes Us Human? 11 Important Features
Biologically, a human is a member of the species Homo sapiens, a highly adaptable primate characterized by bipedalism (walking upright), a large brain relative to body size, reduced body hair, and complex cognitive abilities like abstract reasoning, language, and tool use, all stemming from our evolutionary lineage within the great ape family (Hominidae).
Googles andwer
i dont really agree with your reasoning here. like yes its true you can eventually make sense of something thats initially unintuitive. you could also convince yourself the sky is green if you spent enough time thinking about it. that has nothing to do with the "purpose of mathematics".
So we aren't humans?
I mean I walk upright I like to think I have a large brain relative to body size not that much body hair I guess?? And I mean compared to an ant I can reason complex things
Idk abt u tho
The modern "human" is homo sapiens sapiens, twice. Homo sapiens is technically a separate species, much like homo habilis, homo erectus, homo denisovan, homo neandertalis, ...
None of which are humans by your definition
There's also the issue of further human evolution
How about you attack ideas and not people
At what point do we stop being humans
And how across the wide spectrum of humanity, do you define the bounds of human intelligence and understanding
I mean we aren’t arguing the purpose of mathematics I’m just saying its not healthy to think of math as just being wizardry when in reality its complicated but not otherworldly
Can a human possess non human understanding? If not, what is the limit of our species for you to meaningfully postulate what lies beyond
No one is arguing this strawman
Im not attacking u it was a attempt at being funny
no you don't get it, I called you stupid as a joke
Ok that’s what I’ve been saying then 😭 have a good day bro
Homie is about as consistent as my shit (I need to see a doctor)
Suffer because they're broker than us undergrads sadly ;-;
these are all very vague terms but thats not what you initially said. you said that "math is intuitive and makes sense at every stage because it was made to make sense of stuff". im arguing that truth in math has nothing to do with what math was "made to do", and that you can make sense of literally anything under the right conditions, so your claim is meaningless.
mathematical truth is not grounded in what math was made for, but in what logically follows once the system is defined
smbdy say smth interesting here discussy 1 sucks rn
Ok we can agree to disagree then because the fundamental ideas behind our claims are not aligned
Real analysis has tons of things that are not intuitive whatsoever
...
Speaking from experience that is extremely false
And yet mathematicians of the pasts were misled by their intuition many times
i feel like this is true for any subject
Quite possibly yeah
Huh?
What have you discovered archimedes v2
They also had the disadvantage of knowing like 2 people who were smart and educated cuz their town was like 1000 people large and most smart people were only uneducated peasants
Unfortunate
Then the library of Alexandria burnt down "DOH"
Then they had like 2 opinions to learn from
and no one questioned the greek sources for centuries
@deep mango
Cooked
i'm glad these knowledge checks are relatively easy. this class a lot more involved than i thought it would be.
Now it’s your turn to write a “your syllabus pmo” email
tfw I have to do a safety test for chemical hazards for a math teaching position
Hilarious shit
I'm totally teaching the kids how to play with fire that's why
Hi Rakko!
it's fine for what it is. i was hoping the course would be more technical, right now it's not
DO YOU THINK I WAS DUDAZZ SUGGESTING YOU WRITE AN EMAIL LIKE THAT
well we gotta tell them what's what
Then you can show your true self and write the left
many such cases
smh
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
tfw people complete the safety quizzes and still get in troubles in the chem lab
You're bald?
ok maybe I shouldn't laugh cuz a prof literally passed away because of a student's mistake
Fair.

How was your first day back at school
Did you work on your project lil bro
cities are, systems of systems. having proper pipelines to keep these cities organized is paramount to proper functioning.
and we need governance, to some degree, to help the cities remain sustainable because of population growth
My friend is bald af he likes to shave fully and damn he has some good muscles

Your professors don’t post the lecture notes online?
Some do
Some don't
They expect you to write stuff down in lectures
this class is for a certification so no lecture notes exactly
Morning everyoneeee

this is the kind of thing thats nice when youre married for 10+ years
not a first date
One time i directly texted to him "you have to tell me if you want me to make any advances because im not going to make you uncomfortable" and he just ignored it and switched topic
Its his loss honestly
Im like 9001x more a catch than TC
But he has a beautiful behind so i will tolerate it
(Also hes my friend by now)
But this was pretty sad the first time
Also since when did you say "girl"
people who ignore direct questions and switch topic annoy me. especially when they do it poorly. some people have a natural playful charisma that lets them do it effectively, others dont
Am I teaching suremark
oh the NERVE
WHAT DID I FUCKING DO
.
right? ally's nintendo head
Crazy
im ngl i dont know what this expression means
but i agree 👍
it's exactly what it sounds like. her overly cooked burria head had the nerve to trip bout teachin girly
Yeah i think tbh this is supposed to be a "yes please make advances on me" but i am absolutely under no circumstances enabling that shit. CONSENT IS HOT.
What's an example of someone effectively doing it
Discussy 2 is popping off
What if I do my textbook in vc so I am peer pressured to actually work on it
hi rays how you doing bbg
All he knows is beer and cheese, so it's good I teach him a thing or two
Ik hes the kind of person who would prefer to not really be asked and i do not care
ugh
its hard to describe but i have a friend who does it really well. one of her tactics is acting really stupid as if she was born yesterday. and everyone falls for it, they just believe shes actually like that.
dw i got a worse reputation 🤣
Body language responds but words dont, but words do respond in a way which enables them to respond in a way which allows you to then segue back
hiii im bedrotting
i decided to speedrun the rest of brezis this week
Lots of strategies but i do this stuff a lot
Same actually I have my copy of the textbook on my bed but this part is so ass I cannot get myself to do it
real
I might read through Brezis without doing the exercises and come back to doing it
My paper copy is in my dorm rn tho
yeah might be a solid strat
I usually suck when not doing exercises tho
More than I do generally
i do fine but i get bored
i got one more chapter in this module. but idk if i can do it tonight. i'm gettin tired and i gotta cook this meatloaf
Opencry taking over image031 again

@silent junco I might go on vc in a bit to actually be productive hopefully
hmm i might maybe join you, no promises
i hate discord its sapping the life out of me
i need to be more like valley and chipotle

Hello
wait until you see the struture theory for finitely generated modules over Noetherian rings more generally
This sounds like a fun course IMO
Youth, Class and Mobility
Course Summary
This course examines the complex intersections of youth, social class, and mobility in post-
millennial era. It begins by asking, who is a youth? As there is no universally agreed upon
definition for youth, we begin by exploring youth as a cultural category. We work with a set
of following questions. How do young people from diverse backgrounds navigate the
promises and perils of neoliberalism, education, digital cultures and global flows? Does
education promise a stable employment to youth? How does education, migration and skilling
transform the dreams and aspirations of contemporary youth? How is class embodied and
occupied by young people? Does their self-fashioning intersect with caste, class, gender,
language and region to produce vastly different life trajectories? Through an interdisciplinary
lens combining anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies, we will critically analyse
aspirations, stalled futures, and new forms of inequality. The course challenges students to
rethink concepts of agency, structure, and social change in rapid societal transformations.
Shame the grading would kill me
Course description for Bitching and Moaning 302
that's how we blend it and drink it and understand the concept.
literally me all of 2025
I wonder if it tastes like paper
It's the taste of knowledge

This is how I feel when reading Hall
Lmfao isn't it less abstract than Bourbaki/Humphreys tho
Less abstract? Why would I want that
mfs when they complain about nice things
Basically nG
Ngl you had me in the second word
Thought it was class field theory
What do you need help with??
LMAO
Hello chat
hi bro
i recommend you do rd shwarma
Hello!
Hi
Sup bro.
Good wbu
I am just procratinating maths
Oh
I got exam in April.
Ohh
And I don't feel scared at all, ig that's what's making me procratinate
Lolllll
js study bro
hop off discord
and try to understand stuff
I am.
Thanks anyways.
np
K, I need to review, because I'm forgetting all my precalculus book
hi fiscussy 2
How good is Stewart's book
I have it now
😋 real stuff twin
@restive salmon
So weird that there is literally this here without slowmode but everyone isstill at #discussion
Idk why either
It makes sense just cause it’s where everyone else is congregated
Yea
inertia is quite strong
i lost the game
it go ok other than no bf
Real 😔

how do you get someone angry guys think about it?
Rage bait
not the place, sorry
gnna cry to daddy and mommy
Idk depends on the individual
That how they take it
depends on the art
alr lemme get one rq

hi
I have seen that awfulness and thankfully I’m not doing algebra
@thorn wren
ok
thankfully
I’m doing engineering bs that will never be applicable to the real world

When I fuck up thousands of people will make calls to the company I work for and possibly not be able to do so because I broke their telephone
Neuromechanics
slightly different stakes
What is it about
Engi grad student
So I’m still working through stuff
Technically a grad student
Working on what topic
Classical (continuum) mechanics
quantum mechanics soon
Where are you at?
Penn State for UG
I mean in continuum mechanics
I’ve taken two QMech courses that are required for my major and are giga stupid in how much they cover for a second year course
I took two courses (one of which covered rational thermodynamics) though I am currently reading through two of Marsden’s books to get caught up before applying for PhD
I’ve said this before
hello :3
:3
Yeah, you told me before, I think, but which topic are you on currently?
yeah a lot of this standard content is kind of a lot
hewwo :3
i have to take more engineering courses because my dumbass decided to double major instead of just changing it
but i think my engineering courses are leagues easier than whatever miz is doing
all his homework problems look cursed
what do you cover?
most of them are more applied than theoretical. i think the most theoretical a course has been for me was sigproc
im also curious about the applied ones
and what is usually covered by engineers at a higher level in general
some optimization things, embedded systems design, hpc stuff, dsp chip design, vlsi things in the sigproc direction. in the cybersecurity direction its like malware analysis, cryptographic hardware (this one im really interested in), hardware oriented security and trust
(especially how broad or in-depth it is)
i mean most of my courses arent super comprehensive because at some point youre kinda expected to be able to pick things up on your own as needed. like theres a zoo of engineering tools and techniques at your disposal, and theyre constantly becoming obsolete and reimagined. so really the goal (as far as i can tell) is to train you to have the theoretical fundamentals and the practical experience to be able to find and apply tools as needed.
I see
as far as depth goes, i dont actually think theres a lot of depth to computer engineering compared to other fields (disregarding the theoretical cs side of things, which is basically not covered at all in my degree)
im quite excited to learn about some of these things, but i cant really imagine giving up math at any point of my life
Thanks for the insight!
What’s a good resource to study precalculus (textbooks, youtube channels, professors ,whatever)
I also do not want to give up on math, which is the main reason why I still consider staying in academia ig
also, for example, what is the furthest covered in your optimization courses?
Banach Differentiability (higher order Frechet stuff) and Manifolds
From Abraham Marsden
Wrong :p
i think its quite beautiful to pursue something you love in the face of uncertainty. that said, i hope to have a solid exit strategy by the time i hit grad school
my engi courses even at the grad level are pretty pee pee easy
Except for the quantum course which I had to teach half the students about complex inner product spaces, vector duals and shit because the prof expected us to know it even when my uni’s background for math is subpar
some lagrangian/cov stuff, optimal control theory, convex optimization
WAYY more advanced than mine
Rays you realize you’re pretty far ahead of me right lol
??? its literally the opposite
I had the background (func anal) but the problem is the prof expected all of us (engi majors) to have it (we did not)
also its not like these courses give a rigorous treatment of anything
Well we do different things too
yeah true
I’m more mechanics-centric
im gonna try to finish brezis within the next couple of weeks
sigh the way analysis is done in my university makes me want to die
the algebra is great though
Classical mechanics for rigid bodies is nice theoretically (phrasing) but is nightmarish
Peak, way ahead of me
physics scares me
I’m working through Marsden rn and I’m going to review Brezis later but I’m also taking a course using Brezis anyway
me every time I touch nG's langlands stuff
And the prof is extremely focused on Sobolev stuff so that’s what I need
peak
are you ever going to get into opalg stuff
For funsies prob
I wanted to take the C* alg course but it conflicted with a required course for my major
sad
many such cases
I want to know about C* rep stuff for gits and shiggles
I literally don't care about C* algebra (for now)
I’m a pure engi major who lingers in the math grad department like a zit
lmao i was the same till I switched
I am going to be the only UG and the only engi major in a small Functional Analysis and Diff Geo course
This is gonna be interesting
Separate courses
youll mog all the grad students lmfao
I wish I took more physics
Probably not

I am rusty with topo
very rusty
For the cohomology stuff I should be good
One other prof offered to let me take the algebraic topo course in case the nonlinear elasticity course shits the bed
Really annoying that I don’t know if it has given courses start on monday
What’s your schedule for next sem
ah, okay, that's nice
you mean differentiability of functions between Banach spaces, right?
In the Banach setting ye :3
