If your parents went to Harvard, then your socioeconomic status is likely better than that of many, and that is gonna correlate with academic success throughout your childhood, and in particular with the strength of your application

Now the way it works at Harvard and such is that probably over 2/3 of applicants are qualified, but the class size has to be < 10%. So a lot of qualified people are gonna get blasted regardless

I'll fudge some numbers to indicate the phenomenon. Imagine they take 2000 students and have 40k applicants, of which 30k are qualified. Now of those 30k, let's say a 100 were to have very serious connections (their parents are not just alumni but known donors). Imagine they all get in.

It will still be true that having connections makes it far more likely to get in: among qualified applicants without connections, the probability is 6.35% rather than 100%. But if connections didn't matter at all, the probability of a qualified app getting accepted is 6.66%.

So for those who have connections, the fact that connections influence admissions improves your chances greatly. But for those who don't, unless they were to literally have almost 2k people who have connections and get immediate priority (which empirically doesn't seem true), then yeah it won't make a huge difference for everyone else
