That's really true, i should realize that more often because usually i think "i have to read all of this"
I don't think I've ever read a math book in its entirety
i dont think ive read a book in its entirety before (all pages), nonetheless choose to read one voluntarily out of interest, so this isn't usual for me
i've read lots of wikipedia articles on topics i like to get a general conception of something
i think it's totally possible to get away with only reading the main stuff or things you care about
that's not only possible, it's infeasible to do otherwise lol
you can't read anything and everything abot everything
Right
especially not if you wanna do other things too such as chores
this seems simple enough! this is the first chapter in his book
In my mind it'd be 20x harder
just be patient and make sure to stay consistent and before you know it you would've learnt all about this stuff
good luck on your journey!
oh, yea, sure
Yayy
Nice
Have fun starting math
Thank you! 🩷
Well I've watched this video because it kept popping up on my recommendation page, I understand some of it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbpCTjmw85g
Yessss i love set builder notation and proofs
Yeeee
i learned some of that in openstax in the first page of calculus 1
Wait do you use N for Z+ (positive integers) or for Z+ union 0
uhhh i haven't gotten that far yet
I need an actual person's opinion
Damn
My teacher says "nobody uses N to include 0" when yes the hell they do what is he on about
i love the cat in your profile picture, it's so cute!!!
it depends a lot on the field I think but most people use N to start at 1
at least in the fields I'm interested in
He's a little autistic I think.
👋 hey
Maybe you can notate that with N sub 0?
hi hru
He let's you do anything to him
Good
and as for CS it's 0 I believe?
Can I get some advice for UG Mathematics
on what part of UG math
True, I understand why a hs teacher uses it to start at one, but saying it never includes zero is just false, I've seen PAPERS that define it with 0
Pay attention good and practice, my advice
For a CS student
sure, although in most places in math 1 is standard
Exactly
Yeah, I hate when people say absolute statements in math though
People just use notation differently
Same!
You can even start with different axioms!
I prefer the naturals to include 0 but either works
Same
I understand it's to simplify it for kids, but like saying it NEVER is like that is just a lie
I use N for naturals and N_0 for naturals and 0
I include 0 bc I use Z+ for nonzero
Given how much longer it took to invent 0, it’s reasonable to say 0 isn’t as “natural” as all the other counting numbers
i think this is what i'd use personally too!
The unfortunate truth is that the majority study just for the test and will then forget everything, so the nuances are irrelevant and slow progress
But we're in the 21st century now, so i think it's ok now to consider it
tbh its just annoying to have to say "for all n\in\mathbb{N} with n\geq 1" a million times
True... sadly I hate how AP still has idiots who don't care about math
That’s also true, though it’s not like kids instantly know history of math
Right
u can use Z+ or something but even that's a bit sketchy notation because + notation means \geq 0
My point was more that it’s not as easy to come up with 0 yourself
Yeah
that makes sense
Anyways, how is discussy v2 doing today all of yall
i was amazing personally, we had a ton of snow where i live!! hby?
That's totally fair!
Nice! Scared a bit but like overall feeling euphoric rn
Same!!
Am i weird to be euphoric about learning math
it makes me giddy
since i was in preschool
Idk if that's euphoria bc like you are doing something that makes you happy
And euphoria is inexplicable happiness
Typically and it's also unfulfilling in a sense
it's definitely explicable uhm
sometiems
Depends on the person
Explicable with science yeah
That's what i've read in definition before, in that case i'd definitely call myself quite elated or happy when i do math
Wait isn't it just elevated happiness with seemingly no reason? Or can it have an obvious reason
do you guys like logic in everyday use? outside of math
I don't tend to use logic outside of math but I am quite young
but you use it every day
that's the type i mean specifically
Ohhhh just logic? Yes. I thought you meant stuff like nand and or nor xor iff and stuff like that
i'd describe it as the process of reasoning
Ah, maybe some philosophers use those specific ones often?
I wouldn't say they use that type of logic, more reasoning, but I'm not one so idk
I'm probably younger than you so take what I say with a grain of salt
i feel like in some philosophy servers ive been in in the past some people who were talking about philosphy used some of the logic notation
Oh, i wouldn't have guessed, because i'm a new adult so usually people are older than me i think
Hmm... neat
Oh damn, nice!
I uh am just barely able to be on this site...
Lmao
Almost able to drink tho, give it a year and a half
Oh!
i've never drank thankfully
actually i dont think i can drink before 21
Oooo
legally
Oh i thought other places allowed you to get at 16 with the private property thingy
Yesss in one debate server i have like over 20-30k messages in a single year
Ooo im not sure maybe
I know atleast canada allows in my province/city
Personally, nothing brings me quite the thrill as much as debating something to gain a shift in perspective, because someone other than me has lived out all of their life, they've lived completely different experiences than me, some shared but mostly are different
Yeah :3
Ah
Here in virginia I think you can drink if you're above 16 if you do it in private property with parental approval
that makes sense!
Oooo Virginia does it too? Nice!
But you need to be 21 to go to a bar or whateverbor to purchase your own alcohol
Also adults purchasing alcohol explicitly for consumption by minors is illegal
How's your math journey been going
Mhm idk why but when i was 13 because of the pandemic i got pretty lonely so i wanted to debate with others since then just to talk with them intellectually but also see who gives better arguments
And ofc children can't purchasw alcohol at all
Fair enough
Slow and bad
Why?
Awww 3: I hope you can achieve what you are trying to learn ❤️
Haven't done any new maths at all this year, life is a struggle and all
Fair enough
How's yours? Mine's been slow since i've started geometry on Khan Academy, because I dont wanna get burnt out so i have that on pause, but in the mean time i'm learning intro to proofs, HBY?
Thats okkkk!!!
Haven't really had time to do much with recent stuff, thinking has been getting harder and harder for the past week, waiting for it to shift again because it seems to come in cycles
i see
that's totally fair
I wonder if there would be any way to get diagnosed with stuff without my parents knowing
i envy the day that i get to sit down and think about geometric shapes and their properties and transformations
Maybe as an adult idk?
Ooo nice
Tyy, it's always been my dream to do some really cool stuff in math
Wish I could skip time, 4 years is gonna be hell here
You can do it girl!
Wait do you want me to use girl or girls
I don't want to offend you
i'm really glad i'm 18 today, because that means i'm still young
i love my youth
Tysmmmm
Hehe either is awesome! 🩷 ty
Np! I remember hearing you talk about that tho :3
u only become a teen for an x amount of years
System?
Ye :3
Ooooo
Have you learned logs in math yet
I've been introduced to Eulers number in my algebra class
Enough to understand, not enough to explain tho I don't think without using inverse or opposite
Ooo, same
Wait what was the wikipedia for the plurality terms again
i used to look at it in a calculator as a kid and press random buttons to see what they did, did you do that too by chance
Totally 2 years ago
i dont know :((
Hehe
Aww I guess I'll try to avoid using terms so I don't say the wrong thing
No it was a wikipedia but like not
Well you can ask before you say it, i believe
hai :3
I think it was something like pluralpedia but I can't remember
Oooo thanks :3
Same!
im really awkward irl, even with my family
it brings me a ton of anxiety to talk with them, nonetheless strangers
This place is chill :3
I wouldn't say I'm awkward, more scared, that's why I don't talk to people irl much
i'm kinda both
i'm fragile :3
hi
hi speedy
girls B)
HSF INFECTED YOU AS WELL
:3
Girls are girlcool tho
girltrue,,,,
Chatgpt is the best way to learn knowledge without it being easy for others to know you searched right
Bnuuy!
!bnuuy

i love bnuuys
Yayyyy
True
there's a few that ended up living in my yard and i see them around some days
Ooooo 👀
they're very cute
Lil stomp when they angy
it's like me fully failing to be intimidating like ever
Lmao
Remember people, we are all valid, cis or trans, gay/lesbian or straight, happy or sad
Do you enjoy math Skye? 🫶
yes
i'm studying complex analysis right now
it's very beautiful
I'd bet
Omgg yea!
same, from some of the stuff i saw online
Yayyyy
i'm starting to learn how to integrate complex functions along curves
Ooooo!!
Wait what's $\int \frac{1}{z} dz$ For complex values? The normal one doesn't work 3:
Definitely human
i'm not sure
i think it depends on the path?
Bad enough I need to say C is a local function
Oh yeahhhh I heard about paths for complex integration
They add different stuff
not an expert by any means obviously
omg if u dont find the normal thing then it can be shown in complex values? idk calculus
the antiderivative of 1/z is just ln(z)+C, but you run into branch cut issues
thank you
The normal one is invalid for complex numbers as abs is the magnitude for complex numbers
Oooo
Cool!
do you know the mandelbrot set? i've seen it a lot on youtube, it's really cool
i've heard of it
Ooohhh nice
i think i once had the idea to code the mandelbrot set in C++ but i was biting off a little more than i could chew at the time
like i wanted to use a graphics library to visualize it
Omg that'd be so cool to do!
i bet i could do it now
Yesss, i've wanted to do this
that'd be so much fun
i think it would be
What is your favorite area in math?
probably calculus and analysis
very useful in physics but i like getting into the theory
the proofs in that area of math are very elegant to me
maybe someone will say i'm crazy
Why
people have different opinions
i'd love to learn some proofs in calculus after i finish learning some stuff
Warning, many people say spivak is more real analysis bc it's proof heavy
So it may be harder than a regular one
i think i'll look at it after some less complex books then, ty!
have you by chance read Book of Proof by Richard Hammack
I've heard some go straight to analysis though so you can do whatever
i've heard of it
ooh
ah i've read a bit of it actually
I forgot I probably shouldn't use the shortening bc people may not know the terms 😭
trust me i was losing it at "real anal" too
Niceeeee
I KNOW
I can't say real anal in discussy because some peeps would think it's nsfw 🥀
Yea it's worth it to try and see if you can or wanna do it and are up to it?
i think a shortening like that isn't worth it
analysis isn't too much longer of a word
It gives more intuition from what I've heard because it shows WHY it works and stuff
chat i choked on my water a little bit
In person it's fine bc it's pronounced different atleast
Yea, don't you have to do it yourself? like thinking just like how a mathematician back then would prove stuff
are you ok
Yw
Idk im not into it yet as I'm trying to learn basics first 🤷♀️
i read real analysis but shortened yesterday in math chat and i was so confused, i didn't make the connection that it was just shortened for analysis
i thought it was like a theorem or something
I just realized the crying emoji might seem rude bc it has a different connotation
3:
eh i think the use of it was okay
Omg yea, nuance is very real to consider and implications
I just know i use some things VERY differently than others
i think it's good to consider what others might think of something, for something that can be misinterpreted badly
Like I think I've heard people say the red heart is like creepy or only reserved for some people but I use it more like a support thingy or like "love this"
o i didnt know that i use it all the time
Some people use grey for that tho
Same
i usually use the blue heart just to be safe
Fascinating, that makes sense
Ah
At what age do most relationships last, I feel like there is an area where they last very short
i use a pink heart all the time because pink's my fav color
gotta love pink
Pinks so nice
mine used to last like a day as a teen but i've been in 3 relationships right now that have lasted over a year, i'm 18 now
Yesss
i'm single :3
im poly
Nice
I was apparently in a relationship at 7
Idfk
Apparently?
oo nice
I guess I forgot 🤷♀️
Thats fair cuz a while ago
and u didn't know that it was one
That's so far back bc I can't even click
I meant when it happened I guess I forgot about it
Clear as day
Oh
i've got a few
I remember breaking my collarbone at 3-4 3:
omg cool!
3333:
they're mostly boring though
i don't have too many interesting memories from 3 years old
It's gotten fuzzy over the past few months...
mine were like of my cousins and looking outside and one time some fireworks in like 2011 celebrating the new year
i think like in the past couple years i feel like i've gotten alzheimers even though i'm young but i've been reverting it by playing chess and thinking critically
Every single day i try to think super critically, because i'm terrified to lose my memories
I've been thinking I'm mentally ill and had a new mental illness for these past 2 months but it might just be my hormones
i believe that hormones are a big factor in emotions and behavior
Not the only one of course
(Mentally ill as in sick, like horrible person)
Everything changed like 2-3 months ago I can't even remember how long ago it was I know it was before school started
Well you're still young
True
Unfortunately I am young as well tho 3:
Same, at least relative to people's ages in general maybe?
I wish the medical system quit infantalizing minors I will do to my body whatever I fucking want
But no I need to be 18 3:
i think that's an excellent requirement for a lot of things in the law
Yeah but unfortunately it also hurts me because I have to spend 3 years basically in hell before I can feel comfortable in my body for once, and then another half a year or so to recover
how about 4?
i have some memories of being born and being a few months old, but idk if they're fake or not
also not too interesting but they're there
i have a memory of riding my cat as a toddler
oooo
Awww
Honse car
i used to play with hammers as a toddler
my cats treated me like their adopted baby when i was a toddler
Dust bunny? Yum. Rock? Yum.
am i the only one that didn't try to do scary things as a toddler
why the FUCK IS THIS NOT PLOTTING
thats really cute whenever toddlers and dogs/cats interact
Like dumb stuff?
a lot of fucked up memories
3:
:((((
now there's a cat at my grandma's house that i play with when i'm there
Yayyy
hii willow
Okay that's enough internet for you James -Willow
Sorry, I had to step in.
yeah i was pretty tame
Same!! i think i was a smart baby
I feel like I need to go soon
my brother stuck some tweezers in an outlet when he was a little child
Byeee in case u go it was lovely talking!
he has a masters degree now
You too :3
Omg i stuck a fork in an outlet when i was like 5 years old
it fit perfectly
Fair enough
Hehe
if only there was ground fault protection everywhere
Yea
it felt like it was calling for me
the 2 eyes and a mouth
outlet
so you gouged its eyes out
Imma go in like 5 minutes... getting hard to actually think rn and it feels so silent which is not normal for me
my brother still has the melted tweezers he shoved in the outlet
its ok to take rests and breaks! 🩷
i have trouble thinking if i dont eat
regaining Energy lets me think
This chat so much better than regular discussy tho so I'll stay till I must go
i'm liking the atmosphere of this chat
same
definitely more civil than discussy 1
I think I need to start taking afternoon adhd meds but then it will be so silent
other chats have like ai brainrot gifs
i wish my mind would be silent so i could read proofs in peace
WAIT WERE THE PEOPLE IN MY HEAD SIDE EFFECTS
🤷♀️
It hasn't happened since I had to go off them again
it's possible maybe
I need to get back on them then
i hope you enjoy it!
It may have been not so nice imagery but it grounded me :3
Omg that was such a long time ago
ADHD?
Yep but the meds tend to not last even on the long lasting
you know i feel like he still hasn't learned from that experience
oh. i wonder what ADHD meds might make me feel, i think i might have some ADHD
Maybe you could get a doctor to prescribe it, they tend to not be too bad from what I've heard
... why are messages appearing when I didn't see them before...
if i have ADHD it's at most mild
Same i still touch electronics like i have 9 lives
lmao please be careful
For sure when i move out
DONT TOUCH MICROWAVE
Ty im definitely over exaggerating
IT WILL KILL WITH TRANSFORMER
never become part of a high voltage circuit
i stay like 15 feet away from them when they're on cuz i dont wanna take risks
Yea! that's what a lot of electronics hobbyists mistakenly do.
take care
You guys too :3
do you mind if i send you a friend request? you're pretty cool!!
go ahead

w<
do you have any recommendations for analysis
like tips on what to do when im doing analysis that you think are good?
analysis proofs are like sort of a V shape in that you start from the beginning and then it may be helpful to work backwards
and then at the end reconstruct your steps sequentially
Omg unrelated but this video is really cool, i recommend it, it's about a mechanical calculator https://youtu.be/E0pJST5mL3A?si=uzpEU2HQuZkzKDOo
ooh this is exactly the kind of thing i'm interested in
oooo ty
it's really fascinating
yw
i think i might send this video to my brother too
tysmm
he's a mechanical engineer
he'd probably love it!
i'm sure
my brother got recommended this video coincidentally before i saw it, he also loved it
mechanical computing is very neat
Yessss it's fascinating how what's in our head can be translated into something physical and can count better than us
yeah
do you like geometry
i haven't done much geometry past high school level
but i would like to learn more
Ooo i'm learning HS geometry rn!
Same i wanna learn that
Yea!
there's a lot of things i want to learn i just wish i had infinite time to do it
Yessss
woahh chat's cooking
but someone in this chat earlier told me that i dont have to read everything but i can read like some of the stuff
Hiiiiiiiiii Speedy hru
like i also want to learn theory of computation and stuff like number theory and graph theory
Same!!
but i'm very caught up with complex analysis currently
i really enjoy math, all of it!
Thats ok!
some people even get into math again when they're really old like 70 years old, from some comments on calculus playlists i've seen on youtube
my dad's in his 50s and i sometimes talk to him about set theory and stuff
if they're not lying
Ooo sweet!
he did a computer science degree so he's got a little background

Hiii
Cool!!!!! my dad did a phd in philosophy, but he's forgotten algebra and we've talked about it together because i've been learning it
He used to excel in math in school and college, he did calculus
wow that's really cool
tyyyy
he learned calculus as a 40 year old
neat
hi
Yesss, math can always be learned!
how are you?
totally
tired
Same it's really dark outside, i should get some sleep
how's mathing
Really good how about yours!
it's good so far
i have really loved math since a young age, have you too?
Yayyy what are you taking
im learning geometry and proofs
i wish i could've enjoyed it more as a kid, i was fascinated by it but i just wasn't enjoying what i was doing at the time
Thats ok!! not everyone gets their passion for a certain subject at the same time
i kinda wanted to be doing the things my brother was since sometimes i'd watch him do his homework
i was a kid could you blame me
i was just curious
i used to look at MVC in Khan Academy as an 8 year old and wished i could understand the wikipedia pages but i never did :((( (yet)
Ooooo
ofc not!
he was fine with it
i used to wonder what multiplication/times was because my sisters used to take it in school
When I was 8 I played video games and exclusively ate chicken nuggets
yeah my brother taught me the power rule for derivatives when i was like 9
just prepping for exams. On the side I'm learning etale cohomology
i played roblox all day as an 8 year old
🙀 omg
Good luckkk have fun 🩷
that seems really interesting!
wouldn't say it's fun it's kinda annoying
Hopefully it will be over though
yeah it's really interesting
omg i looked at a pdf just now in relation to it and it has sheafs?
yeah sheaves are there
Cool!!
im going to sleep, i hope everyone has a good day/night!!
goodnight
good night!

Sheaf theory is
at your stage
nah it's fine I can invite aurora to one of the farms and explain what I mean by sheaf
LMAOOOOOOOO
I'm back sadly 3:
Welcome back
Ty
hi
helloooo
Deltoid bringing category of sheaves
Hello!
Whatever floats your boat, but don't ping random people.
,w sagacious
math is not competition. its computer science.
Wdym math is computer science
Why mathematicians consider Euler's equations pretty?
Peer pressure
Try here #info
thanks
Labubu
Does anybody using anki or any other srs system for math/unrelated? How do you use it? I would be interested in knowing, just collecting opinions and ideas.
Anki really doesn't work for maths, because maths is not a bunch of facts
maybe if you're learning circle theorems and you don't know what "chord", "tangent", "sector", and "inscribed angle" mean
but to learn maths, you really have to practice questions (and read worked examples / do simpler examples if the questions you have are too hard)
there's no way around this
@north topaz I did share the same view, then I read this today https://cognitivemedium.com/srs-mathematics
It comes from a quantum scientist with experience in both math and memory systems
that's an interesting perspective
i used it a bunch in undergrad
i consider it overrated
Very overrated
yea, e^(pi/2 * i) is a much better expression
in a sense it's one of the best ways we know of to actually formalise the notion of "angle"
which is surprisingly difficult if you haven't tried it before
by this i assume you mean $e^{i \theta} = \cos(\theta) + i \sin(\theta)$
Pseudo (Cat theory #1 Fan)
Isn't it the same if theta is substituted for π?
Yes
Nah, somehow i'm just curious where this identity came from and why so special about it
I only know this uses the Maclaurin series
But idk why he have to use the Maclaurin series and not just Taylor series?
Maclaurin series are just a special type of taylor series
@ocean harbor that user was trolling so they got muted
They were never genuine with their question
oh that makes sense
Reading through this article and I agree with a lot of his approaches to learning but the presence of flash cards specifically doesn't really seem to have anything to do with how he's actually learning
I'd argue that basically all of the learning he outlines in that article comes from actually making the flash cards and answering them for the first time rather than reviewing them
I do really agree with his general approach in the sense that really dissecting a theorem and picking apart why it works, where each assumption is necessary is helpful
and also asking more open-ended qualitative questions to yourself I think is something a lot of people should do more of
Ime this is mostly true
Though there have been cases where flashcards afforded me genuinely new insights
I think the main issue with flash cards is that it is dangerously easy to misuse them
and feel like you are learning more than you are

😬😬😬
I’ve never understood this issue
It’s only math people that have brought this up
As a teacher I would be happy if my students felt like they were learning
And you can test that with practice problems etc
Honestly this has always rubbed me the wrong way, it feels like an elitist “oh well you thought you learned something? actually you learned nothing and you should feel bad for trying”
the second part isn't really the implication, there's obviously nothing wrong with learning the basics and big picture
But the question was presumably asking about learning for a class, where you really want to know the material at a deeper level to be able to solve problems
I’ve used flashcards to achieve that goal too
and I said that if you use them properly then they can be helpful
my point was just that it's very easy to just write a bunch of definitions and theorems on flash cards, essentially use them for memorization and not really learn the skills you need to learn
?
Those are exactly the kinds of things flashcards are helpful for
Among other things
sure but memorization is not really what you need to know
In my experience, the more I memorized theorems and definitions, the more cognitive space I had available for actually thinking
Compare trying to read a foreign language book only with access to a dictionary
Having some amount of memorisation genuinely helps, and flashcards can help achieve that
Yeah totally in on that, as the article suggested, I am experimenting with the idea of understand proofs as a collection of open ended ideas. Memorisation is pointless except notation and terms sometimes
Mnm i see, thank you
isnt that just learning the language
Languages are actually an example that prove my point, since it's far far better to get practice speaking/using words in sentences/etc than it is to just memorize words
Yes, which requires some degree of memorisation
um actually speaking and writing shouldnt be a priorty
🤓
when leaerning a language
Yes but if you can’t retain the words and have to keep consulting a dictionary..
you obviously need to memorize the language to learn how to apply it tho
If you hear it a thousand times you wont forget it
That’s possible but also quite inefficient
in practice if you do a higher level of practice you will basically automatically memorize things without actively trying
Didn’t really happen for me unfortunately
its pretty effective lol
I never really actively memorize things in math unless they don't really come up in the course outside of when you first learn it
Good for you
and even then the way that I try to memorize is by making connections and doing higher level thinking rather than just like
rereading or something
or using flash cards
I think that's also important? If we try to write, we will know how it is written. If we learn to read it, we will understand the pronunciation. Wdymn by this?
if you do use flash cards, its much better to incorporate some amount of higher level reasoning (such as in the linked post) rather than just like "what is this theorem/whats the definition of this thing"
its better to hear the language first like of course whene leaarning a language you should write out the words
and have a dictionary to go through like anki
That is what I did
Yeah I agree
Okay, so hearing the pronunciation is a priority then?
my whole advice is just that if you are going to use flash cards, you have to be intentional about the questions because its possible for them to not be very good if not used corrected
compared to other study techniques where its harder to go wrong
well mostly
personally for memory I think free recall beats flash cards basically all the time
Like what
Maybe that works for your brain
free recall + review cycles, doing practice problems mainly
this is very well documented in learning research as far as I know
obviously you need to learn what the words mean and anki is basically like a flashcard thing thatll let you note down words and stuff
Flascards are good for the high level part, problems > flashcards definitely
you have to memorize a good bit to be able to apply to learning
I also read a book on learning research that talked extensively about active recall
That’s the sort of thing Anki implements
I'm learning Mandarin, and what I do is write the pinyin characters while reading them. Isn't that effective tho? But I remember it more easily like that, because the writing character is a bit complicated
Though in Euclidean Geometry for example it might be useful to keep some lemmas in mind
What’s a lemma?
im just saying it helps but not in excess and write only to what you can understand
,w lemma
Ty
The first one
like im saying learn what tou can and apply what you know
writing the characters helps but writing with no understanding of how they go together wont
Aah i see. I kind of wanna change my learning style tho
Nah, i wrote it when i already knew the meaning and try to connect the sentences
god damn embedd
but thats great then you are at the stage where you should be good lol
but mandarin is a very scary language to me lol, I miss pronounce things a lot and that language does not have any room for error lol
Yea it is, thats why. I can write but I can't pronounce it. A wrong tone means a wrong meaning. It's just that when I listen to Chinese people speak, their speech seems to have no tone lmao
yeah active recall is good but its important to take into account what the que is for recall, for instance a card that says "what is the definition of X" won't really be helpful if you need to identify situations where to use X without being prompted specifically to use X (of course, you could make a better flash card to account for this, but that's my entire point is just that you have to be careful to either mix up strategies or make sure that you actually have flash cards for the things you are trying to learn)
Yea, just look at them talking. The speed is like a train
itll take a lot of time lol
you just need to listen to a lot more media to get used to it
its kinda like how you cant understand radio chatter at first
In general its good to practice the specific skills you want to get better at, which isn't always accounted for with flash cards
but the more you listen to radio chatter the more you will adjust to it being able to understand it
Yea, i'll do it
Yes I agree with this
Mhm that’s why practice problems are important
also just a random thing because its on my mind here are some of the things I try to do to help remember definitions/theorems:
(1) identify a few key examples or counterexamples that illustrate which assumptions are necessary and why
(2) try and reformulate or summarize parts of the definition/theorem into a form that is perhaps less precise but also easier to remember (and that you can convert back into the precise form when needed)
(3) look at some results that depend on the specific definition/theorem, sometimes the result uses the definition/theorem in a way that makes it a lot easier to remember
(4) organize definitions into your own personal categories based on what makes the most sense to you, also come up with your own analogies
@vapid pier and @olive tendon it’s been nice knowing you!
nice knowing u too!!
thanks for the help koyuki
Yuh I learned too
I did nothing much. you don't have to thank me
How hard is abstract algebra compared to taking analysis? I am taking algebra next year
analysis is easier to start for me, though if anything I'm not qualified to compare them cuz I'm not done yet with either
you're probably better off asking an actual undergrad or above
Wait, you're not an undergrad?! But you're taking undergrad math's courses
do you know what calculus is?
Yeah
calculus teaches you the what and how.
analysis teaches you the why.
Can you give me some examples of what you learn in analysis
Because I took the course “analyse numérique pour l’ingénierie” but I’m not sure if it’s the same thing
Well, we learn about the formal definition of a functional limit, which is the delta Epsilon def
We also learn about sequences, continuity and a bit of topology in an analysis 1 class
Oh ok I don’t think I know any of that
That's numerical analysis which differs from real analysis
Well I did learn the definition of a limit in calculus
Continuity too
And uhhh what do you mean by sequences?
Like sums?
analyse
Analyse just means “analysis” for me haha
the ideas in basic RA are:
- real numbers and subsets; properties of the reals/subsets
- sequences and series
- basic topology (on R)
- limits and continuity
etc.
Which is to analyse something
exactly
Yeah but I’ve never heard of a course just named “analysis”
Oh, we learn about series in analysis 2 in my uni!
Yeah I saw some of those I think
In my course called “calcul différentiel” which I guess is calculus
Differential calculus
Or something like that
and that is because the topics of analysis closely resemble the topics of calculus, at least at the start
Maybe we didn’t see it in detail
The thing is, the definition of a limit you learnt in calculus is not rigorous. Analysis proves all the theorems you've seen in calc
Because it was only a part of the course
Do you know cohomologie galoisienne?
Naw
Ok
Whas that
is that French for some cohomology Galois theory or smth
Yeah I don’t think I learned that
a bunch of french words are similar to their english counterparts lol
hence why I'm asking
I’m taking my last “pure” math exam Wednesday
After that no more math courses in my life
(I think)
I will miss doing math
Let me guess, are you taking discrete maths?
It’s “mathématiques pour l’ingénierie 3” which is laplace, Fourier and some other type of differential equations
oh engineering math 3
I'm gonna be taking a half proof based ODE class next semester actually!
Ordinary differential equations?
It's called "mathematics finis" in French
discrete math is a bunch of topics superglued together
there's logic, set theory, combinatorics, even some automata theory, at least from the source I have
Actually learned what EDO (équations différentielles ordinaries) meant after doing the exam about it hahah
Ohhhh seems cool
I think there's also a good bit of graph theory in discrete
basically a hotpot of math topics
What are you studying?
I don't see discrete math as a field in itself
Applied maths, but we take a lot of abstract math's courses just like the pure math's students
Me2!
And you koyuki, are you planning to major in math's?
not sure. my primary interest is medicine
Engineering is cooler tho :3
Waow
however, failing that, I don't mind a degree in pure math
I've heard there's a Lotta math's in epidemiology
there's a lot of math everywhere in medicine
But koyuki you seem to be super smart I bet you’ll be successful
I'm really not.
Hahaha
Oh, can u give me examples about that?
I feel like med school itself doesn't give rigorous math's training, just an intro to stats class
I really have to study for my finals but this chat is so interesting :,)
Yeee, chemical kinetics requires a fair bit of math's
Sayme LOL
Sudden realization of doom I was supposed to start studying like 3 hours ago
pharmacy requires dosage calculations
radiology requires developing algorithms to reconstruct images from data
physiology and biomechanics require physics knowledge, which requires math in turn
genomics/molecular medicine require probability and combinatorics (and more)
etc.
Yay at least I’m not alone haha
Waow
Damn, that makes sense
Anyways good luck to you two in your studies!
Thx mate, likewise
Am kinda in a bad situation
Thanks :3
Anyone here who can help me with multivariable integration
I have a math exam tmr am I cooked
🐺 whats the topic and how many hrs till u sleep and after u wake up tmr is the test
Quadratic and the sin tan wtv it was
did u do all the homework?
Only rhe qraphs are hard
and if u havent already do a test exam
WHY WOULD I BE WORRYING ABT THR HOMEWORK RN
bc if u skipped any homework that might be a topic to start revision
Bro I did like one homework the whole term
ur probably fine, jst get ur hands on a past paper
I hate quadratic sm
assuming u have more than 6 hrs of prep time today, u can also ask chatgpt and gemini to make u a test based on ur homework and the topics and any information u know about the exam (e.g length)
once u know what ur weak in (it might not only be graphing speed) u then spend hopefullly 80%+ of ur time on those
I have more than 6 hrs but I don’t wanna study
I can’t study for more than 3 hrs max
ok its actually uber simple frfr, test papers arent even studying
Ikk
u only have to study if u dont know a topic
That’s the thing Idk abt quadratic
otherwise its practice.. i guess thats considered study, but like, it should be mindless
what portion of quadratic
I can do sin tna cos but not quadratic
if u know thats ur only weakpoint, do like 30 min of it now. 10 min vid/textbook, 20 min practice problems
look for ur specific topic on organic chemistry tutor he probs has a vid for it if its like highschool
No it’s not that
Yh cuz it’s the only topic I can’t do
u have any past homework on the graphs u can look at? or the chapter in ur textbook
that should be a great reference point for what to actually look at, and tbh dont spend too long, i wouldnt do more than like 3 hours anyways, u have to keep ur brain fresh
and lots of breaks
Yes that’s what I’m gna study from the past homework’s
Cuz I have the solutions f
based
i would still suggest maybe ask chatgpt or gemini to generate a like 30-60 minute exam for u that covers all the topics, maybe more intensive on the graphing
before u reach like the 2 hr mark so u can still have at least 15 min after that to review
Oki thanks
i cant say how amazing sitting practice paper are, even if its ai emulated
UR GONNA SMASH IT 🗣️ and if u do the heavy lifting now, u only have to do a light review tmr morning and your brain will be fresh and ready
🎉 goodluck
I HOPE ILYY
Gang how do you gaslight yourself into liking math? I fear it’s the passion I lack after years of burnout, so uh. Annnnny pointers, now that I’m in the highest course of high school math possible in my state…?
Squints in “is this a server of folks from all across the world, or can I specify Extension 2 NSW”
years of burnout
still in highschool
Squints what
Whhhhat are you trying to say?
I fear I gotta specify that high school is six years long in my country? Perchance? In case it’s a confusion with folks that have middle schools?
I really just dont think you can get burnout from highschool level stuff. If you're serious, then I really dont think the subject is for you.
Wow what a wonderful generalisation from someone who doesn’t know what my country’s education system is like, what other subjects I take, whether I’m employed, whether I take extracurriculars, whether I have mental disorders, or just anything about me :3
This is such a splendid server to join in hopes that I’d find folks that can get me to find imaginary numbers and complex planes interesting haha
Ignore this doofus
Already the plan lmao
Cookie just keep learning
I will
Goddamn dude get a life

I was talking abt u
Mm?
Wow, people get offended quick when given a reality check. If someone is trying to force a passion, maybe take a step back and ask if it's even healthy or not to continue it.
Lowkey betting this dude needs people to censor the word job
well if you're taking the "highest course of HS math" I wouldn't necessarily think you're forcing a passion, the talent is prob there but burnout makes it harder to find motivation
I'd try to get assessed for depression or a similar condition honestly, been there myself a few times
For context, you know, the thing people need before they start to make assumptions, I’ve always liked maths, but since I’ve taken on a high load of science subjects at school (I believe they’re the equivalent to US AP courses, but I could be wrong? (Aussie haha)) I’ve kinda been slipping a little and wanna bring back the spark is all
now, about liking math I've always found it interesting to go beyond the curriculum and just learn new things freely
but idk how applicable that is for high school math
Thanks, I’ll try, just got a bit of a bad GP is all
or which resources to recommend aside from like Khan Academy which isn't particularly deep
Yeah that’s the problem with it lmao
You can’t really go and explore without learning the “wrong thing”
What things are wrong? (Curious)
The things we aren’t being directly assessed on — it’s a slippery slope of falling down rabbit holes that won’t actually help you in any capacity in a test
Ahhhh
I know I have a tendency to kinda just tunnel into the entirely wrong place
At least with bio and stuff there’s a broader scope of stuff that’s considered “correct” since the exams are so writing heavy
Hello I find someone to work with me
where did you meat ?
why is this gc so quiet
Hi
Idk how aussie is but hs math in America leaves out lots of nuances so that’s very applicable here
I killed it 💅
xd
hiiii
helooo
Bro you made her leave
💀
US high school is easy (I've never been to the USA)
This is a fun post: https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/5113083/is-it-wrong-to-write-infinity-instead-of-undefined-in-a-trigonometry-table
I am a high-school math teacher
I was gonna say “that’s ai”? But the more i looked the worse it got
Usually the case with GenAI output
"almost" doing a lot of heavy lifting here
the actual words are not gibberish and all spelt correctly
and the font is very close to being consistent
i didnt catch any issues beside infty for the first 5 seconds so i guess id agree that it is "almost" good enough?
The biggest inconsistentsy is probably the fractions. Some are upright, some are slanted, and some are horizontal
sec "pi" (30 deg) is the worst
what I find strange is that ai is usually pretty good with trig and angles, it just fails to put it onto paper
i think it's an image gen model
The slop thickens......
i think theres a case to be made for reasoning language models tho
this paper may be of some utility here
https://arxiv.org/abs/2507.12469
This paper explores the computational complexity of diffusion-based language modeling. We prove a dichotomy based on the quality of the score-matching network in a diffusion model. In one direction, a network that exactly computes the score function of some initial distribution can only perform language modeling within the $\mathsf{TC}^0$ comple...
thats why we dont need trig in our lives
even ai deems it useless
has anyone else done rotations of shapes in similar ways to this for fun and getting intuition? i'm on Khan Academy, and it feels like you can get the same answer through multiple methods such as when rotating by 180 degrees you just change the sign of the coordinates or you could for example do this and draw some linear lines to form the angle of change between E and E prime
hi, sorry but is there anyone here using latex? i'm very new in latex and i wonder whether i can do something like in the below
\begin{enumerate}
\item Solution set of $x-7<2x-5$
\begin{align*}
x-7&<2x-5 \
-7+5&<2x-x\
-2&<x\
x&>-2\
\end{align*}
\therefore SS: (-2, \infty)
\item Solution set of $2x-4\leq6-7x\leq3x+6$
\end{enumerate}

Welcome to the server @upbeat jackal @visual compass
Hey
How are you
Wtf
Cos2π=-1 is crazy
Tanπ=inf is crazy
Thats two horrible mistakes in 1 line
Also 1/2 can be written as sqrt2 💔
Akιρɑ
thats something else
Read the note at the bottom
ok prove it
Did you read the note at the bottom
I know
The point is it’s riddled with mistakes
Do you guys exercise?
I usually forgor to but when walking to bus stop, does that count as exercise?
apple
that's baseline activity and not exercise
math yeah
poor cat
Good one 🤭
