I just can't do Gaussian Elimination with 4 or more variables

It all starts spinning around and I misplace numbers everywhere, make tons of sign mistakes and it's almost impossible for me to keep track of rows and columns, I switch them up. It's extremely frustrating because I take quite a bit of math-heavy courses- I have no trouble with none- but gaussian elimination beats me every time. Is there any way to keep track better? I am just completely devastated. I am at a point where I should have been able to do it for years, and I need to be able to do it for the job. I am very grateful for any advice I could get

maybe you can try not skipping steps (altering multiple rows at once) and hone in on only the two rows which you're working on?

also, use a calculator. I use it for basically everything, even simple single-digit arithmetic. Not because i don't know how to add, of course i do, but because it removes more mental burden --- all I do is press in one coefficient from one row, multiply it by some factor, add to the other row, and read the output from the calculator --- in addition to speeding things up.

Ive heard some ppl just do random row operations since sometimes it does work pretty well which im assuming ur doing?
Instead actually follow the algorithm use pivots etc

Also everytime you do pivots u shuld only do one step the rest can be done together i.e. when using Gaussian elim method the operation to make the column which has a leading one have zero everywhere else in that col you could do the row ops together

I might take up mathematics again at university though I do notice myself being disquieted by the very prospect. I know of too many mathematicians from personal anecdotes and public record that have lost contact so to say with consensus reality. I am, though this could very well be a paranoid fantasy, setting aside the applied aspect convinced that the purely analytical nature of the subject's core, which one has to master, is in great part to blame for this phenomenon of mathematicians losing touch. Notwithstanding the immense pressure of pursuing varsity mathematics. Is this a valid concern? I would greatly appreciate any serious answer.
