Reading a math book should take considerably longer than reading other kinds of books

You can read a 200 page fiction text in a day and have a solid recollection of details and themes. You will not do this with a math book. (Unless perhaps if you have seen all of the material already)

I would be careful before choosing BME. It's a research-intensive field, one of the few engineering fields that often requires a MS/PhD for most industry jobs, and tends to pigenhole people. Vast majority of what can be done in a BME degree can be done with a ME (prosthetics/tissue eng), ChemE (tissues) or EE/CE (devices) degree, and they're way broader. You should be 100% certain before going into BME: it has its upsides, but you need to be aware of the tradeoffs.
