Most this summer ive been going through a DSA textbook

And its not too difficult but it feels daunting

I think the best thing is to have a certain amount of prep that opens as many doors as possible

I went back to school as an excuse to do more math and potentially get higher paying job

and as long as im not working over 60hrs a week I think im fine

last job had me doing 50-70 hour workweeks

I can always negotiate location, whatever gives more pay pretty much

The choice to take challenges/progress is really important though

Going overseas I think is a bit tricky if you want high enough pay since I think for some of these industries America pay tends to be a fair bit higher than elsewhere

In data science it may look a bit more like, okay hmm you have to look at the data, think about the nature of it, think about what types of ML methods are better. Since there are many things floating around, like linear regression, time series, random forests, neural networks, etc etc. And I think a non-trivial portion of the job is making these kinds of decisions (also the other stuff like scraping to get the data, any cleaning/preprocessing, testing performance, etc)

If you're a raw software engineer, you'll be doing fairly different things I figure. Tbh I can't speak much of what the day to day will probably look like there, might depend on the role and company (maybe if you're more senior you care about architecture and systems, if you're more junior maybe you're just coding smaller scale things) + I'm just less familiar

I've largely thrown in the towel on that. Tbh I've been burned out on research for a long time, and while I have spurts of motivation as far as research goes they're few and far in between. I think I just need more structure to perform well

Like first off, given the state of the job market and my fairly limited research progress, I strongly doubt I'd get a good enough postdoc to justify this path, since it is rather grueling

And even if I did get a very good one... I do think the workflow of research doesn't click with me as well

As for what within industry... The mathy side of tech feels like the dream, like maybe IBM research, but idk if there's a clear path for me to do that. I think you need more tailored background

Cryptography might be worth looking at? (NSA and adjacent are the obvious contenders there and... I'm happier with that than doing stuff in defense that's much closer to killing people for sure, but still have a bit of hesitation)

Hours in finance are brutal but the pay is nice and it might be pretty interesting.

Doing AI/ML would require some focused prep but if I lock in and the jobs are there that might be nice, probably still interesting + good pay, maybe better WLB than finance

Data science feels like the standard choice and prob somewhat easier to do, maybe pays less and is less interesting but still not bad by any means. Job market saturation means I don't wanna fully rely on this though

Software engineering raw doesn't feel like my style somehow

welp managing the code is trivial honestly, I find it hard to believe anybody would find it difficult as it's dumb simple. But the performance can suffer, depends on how you do it. A lot of people just think it has bad performance because they don't understand how it works.

if you manage client-side caching and you debounce UI events which alter state high up in the vdom it's great. and it's good to appreciate as well that a lot of the bulk of CPU work goes into rendering, and with react's approach to reconciliation, often all it does is run a couple of components but won't trigger any actual changes to the DOM.

I have been building a very complex app with it and the only performance concerns we had with it were all around network optimization.

e.g. React wasn't blocking interactions, the network was.
