I do agree that tools help us, we realized that instead of memorizing everything at our limited capacity we could just, and especially for seasonal changes like new classes every semester, use other forms of memory such as a to-do list on a piece of paper or the memory of a computer as 'our second brain'

but then there's the argument that it can make us lazy if used all the time, and becoming dependent on these tools would not enhance our cognitive processes in the long-term

this might be an ignorant perspective since I don’t know much about the topic, but it feels strange to say that something I use a lot, like google calendar, is part of my mind simply because I use it to store things I don’t want to remember myself. Google Calendar wasn’t there when I was born, so does this mean our minds are constantly 'expanding' or becoming extended as new tools are developed? And I’m asking this not from a biological standpoint, cuz i dont even know how you would define that, but from a psychological and philosophical perspective

i think for me, the difference i notice is that i often forget the sites etc that i wanna go to when i go to type in the url, and bookmarks prevent that from happening. i feel more functional with the support of the bookmarks. likewise, i wouldnt say gcal as a note system differs much from any other digital second brain system, except that i notice super helpful and clear recollection when i ask, "when did i do that thing? what did i use for that?" which'd be info i'd find too vague to retrieve without a tool to support the recollection. moreover, i feel like there are details i can get from my notes in the gcal setting i'd likely completely lose trying to recall without any note system, so augmenting my retrieval feels like extending my mind's capabilities there, which empowers my thinking and beliefs about possibilities, so ig extends my mind?

ig the convo partly depends on how you define your mind. if it's the collection of cognitive processes you choose amidst all that arise in your brain, esp bc i suppose those'd align with your values, then forming new cognitive processes that use technology within them seems like changing your mind. likewise, e.g. the feeling of your creativity strengthening from reading interesting material like papers or books etc might extend your mind's potential, and if tools like gcal help you find ways to manifest that potential better or come up with new ideas you wouldntve because you were limited by your retrieval before, then how would a gcal note system differ from extending someone's mind?

lazy sounds interesting to me. i understand laziness can be broken down into a lot of smaller, tangible things. while tools may atrophe existing cognitive processes as restricted by their dependencies under like, use it or lose it, i feel like tools may enhance processes for a specific purpose by shortening them, adding more quality, and replacing the thinking required to achieve the old purpose outright! how would replacement for a specific purpose here differ from enhancement when there's reason to believe the dependencies will stick around and the process doesnt make you any less sharp?

like i wouldnt say chatgpt extends someone's mind, bc that doesnt really enrich a thought process. it'd kinda fosters something closer to codependency here to me, which i hesitate to call empowerment.

For example the equation that vero posted is an example of these sort of problems. It turns out if you expand the definition of the integers and look at Z[sqrt(2)] then you will get the answer for the question

The equation x^2-2 y^2 can be rewritten as (x- y sqrt(2))(x+ y sqrt(2)) which is precisely the norm

So now you are asking what x gives you norm 1, well these are the units and a further exploration shows that you get infinitely many of these numbers with norm 1

-Early Decision (ED): You apply early and get a decision early, but if you are accepted to have to go.
-Early Action (EA): You apply early and get a decision early. Not required to go.
-Regular Decision (RD): Usual type of application: Late December or Early January usually.
-Early Decision II (ED2): Not necessarily earlier, but if you are accepted, you have to go.
-Restricted Early Action (REA): Like early action, but there are limits on the number of schools you can apply to before receiving your decision.
-Rolling Decision (RD): You can apply whenever, and your application is put in a large glass cylinder which is rolled before some number of applications are picked out.
-Very Early Action (VEA): You can apply whenever in middle school, and get your decision a few weeks later. Not required to go.
-Ultra Early Decision (UED): If you are accepted, you have to immediately go to the university and cease all communication with nonmembers until you graduate.
-Bribery ($): A deposit is made to university application officials for a better chance of being accepted. Not required to go.
-Speedy Regular Decision (SRD): Like regular decision, but if you are accepted, you get a phone call and have to immediately decide to go the university or not.
-Early Decision III (ED3): Self-descriptive. See Early Decision II.
-Teachers Decision (TD): Some teachers (typically 3-7) from your high school vote whether you are worthy of going to the university or not. Not required to go.
