As a teacher I hate the Rule of Sarrus because students keep trying to apply it to 4x4 and larger matrices ||including non-square matrices||
Yeah it's supposed to only be applied for 3x3
I mean, it's often a very useful way to calculate determinants, but it's very risky to teach it to irresponsible people
Also this really doesn't take that long unless the matrix is particularly gnarly
I always get gnarly ones, i wish i was good at arithmetic :/.
Plus when they have lots of negatives in them, it makes it a bit difficult since you have to keep in check for them

Inverting a 4x4 matrix is computationally difficult, assuming that the inverse actually exists
and even then confirming the existence of an inverse can be annoying depending on choice of method (computing the determinant of a 4x4)
though there are much easier ways to check
such as showing that ker(T) = 0, that the columns are linearly independent, etc...

I don't know about those in particular but the Wikipedia articles about mathematics tend to be reasonably solid as a starting point (but it's definitely recommended to get an actual book, some of which will usually be listed in the references)

it is just a way to view two different things, order and disorder, and appreciate the progression from one to the other.

Besides learning the material, there are no tricks to any particular exam.
Oh and one last thing. Make sure you visit the restroom before the exam.
