although i wonder who here knows about the Rule of Sarrus for finding the determinant of a 3x3 matrix. It was how i was taught :p

old oak
willow crystal
old oak
#

I mean, it's often a very useful way to calculate determinants, but it's very risky to teach it to irresponsible people

#

Also this really doesn't take that long unless the matrix is particularly gnarly

willow crystal
#

Plus when they have lots of negatives in them, it makes it a bit difficult since you have to keep in check for them

old oak
#

Sounds like you're finding the inverse using cofactors?

#

For 4x4 and larger matrices my first choice would be Gaussian elimination

willow crystal
old oak
#

I've never liked enforcing a particular method of solving a problem on my students

#

I mean, I do that during classes so that they get familiar with all the methods

#

But never on homeworks/exams/etc

#

On the other hand I do like setting problems where one method is patently better than another

willow crystal
#

True. I do like linear algbrea a lot anyways. I find it intresting (i did learn some of it during my a level further maths as well) how you can apply it to computer science which is what i'm doing for my degree alongside with maths

old oak
#

Yep, machine learning for instance has a lot of linear algebra

willow crystal
old oak
#

Sadly no, I only teach it in the form of UG courses so all I have is our uni's official course notes in my native language.

I'll let you have a wild guess as to how the students I mentioned approach it.

north topaz
#

you're not offended right

old oak
#

Nope, no worries

stone ferry
#

I remember when we defined determinant in my (second) linalg class, we mentioned the permutation method

#

followed quickly by "please don't use this on a test, it's gonna suck"

old oak
#

Yep

#

I think it's sometimes useful as a theoretical tool, to spot something etc.

#

Like why the determinant you use to find eigenvalues will be a polynomial of degree at most n

#

But I can't think of a scenario where it would be useful for actually calculating a determinant

#

Speaking of detemrinant calculation methods, there's also this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodgson_condensation

In mathematics, Dodgson condensation or method of contractants is a method of computing the determinants of square matrices. It is named for its inventor, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known by his pseudonym, as Lewis Carroll, the popular author), who discovered it in 1866. The method in the case of an n × n matrix is to construct an (n − ...

#

Invented by the author of Alice in Wonderland

stone ferry
#

Yeah I remember that being mentioned in the same linalg class

#

Apparently he got a letter from the queen after writing Alice in wonderland, asking "if you write any more books, please send me a copy"

#

You'll never guess what he sent in response

All that survival of the fittest means is that those things which have some mechanism to perpetuate themselves tend to perpetuate themselves

#

That's all evolution, and life as a whole, is.

#

They are aimless, it's just that the things that happen to randomly develop ways to last longer, tend to last longer.

#

We just consider things that perpetuate themselves successful, but there's nothing behind that beyond our own intuition.

old oak
#

yep, it's not like those birds suddenly chose to develop different-shaped beaks

#

it's just that those which randomly did, fared better, had more offspring, so the trait persisted

knotty kettle

Let's ping the mods

grave badge
#

sure

#

lets actually do it

#

she mustve wasted a lot of helpers' time

knotty kettle
#

Then wait for it to happen again and catch her together with the mods!

grave badge
#

cuz like the other person who was helping her, she interrupted him mid convo and said shes leaving the server then closed the channel

#

like wtf

knotty kettle
#

Huh

#

That's not a nice person to work with

grave badge

shes still in the server btw

#

yeah

knotty kettle

So

she might be trolling tho

knotty kettle

Then ping mods

#

And catch her

willow crystal

her name is "lalnashef"

willow crystal

I just checked the help-4 channel, and nobody even insulted her :/

grave badge
# willow crystal Did it came out of nowhere?

im not sure but like 2 people were already helping her (which stop responding unsurprisingly after know how she is) so i came in and helped her, it was about inverse functions and i just told her its about making x the subject and then switching it with y and she had difficulties doing that do i told her some of the steps and mentioned that its a 6th grade thing just for the sake of making it sound more easier and then she started losing her shit telling me that not everyone is good at math and saying that ive insulted her :/

#

about the 6th grade its not about the inverse functions itself

#

its cuz u have to make x the subject so u have to reverse the operations

#

which is somethign people usually learn in 6 grade

willow crystal
knotty kettle

like i even apologized even tho i did nothing wrong but she still kept going on

knotty kettle
#

Alright

#

Let's do screenshot anyway

grave badge
#

and i offered to help her again all the way from the start so she could understand everything but she rejected like then whats the point of opening a help channel

knotty kettle

Step 1: catch her being rudr
Step 2: screenshot (optional)
Step 3: ping mods

Let's do it

Yep apparently. It states (it's from algebraic topology, i don't know anything about it lol) you can't flatten all the hairs on a sphere without a single one of them not standing. (Again it's an awfully simplified expression of what the theorem states).

Although I think there's a related result that there is no smooth vector field on the 2-dimensional sphere

unborn trellis
#

so it's the same kind of problem. classifying intermediate normal extensions of a field is finding normal subgroups of Gal(F'/F), finding intermediate normal covers of X is finding normal subgroups of Aut(X'/X) = Deck(X') = pi_1(X)/pi_1(X') if X' is normal

#

then when you learn about riemann surfaces, these are actually the same thing

icy heron
#

wait, is it Galois theory just because its a Galois connection? thonk That doesn't make any sense... there has to be fields involved

ppl have 10 bishops, 1 king, 1 queen, 10 rooks, 10 knights, in an 8x2x2x1x1x1x1x1x1x1 placement, with 256 pawns
queen and king are placed at the center of a edge, the bishops are places so that the coordinate sum of each bishop ends in a different digit, the rooks and knights are places arbitraily, the two edges are chosen to be maximally distant, they board is colored with 10 colors, each bishop must move move an equal number of spaces in each axis per move, each knight moves 2 in one direction and 1 in an other direction, the king can move upto one space in each direction, the queen can move so that the direction moved in each axis is either 0 or equal to each other, the pawn moves one space ni one axis, and must move away from the original edge (unless on the first move, in which it can move 2 moves), or unless it is capturing, in which it can move upto one unit in any direction as long as it goes away from the origin edge, en passant allowed, promotion happens when it reaches the opposite edge

You can think of Existentialism as finding your own meaning (although that's an awfully simplified definition of it). Albert Camus was a French philosopher and author who is mainly famous for writing The Stranger and Absurdism

I was in a similar spot when I was back in HS
Later I got diagnosed with clinical depression lmao but still
I've always personally found that like relying too much on "mainstream" philosophical angles will just make you feel even worse
In my experience at least it's always been a thing of like "this is supposed to make me feel better but it's not really helping"
It's important to develop your own lore in a sense, to not rely on those that came before for too much other than inspiration for what to look at in life instead of just reading that stuff and sorta accepting it as fact lmao

willow crystal
inner canopy
#

everybody should just waste their life trying to understand hegel lmao

#

learn the category theoretic viewpoint on hegel

visual topaz
#

There's nothing wrong with mainstream philosophy, you'd still need them if you want to communicate your philosophy to anyone
I also don't think one should treat philosophy as self-help. It's not designed for self-help, it's for you to better understand your own beliefs, thinking, and overall a good way to see what is sound and what isn't

#

It's important to develop your own lore in a sense
^ I'd say this key line is what is philosophy. It's not the abstraction or 'justified true belief' nonsense. Philosphy is finding your own answer

inner canopy
visual topaz
#

that's funny because I think undergrads who are forced to read any stupid theory hardly believe in them, which is the expected response

I mean for example if religion works for you, there's nothing wrong with it as long as you don't force it upon others

barren anchor
#

let me school you both really quick: please read the birth of tragedy

#

nietzche is extremely poorly understood. Nihilism is in fact a rejoicing in the fact that the narrative dynamic of life exists between the apollinian arrangements and the dyionisian as an ongoing counterplay

#

he uses schopenhauer's end of individuation directly as an analogue for passage into the dyonisian

#

it's not even been about "mattering".

#

it's not a response to nothing mattering.

#

it is just a way to view two different things, order and disorder, and appreciate the progression from one to the other.

#

and of course to appreciate disorder for itself

visual topaz
#

i disagree

barren anchor
barren anchor
#

or you perhaps skipped the birth of tragedy, which would be an absurd study plan, because his other works are mostly trash

barren anchor
visual topaz
barren anchor
#

if you want to somehow argue about it's content now, I find that bizarre

neat lintel
#

oh an actual convo

barren anchor
#

watch out!

neat lintel
#

where would u suggest one starts philosophy ?

barren anchor
#

the birth of tragedy was my first book, my dad got it for my 14th birthday. I loved it.

neat lintel
#

should i just look up some undergrads syllabus ?

barren anchor
#

it's absolutely beautifully written

#

that is not a bad way to do it.

#

if you have particular interests, you can go there. There's a huge difference in difficulty though

#

I wouldn't recommend Hegel's phenomenology or a discourse on the method to anyone new

neat lintel
#

wouldnt the work of someone like neitzche be far more complex to comprehend for someone nee to philosophy tho

barren anchor
#

a lot of people start with lightweights like Kant and they use excerpts, rather than somethign like a critique of pure reason

neat lintel
barren anchor
#

it's extremely easy to understand. There's some relevant background about dionysus and apollo as they stood relative to the arts and sciences in ancient greece

#

but he explains what you need to know

visual topaz
#

Kant is a good start

#

So is Plato

neat lintel
barren anchor
#

I wouldn't read the republic, either

#

use excerpts

visual topaz
#

Wouldn't recommend any of the 15+ century until you have an idea how of it's written

barren anchor
neat lintel
visual topaz
#

I would recommend reading the republic actually

barren anchor
#

p.s. I have read a shitload of epistomology, more than any other genre of literature by far

barren anchor
#

I don't know what that means and I don't agree.

#

you can pick up a discourse on the method and understand it immediately

#

I would say the 1600's is the richest century maybe ever for philosophy

#

you don't need any precursors to understand it.

#

it's philosophy, e.g. reason. Most solid works provide what they take a-priori and proceed from their.

visual topaz
#

15+ century is probably wrong

#

maybe 18+ century

neat lintel
#

so is there like a progression in complexity in philosophy or anything...? like uk as u said, building upon itself and previous works over time ? just wondering abt that

visual topaz
#

let me check my timelines

barren anchor
#

as well as work through their assumptions etc

visual topaz
#

Yeah >18 or 19+ century is basically modern shit, it's not what I recommend. Starting from Renaissance/Greeks is common

visual topaz
barren anchor
#

I don't think so either

neat lintel
barren anchor
#

I would go up to like 1850 maybe

visual topaz
barren anchor
#

like, I wouldn't even consider somethign written after that if I were just getting a basis because the earlier works really did just cover a shitload of ground

barren anchor
neat lintel
visual topaz
neat lintel
#

yeah that

barren anchor
#

like if you want to survey philosophy or get a handle on a lot of big ideas, the older works are more dense with those

#

less about extending or dealing with contradictions or resolving particulars

neat lintel
#

hm

#

oh well, my eyes are failing me now ig

#

cya

barren anchor
#

lol later

#

p.s. whatever you do, don't get into popular philosophy. There are a shitload of people who just rip off old philosophies and repackage them, like "Oprah's stoicism" or "Ninja's phenomenology"

barren anchor
#

yeah some of it masquarades as self-help or self-improvement shit

it is annoying. Like you wanna understand things? decompose them to simple ideas. Like, ok.

Since i'm pretty sure during that time, Nihilism was a big movement in Germany

When it was quite religious before

visual topaz

It's not that the influence of religion is dead, but that it's difficult to believe in the christian God

#

And with that, a lot of morality

willow crystal
visual topaz
#

Not sure about the moral foundation part (don't really get the ubermensch stuff), but yes I think the idea is to react to this social change. Hence I keep saying it's a response

#

There's almost no greater nihilism than the death of belief in western culture

#

And that's what Nietzsche (is thought to) was writing about

willow crystal

Also athiesm as well
