Anyone with access to sciencedirect through their university can help me accessing 2 papers? My uni does not grant access to its students 😦

These are 2024 papers and I don't think I can find it elsewhere

General advice is to email the authors of the papers to see if they can give you a copy.

it's more like particularly bad advice

I envy the brain that thought it though just so creative and pure

south arch
#

not if ur desperate and ask nicely

#

the worst they do is ignore you

barren anchor
#

no I'm saying it's literally just not general advice

#

like you can go survey 50 people who regularly access academic literature and 49 of them will not say email the author

south arch
#

oh lmao

barren anchor
#

not saying it's impossible or anything

south arch
#

yeah most people who read research have access to said research

#

thats kinda wack that a uni doesnt have that

#

especially something like sciencedirect

solid snow
#

why is emailing authors bad?

barren anchor
#

man I'm not saying it's bad either

#

I'm saying it's weird advice

south arch
#

disproved with FACTS and LOGIC

solid snow
#

oh i see what you mean

#

bad advice as in unlikely to result in anything

barren anchor
#

like if it takes you 5 minutes to text friend/ family get them to print you something they access through their institution

#

vs emailing some postdoc somewhere who might get back to you at some point

#

seems like why would you take route 2?

#

yea

#

it's just not optimally effective imo

south arch
#

thats assuming you have friends or family with access

barren anchor
#

that it is. But who doesn't?

south arch
#

me 😔

#

im jk but id say its also rare to have family with access bc that means they are in academia

barren anchor
#

is that rare?

south arch
#

i mean, yes

barren anchor
#

particularly when you are in academia

#

granted it is a requirement

#

so I hear you, other options may be necessitated even with their suboptimality

south arch
#

its easy to feel that way bc you surround yourself with people in academia through your interests, field, and education

#

but id say the average person would have trouble finding someone they know with a phd or even a grad student

#

or even a stem major for that matter

barren anchor
#

bro most undergrads at decent universities get a shitload of access

#

doesn't matter what major they have, most universities don't gate their access by your major. You are a student of any kind, you get access.

#

much like an art student might go to the library and borrow* an engineering book

south arch
#

its also not unheard of that you only have friends at your university - but i digress its not a big deal lol

ember lance
barren anchor
#

yeah I mean relatively bad

#

there's nothing outright bad about trying any approach if any approach will do

#

but it a particularly ineffective way to go about it

barren anchor
#

it is dumb bad advice

#

but it's not like impossible

#

I'm pretty loose with my language these days pray for me

ember lance
#

I mean it is implied that since they don't have access to the service, that people surrounding them won't have access to it either. So one has multiple options here, one can ask random internet strangers ( which might or might not work since accessing some papers comes with a tag that could get you banned if the media gets redistributed, so strangers might be more hesitant to do it ) or you can email the author which would benefit from their results being cited, and could establish a future contact point.

#

and sometimes they even send you more relevant literature and could send a corrected version.

#

So no, I don't think it is dumb bad advice

I have a meeting tomorrow with my professor regarding a seminar talk that i have to do on friday. Problem is, i have no clue whats going on, i dont really understand the material and i have not prepared particularly much. Im basically tasked to write some sagemath stuff. I had another seminar talk last friday, on which i focused on, so i only started working on this talk a few days ago. Should I just not go to the seminar, take an F and call it a day, which is of course kind of shitty (however I can just do a different seminar next semester, so the F doesnt really matter), or should I meet him tomorrow and have a humiliating experience

#

To be honest i could have started earlier, but i was lazy over the christmas holidays. Also this seminar is aimed at people that attend the professors lecture, i dont attend it though, i just signed up for the seminar for fun, which now seems like a kinda bad idea

think about it like this: you could give up now and promise yourself that you will be different in the future, but generally, people are creatures of habit and stick to what they normally do, and giving up now would be adhering to your old habits

if you dont give up and try your best to admit your fault and work at it, you're one step closer to changing your lazy habits

#

i will note that if i was a professor in that situation theres really not much you can do tho, just dont let this happen again

ember lance
#

As silver mentioned previously, before going to the meeting, somehow try to learn the broad aspects of the topic you need to present, and during the meeting maybe you can manage to fill in some holes in your presentation with whatever your professor says.

Thanks a lot for the advice you gave me about the project; it was really helpful. I will not write more, because I am not a creep.

cinder glacier
solid snow
#

every vector in R^3 emanates from the origin technically

old oak
#

You could also say that technically vectors in R^3 don't emanate from anything because they're triples of real numbers, which we just interpret/conceptualize as vector arrows

#

(which are typically indeed conceptualized as originating at (0,0,0) )

cinder glacier
#

So in the case of 3 vectors that touch a plane

#

It would instantly mean that the differnece lies on the plane

#

You see I had trouble with this cause if I don't have the same origin I disagree that it's true

#

And didn't understand why they had to be starting from the same origin

#

It bothers me that the norm and direction of the vector can be then defined by a singular point

cinder glacier
solid snow
#

hence it makes no difference to decide that it emanates from the origin for convenience

cinder glacier
#

And I don't see why this should be the case since it feels like a convention, and since it's a convention it should be stipulated at the beginning

Like u need to say that, it's not for me to assume

The question was about the angle between 2 planes, with every plane having 3 vectors that have a vertex on the plane

So it's finding 2 orthogonal vectors on the planes doing the vectorial product to find the normal to the plane and then dor product between each normal.

y = mx + b
lets start with some simple cases if m and b are rational then there will be rational solutions
if m is rational but b is irrational then there will be no rational solutions because y - mx will be rational when x and y are rational but this is meant to = b which irrational
if m is irrational but b is rational then also we will get no solutions because y - b will be rational but mx will be irrational
so the questions boils down to if y = mx + b has rational solutions when m and b are irrational
@drifting lark

#

we have already found examples where it is possible like y = pi x + pi has a rational solution of (-1, 0)
but must there always be a rational solution

#

something tells me that is not a simple question

#

when b/m is rational, i.e. b = m r for some rational r we can write y = m(x + r) and we will find a rational point (-r, 0) this is the trick we just used in the case m = pi

My intuition says we could use Cantor's diagonalization method to prove that, for a given m, there must be some b such that the equation has no rational solutions.

The math you learn in high school. People, student, math teachers think it’s math. But it is not. It is a boring curriculum, a punishment for students who must learn very menial, repetitive tasks, solving time and over the same kind of routine problems. No mathematician ever computes an integral anymore, not even a difficult one: they use tools like WolframAlpha. Plus, while math is mostly a creative discipline, school math is the perfect opposite of creativity. Sadly, people think they had to learn and learn to hate math at school, but actually it was no math that they learned: it is more more akin to memorizing a phone book. No surprise math has a bad reputation, but actually, that bad reputation is not against math, but against what people wrongly believe is math. And of course, that bad reputation is well deserved when viewed under this perspective.

this is a common feeling among people who one way or another managed to get really good at math. Most of those people haven't experienced really struggling to work out something like 4/5 - 2/3, or solving 3(2x + 4) = x, but I can tell you a LOT of people REALLY struggle with these things. How would these people do in a curriculum designed to teach creative research math? They wouldn't stand a chance. The curriculum is designed to get most people to a basic level of competency and it's pretty miserable at doing that. Improving this situation is a very difficult problem

I personally think we should have more divided school paths, where most people should go down paths with much, much less math required for them. Making everybody learn how to factor and solve specially chosen cubics is patently absurd to me.

#

Make basic arithmetic required, and a little bit of algebra and geometry - and I really mean a little. That's enough for most people. People who realize early on they like math should have the option for a path that gets into the creative research stuff quickly

This is only as powerful as you’d like if the cat is cartesian closed. In a cartesian cat this can only apply a function n times. It can’t do primitive recursion.

To do that we need to define a so called parametrized natural numbers object instead.

Because if you create the answer of life you would have to know the answer to life

I don't think there is anyone we can attribute as "the creator of 42"

I will confirm what you say from personal experience. In my case, I can testify that what I see is not mere suffering, but an expression of love that perhaps, forgive my presumption, you are not yet accustomed to. In addition to others I know who, like any other "sin", are welcomed and fight their deviations aiming for a greater love, because that is what they believe in and it is not something that is imposed. I am not denying that there are other cases in which there are impositions, especially family ones, but I also cannot ignore so many particular cases that inspire me and that clearly highlight the effects of the so-called "sexual revolution" on people's minds.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.

I mean, science has proven to us that mental disorders are biological consequences. As a good naturalist (in the literary sense) that I am, I believe that the actions of a psychopath, for example, whether manipulating (to reduce their possible response regarding disproportion) or killing, have no connection to moral action, since this would be just an object of behavioral analysis that acts only in a fictitious space; reality is only limited to forces, scalars and material things. The blame cannot be placed on someone who was moved only by nature; the beauty of biology would be this imperfection (which exists only for us).

# old oak > When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of ...

This has nothing to do with my message, but let's go to some context that you left out:
Exodus 21:2-8
[2]When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years; in the seventh year he shall go out free without paying anything.
[3]If he went in alone, he shall go out alone; if he has a wife, his wife shall go with him.
[4]But if his master gave him a wife, and she bore him sons and daughters, the woman and her children shall be her master's property, and he shall go out alone.
[5]But if the slave says, 'I love my master, my wife and my children; I do not want to be set free,'
[6]then his master shall bring him before God and make him stand near the doorpost or the post, and pierce his ear with an awl; and the slave shall be his servant forever.
[7]If a man has sold his daughter to be a slave, she shall not go out free on the same terms as the slave. [8]If she displeases her master who had destined her for himself, he shall redeem her; but he may not sell her to a foreigner after she has been unfaithful to him.

unborn meteor

peak tide
#

why weren't foreigners allowed to buy the unfaithful girl slaves? was it a national security thing?

autumn lintel
# mighty pilot From what premisse and logical thinking did you arrive at this ?

The premise that the guilt we are considering, and I have not seen anyone escaping the most common of systems when it comes to the subject, which is the Aristotelian system, is an immaterial part of the set of relations of the psyche, like a function whose independent variable is its responsibility, but this is contained in a higher reality (possible universe that moves those moved). So, by your message that affirms a certain "refutation" from the scientific proof blah blah blah that this is a psychological problem, I just assumed that you are, therefore, affirming that there is no truth that encompasses, in itself, the morality that responds to the natural purpose. Therefore, I conclude that everything that exists is only matter and act, but does not depend on a first cause that sustains it and reflects in itself the purposes of its "caused". Basically, if we cannot attribute blame to those who practice sexual disorders, including the scientifically proven biological homosexuality, we also cannot attribute blame to those who practice the famous "evil", as this also has no dependence on natural reality, it would just be the name given to a pattern that SHOULD occur.

our server's icon is like the subtlest LGBT colors ever in existence I don't get why people complain about it unless it's their own ideological bias against it

#

it looks cool and if anything it's fair to subtly signal we're a safe space for diverse folks

Just as we’re very clear about this being a safe space for LGBT people

terse fiber
#

Well I guess, but why specifally for LGBT, why not let's say asians, blacks, jewish people, polish people, russians e.c.t

#

Do they need more safe places than those groups of people?

#

I'm guessing it is more popular to hate lgbtq+ person than black person

mint canopy
#

This isn’t a ranking game

#

We can have safe spaces for all those groups.

#

Why are you presenting it as if we have to decide which group to favour?

Support isn’t mutually exclusive

This is a safe space for everyone other than bigots

I think what makes LGBTQ+ as a group stand out in this case is that they're more or less uniformly present across the entire world

#

and have collectively decided to identify using various symbolisms e.g. the pride flag

We’re all here because we love maths, and anyone can love maths and should be given a space where they can enjoy that in peace

hundreds of years ago, how did we make maps with any accuracy?
I think the simple answer is "we didn't, they sucked"
but idk
how would you figure out where the equator is
like you would've heard tales about how other places have different weather, and tales about how if you sail far enough south, it's the opposite season of the year

Maps have been one of the most important human inventions for millennia, allowing humans to explain and navigate their way through the world.
When and how the earliest maps were made is unclear, but maps of local terrain are believed to have been independently invented by many cultures. The earliest surviving maps include cave paintings and etch...

we had to develop very sophisticated navigation techniques for the sake of making long-distance sea voyages without getting hopelessly lost

you can get pretty accurate maps by very carefully mapping coastlines with a huge amount of effort and time

the table is supposed to classify different types of conflicts when someone doesn't want to do some X which is good for them

#

the idea came to me cause i was thinking about school and the fact that different students might not want to do the same thing, but they "don't want to do it" in different ways

brazen mulch

internalized transphobia sounds like the rare case; I'd defer to teaching why X is good
