also, you realise that you're living in what many adults consider the "good old days" right
where you can goof around without a care in the world
Remember to always touch the belly
bro ive touched its belly and it doesnt care anymore 😭
Are you a god of cat???
My cat won't even let a single touch in its belly
That cat is high
idk i dont think so bc i havent seen any cats in my neighborhood
i see squirrels tho
they usually pause and look at me
before they run away when i walk closer
its funny
I wonder if we can get a squirrel to be a pet tho
id love one
but yeah idk how you would maintain it
aww yay im glad im not the only one who thinks so
poor stray cats
tbh i think im getting offtopic tho
it's hard for me to think in the morning
cya later aligator
is there somone who understand frensh

No need to ask “Can I ask…?” or “Does anyone know about…?”—it’s faster for everyone if you just ask your question! See https://dontasktoask.com/
what
the top text makes it funnier lol
As a teacher I definitely agree that people who think that shouldn't go to school, so that I don't have to deal with them
the dropout discourse is funny because the reason you see these success stories isn't because they dropped out but because they were disciplined, motivated and maybe had a stroke of luck regardless of schooling
*cough* generational wealth *cough*
so while I agree that you shouldn't limit yourself to school or a traditional career path, I think way too many people use it as cope for doing bad due to a lack of attention and discipline
yeah I'm counting that within stroke of luck
That's what they want you to do
Just my hard work, discipline, and a $400k loan from my parents
You too can be a billionaire as long as your daddy has an emerald mine.
No it’s a bit true
I mean, I agree that you don't get really rich by doing work, the key is to exploit the work of others.
Let the suckers work while you profit from that, that's always been the way
Mostly the uneducated

frequently asked mathcord questions
Goodness. I hope not 😱
Anyone with access to sciencedirect through their university can help me accessing 2 papers? My uni does not grant access to its students 😦
These are 2024 papers and I don't think I can find it elsewhere
General advice is to email the authors of the papers to see if they can give you a copy.
I did, and no response. I tried this method a couple times before and got no response
that seems wild bro
just find a friend in a position where they can access it.
Actually the opposite lol
Maybe if you count actually getting the first billion as being “self made”
But most come from wealthy families
whats the paper? ill check if i have access
it is not general advice to email the authors just fyi
it's more like particularly bad advice
I envy the brain that thought it though just so creative and pure
no I'm saying it's literally just not general advice
like you can go survey 50 people who regularly access academic literature and 49 of them will not say email the author
oh lmao
not saying it's impossible or anything
yeah most people who read research have access to said research
thats kinda wack that a uni doesnt have that
especially something like sciencedirect
why is emailing authors bad?
?
disproved with FACTS and LOGIC
like if it takes you 5 minutes to text friend/ family get them to print you something they access through their institution
vs emailing some postdoc somewhere who might get back to you at some point
seems like why would you take route 2?
yea
it's just not optimally effective imo
thats assuming you have friends or family with access
that it is. But who doesn't?
me 😔
im jk but id say its also rare to have family with access bc that means they are in academia
is that rare?
i mean, yes
particularly when you are in academia
granted it is a requirement
so I hear you, other options may be necessitated even with their suboptimality
its easy to feel that way bc you surround yourself with people in academia through your interests, field, and education
but id say the average person would have trouble finding someone they know with a phd or even a grad student
or even a stem major for that matter
bro most undergrads at decent universities get a shitload of access
doesn't matter what major they have, most universities don't gate their access by your major. You are a student of any kind, you get access.
much like an art student might go to the library and borrow* an engineering book
its also not unheard of that you only have friends at your university - but i digress its not a big deal lol
OK
yeah I mean relatively bad
there's nothing outright bad about trying any approach if any approach will do
but it a particularly ineffective way to go about it
good catch fr
it is dumb bad advice
but it's not like impossible
I'm pretty loose with my language these days pray for me
I mean it is implied that since they don't have access to the service, that people surrounding them won't have access to it either. So one has multiple options here, one can ask random internet strangers ( which might or might not work since accessing some papers comes with a tag that could get you banned if the media gets redistributed, so strangers might be more hesitant to do it ) or you can email the author which would benefit from their results being cited, and could establish a future contact point.
and sometimes they even send you more relevant literature and could send a corrected version.
So no, I don't think it is dumb bad advice
I have a meeting tomorrow with my professor regarding a seminar talk that i have to do on friday. Problem is, i have no clue whats going on, i dont really understand the material and i have not prepared particularly much. Im basically tasked to write some sagemath stuff. I had another seminar talk last friday, on which i focused on, so i only started working on this talk a few days ago. Should I just not go to the seminar, take an F and call it a day, which is of course kind of shitty (however I can just do a different seminar next semester, so the F doesnt really matter), or should I meet him tomorrow and have a humiliating experience
To be honest i could have started earlier, but i was lazy over the christmas holidays. Also this seminar is aimed at people that attend the professors lecture, i dont attend it though, i just signed up for the seminar for fun, which now seems like a kinda bad idea
Meet the professor and see how it goes from there.
Im so doomed
Maybe maybe not, one way to find out.
talk to the professor, explain your sitatuation, and humbly ask to meet with them to go over whatever you dont understand
then, work ur ass off to understand whatever it is you need to and come prepared to that meeting with questions
oh i just read you dont attend his lectures - yeah you might be cooked
I think they are probably cooked, but maybe the professor can give options on how to proceed. And I also think ghosting the seminar is probably worse.
I want to cry
Then cry, get back up on your feet, and go talk to your professor
if they "humiliate" you or dress you down or are harsh because of your poor performance and not even attending class, LISTEN, and actually go to class next term
uhhh
honestly, no matter what you're already facing the consequences of your actions
no matter what you do, make sure you take this lesson to heart and dont repeat something like this again
idk why you signed up for a seminar course only to not show up at all
master is tough bro
It doesn't matter, go do the right thing
in bachelor i got away with doing everything last second
Admit your faults
I doubt that would fly in grad school, however I am not a graduate student, so I withhold comment
its good to get humbled every once in a while, it shows where you need to improve. You just need to let the lesson sink and and take it in stride
but from everything you're saying sounds like you have other stuff going on that could be affecting ur academics
Then why are you letting yourself slack
Either do better or you're going to get washed out
think about it like this: you could give up now and promise yourself that you will be different in the future, but generally, people are creatures of habit and stick to what they normally do, and giving up now would be adhering to your old habits
if you dont give up and try your best to admit your fault and work at it, you're one step closer to changing your lazy habits
i will note that if i was a professor in that situation theres really not much you can do tho, just dont let this happen again
As silver mentioned previously, before going to the meeting, somehow try to learn the broad aspects of the topic you need to present, and during the meeting maybe you can manage to fill in some holes in your presentation with whatever your professor says.
I think today is tuesday for you probably, so you have 3 days to get ready. I think you could make a shoddy presentation work in that time.
i screwed up the big exam of my first semester
in bachelor
am i screwed if i want to get into a top school for master ?
No

does sigma equal a number like pi
if there is sigma, when here is beta? and alpha?
so if my teacher asks for it on the test I can just answer with カザミ?
Integral dépend d'un paramètre ?
That's one of the sigma move
I think ur supposed to ask them in English not french
No same same
If u need help w a question u should probably go to one of the help channel not a discussion one
Since u have asked here if an integral depends on a parameter or smth like that

Question 15:
Dear Anna,
a. I’m grateful for the advice you gave me about the project; it was really helpful.
b. I’ll keep you updated on my progress and let you know how things go.
c. I’ve made significant improvements thanks to your suggestions.
d. Let’s catch up over coffee sometime next week if you’re free.
e. Thanks again for always being supportive.
Best regards,
Pls help me arrange this

Dear Anna,
Believe it or not, I just want to let you know that my egg recently cracked as I use fae/faer pronouns and I am sapphic. Thank you for your mere attention.
Best Regards,
Diao Ye Zong
Hey guys if I say that a vector touches a plane on a point A. is it evident that the origin of said vector is (0;0;0)?
Dear Anna,
Thanks a lot for the advice you gave me about the project; it was really helpful. I will not write more, because I am not a creep.
Best regards,
me
I personally disagree with this but people told me that by universal convention it's the case
every vector in R^3 emanates from the origin technically
You could also say that technically vectors in R^3 don't emanate from anything because they're triples of real numbers, which we just interpret/conceptualize as vector arrows
(which are typically indeed conceptualized as originating at (0,0,0) )
So in the case of 3 vectors that touch a plane
It would instantly mean that the differnece lies on the plane
You see I had trouble with this cause if I don't have the same origin I disagree that it's true
And didn't understand why they had to be starting from the same origin
It bothers me that the norm and direction of the vector can be then defined by a singular point
I see no problem with this since, the vector is nor defines by its position in space but simply a direction and norm
hence it makes no difference to decide that it emanates from the origin for convenience
Fot me it does since if you're deciding that the vector emanates from the origin then its norm is decided by the point u defined in this case A
And I don't see why this should be the case since it feels like a convention, and since it's a convention it should be stipulated at the beginning
Like u need to say that, it's not for me to assume
I agree
Can anyone imagine...liking math? ew
a, c, b, d, e
You agree with rango or my sentence made sense
I m trying to be sure 100% cause I'm sending an email to the person that interviewed me.
The question was about the angle between 2 planes, with every plane having 3 vectors that have a vertex on the plane
So it's finding 2 orthogonal vectors on the planes doing the vectorial product to find the normal to the plane and then dor product between each normal.
I'm just confused on the very first part which is why i asked u guys that question
Sup

Let there be a complex number Z1 whose real part be a element of set S1={X: X=2n ; n is greater than or equal to 1} such that HCF(X,12) is 4 [ note re(Z1) is smallest of all possible values] and imaginary part of Z1 be the half of real part of Z1 and there be a another complex number Z2 and real part of Z2 be the are formed by points K=0 L=4 M=7i ( 'i' is iota =√-1)
In argand plane and imaginary part of Z2 be the length formed by point Q(0,0) and R(0,7) and there be a arithmetic progression whose second term is Re(Z1) and seventh term be Re(Z2) and mean of first term and and Re(Z1) be the smallest element in set
S2={Y : Y=3n ; n is greater than or equal to 1} then find the mean of third term and twenty third term of above mentioned AP

Like if it was just a google forms link and no one mentioned lgbt, other than i guess you looking at their profile (id assume), and made that conclusion
Which people?
Which people lmfaooo
Like youre the one clicking their profile and saying "mind their business"
And as I see it, no one had mentioned lgbt other than you
its just weird as hell

Anyone heard PhysicsWallah
karl marx talked about this
A homeopath is an interval [0, 1] with [0, 1] × X such that the from a path γ → X to (between) an other path γ' → X and ∃t∈R, we have Ht: [0, 1] → X, this is because X is weakly contractible

What’s the opposite of a set? I saw a video about that and it was just deranged then I looked it up and none of it made any sense
I can’t imagine what that even means? Can someone give me a loose explanation
lol what
what was the video about, did they give this "opposite of a set" a name?
Well, when talking about opposites you sort of have to choose your pivot, but if a set is a collection of things then, to start with, a collection of non-things is still a collection, but a non-collection of things feels impossible... and of course a non-collection of non-things is just the trivial solution
https://youtu.be/SrltwGJAiCM?si=PL4eAyDjDWy6S6M-
I can’t tell if it has a name
oh yeah ive see nthis
Maybe if it’s a group of relations instead of a group of elements but I’m not sure that makes sense on its own?
it's like the opposite of −7 is 7
but here it's not one opposite but several
it's just words, there's not enough words for everything
in maths people like it that way, use words metaphorically

No need to ask “Can I ask…?” or “Does anyone know about…?”—it’s faster for everyone if you just ask your question! See https://dontasktoask.com/
I need to put a photo but its a logic question how can I Prove ~A => ~~~A im just fried out of my mind due to just noit understanding
What about “Is this the right channel to discuss…?”?
that's fine
truth table seems the easiest
yep

Double negation
Any even number of negations is equal to 0 negations, any odd number of negations is equal to 1 negation
~A = ~~~A
And also
~A=~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A
1= Odd
0= Even
Easy negation rules
you need a \ here to prevent discord from thinking the ~'s are markdown
or $\lnot$
qiuzlm
i think the point is to prove that double negation does in fact behave that way
cant assume it
Bbl frizzy
Oups
Bbl frizyyyy

Rizzy?
(Ik it’s drizzy)
Oh wrong discussion, was wondering why it was so quiet
Is there any ways to know if a number is a prime number?
Like how to know if 36739 is a prime number?
Double negation, among other rules in sentential logic, is simply an assumption you need to make to do proofs
It is possible that his instructor wants him to like explain it though
It’s like PEMDAS, you have to assume PEMDAS to do math but I doubt you’ll be expected to know why
so wouldnt that make the exercise useless
I think there are fancy ways to check certain numbers
but mostly it comes down to "check if it has factors"
is it 2^n - 1 that is special
y = mx + b
lets start with some simple cases if m and b are rational then there will be rational solutions
if m is rational but b is irrational then there will be no rational solutions because y - mx will be rational when x and y are rational but this is meant to = b which irrational
if m is irrational but b is rational then also we will get no solutions because y - b will be rational but mx will be irrational
so the questions boils down to if y = mx + b has rational solutions when m and b are irrational
@drifting lark
we have already found examples where it is possible like y = pi x + pi has a rational solution of (-1, 0)
but must there always be a rational solution
something tells me that is not a simple question
when b/m is rational, i.e. b = m r for some rational r we can write y = m(x + r) and we will find a rational point (-r, 0) this is the trick we just used in the case m = pi
My intuition says we could use Cantor's diagonalization method to prove that, for a given m, there must be some b such that the equation has no rational solutions.
(corrected some bad wording)
i think maybe there is some argument to found by considering the quotient R / Q but i dont remember jack shit about jack shit and its too late to try and figure anything out now
but i wish you good luck in playing around with this
Do cats know things?

Thank you!
if its not allowed to send it here pls lmk i'll remove
I have a counter question
How would you solve it step by step?
Yeah just realized its gonna take some complicated steps, I though it's just like determining odd/even number
Determining if a number is prime is like famously highly non trivial for large numbers
From the school of thought that brought us "I don't know why people are so obsessed with prime number generators, we already have the Willans formula"
Question : what does ℅ symbol mean, and is it related to % symbol?
,w ℅
cerpent
Do we actually want large prime numbers for something, or just for the sake of it?
I believe a number of encryption/decryption algorithms require large primes
I guess you could say prime number generators could tell us something about the nature of primes and that could help with proving some big results
Ah
The fundamental idea being that if you've got a number that's a product of two very large primes, you can't easily determine what they are (because factoring huge numbers is computationally difficult)
But if you know one of the primes, you can easily find out the other by simple division
Can we hide some message in those?
RSA (Rivest–Shamir–Adleman) is a public-key cryptosystem, one of the oldest widely used for secure data transmission. The initialism "RSA" comes from the surnames of Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir and Leonard Adleman, who publicly described the algorithm in 1977. An equivalent system was developed secretly in 1973 at Government Communications Headquarte...
I mean, not directly, and I'm not big on cryptography in general, but you can study the RSA algorithm
RSA mentioned?!
@neat lintel #❓how-to-get-help
Yeah, and I think I was wrong about the fundametal idea (it's not about recovering the other prime if you know one of them, just that you can't find out the primes if you just know the product, but you can obviously easily get the product from the two primes)
practical impossibility™
it's about finding d such that de mod n = 1 where n = pq
if you know d then you can decrypt it
you give e and n to everyone else
to encrypt where m is the message calculate m^e mod n and for decryption do m^d mod n
It’s actually quite fun and straightforward to work through the algorithm, it was like an introductory task to learn sagemath in my LA/ring theory class
sqrt((1 - cos A)/(1 + cos A)) = cos ecA - cot A
??
i'm dead
i just finished half of some maths olympics
it's 3 problems then and 3 later
and one was impossible
given q(x) has exponent 2023 and q(n)=1/n when n belongs to {1, 2, 3, ..., 2022, 2023, 2024}, calculate q(2025)
i hate whoever came up with that bs 🔥🔥🔥
wait i think i have a friend matematcian who can solv that
but in french 😅
i suppose by "q(x) has exponent 2023" you mean q(x) is a polynomial in real coefficients with degree 2023; then nq(n)-1 is a polynomial of degree 2024, and you know its 2024 roots, so you may write xq(x)-1 = A(x-1)(x-2)...(x-2024), put x=0 to find A, then put x=2025 to find the answer
The math you learn in high school. People, student, math teachers think it’s math. But it is not. It is a boring curriculum, a punishment for students who must learn very menial, repetitive tasks, solving time and over the same kind of routine problems. No mathematician ever computes an integral anymore, not even a difficult one: they use tools like WolframAlpha. Plus, while math is mostly a creative discipline, school math is the perfect opposite of creativity. Sadly, people think they had to learn and learn to hate math at school, but actually it was no math that they learned: it is more more akin to memorizing a phone book. No surprise math has a bad reputation, but actually, that bad reputation is not against math, but against what people wrongly believe is math. And of course, that bad reputation is well deserved when viewed under this perspective.
would you say this is true?
not mine
basically, do you actually compute stuff anymore or are you logically thinking about stuff in math
or what do you gets do in really high levels of math?
like math major type
I compute lots of things
this is a common feeling among people who one way or another managed to get really good at math. Most of those people haven't experienced really struggling to work out something like 4/5 - 2/3, or solving 3(2x + 4) = x, but I can tell you a LOT of people REALLY struggle with these things. How would these people do in a curriculum designed to teach creative research math? They wouldn't stand a chance. The curriculum is designed to get most people to a basic level of competency and it's pretty miserable at doing that. Improving this situation is a very difficult problem
id say this is like 30% correct
there is definitely an aspect in which high school level math is boring and repetitive and that comes down to curriculum and the teachers (not their fault though, they dont get paid enough etc)
but thats not to say that creativity cannot be found in this level of maths, nor is it true that no one is doing computations
I see
Thank you guys for your answers
I personally think we should have more divided school paths, where most people should go down paths with much, much less math required for them. Making everybody learn how to factor and solve specially chosen cubics is patently absurd to me.
Make basic arithmetic required, and a little bit of algebra and geometry - and I really mean a little. That's enough for most people. People who realize early on they like math should have the option for a path that gets into the creative research stuff quickly
i disagree
most students pre uni are not in positions to determine what they think they should study or whatever
much less decide on a career path
i dont disagree with the notion that how math ends up being delivered tends to be quite drab in highschool
Hi
cosec A-cotA =rootunder(1-cosA/1+cosA)
imo people should learn more math, just different things
learning stuff like calculus is really an artifact of an antiquated education system
today learning things like linear algebra and especially statistics is much more important so you can interpret the world around you
i would add a basic logic class too

yeah I agree
Also linear algebra is just easier
Kinda
i mean you need some understanding of it to understand statistics
Not really
its just that grinding computing derivatives is worthless lol
thats an artifact of when people realized we need more engineers and computers didnt exist
its also just easier on the teacher to only teach computational skills as opposed to ideas
My calculus class actually didn’t get into the more

hello there
This is only as powerful as you’d like if the cat is cartesian closed. In a cartesian cat this can only apply a function n times. It can’t do primitive recursion.
To do that we need to define a so called parametrized natural numbers object instead.

Worth it for what
Just generally learning it? Probably not if you don’t have an exact use case in mind

Y is 42 the answer to life
It is, but I'm afraid Douglas Adams has beaten you to this conclusion
I mean, either him or the white mice whose work he documented
But why
I mean, he's dead, so we can't ask him why he wrote it
Well he is wrong
That is entirely possible, of course
I'm jk
I thought the point of jokes is that they're funny
But the creator of 42 is the answer to life
Because if you create the answer of life you would have to know the answer to life
I don't think there is anyone we can attribute as "the creator of 42"
Natural numbers are a quite obvious object and were discovered/invented in multiple cultures across history, independently
Yes but if you are of religion you know God created man with the idea of creating the number 42
I'm not and she didn't
You are of course entitled to that opinion
Yeah, I don't think I will
Well if you change your mind it is all about proving God is real
Surely the point of the existence of God is a belief
you can't prove a belief, either you accept the axiom or you don't
But I can prove it
I'm sure your God will appreciate that
Would you like to tell me why you think he is not real
Not really, the whole point of metaphysical beings is that they're outside of the realm of our observation, therefore unfalsifiable
You can believe in them and I can not, and it doesn't really matter
Yes but said metaphysical being has come to earth in human form jesus
guys i dont get how -1x-1= 1 but -1 squared is still -1
You are of course entitled to that opinion; since we don't really have much historical sources on Jesus we can't really make a judgment of his divinity based on observations; but we can believe it or not as we prefer
(-1)^2 is 1, though
on my calc is says its -1
We do have proof that Jesus can to earth
We do have a proof that a person corresponding to the biblical references to "Jesus Christ" existed and was executed in Judea during the reigns of Augustus/Tiberius, certainly
Reliable historical sources aren't really conclusive as to whether that person was the son of any god, though
Apparently he did lead/inspire some kind of sect that was later troublesome to the Romans
Which is why Roman sources mention him
There is evidence that he has done miracles
Again, you are perfectly entitled to believe in those miracles, in modern day people believe in homeopathy, astrology and free markets, so why not
But if there is proof that he was the son of God y not believe it
$$$ mentioned
miracle is my calculator is telling me -1 squared is -1
I suppose my standards of what constitutes a "proof" are different than yours
And again, I think that's fine
What are your standards
I hope you and your god are very happy
-1^2 = -1
WHAT
Well, in mathematics what constitutes a proof is fairly well established, outside of mathematics I favour the scientific method rooted in reproducible experiments.
Sadly we've only had one purported son of the biblical god so far, so reproducibility is a bit tricky
one that you know of, for all you know i'm another one
Oh well done! Does that mean the end times are upon us?
That would explain a lot
well don't get your hopes up that i'm gonna turn your water into wine
some kid burned down a congressman's office because tiktok briefly shut down
i can turn beer into pee
hello brother
Although come to think of it, I genuinely don't know my dad
that you know of
So I'm either the son of god or just an ordinary bastard
I will dm you my answer to that when I can
Please don't
i've been reading too much poorly formatted math, i see "god" and i think g composed with d
I really want to try to convince you in Joshua ten there is a section were the sun and the moon stand still for a day
when somebody is obviously not interested in your religious views, it’s polite not to press them about it
I've already been Christian, but then I read up and apparently god wants to kill me because I'm gay
So I'm not going to support him as a matter of principle
You should've started with that
i liked him better when he only turned people into salt
I think it was just one person though
that you know of
I feel it can be argued, like there still are christians that accept homosexuality and there are even some lgbt priests that are more or less acknowledged by the pope
The bibble explicitly says that gay people should be murdered, though
But yeah christianism is quite anti-homosexuality
The old bible yeah, there’s also the sodom part where its more or less explicit that the reason they all died was because yeah they did that
The new one i do not know
‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
Leviticus, 20:13
In the Bible it states being gay is a sin but we sin every day so if you ask for forgiveness you will be saved
So unless you reject the Old Testament, you're obligated to murder gay people
That's what your god commands
But i feel many christians are like “look the bible can still be discussed because it was written in a particular historical context”, but i more or less agree (i’m athee btw)
Do you know what a philosophical system is?
Is it a way to somehow reconcile your holy book commanding you to murder gay people with you not doing that?
the bible is not the basis of christianity
then the problem of sorting what is supposed to be taken as true and what’s “just written in a particular historical context” is insurmountable
no
A system of philosophy or philosophical system is seen as a set of statements that contain fundamental theses about at least four well-established parts of conceptual inquiry, since they are prerequisites for any discourse.
For the record, as a gay person I would very much prefer to remain unmurdered, which is why I reject the idea that the old testament is somehow a moral lodestone
What
You should also know that the Bible, like any other instrument of human construction, even if inspired, has flaws.
which means there is no perfect bible and will never be
The bible has flaws? Really?!
In the Bible it states if you ask for forgiveness you will be saved
Basically you can be gay but you have to confess 2s before you die and you are saved
Why is me loving my husband something that requires forgiveness?
Why do you talk like you're bothered? I'm not saying the obvious out of coldness, I'm just reminding you of a point that changes your immediate perspective on what was said.
I see, that's why
I wasn't being bothered, I was being sarcastic.
Yeah i feel you dont need anyway to be christian X) but many gay christian people are in this deep suffering because of their faith and community pressure
You are free to love your husband but the bible states being gay is a sin and God created man and women to love eachother
Its very sad but i feel its one of those things that might evolve, like the catholicism really need to go under modernization if it wants to survive
Like blockchain ai and shit
Yep, which provides bigots with a convenient excuse for gay-bashing
Don't worry, there are many other religions that hate homosexuality, you don't have to feel pain for one instrument or another or for all, these opinions and doctrines are not in your control.
What's a bigot
Discrimination is the process of making unfair or prejudicial distinctions between people based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they belong or are perceived to belong, such as race, gender, age, species, religion, physical attractiveness or sexual orientation. Discrimination typically leads to groups being unfairly treated o...
So someone biased
I dont know if a christian should hate homosexuality, it goes against the christ’s teaching, who even accepted prostitution and every sins etc. (From the perspective of a christian of course)
everyone is biased
I feel the good christian should even accept that murder is human and be forgiven
I will confirm what you say from personal experience. In my case, I can testify that what I see is not mere suffering, but an expression of love that perhaps, forgive my presumption, you are not yet accustomed to. In addition to others I know who, like any other "sin", are welcomed and fight their deviations aiming for a greater love, because that is what they believe in and it is not something that is imposed. I am not denying that there are other cases in which there are impositions, especially family ones, but I also cannot ignore so many particular cases that inspire me and that clearly highlight the effects of the so-called "sexual revolution" on people's minds.
so white and colored men could pee together but they could not drink water together?
accepting the sinner is not the same as loving the sin
True
-1^2 = -1(1^2). (-1)^2 = -1x-1=1. the paranthesesis matters
geometry and calculus are probably the funniest topics of maths
wait I vaguely remember you referencing a boyfriend at some point, and now you are referencing a husband. Does that mean you got married? If so congrats!
Sadly not really, because my country's laws don't allow same-sex marriages (see also, bigotry)
But we've been together for 17 years and we've made as much of the legal arrangements outside of the official "marriage" label as we could
And the people who think it's somehow a sin can fuck right off
i will like to congratulate you for this its basically marriage
17 yrs is a super long time congrats on that
the bible doesnt actually mention this explicitly
Its quite fucked up in the 21 century that people that love each other still can’t marry in some country. In some countries discriminations are even getting worse..
It does explicitly mention that gay people should be murdered, though (Leviticus 20:13, and probably other places)
outrageous
That may be true but the bible says being gay is wrong so it would leave you no choice but to marry the opposite sex
it doesnt say that
its purely interpretation and product of translation
its also the old testament so..
Just because it is the ot doesn't mean it's wrong
Corinthians 6:9-10:
Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
ah so slavery is ok then in your view
Not everything is wrong some things changed
Mark 10:6-9:
But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a] 7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’[c] So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
thats fair
so you pick and choose which things are wrong
interesting
No
being gay is not a sin, to practice acts of sexual disorder is
like any other sin or any other sexual disorder act
😐
why? because science is cool
what
When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not satisfy her owner, he must allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. But if the slave’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave but as a daughter.
I am unsure but that may be true
Do you stand by this?
No well for a christian i think what he wants to say is that being gay is not a sin but having sex with same gender is a sin
And science taught the chritians that homosexuality is qbiological
wow, that makes it a lot better (not)
Yeah its not
If you prefer the new testament, here's a passage from Ephesians:
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
this was part of the employee handbook where i worked
I mean, there's a reason radical free-marketeers and bible-bashers are such a firm alliance
So Hitler wasn't guilty?
i briefly worked at a company where they had "prayer breakfasts" every morning, yet another great reason not to be an "early to work" type
this was in orange county, ca (of course)
I mean, science has proven to us that mental disorders are biological consequences. As a good naturalist (in the literary sense) that I am, I believe that the actions of a psychopath, for example, whether manipulating (to reduce their possible response regarding disproportion) or killing, have no connection to moral action, since this would be just an object of behavioral analysis that acts only in a fictitious space; reality is only limited to forces, scalars and material things. The blame cannot be placed on someone who was moved only by nature; the beauty of biology would be this imperfection (which exists only for us).
every person is "moved" by nature
You are referring to the 4 meanings of movement, right?
no
From what premisse and logical thinking did you arrive at this ?
This has nothing to do with my message, but let's go to some context that you left out:
Exodus 21:2-8
[2]When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years; in the seventh year he shall go out free without paying anything.
[3]If he went in alone, he shall go out alone; if he has a wife, his wife shall go with him.
[4]But if his master gave him a wife, and she bore him sons and daughters, the woman and her children shall be her master's property, and he shall go out alone.
[5]But if the slave says, 'I love my master, my wife and my children; I do not want to be set free,'
[6]then his master shall bring him before God and make him stand near the doorpost or the post, and pierce his ear with an awl; and the slave shall be his servant forever.
[7]If a man has sold his daughter to be a slave, she shall not go out free on the same terms as the slave. [8]If she displeases her master who had destined her for himself, he shall redeem her; but he may not sell her to a foreigner after she has been unfaithful to him.
So you stand by that in its entirety?
me when i don't believe in the bible
why weren't foreigners allowed to buy the unfaithful girl slaves? was it a national security thing?
The premise that the guilt we are considering, and I have not seen anyone escaping the most common of systems when it comes to the subject, which is the Aristotelian system, is an immaterial part of the set of relations of the psyche, like a function whose independent variable is its responsibility, but this is contained in a higher reality (possible universe that moves those moved). So, by your message that affirms a certain "refutation" from the scientific proof blah blah blah that this is a psychological problem, I just assumed that you are, therefore, affirming that there is no truth that encompasses, in itself, the morality that responds to the natural purpose. Therefore, I conclude that everything that exists is only matter and act, but does not depend on a first cause that sustains it and reflects in itself the purposes of its "caused". Basically, if we cannot attribute blame to those who practice sexual disorders, including the scientifically proven biological homosexuality, we also cannot attribute blame to those who practice the famous "evil", as this also has no dependence on natural reality, it would just be the name given to a pattern that SHOULD occur.
a big flaw here is you think being gay is a disorder
if you say that, might as well have everything being a disorder
are mfs like this real or am I being punked
the only problem, actually, was that you didn't refute it
yeah there are many disorders
ugh im not dealing with this guy
Cherry picking + out of context +
Joking.
we don't need to refute assaholic takes buddy. Your opinion leads to suffering, ours doesn't. I win you lose night night bye bye sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite
people love money, people kill, people control others, people like being depressed, people like having sex with this, with those things, with other things, with illegal ones and it goes
(Though note that this is restricted to Hebrew slaves)
I mean, you probably should cherry pick the best slaves rather than just taking the whole batch unexamined
Anyway
We should not rly discuss more dicey topics like this here, in a maths server
Fair
Especially since i do not like this direction lol
The discussion of philosophy is even very related to mathematics, since it uses common resources such as logic.
o pedro vaimver goatis pra entender
why the hell we getting religious in the numbers server
Tollendo ponens
huh
im just here to up my numbers game dawg not to discuss the validity of my existence
Ask Thales and Pythagoras
we disallow arranging financial transactions on this server and strongly discourage doing so on discord in general
easy to get scammed
Your argument still goes through if you replace "homosexuality" with "manhood", "blondeness", "genetic illness"
"if we cannot attribute blame to those who are blonde, we also cannot attribute blame to those who practice the famous evil"
The problem is no one thinks being blonde is a priori something that someone should be blamed for
hey would someone who is very good at math be able to help me and my friend with our math work it is due tomorrow and we have been stumped the passed hour
!help
To ask for mathematics help on this server, please open your own help channel or help thread. See #❓how-to-get-help for instructions.
@raven plaza i had posted for help a bit ago but got no reply so i thought asking in here would help me get someone willing to help us.
And why should there be guilt associated with homosexuality?
Immoral for which reasons?
I can't see where you explain how this is "immoral" or is a "disorder"
@raven plaza quick question would you be able to help me and my friend?
Hm what's your help channel
well i posted my question into the help forum
but i dont know how to make it a channel
mathematics discord btw
and you're doing all this to prove a single guy wrong
been at this since 2:30 😭 🙏
cool... go make a book about it or something
prove them all wrong
about your points...?
must have a lot to say
this can be your step into writing
thats what i thought until i read the republic
its not common knowledge
everything can be examined on a deeper level
i dont think plato became renown from assuming everyone knew what justice and injustice meant
i didnt, no
my ap lang teacher had us do a whole analysis on it
its interesting, kinda
just ping mods for shitters like that
@leaden torrent Hey can you answer a couple math questions for me they wouldnt be hard at all for you
ill send you money if necesarry
like if you can help me please do
we dont allow offering money for mathematics help on the server
regardless, please read #❓how-to-get-help
how about nitro
like bro please
i got no responce of value from the help
he just told me i need to find lengths but gave me no insight on how to answer the question
just gave me a riddle
They help in that way so you can understand the question, what's happening behind the scene, rather than blantantly giving answer
Wait nvm
i want to test what i don't know about math in general i need a website something that can show me what level i am at what i need to improve on for free send me the link to it
Can anyone give me some recursive math problems for 12th grade?
find the sum of this sequence 1,2,3,4,5,...,n
n(n+1)/2
yes i know
show your work tho bozo
what are some good tutoring websites for math? i am looking to be a tutor not to be tutored
Rude
but fair
ok
i am an undergraduate mathematics student so i dont have a degree yet
i would suggest to look locally
preferably directly without involving a third party
I'm going to Paris this wednesday (22/01) for a week and then going to Brussels for a week. Does anybody have any expositions or museums related to math or physics to recommend in these locations?
Hey, yeah in paris there is a new math museum that opened last year, i’ve not been there yet but heard its good
If you understand french, every month there ‘s a free exposé from famous mathematicians oriented to undergrads at the institut henry poincaré
Also if its not science related i would suggest you to spend half a day in the pompidou if its not closed yet
The louvre might still have an exhibition around « la folie »,
Anyone here into Lambda Calculus / Recursion Theory?
No need to ask “Can I ask…?” or “Does anyone know about…?”—it’s faster for everyone if you just ask your question! See https://dontasktoask.com/
Ah, I did not see that channel
I don't have a particular question yet, I was just curious
You asked if someone were interested in a topic without having a question? You do realize that you're allowed to start a discussion spontaneously, right?
i already have a tutoring job at my college i was just looking for online opportunities
what is the name of the museum?
i was searching about that one! It is called Maison Poincaré, right?
ok, i will look into it!
Hihi uhmmm
Can I ask about tips for learners or new people?
I'll be honest, I never paid attention to math classes, but in the last semesters I took physics classes and I loved it.
So I would like to study physics at university but I have seen that you have to master mathematics very well and well... Here I am '^^
Oh right, that's a good question
Well, mainly some way to start, places or sites that you can recommend me for it, books or things like that and well maybe some tips for studying

What math level do you feel comfortable up to
Ah, maybe from what I saw in high school, integral calculus, probability and statistics and derivatives, I think that would be good.
Professor leonard has youtube videos
There is khan academy
If you want a textbook, a pretty standard college calculus textbook is Calculus by Stewart
Oh oki I will watch that videos and enter those classes then
guys, what do i do when i want to learn a new thing but i just dont fucking understand like a dumbass
well, the good thing is you want to learn, so keep at it and just let it take as long as it takes and try to be patient with yourself.
feels like im a monkey trying to understand calculus
but thank you
you might have to change up your approach and keep trying different things to see what works for you
I think to some extent, we all kind of are in this boat haha

Maison poincaré is the name of the museum, but the exposé thing is different, its here: https://www.ihp.fr/fr/mathematic-park
but if you don't understand french, it might not be great
they sometime get quite hardcore
oh, hi
Bruh
hi
hello!
hi

oh, thank you!
No problem!

I don't speak french, sadly 😢
Goat
Oh its like 3 and half hours ago lol
I am late actually

Any online sites with good practice problems for Sets and Venn Diagrams?

when :hodge: enters chat

who wants to talk abt grilled cheese sandwiches 😄
whats the difference between asking about stuff in the #help channels vs the more focused channels below like #calculus or #linear-algebra
Different people hang out in different channels
Oh, and #linear-algebra in particular gets spammed a lot
Take that as you will
um well
i wanna ask a question about something called newton's method
but i dont wanna ask in the #help channels because its not for school or a project its just a thing im curious about
research tells me its a calculus thingy
but i dont remember encountering such a thing in my time in calculus
It's a calculus thing
I would suggest in general asking for forgiveness rather than permission
Just ask in whatever channel appears appropriate, and people will point you in the right direction if necessary.
#calculus is fine
what is the difference between d/dx and dy/dx?
D/dx is the operator that transform a function of a certain space into another, why is called its derivative
Dy/dx is the derivative of y
So d/dx (y) = dy/dx
so this is general, the other is specific, right?
Neither are general nor specific, just y is either a function or a function holder
like d/dx is the generic term
with dy/dx designating a specific function
yeah basically yeah
d/dx is an operator
never understood why massive servers puts lgbtq+ flags where they don't even fit, what has to Physics and math with lgbtq+?
feels out of place, most of the time.
Gay people exist, horrible cunts with nothing better to do give them a hard time, we want to demonstrate that’s not cool here
Basically why
like 80% of active users here are lgbt
our server's icon is like the subtlest LGBT colors ever in existence I don't get why people complain about it unless it's their own ideological bias against it
it looks cool and if anything it's fair to subtly signal we're a safe space for diverse folks
one time there was this guy that argued about it with mods for like 20 mins
many such incidents........................
true
I had never noticed it in the old logo and honestly if I wasn’t in the channel documenting the creation of this one I’m not sure I’d have noticed it either
It fits quite nicely. I like the design
I think most server don't tolerate being hatefull to lgbtq+ . Usually server with are against or don't care are pretty clear about it
Just as we’re very clear about this being a safe space for LGBT people
Well I guess, but why specifally for LGBT, why not let's say asians, blacks, jewish people, polish people, russians e.c.t
Do they need more safe places than those groups of people?
I'm guessing it is more popular to hate lgbtq+ person than black person
This isn’t a ranking game
We can have safe spaces for all those groups.
Why are you presenting it as if we have to decide which group to favour?
Support isn’t mutually exclusive
we can and in fact we do, in our case the #rules says to not "harass and discriminate against groups or individuals"
This is a safe space for everyone other than bigots
I think what makes LGBTQ+ as a group stand out in this case is that they're more or less uniformly present across the entire world
and have collectively decided to identify using various symbolisms e.g. the pride flag
We’re all here because we love maths, and anyone can love maths and should be given a space where they can enjoy that in peace
Oh well, I was just curious. Good to know

i had to read this a few times to realise u werent being homophobic here
😭
thought that was very uncharacteristic of Nope
a "but" in the middle would help lol
i think i was automentally inserting a comma between 'do' and 'give'
Hey can someone help me with a simple bearing problem?
Hello
Hi

We listen we don't judge
@upper girder hello

To be fair, there are quite a few horrible cunts among gay people
point makes a lot of sense
At least it stood out as weird
"A but in the middle would help" sounds interesting without context

Yep, here I am
(your local biased) News Channel is looking for you, they want to make you CEO
sorry in advance if this is not the right chat box
Is anyone looking for M1 (Cambridge) basic notes? Feel free to knock if interested.
i will spew right wing talking points and take leftists out of context like no other :3

erm... so basically like every middle ages guild
A gayild
I deem you a worthy member of the house of gay
Real

dm modmail @polar panther
modmail is how you reach the mods
It’s giving ban appeal
do i look like i read my dms
it's not, you just dm the bot, it's just like you're having a conversation.
Well that isn’t happening
wow! it worked!

I guess we'll never know what they needed to talk about

Complete the quote !!
Give them a hard time. We want to demonstrate that's not cool around here.
that's amazing
BOMBAAAAAAAAA
Good Evening. Just asking is cleopatra, cleo from Stack?
what do you mean?
hundreds of years ago, how did we make maps with any accuracy?
I think the simple answer is "we didn't, they sucked"
but idk
how would you figure out where the equator is
like you would've heard tales about how other places have different weather, and tales about how if you sail far enough south, it's the opposite season of the year
Maps have been one of the most important human inventions for millennia, allowing humans to explain and navigate their way through the world.
When and how the earliest maps were made is unclear, but maps of local terrain are believed to have been independently invented by many cultures. The earliest surviving maps include cave paintings and etch...
this just confirms the "we didn't they sucked" statement
we had to develop very sophisticated navigation techniques for the sake of making long-distance sea voyages without getting hopelessly lost
okay yeah that one's pretty impressive
well you can estimate your location with things like sextants and compasses
you can get pretty accurate maps by very carefully mapping coastlines with a huge amount of effort and time
CHAT DID I COOK
idk what that is but looks cool
system 1: unconscious, long-term memory, think "feeling" or "intuition"
system 2: conscious, short-term memory, think "reasoning" or "attention"
the table is supposed to classify different types of conflicts when someone doesn't want to do some X which is good for them
the idea came to me cause i was thinking about school and the fact that different students might not want to do the same thing, but they "don't want to do it" in different ways
internalized transphobia sounds like the rare case; I'd defer to teaching why X is good
(I'm not reliable in determining more about dis)
I see, reminds me of cybernetics terms
