shell fern
#

how do I write a math research paper?

#

I have to write one for class but the teacher didn't really make it clear how we should like make the topic

#

like I know solving an unsolved problem or discovering a proof in mathematics is like the basis of a bunch of papers but im in high school so that's too hard for me

#

so how would I make a research paper with some original content

wild lantern
shell fern
#

how is that original though

#

bc its just like rerwiting information that I found elsewhere

wild lantern
#

You're not going to do original research as a high schooler on your own most likely.

shell fern
#

but I feel like it should be directed

wild lantern
#

Directed in what sense?

shell fern
#

and like do somethign at least resembling original content

shell fern
wild lantern
#

I think the expectation that you're going to do something original or novel is unrealistic.

shell fern
#

yeah, but I feel like it should have a purpose

wild lantern
#

It is not uncommon to finish a math undergrad degree without having done any research

shell fern
#

like not just regurgitating information about the topic

wild lantern
#

The purpose here would be for you to learn math that is new to you and to communicate that math to other people.

shell fern
ionic star
#

it's necessarily original

#

it's like news can;t be unbiased

#

because they have to skip some news entirely

wild lantern
ionic star
#

the things you said and the parts you skipped are orignal to you

wild lantern
#

Seems a lot more like you need to ask them what they mean by "originality" here.

shell fern
ionic star
#

same as unique

wild lantern
#

I think the expectation that thought to do something "original" is either vague at best or stupid at worst.

shell fern
#

ok I guess i'll ask my teacher

#

should I have like a thesis then? cause for historal papers

#

historical

#

like what do I start it with

wild lantern
#

I do not know what the requirements of your paper are or how they want you to structure it.

#

Like, imo

shell fern
#

what do they usually start with

wild lantern
#

The sanest overarching goal would be to pick an area of math you think is cool and try and explain it in a way that a laymen can understand. And this would probably guide how you'd write this kind of paper.

ionic star
#

i don't think it's vague

#

or i guess yeah i think there's no expectation

sand schooner
#

Can anyone help me solve trigonometry

ionic star
#

so if there is, it's stupid and unexpected

wild lantern
#

So like you'd probably start with a problem that the math you're talking about intends to solve. Explain it, the background. Maybe some history. Then maybe you explain some of the formal definitions and ideas.

shell fern
#

honestly yeah now that I think of it

wild lantern
#

Then possibly try and explain some results using those tools

shell fern
#

in alg 1 when I asked my teacher how to make it original he was just like "yeah do something new"

wild lantern
#

Maybe end on like, some future things people do with the math you're talking about.

#

Something like that I guess.

wild lantern
#

"Something new", according to who? You can't read this dudes mind.

#

As a hs student there's only so much that should be expected of you mathematically too.

ionic star
#

if you use the words that people already use there's some originality in it already (because you skipped some parts you consider unimportant and that choice is not predefined)

#

if you start naming things, that's even more original

wild lantern
#

I don't think guessing at what counts as original here is so productive.

ionic star
#

i do

wild lantern
#

The person grading them clearly has something in mind and has marked them down in the past for not doing it.

ionic star
#

so i'm guessing what they have in mind

wild lantern
#

They should just ask this person what they want.

#

Yeah, that's a bad strategy compared to just ... asking the person doing the grading what they want.

ionic star
#

they won't tell

wild lantern
#

They will if they don't suck.

ionic star
#

the teacher wants you to guess the password, they won't give it up

wild lantern
#

That's a horrible way to grade in general.

#

Grading and evaluation just shouldn't be some silly guessing game.

shell fern
#

wait how would I make a paper that stands out then

wild lantern
#

Rubrics exist for a reason.

shell fern
#

without like making anything new

wild lantern
#

"Standing out" is subjective.

ionic star
#

if guessing what the teacher has in mind without asking is unproductive

#

then everything is unproductive

wild lantern
#

That's a silly conclusion to make.

shell fern
#

for like my county

#

a bunch of students do it

ionic star
#

you;re not implying that "horrible" means it doesn't happen

#

means you're implying that playing stupid games is unproductive

wild lantern
#

Cool, but that doesn't mean "lol imma guess" is the right choice if you don't know the standard you're being held to.

ionic star
#

i'm pretty sure it follows that everything is unproductive

wild lantern
#

I'm pretty sure you're jumping to silly conclusions

#

Irl if you had some work evaluation to do and you were unsure of what standards you had to meet you would ask.

#

Professors and teachers put effort and time into defining standards and rubrics as well.

#

If it's unclear what you need to do or what requirements you need to meet, asking for clarification is basically always preferable to just guessing.

#

Believe it or not, you aren't a mindreader and any expectations that you are is just incredibly dumb.

ionic star
#

yeah you should ask, i said they won't tell

wild lantern
#

It really depends on the professor. Like, a good one will at least try to help.

ionic star
#

and you dismised it cimpletely

wild lantern
#

Yeah because it's a silly conclusion to jump to.

ionic star
#

which one

wild lantern
#

A good teacher wants you to do well and will try to help you however they can if you come to them with genuine questions like this.

ionic star
#

it's silly to start guessing now before you asked?

#

why?

wild lantern
#

I am dismissing that, because it is silly.

#

You don't know this professor.

ionic star
#

there's like 20% chance they won't tell, why not start guessing

wild lantern
wild lantern
ionic star
#

there's time before that happens

#

you don't know pogrx maybe

wild lantern
#

Man, you really want to be right about this.

ionic star
#

they can;t find a more productive way to spend time

wild lantern
#

Not gonna lie your point here is incredibly stupid.

#

Like, no, don't just guess or try to read some randos mind. Just ask if something is unclear.

ionic star
#

why

#

you have time to guess, in case they don't tell
if you have nothing better to do, start guessing, start asking what they could mean on discord

#

how is it stupid

wild lantern
#

Because you can't read a persons mind and getting clarification on the actual standards you are being held to is more likely to lead to you meeting those standards than making up your own set of standards in your head that could be totally wong.

ionic star
#

just don't apply them if they tell you lmao

wild lantern
#

Why not just ask instead?

ionic star
#

maybe it's nighttime

wild lantern
#

Maybe jumping to conclusions randomly is silly.

#

You can not know stuff at night. Nobody will come arrest you for it I promise.

ionic star
#

maybe i'm silly so on any topic you would only admit i'm right when you misunderstand me?

wild lantern
#

I feel like I understand you pretty well. I just think your point is bad.

ionic star
#

you didn't admit i'm right, so it stands

#

if you understand correctly, you won't admit i'm right

wild lantern
#

Why would I admit you're right? Am I not being blunt enough? I think your point is bad and that you are wrong.

ionic star
#

if we're assuming i'm silly you wouldn't admit i'm right unless you misunderstood what i'm saying

Peak silly behavior

# edgy adder can anyone suggest good reference books for mathematics for data science.

Depends on what level do you want to look into and what kind of "Data Science" you are aiming for. If importing sklearn is consider advanced or complex, then you can start from some basic calculus and basic statistics (typical freshman textbook would do). There usually no one-for-all textbook or book on math for Data Science because expectation in the field varies. You can just use only basic math for day to day analysis, or you could use the whole optimal transport field to tackle on the problem in Data Science.

At the very least, you probably need: Multivariate Calculus, Linear Algebra, Statistics, Probability (probably not math student kind of probability). These are widely just freshman level class which you can use typical freshman level textbooks for it.
These are optional topics but is really useful: Real analysis, Complex analysis, Stochastic Processes (or even, stochastic calculus), Optimal Transport, PDE (if you are into the computer vision), Optimization, and other that I can't think of on top of my head.

Advanced Statistics and Probability book:

  • "Statistical Inference" (Casella and Berger, 2024) is a classical introductory book to mathematical statistics. Mind you that problems in there are really challenging but also rewarding.
  • "Mathematical Statistics" (Shao, 2010) is also classic book on mathematical statistics. Usually suggested after Casella.
  • "Theory of Statistics" (Schervish, 1995) another well-known classical one. Good read if you are into more Bayesian statistics.
  • "Bayesian Data Analysis" (Gelman et al., 2016) really good book if you are into the Bayesian statistics. However, the prerequisite and introductory part is a bit lacking. You might need to have some background to tackle this book comfortably.
  • "Probability: Theory and Examples" (Durrett, 2019) Classic and good book on probability period.

If you are more advanced and into the modeling

  • "An Introduction to Statistical Learning" (James et al., 2023) which should cover the basic of statistical learning. Essentially machine learning but from statistics perspective. Available free online from the author.
  • "Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning" (Bishop, 2006) very good in-detail book on machine learning. Very much Bayesian perspective of ML. Also very classical text on this. I think this also available for free online.
  • "The Elements of Statistical Learning" (Hastie, Tibshirani, and Friedman, 2009) essentially extension of "An Introduction to Statistical Learning". Very through
  • "Modern Multivariate Statistical Techniques" (Izenman, 2006) Good book for anything multivariate (including regression, PCA, a bit of manifold learning, etc.)

For some theoretical stuff

  • "Foundations of Machine Learning " (Mohri, Rostamizadeh, and Talwalkar, 2018) will touch upon the machine learning from ground up. Good for someone starts to learn machine learning from theoretical perspective.
  • "A Probabilistic Theory of Pattern Recognition" (Devroye, Györfi, and Lugosi, 2013) one of the underrated book on this field. Quite old but not that it is not useful.
  • anything with Vapnik name is usually good source. Quite a bit hard to wrap your head around if you are self-studying but for sure is a good read and can give you nice intuition. For example, data augmentation and Lie operator.
  • research paper from respectable conferences or journals like Neurips, ICML, ICLR, JMLR, etc.

For specific kind of model like Deep Learning or some field like Reinforcement Learning, I can suggest you the book for those fields separately. But these are generally what people use to get their foundation ready and to referencing stuff (not exhaustive).

Part of the point of college counselors is to put you into courses that are at your level

#

You should specifically point out that you are worried that your reading/writing skills aren't as good as you think they should be for college level work. That way they know where you want to start.

#

in the first iteration i've heard , in came in the form of a game show with 3 chest , one that comes with the reward , and when you pick a chest , it will open a chest that doesn't have the reward and is not the chest you've chosen

#

in the first itiration , it makes sense to switch cuz you have no new information on the chest you've picked , it will always not be openned

#

so it will stay a 1/3 chance

#

but in the video

#

inwhich instead of chests it comes in the form of wires , and wire that is safe is the correct option

#

it says that the bomb manufacturer informed you after you've made your first choice that one of the wire the dangerous

#

the difference in here that it is a possibility that the dangerous wire that they call out is also the one you've choosen

#

so if the one you've named is not the one the manufacturer named it gives you information that its more likely to be the safe one

#

making it a 1/2 chance

#

is what am saying making sense

#

in short , the fact that your picked is vailable to being rolled out , makes it that when its not picked out , it means its more likely to be correct

but when your pick is not vaiable to being rolled it , its will not give you any information on if its correct or not , cuz in all possibilities your pick will never be rolled out

This might read as a copy pasta, but it’s not. I believe we are living during the “Memeism”. In school, one learns about different art movements, which are art styles followed by a group of artists during some period of time. In the western world, you are probably familiar with the Renaissance, Romanticism, Dadaism, Pop Art, …, Modern art. In the eastern parts of the world there were similar periods of time were some art style dominated. Now, I posit that memes are the current art movement. It is an abstraction of what people normally consider art, born from the recent global interconnectedness through the internet. Paintings, music, etc are created to elicit some sort of emotion from the receiver. Memes do the same thing, but instead of being created by a single artist, they are created by a collective almost hive mind. What would correspond to a canvas in a painting would be a collection of memes. It has happened in the past for example with Andy Warhol, where people initially resisted ideas about what should be considered art.

I've been thinking how textbooks could be improved, and how they are still basically the same thing they were since their inception thousands of years ago, even though technology now allows for so much.

Like one of the great improvements in PDFs is the hyperlinks that allows you to jump to given points in the PDF.

But there's other things that I have not seen implemented that would be useful in a digital book. The main one I've been thinking about is a filtering system: Usually textbooks evolve from much more concise lecture notes, and they become bloated because the author wants to include every possible use-case of the book. So it would be useful if books had a sort of "mask" that would mask anything that isn't in the original content that was delivered as lecture notes.

Another thing that I think would be beneficial in a digital textbook is a hovering feature for definitions like in wikipedia that shows you the definition in a mini window.

Another obvious improvement (although this one would be much more resource heavy to do) is adding videos instead of images.

I mainly wrote this because I've been reading textbooks on Ebook Central, and despite them having so much money and almost a monopoly on online textbooks, the user experience and content delivery is incredibly crappy. Although maybe it has improved a bit since the last time I was forced to use it.

upbeat kraken
#

@wild lantern

#

Hey @wild lantern I understand everything now my question is that with polynomial that is degree of 1 and monomic, it can be expressed in some format of which I don’t know name, the name was in my book but a polynomial with degree of 1 and monomic can be expressed as (a+b)(c+d) where first is divisor second is quotient so my book says:

Eg: 4x squared + 12x+9 check if (x+3) factor

4x squared + 12x + 9 = (x+3)(ax+b)

Expand

Ax squared + (3a+b)x + 3b

The x^2 terms on both sides must be equal, compare coefficients: a = 4

The constant terms in both sides should be equal 9 = 3b so b should be 3

The trinomial would be: (x+3)(4x+3)

Since when this trinomial expanded is not equal to trinomial e it is not a factor to given trio

#

That is what my book says is that faster or synthetic division

wild lantern
#

This is a valid method.

upbeat kraken
#

Yes

#

So synthetic division faster

#

I can’t inspect as I have to show work

wild lantern
#

You can do this in general also.

upbeat kraken
#

Ok

wild lantern
#

Say I give you a monic polynomial p(x) and I ask you, can you factor p(x) into a cubic times a quadratic? Then you can let p(x)=(ax^2+bx+c)(dx^3+ex^2+fx+g). Since p(x) is monic you can let a=d=1 from the start since a and d have to multiply to 1 anyway. Now you can expand out the product above and then compare coefficients. Either you get values for b,c,e,f,g that works or you get a system of equations with no solution.

#

But the system you get could be REALLY hard to solve so you usually avoid this if possible.

upbeat kraken
#

Ok

#

So if you had to pick between the two what would you do, the book method or synthetic division

#

For time efficiency

wild lantern
#

#

If there's nothing else that works I might try it.

#

But you usually get a nonlinear system in several unknowns and that can be a rough time to solve.

upbeat kraken
#

Ok the. What would you pick between the book method or synthetic division if inspection not allowed

wild lantern
#

Idk I'd just try shit and see what felt fast/efficient at the time.

upbeat kraken
#

Alright cool

wild lantern
#

Often rational root theorem + synthetic division is also pretty easy

upbeat kraken
#

Yes

#

For finding if a expression is fully divisible into the polynomial expression I think synthetic division works faster for me

wild lantern

Sometimes factoring in general is kinda hard and there are often several ways to factor a thing that lead to the same result. So knowing a lot of techniques that you can pick and choose from is generally good.
