Have you played the ice palace
Have you played I wanna lockpick
no
God it's brutal
Subnautica is one of my favorite games ever
I learned to scuba dive because of it
If you are planning on getting it, don't read anything about it.
Or give yourself amnesia somehow before playing it.
oh you already recommended it
Subnautica 2 is coming out and idk if I want to play it in prerelease or wait for full release. I want to get the full experience without being spoiled.
whens it coming out
Subnautica can have my wallet
It's coming out in 2025 for early release, and I think there are plans for it to last 2 years before full release.
It is going to have multiplayer.
I already tricked my friend into agreeing to play it with me.
no. it's on the list now
have you played invisible inc
it’s interesting to see Y.Beer here
Hey when / at what level do students typically first hear about grammars and formal languages?
Their Sipser course, probably.
So outside of mit that would be what? Is a ‘theory of computation’ course common undergrad material?
Yes.
i've been here on and off
Hi
DROD
an oldie
What does this mean?
isn't DROD from the 90s
it's quite a bit older than the rest of the games we were recommending thusfar, it's good to see that
there's some good stuff from before the year 2000
The first one is
there are more?
Yes
Age of Empires 2
thanks for that. adding it to the list
added
I played football (soccer) for the first time in a decade today
So exhausted so old
The other guys are gonna keep playing for another hour 😵💫
lol
Why how old are you
old enough to get tired after 1 hr of football
i like this
It is a very good game

Which is more fun to learn, linear algerba or graph theory?
Probably graph theory; linear algebra just has more applications.
What do you mean by that? Do you want it to parse your screenshot as text or something?
highly doubt wolframalpha supports that
it does have some OCR functionality (https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=read+text&fileinput=ImageInput%2FOriginOfSpecies.png&fileinputtype=image&examplefile=1) but no natural language processing functionality
?
you can prob also just tell gpt to make a wa prompt out of an image
idk if theres a plugin that does that maybe
Use noggin

Wow. I've been approved. Joy to the world. Does one times one equal two? I have heard theories. I have my own theory. That maybe one plus one, equals ZERO. Consider it. They cancel each other out. Like on Candy Crush. I like the maths. Autists prosper. So... So, so quiet. Is it, maybe, me? I am the problem? Hmm. No, no. It is everyone else, I think. Except for you. Whoever is reading this. You are one of the good ones! Er. He answers in a foreign speak. Modulo? Sounds advanced. I only know arithmetic pretty much. I mean I'm joking, but not really...Haha, thanks! I like edits, else it is just too spammy. This would have been 20 messages! Then the math deities would have banned me! This is addition! I have mastered it! I like syrup, by the way. Just saying. Bit off topic, but still. Important. I use simple math to count supply lines. I was also counting peanuts. But I ate both, so now I have ZERO. I guess I won't be getting any awards about that. Haha.
This is the case for addition modulo 2 on the positive integers.
And no, it's not particularly complicated, as a concept.
Okay the edit conversation is kinda funny and creative ngl. ...You are welcome, I replied 😉
As for multiplication, no - not unless you're not talking about multiplication, as an operation, anymore.
I feel like I'm losing it.
Please just post normally, folks.

my house is surrounded by hills 🤣
Okay maybe not such a good investment for you lol
Although there's ebikes, but I've never tried them. Are different gears not sufficient?
The hills get less miserable the more you do it, it’s always a little miserable but it does get better
There was a like 1km pretty steep climb just outside my old flat and I can’t say I ever wanted to do it in the mornings but after a week or two it’s really not too bad

I want to be good at math, but i dont know where to start or how to... How would you guys approach this problem?
Im tryna start with studying conic section and stuff.... But as I study it, it seems to be launching all sorts of equations and stuff that i can even visualize yet understand their meaning and how they work
And now im feeling quite troubled upon how does "(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2" even make up a circle
I cant visualize. Sure, i can solve some given equation and turning it into a standard form of a circle, but i never understood deep inside what it means
But im lost of ways to be able to know it
Ive searched on reddit, quora and such, but it seems to not relate to my own story, where im rolling my eyes still thinking how that equation turns into a circle
How would u approach it then, if i may ask
Dam.
ah do you know how the distance formula works?
it's basically just Pythagoras
Yess, its like a way to know the displacement, no?
But then, how does it become a circle
Does it rotates?
try reading this
Like as the x moves, does the point circles around the center?
yes, and there are some advantages to thinking about a circle in terms of that
in terms of an angle
but, for this question
you should use the definition of the circle:
all the points that are r units away from another point (which will be the centre)
SO ITS TRUEEE???
That as x grows, itll go and just circle around the center?
Based on the equation of a circle?
But..... How?....
Try plotting points.
Btw, another problem i have is that, why is x and y in the same side of an equation?
Arent they supposed to be opposite of sides?
Also, what is your motivation for learning this?
Just out of curiosity ig
As i said, i just want to be good at math
Hence, understanding how it works
It helps if you have a concrete goal in mind.
this is the definition remember
like a circle is just all the points that satisfy this condition
you don't need a point to go around the circle
ah you've never seen anything like this
Math is such a big field, that if you aren't going to use conics, your time might be better spent in some other areas. Unless you have some other motivation for it.
I wanna know the reason for the equation(?)
yes up until now you've only seen $y = mx + c$ or $y = a(x + h)^2 + k$ or $y = ax^2 + bx + c$ right
southlander!
it is a bit weird, but it makes perfect sense
based on Pythagoras
d is the radius btw
Yess, im only used to that kind of equation
Im quite puzzled how does an equation where x and y is both at one side works
the problem with trying to rearrange the circle equation to get y on one side and x on the other
is that you can do it, it's going to be $y = \sqrt{r^2 - (x - h)^2} + k$
southlander!
but that only gives you the top half of the circle
the bottom half of the circle is $y = -\sqrt{r^2 - (x - h)^2} + k$
southlander!
so we should start talking about functions and how they relate to their graphs
a circle is not a function
a function needs to pass the vertical line test
one x-value ------> one y-value always
a circle is a relation
there are many many definitions of a circle
we choose different definitions depending on which one is more useful for our problem
@north topaz , let me get this straight, circle is not a function, no?
nope
that's correct
I was answering your question about "why can't we just bring y to one side"
.
yeah I mean just keep reading this until it makes sense
or watch a YT video or something
But we actually can, yes?
yes, but you need to break the circle in half
Godd thankyouu, i think im slowly getting it now
Btw, so in that way? I can be able to fully comprehend the equation then?
yes just do this actually
and come back to the image when you are ready
until you've convinced yourself
that you know why $d^2 = (x_2 - x_1)^2 + (y_2 - y_1)^2$
southlander!
after that we just need to change the variables to match
so d is the radius, d = r
$(x_1, y_1) = (h, k)$ and $(x_2, y_2) = (x, y)$
southlander!
So the equation isnt really about a function, or technically, its just not a function?
so $(x, y)$ is free to move around the circle
southlander!
nope, it's about a relation
x and y are related, but they do not describe a function
cause it fails the vertical line test
no worries!
we've done a tiny tiny taster of algebra 2 by the way
definition of a function
aint that for highschool math?

Wow, I can't believe brain-rot is from 1854, and has such sophisticated origins.
I guess I can use it during dinner conversations now.
we only know that a and b are positives numbers prove that
$\newline\frac{a+2b}{4b}\ge\frac{2a}{a+2b}\newline$
ILYAS
Get rid of the fractions, rearrange terms and you will get (a-2b)^2 >= 0 which is true
How do you genuinely get good at math
Or at least, how do you study before a final exam?
Used to think I was good at math, not anymore jeez
Whiteboard.
Like math
You should practice past papers, and explore the depths of math
Once you find a subject interesting, it gets a whole heap more enjoyable and you become eager to learn
okay thank u i get it now
I saw a chinese girl solve like 10 math examples every day for a year
Its basically like qith everything an obsession that makes you good
Well tbh compared to the average human we are better
But becoming a master requires you to go all in for years
Skim over all of the course notes and the textbook section paying attention to the parts you struggle with and then solve a bunch of problems
Do you still have to do hella writing classes if you major in mathematics?
I absolutely hated writing during high school and didnt do too well, only had a passion for math. Is college right for me?
you might have to write math
i mean like english language arts type stuff
depends on the university probably, check the degree requirements
The story I heard is that a dean didn't like the math department and wouldn't let them hire people and Dan Margalit was brought in to rebuild.

Do you still have to do hella writing classes if you major in mathematics?
I absolutely hated writing during high school and didnt do too well, only had a passion for math. Is college right for me? I mean like english language arts/essays type stuff
Depends on your country. USA forces students to take English writing classes.
I think communicating and writing is an important part of mathematics practice either way
how that's implemented will depend on each uni's program
should i like travel abroad then
but I for one would expect a math major to write proofs and maybe short reports of sorts at a bare minimum
Hmmm, that seems excessive to avoid writing well.
However, I believe some other countries have better ug programs in maths. But as derivada said, you should aim to write well.
For me it was 2 English writing classes. I also didn't enjoy taking them, but I learned some interesting things.
yeah honestly I don't think an entire English class is necessary
instead good writing practices should be taught throughout but thats a bit idealistic
I think it's because "international students" is part of the business model for many universities in English speaking countries, and a lot of them us don't speak/write English well at all.
I mean you are also forced to take gen eds lmao
Gen eds should be thaught at highschool
no I think there's some point to having those in university -- wider variety of topics and since you're an adult by then you're in a better position to engage with them
well theoretically
school is about getting the fundamentals down
I've also heard it helps subsidize less popular majors
But that could be an urban legend
Neither school nor uni get the fundamentals right sometime
I know from experience

normally the dept. giving the course gets some money associated to the cost x student of teaching it yes
idk the specifics in e.g. the US but that's how it works in most places here
What do they mean by ”respect to the y axis “ like do they take their hat of or what?? 🙂

I saw a series of videos where Donald Knuth would take student mathematical writing assignments and critique it (typesetting and wording and such) and I really wish such a thing was taught to everyone
These are video tapes of a class that Professor Donald Knuth once gave, entitled "Mathematical Writing."
For convenience, here is a playlist of all 30 lectures, in order: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOdeqCXq1tXihn5KmyB2YTOqgxaUkcNYG

Hello
I have a range of questions (not homework-style) on a book I’m reading through that would be fit to ask a professor giving lectures on the topic but I am a dropout so I cannot do that. Would it be fit to ask the questions in it’s appropriate channel?
Yes
huh that's nice
unironically a very nice watch, the linked handouts are also nice
Helloo
Knuth is so good
The goat
The greatest TCS person of all time must be someone else.
The greatest to this point in time is knuth
And maybe Leslie lamport that I can think of
Mmm
Give me some names to check
Maybe im wrong
why do you have a role that does nothing
Im watching a course on linear algebra, wondering where I can find practice problems? Since nobody learns math by passively watching.
It secretly does something?
it can’t possibly do anything
the name says it does nothing
the admins here are usually nice people i doubt they would lie about that
Not very moderators is not what u think it is
in a book
Also there is 1 user with mod powers that doesnt have a role that shows it
I shall not name said user
He is too based
any recs you can post in #book-recommendations
it does nothing.
i like anton’s elementary linear algebra
Okay thank you will check it out
Turing
Also honorable mention to Church tbh
Leslie Lamport is really really good. But I think Knuth both did more, and is much more likable as a human being.
Knuth is better just cause of the volume of his work
Its not Even a challenge
Its not that lamport is bad
It's just that knuth has done SO much stuff

@hollow isle idk if you watched pirates of the caribbean 4, but you reminded me of this guy lol:
I haven't, but very funny 😂
Also I'm not British lol
honourable is objectively the correct spelling
People care too much about american vs british spellings of words
Yeah English sucks because it's from england
Notice how I have the word censored in my "about me"
thousands of pr comments are about this when u want to merge a branch
least pedantic github programmer:
all github programmers are equally pedantic
(torvalds' ninth theorem)
It actually gives you full admin powers to the server if you enter a certain sequence of symbols akin to the Konami code
that’s why i have a linter set up in CI that rejects british spellings
that's a much better solution than what I had in mind
maintaining two separate branches/forks but it always inevitably ends in the american one declaring independence
@storm sage can u pin this?
I can but I won't

work = no fail
work(no+1) = fail (no+1)
so work = fail???
who can prove it?
@here
No = -1 clearly
You cant divide by 0
Not with that attitude
I think some people get confused by this, but if I understand correctly, there is no 1st overtone
So there's the fundamental which has a frequency h
And then the next overtone which has frequency 2h
And people refer to this as either the first or the second overtone
wow boot you are clever
I've realized I can keep track of how "mathematically stressed" I am by the amount of downhill MTB videos I watch during a given period.
https://youtu.be/UQ-F6BGQH6A?si=N4RBHeD-t7iWmMJ6&t=37
Here's my full race run down the crazy urban MTB downhill track in Medellin, Colombia! I love these urban mountain bike races because it is so sick to race through the streets in front of all the screaming locals! The city of Medellin was amazing and I was so happy to have been invited there. After the race there was a best trick event on the lo...
Like if it's some other type of stress, I will watch zero downhill videos. But if it's something related to maths, I suddenly start watching MTB videos on YT.
Also I love that Sam completely owns missing his front tooth.
I aspire to that level of confidence.

hey guys, I came up with a random question, and I can't solve it. How many inches are in 1 pound?
how many Elon Musks are in 1 Tesla
?
your question does not make any sense
ik that is the point

but I decided to try anyways, and I found via chatgpt that the average density of every element in the periodic table (covering everything discovered my mankind) in in^3/lbs to 2 decimal places is 6127.07, and I tried cubed root and cubing it but the answer still didn't make sense, coming out with 18.57 and 229,160,570,635.63 respectively and somehow this makes me think there might be some sort of answer but i know I am just wasting my time
0.5
density is not in units of in^3/lbs
Density would be lbs/in^3
And the average density of every element up to 118 is not 6127.07 lbs/in^3, it's 0.353 lb/in^3
at most 1?
Yes
good night everyone
your problem is you use the bad units
ik,
it is one of those things where it makes some people go "wait..." but I wanted to see if I could find the actual answer
Can someone advice me on smth
Guys, why everytime I study I feel like not squeezing my brain enough. It's like I'm only asserting 60% of my brain power?
The way I see it, doing well in Math, Physics or Chem has 3 tiers:
knowledge, understanding and application
Knowledge can be enhanced by simply studying and revising a lot, depending on your necessity and capacity. Understanding can be enhanced by asking yourself "do I really understand this?" and trying to explain a concept from a fundamental level, and then asking your teacher or watching a video (etc) to find an explanation. This is beyond only what is the textbook. A lot of times you may not cover things in class or in the TB that will be useful to you, so expand your knowledge beyond them when required.
Application requires you to 1) understand the topic, as then you will be able to know how to apply it 2) enhance your problem solving, such as by devising techniques to solve the problems such as https://www.nwtutoring.com/2022/12/10/how-to-solve-almost-any-physics-problem/ 3) Practice. You can practice topic questions on websites such as pestle https://pestle-ib.firebaseapp.com/ (which is free) or others.
Another important part is reflection. Reflect on where you're going wrong. What kind of questions are you going wrong in? Why are you going wrong in them? Is it because you're lacking knowledge? Because you didn't understand the concept? because you're unable to apply the concepts? Then, improve on that aspect by adopting a suitable strategy (as I mentioned above). I'd also suggest that you do a little bit of studying/practice everyday so you get into a habit of it, and will not have to grind in the last few months.

Interesting, well again thanks for letting me know. I feel so awkward asking for help since that happened. This really sucks I wish I knew I had something on my profile. Now I feel weird af asking. Hopefully it is really gone. I like contributing and I am a big huge fan of this server. I really respect it and grateful for it. I had a lot of great help over the years here and it sucks that happened. It really affects me. Sorry for that happening in the first place. Hope to regain my normality back.

ChatGPT o1 can’t do any meaningful stuff yet
What do you mean by meaningful stuff?
uni math problems
curing cancer
other academic stuff
Can’t do meaningful stuff since it can’t cure cancer? I guess no PhD does meaningful stuff either 😂
You failed to read other stuff I put in there
But yeah o1 is pretty useless rn
It can absolutely do Uni stuff. Have you ever used it?
Try making it do an undergrad math question then
Ok give me one
Sure hold on
To say its useless in math is ridiculous. I would agree with something like that like a year or 2 ago hahahahaha
It’s still not useful because it’s just a text predictor at its core
i cant share images here daam it
Duh
saying chat gpt cant do and never will do math problems is disingenuous
im not gonna use it but im sure its super useful for coding stuff. saw a video where a guy used it with latex
ok its done. Only thought for 6 seconds hahaha
the screenshot table thing seems very useful
It’s somewhat useful for formatting plain text with LaTeX
6 seconds slop
how do I send images on here?

or ima just paste it
cant i paste it
Read what the bot says
It can “do” math up to highschool stuff
Yes, Calculus is highschool
I dont care what the bot says. That bot hasnt been updated since 3.5 days probably
gpt 3.5 days
It can do graduate level math sometimes
i mean it cant do proofs but it can unreliably do computational stuff
But can it do them correctly?
sometimes
ima just send in dms
Seeing it ‘compute’ large numbers is #funny
actually it probablt can unreliably do proofs too
Then you’re violating the #rules
Some proofs of it are just so funny
And a lot of the time for me it's somewhat easy to fix the arguments.
There’s this neat trick of pasting questions into ChatGPT and ask your students or peers what step did it go wrong
Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it’s less obvious
yes we did that in our proofs class
im talking about how its saying it makes up stuff blah blah. Hallucinations will be daam near zero by next probably. Already low on o1.
Do you even know how GPTs work?
and how math works?
yeah obviously.
Then you’d know that it just generates text that sounds correct or human like
Why are you asking that? You think hallucinations are inherent?
While mathematics rely on precise logical stuff and such LLMs cannot reason
what if its just regurgitating some answer from online
Irrelevant. If it can do a problem it has never seen before, even if its on patter recognition, and solves it correctly, just like a human, NOBODY cares that its generating text that sounds like humans.
Wrong, it can’t “solve” it correctly because it can’t reason
That too for famous coding problems and famous textbook problems
what? obviously it can reason. artificial reasoning is what I would call it. How is it that I can make up a puzzle right now, about anything, and it will solve it correctly even if its never seen it in its database? Pattern recognition? Well humans do that too right?
Is there any bot that can have me teached with?
There’s no built it reasoning module, all of its reasons are just prediction of the next tokens
thats just being pedantic dude. its just unreliable, simple as that
No, read the bot’s advices again
For learning resources I’d recommend Khan academy or other YouTube videos
Isee thanks
Just doing more than 10% of the questions wrong makes it unusable
Nobody is going to accept GPT-written proofs because of its inaccuracy
for something that has a given answer, i think thats pretty usable. im not defending using chat gpt for proofs or anything
Sure, but does it think step by step trough a problem? Im not talking about 4o, just o1 specifically? Like is it thinking about its previous tokens?
Just predicting. How can it write a story without using a specific letter i asked for? This was previously impossible. How does it know know how many r's are in strawberry? It doesnt have much more training data, 4o still gets this wrong to this day, even tho o1 is just 4o, according to open ai, with reasoning abilities
o1’s “think step by step” bullshit is just it feeding itself relevant tokens for more of its answers
There’s no actual thinking or logical reasoning unlike those theorem proving languages like lean
You’re yet another victim viewing models at face value
Anyways, refer to this.

Read the last sentence
It outperforms experts, at least in tests for now, are you aware of that? In things like physics, chemistry, and biology. You can call it whatever you want but its obviously working, and its OBVIOUSLY going to surpass you, and me, shortly.
Like have you seen the jump from 4o to o1? Its huge
it outperforms expert
I doubt so, tests metrics are irrelevant against real-world research and papers publications
ESPECIALLY in math, coding
Yeah
Yeah, it’s just bullshit in those field, specifically
Also what was the answer to that problem you sent me earlier?
I’d admit it’s pretty decent at coding though
dude its better then you at coding just stop. how would you do at competition code forces? Like by end of next year you just wont compete, i bet money on it.
LA done right 2A.14
Try making o1 rewrite a whole 2500+ lines typescript API file then maybe we can talk
also sam has already hinted at 4.5 (or whatever else they release or demo in the 12 days) being better then o1. Someone said they had hit a wall and he replied saying "this is only the first day of the 12 days" hahaha
Genuine question. Do you think 4.5 (or whatever its called) wont be able to write 2500 lines of code? Do you belive this?
actually I wanna try that. even tho i think it will fail
What the fuck is 4.5
It’s not released yet
Give me the 2500 lines of typescript API file you want to rewrite
Why would I share my private codebase for Xnafu, wtf
you think ima hack you with o1 or what?
Anyways, just refer to !nogpt
Do you have any idea how developing web app works?
Do you think when 4.5 is released, it wont be able to write 2500 lines of code? Do you belive this?
Yes. o1 taught me actually
Irrelevant
Actual slop
Posting AI generated answers to help questions is also against the rules so
joking obviously since the limit is very high for now
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Its just a question
Do you think 4.5 will be able to write 2500 lines of code on release?
But yeah it won’t (as in without enough consistency)
fool
Even if it can, then I doubt 4.5 can rewrite the manyland.js @boreal sun (manyland reference)
Now you’re resorting to insulting people for no reason
mmm lets see how much o1 can write right now
So yeah I kind of won this argument
what part exactly?
You called me a ‘fool’
You have no actual expertise on anything and you just rely on AIs
true yes. And what part of the argument did you win with that? Makes me exactly 0% wrong or right about anything
You lost the argument by failing to use logical reasoning and instead resorted to insults
Wait I have some things I wanna do
You lost, Q.E.D.
Yeah this is cool as fuck
lmao
I did use logical reasoning, maybe i was about to after calling you a fool. But now I dont want to
Yeah I forgot a . at first
you lost, ⬛
Explain the logical reasoning in this then #serious-discussion message
no you fool
Yeah
I’ve always wanted to do this but they either leave the server or block me
or they just apologized
But yeah, moral of the story, TLDR or whatever kids these days call it
Don’t use GPTs to help people
i want to go
theorem: if you are cringe, i am based.
proof: suppose i am not based and you are cringe. this is a contradiction because i must be based, it is inherent to my being. therefore, if you are cringe, i am based. Q.E.D.
basically its pretty simple. If you think it wont be able to write 2500 lines of code, then it would mean progress has slowed down drastically, and the jump wont be as big as from 3.5 to 4o. However, this is obviously not going to be the case. More money then ever, power, expertise, plus others like at google where they said 100x or someting crazy like that.
So you’re daydreaming?
Also the amount of development into 4.5, longest to come out, with again, more power and everything I said.
Im just pointing out the obvious logical conclusion. I could have said the exact same thing about 4 before it came out after 3.5
Plus we can already see the massive bumps. I mean o1 is literally 4o, in open ai emails they sent out to people its literally called 4o with reasoning hahahah
You are fucked when 4.5 comes out hahaha. Well its likely it will be previewed on these 12 days since it was on the teams account as preview then removed
I’ll let you cook then ig?
what?
Just don’t burn the food
If im proven wrong and 4.5 cant write 2500 lines of code then i will admit utter and absolute defeat and will leave society. But im like 99% sure it will, obviously it will
It can but without a good enough consistency
Obviously
with good consitency
Obviously with good consistency
NO. You wont pay, obviously
A hand? or an arm?
mmm, maybe my testicle
Deal!
i look away for 2 seconds and now you guys are trading your genetalia what happened 😭
It’s a masterful gambit
I wont forget. I'll come back when 4.5 is out to prove how you were obviously wrong
Sure !
For reference, I also asked o1 the L.I. question and it gave me a correct proof (of the half I asked because I forgot to write iff instead of if).
Yeah since forward is pretty obvious
I left my book about partial ordering at my dorm 😭
Okay I asked it for the converse and it also gave me a correct proof, and much clearer than what I usually check for in here.
the only thing that is really annoying is the message limit. is it still 50 a week? i hope they make it at least 50 a day soon
Yeah, that's why I didn't want to ask it for the converse. I assumed it would get it right. But I asked just in case.
iuzu is delusional and catgod is at worst in denial and at best best disingenuous. obviously o1 can do ug level math problems, but cot isn't really thinking as we do it
obviously its not thinking as we do. thats why earlier I called it artificial "reasoning"
It processes each part of the problem individually rather then just jumping to the conclusion. It breaks down the problem, like a human would.
Anyways, I think both of you had something to teach each other, but were busy "winning the argument".
The most important thing is that using chatgpt to solve someone else's questions is against the rules. If it gets the question wrong, you are not only hurting yourself, you are hurting someone else with a bad explanation.
No one who uses chat gpt to answer questions here will make it obvious they use chat gpt hahaha
Literally saw someone get banned for that this morning.
MMMM. Lets say its an... 11th grade highschool question, a question where o1 will obviously get it correct, (unless you can give me an 11th grade math problem o1 fails) and they give the answer (without saying its chat gpt) and it does actually help them?
The point is, let someone that knows about the subject answer the question, regardless of if you can fool people into thinking you are not using chatgpt.
I think the danger of misinforming someone is much greater than letting a question go unanswered for a while. They can ask again at a latter point too.
What if you 100% have the correct answer even if chat GPT gave it to you? What’s wrong with not telling them it’s from Chat GPT when you know it’s correct anyway?
This is a rule edge case, and I don't want to comment on it. Ask ModMail I guess.
What's wrong is that this is called academic dishonesty.
Perhaps ignore all the bullshit about copyright, which protects capitalist interests, and look into what is the spirit of honesty
Hi
If you know it's correct then sure, but people who pull out chatgpt tend to not know
(but why ask gpt when you have to verify its answer anyway)
You didn’t do the work and even if you know it’s correct you’re not showing that you know how to do it’s, which turns into a problem where you say you know how to do it but since you never did it yourself anyways you can’t prove you know how to do it
Strange paradox
Damn you absolutely whaled on him. Dare I say: fishwhaled on him.
is there an example of a set that we know to be nonempty, without being able to construct an element of it? (obv you can construct that trivially with the set of irrational numbers x such that x^x is rational or a similar thing, I'm talking about an actual useful that one naturally comes across)
there are plenty of things where we know solutions exist but we cant construct them explicitly
Let f: A → B be a surjection and let S be the set of all g: B → A such that fg = id_B
say solutions to some PDE/ODE
In general you need axiom of choice to show S is nonempty
you often prove existence/uniqueness but actually constructing solutions is not possible
this is essentially the same problem you stated (most real numbers cannot be finitely described), but it comes up naturally
Set of noncomputable numbers
It also depends a bit on what you mean by compute
yeah, that's what the second part of my sentence is for, ofc you can shove objects you cant construct explicitely, I meant something that you encounter in the form of a set
naturally
yeah that makes sense
some solutions to optimisation problems as well I suppose
For most of these differential equation solutions, we can approximate them arbitrarily well
I kind of meant a more "classical object"
as in a set that comes up a lot, is nonempty, but where we have no idea of what its objects look like
Normal numbers
Well it depends on what you mean by comes up a lot
A lot of these non constructive sets are hard to reason about because they are non constructive
oh I totally forgot about those
yeah I admit that part of my question is up to interpretation idk myself
What math topics I need to be good at?
For CS, AI, Ml & Robotics
I would be grateful if you would give me best available resources for those topics as well
you don't need university level of math to do CS or robotics
depends on what exactly do you mean by "do" CS or robotics, I think robotics in particular certainly uses notions of 3D geometry, control theory and statistics
AI and ML on the theoretical side of things is statistical inference basically
so for any of these I would say a standard undergrad math curriculum including calculus, linear algebra and statistics would be good
Hello guys
hi!
is rereading a chapter 3 times+ frowned upon here? not for the sake of thoroughly completing exercises - but rather fully grasping the contents of what’s being discussed
i feel like i’m reading slower than others would but at the same time i think the breadth of what i’m getting from the book is a lot deeper
No it isn’t
Absolutely not
thinking of pursuing math degree, but gen eds and language arts english classes too hard for me
what should i do with my life then, i suck at writing and communicating i have cognitive delay
only passion i had in school was math
Did you write this yourself? If so, I think your English skills are sufficient to get you through college.
You communicated your idea clearly. Usually colleges have writing centers that will help you correct your writing.
One idea that might be of use is to try to write cleanly in everyday writing.
So, read your messages/emails/etc a couple of times before sending them; edit them if you find any parts that could be further polished.
That might help you get a habit of writing clearly, and you might also see where you fall short.
Is it, at all, possible to find parts to further polish? Sometimes, some writing just looks wrong but feels impossible to rewrite.
There’s a strict 2 pass rule if you ever want to be respected as a mathematician unfortunately
Simply git gud
your butt can't even spell 💀💀
in an LLM, or any machine learning algo, is any thought put into the size of the matrices they use? LIke the specific n for the nxn matrices? I know in general it seems like they just want "more power" and more GPUs and bigger matrices, but has any research been done on how the output changes by changing nxn to (n-1)x(n-1) or picking closest prime or closest power of 2 to n?
the size of the matrix is a consequence of a number of neurons and connections
which has been studied a ton
gen ed is so cringe
It took me a while before I realised this is sacarsm lol
How many passes before you understood it was sarcasm? 👀
Two

what are different commands I can use in help channels? what is command for (show work) or (no solution) or where is the list of it
can you tell me about transformer query , key and value matrices like how do we know exactly how keys and values are?
Can someone suggest me some good and interesting blogs on Vectors
This place is better for peaceful discussion.
How long does it take to receive the application portal after registering on the ENS official website?
The ddl is tomorrow but I haven’t received it yet
Hello
hi! welcome to mathcord!
hi welcome to my server

can you all add me on here I want my friend requests to go up..?
Hey there! As it doesn't concern maths directly, I'll ask in here: is somebody familiar with GeoGebra's JavaScript-API, and knows whether there's an existing typescript definition of said API? Couldn't find anything yet, and having intellisense working could help getting off the ground quicker.
You can also try #computing-software and https://discord.com/channels/268882317391429632/1213610885277421588 but your situation is pretty niche so probably asking the GeoGebra community will be more helpful.
Okay, I see - thank you! After a few experiments, I noticed how I only really need a hand full of methods, so I think I'm okay with simply keeping it on the level of JS. In any event, do you happen to know whether there's a GeoGebra Discord or forum I could pay a visit?
welcome to the server @proven oar
do any of you use mathematica? will it help me in differntial equations
heres a cool lil joke for you guys
in 30 years our "live laugh love" will be "deny defend depose"
disqualify, dislocate & dissolve yourself
that's stupid
like, 30 years is too long
this joke should be "in 6 months"
and most jokes of this format shouldn;t be "30 years"
the joke has been dismantled, dismembered and disinfected
in 30 years you can tell who was a gamer in 2024 because they spin around when they run, and you can tell who was a vegan because they walk
my dreams of being a comedian are gone...
hahaha
Someone teach me maths please
What part?
Any 🥴
Okay. Do you know what a number is?
Im doing statistics atm
Ah, sorry, I don't know statistics. Though if it helps, maybe you could specify that you are looking for statistics help the next time you ask someone?
It might assist you in getting clearer answers.
I don't!
That's alright, neither do I!
Hi Goku
Hi
The best answer I can come up with is that a number is a general kind of reality-portion cut-distingishment.
Appealing but lacks rigour
hi guys does anyone know where to ask calculator help questions? or should i even ask them in this server
(btw, answered in help channel)
Just a second, I pressed enter by accident before I could finish.
I think this is sort of the idea of a schema that’s talked about a lot in psychology and pedagogy
The issue there is that they’re malleable and personal, defining a number kinds suffers from this issue imo
You can have your own notion of a number, we all kinda know it when we see it, but pinning down a specific universal definition I think will always be impossible because it’s just too broad
But equally I don’t think this overly matters, for objects, as you put it, I think “you know it when you see it” is kinda good enough
I was mostly alluding to the fact that there is no commonly-accepted definition of the word "number" in mathematics. We have perfectly fine rigorous definitions of phrases such as "natural number", "real number" or "cardinal number", but no definition of just "number".
hi guys im new here btw, im in grade 9,
do u guys have any tips for Quadratic Equations, like any tips to not make any mistakes, i make few in the fraction type of Quadratic equations
If anyone has any tip pls tell me
what sort of mistakes?
hep me understand index sets
well give me a sec ill type
why cant i paste a image??
put it in #chill and link it
i highly recommend this book to anyone wanting some insight into the variety of “numbers” mwahaha
the table of contents alone is a trip
I love that it's #123 in the GTM series.
why and how tan theta changes to cot theta?
tan = 1/cot
u want proof ?
yeah, is there a triangle and graph to see?
how to get started with maths..though it's not my cup of tea i just want to pass my exams ..if i like i will continue further more
which grade?
Ik I didn't ask it, but I have similar thing. I'm 1st grade of high school in Poland.
Hey guys
Hi
I did my AP calc mock today, the FRQ section
Is 27/54 good?
I fear that I may have bombed
is it calc AB or is it BC
AB i think
you bombed
If memory serves me
are there taylor series
I may still recover in the multiple choice section
What is a taylor series?
Almost certainly needed
My teacher always says this class will need more studying than any of us have done before and yet I still chose not to study
Whatever the case, thank you
I see
but on the other hand 27/54 would probably be enough for a decently high score on BC lol
i think it's like around 60% counts as a 5, changes year by year
I see
I have a calc final in 4 hours and i cannot bring myself to give a fuck
Probably not going to do that well anyways so
Ughhh i hate to sound so self pitying but this semester went so poorly 😭
4 hours is enough time to do a solid review, try your best!
Solid snake:
Solid review:
Youre right….
I can do something
Wait I don’t get it
i made a lil incandescent light housing for my yeast 😤
hoping everything doesnt spontaneously combust this shit is very jerry rigged
me asf
i had a linear algebra exam at 8am, waking up at 1pm
did not feel like even trying on it
I hope it went better than mine did
I miss studying linear algebra
I wasnt much good at it but i really did like it, same with analysis
I was soooooo shit at analysis but i loved it a lot
Does anyone want to study with me?
anyone speaks arabe
your high school college?
WWho is the best teacher on yt
I want to go to college, it been few years after high school and my reading/writing level below average
how to improve
