Is this some sort of impostor syndrome?
Obviously you are qualified to be teaching these people, so this feeling sounds irrational
amy1 taking amc 12
I don't think so. My advisor is inviting me to meetings to get me used to how they go. Kind of like med students observing a doctor diagnosing patients. I thought I'd feel like that, but instead I feel like 3 kids in a trench coat. But maybe that's also how med students feel.
i thought 12 was done this year last week
12B is not done yet
12A has concluded
im so cooked
AMC is just so...weird like its not math
the most math part about amc is when you calculate how many answers you have to rule out before its more rational to take a guess then to choose f
BMO much better
guys i am in a dire situation
my maths teacher is sending solutions from chatgpt
💀
at this point i've lost all respect for her.
in my post mid term exam which was set by her, we had 4 wrong questions. and she won't accept that they were wrong. to justify it she'll send chatgpt solutions which are also, obviously, wrong. and she won't listen to anything else
guess what
she is the HOD
...i had a bad feeling
if you have a relation with any of the other teaching staff in the department you could talk to them about it, get some advice/assistance
unfortunately i dont. and tbh, with all due respect, i dont think any of the other teachers are competent enough. i've had a fair share of arguments with math teachers through high school (i am in 12th grade) and i've found out that for some reason they hate logic and common sense. and it's not just me. all the other toppers have the same problem
damn
my advice then is to just self study, switch off in lessons, get by bare minimum
yeah this is an insane situation
idk how feasible it is where you are, i was lucky to be a quite a chill school and i just did my own thing in maths when i alr knew what was up
your teacher should be fired
yeah that's what i've been doing since the past few years and get by with good grades
but every time this kinda shit happens its just so sad
how about in another department, like physics ? they (should hopefully) know maths more than well enough to see any problems
How does the head of department have to use gpt for everything and still put wrong stuff on exams
hmm that's a good idea. i will ask my physics teacher
exactly what i've been wondering
nice, hopefully you can get somewhere with it
How does that even happen
yeah
yh that is crazy, like surely theyve been teaching for longer than gpt has been around to be HOD
what did they do before lmao
I just don't get how like, someone who does that (if they are doing that they clearly can't even do math) has become hod like huh
Gpt is Shitt at maths
indeed
this is sad
bro my math teacher from last year was annoyed of us so she wasn’t teaching us nothing for a whole hour and she still wondered why we had bad grade
hello
it's especially sad to lose quality instruction because that wastes your time. i hope you learn the material well enough to prove right answers right and wrong answers wrong, lest you lose the material. i hope there's a way to restore unjustly taken points too. i'm sorry you're dealing with that extra challenge. that sounds difficult and discouraging. your teacher's acting weird,
and your feelings in this are valid and normal.
isn't there a way to prove text origin? what do teaching licensers do for this?
thank you so much for your concern
the problem is that the question itself is wrong
and to prove that, well
there was a question that said "vectors p and q are perpendicular and the angle between them is obtuse". i was so sure this was just an error, but i was shocked when she didnt agree it was wrong. she didnt even bother trying to discuss it. she just sent chatgpt screenshots. so at this point i just dont even want to argue lol.
when someone doesnt even agree that an angle can't be 90 degrees and obtuse at the same time, there really isnt much you can do to change their mind
yk if there is no grid or a Cartesian pland then technically one side will always be 90° by any angle you look at
what do you mean?
meaningless
True.
Cold XD
bro same
we complainted to the principal
and they sent us a feedback form
but we didn't give feedback because it wasn't anonymous
and the teacher had given us threat of reducing marks prior to that
🥲🥲
bruh
She said she can report any amount of marks she wishes to the principal😢😢
are you from indian subcontinent?
yes
this sounds like some shit my further maths teacher used to do
she would never listen to complaints either and somehow she was the head of maths
Same with me😔
technoblade pfp W
Yea, technoblade the GOAT. I just changed the shirt color from red to blue.
technoblade lives on
he is dead
TECHNOBLADE NEVER DIES
bruh
Sounds like my high school teachers back then
Awful experience
I'm sorry to hear that
Are the help channels not working or is it just me
sometimes they don't spawn
cause all Discord servers can have a max of 50 channels in 1 category at any one time
so we have help-forum to take care of the excess
but pls don't ask there it's a shitty experience
so like if you ever find yourself in a situation where there are no open help channels available
just ask in one of the subject channels
huh is it really
oh it's improved a lot
I remember when it was still shitty

I guess the only issue I could see with it is having your question buried or something
but even then plenty of people skim through all the questions
like with channels
I believe the world is divergent, while each individual is convergent. Drawing on the definition of a limit, I see each person essentially existing within a punctured neighborhood, where the various forms of consciousness in their mind converge infinitely toward a unified awareness. The infinite series formed by countless individuals, as it approaches infinite time, is expansive and divergent. In other words, while individuals contract, the entire world is actually in a state of infinite expansion, diverging on a macro level as individuals converge on a micro level.
In other words, each person is like an egg. The "egg" exists within a punctured neighborhood, with the eggshell ensuring the unity of consciousness, which you can think of as a constraint. The egg white represents the various forms of consciousness and thoughts within a person, and no matter how many forms of consciousness there are, they ultimately converge toward unity—the yolk.
Ok
I think I just answered 3x+1 (collatz conjecture), and I think it could be -(x2^x^2). am I right or no?
No
e x p l a i n
no
The Collatz Conjecture is equivalent to -(x2^x^2), reaching to -infinity because 1 can have a zero annexed to it, same for all the others, saying that you can divide, divide, divide, divide, divide, and it'll go so low that it will have so many digits, yet it can still be odd and even at the same time saying that it goes in that direction. Even though this doesn't make sense because this deals with integers, the collatz conjecture can have it's rules amplified to this concept because it can divide to a lower level to an undefined number of digits, temporarily leading to -(x2^x^2).

The only part that makes sense here is this doesn't make sense
you don't make sense
what part of me?
your brainstem deciding about this message and how it is incorrect, but my message makes more sense mathematically.
lmao
"laughing mathematically atrocious originalities"
This is very interesting. Do you think it could have applications to the Riemann hypothesis?
I actually don't know.
I'd love to hear anything you come up with
Thanks.
🙂
I joined this server because I like mathematical things, and that it's just that I'm bored
me too
i just joined
uhh ok
unfortunately this cant be true because of gödels incomplete collatz theorem
but it could divide over and over again.
even though godels incomplete theorem says that is is incomplete and such solution cannot be made,
no this is a different theorem
what the hell happened here
oh yea, no.
godels theorem supports what u are saying, but saying that it could divide too much, no.
what part of godels incompleteness theorems say that
sure we're not talking about godels incompetence theorems
wait i gotta do hw
n o t r e a l l y
well, its about 3x+1
and if it has solutions- or not
well i think there might be one- maybe more, but not a number.
no
guys i have a genuine question
i have a genuine answer
im taking real analysis i and ive been zooming through course, a few questions here and there but nothing that deep
and we learnt limit points and limit of functions the earlier day
and what the hell i lowkey cant solve any question?????
Many years ago, but yes. What's up?
ooo you got my mom's name
epsiolon-delta proofs?
Congrats, you're finally doing stuff that challenges you.
just wondering how i can prepare for it
real
yess like the definitions are surely a bit more technical
but i feel like i understand it
its a cute name hehe
Man it's practice, there's no tricks
You practice and you think carefully
a lot ?
A lot.
and as i was saying....
it feels wrong to google the questions
so i dont do it usually
but its been a while😭
at least you don't use chatgpt
I say just focus on a specific question, if after 30 min you're stuck or you solved it but it was rough, make a question channel asking about it #❓how-to-get-help and see if you can get someone to help or give pointers on how to do it a bit better
hahahaha maybe if i was doing cs hahaha
okie
personally I don't feel like I understand something unless I am capable of using it when working problems. Not saying you're doing this cause I don't know, but it's easy to fool yourself but actions speak louder than words if you can actually demonstrate something you know? It's just a way to help keep yourself honest to yourself without involving an external entity
youre right
I think a good chunk of analysis for people is learning to become more self reliant in their proofs
thank you
really random idea I had and I bet its flawed
what if a proposition can be proved "at the limit"
it cannot be proven by applying a finite amount of axioms or previous theorems but in the limit the "sequence of propositions" converges to it
This is kinda like what transfinite induction or proof by compactness theorem are like
Why is math such a growth industry or a future proof bachelor degree
I keep hearing that
Obviously everything in the world uses math but it has for the last like 50 years as well
I don’t see how a math degree is benefiting from technology growth more than say electrical engineering or software
I want to take math because I find it easier and more interesting than other uni subjects and because I’m vaguely looking at quant/financial risk as a career
But I don’t see how it places you better for any career besides that area
i got a c
i got a
I stopped reading after, congrats!
what math have you taken
Most advanced I’ve done is lin alg and calc 2
Gonna take real analysis and vector calc next semester
I’m aware that taking math “because it’s easy” is pretty inaccurate and it’s obviously gonna get much harder
yes, figure out if you like math or if you like computations
real analysis is going to be much different from math you've done so far
saying stuff like "i dont understand why math is beneficial, it's too easy for me" is not a good mindset
That’s not at all my mindset
I don’t find math easy, I find it to be easier and more enjoyable compared to say physics/cs subjects
And I didn’t say “why is math useful” I said “why is a math degree useful”
It's not...
it's a flex no lie
i would start by asking what you want to do after college
I want to retire after college
rlly hard tbh
most people retire before college
a mechanical hand for lost hand people
that exists tho
thats our main problem
everything we think of is already there
heart related things or vocal cords for voiceless ppls
@mild reef and management of price also meaning not so of higher price
Som sort of exoskeleton that would sync with Elon's neuralink. Just something paralyzed people could use to walk and sht u know
The cost is well idk, the expensive part would be the neuralink but the exoskeleton just needs to be fast enough to react to the link's commands in order to be functional
i wish
How to do you solve the equation 2(cosx)^3-9(cosx)^2=5cosx to find x? Specifically, how do you determine when the solution should include +2kπ or +kπ in the final answer?
first just solve the polynomial equation
why it is pi/2 +2kpi and not pi/2+kpi, but cosx=0, where x can be pi/2 and 3pi/2, the difference is +kpi, as cos5pi/2=0 too
In search of a friend like to chat about life and all and have fun dm if u want to be friends
Please help with my parabola..
Sure
Yeyyy
I'll pm you..?
Sure
cos is 2pi-periodic, but it also satisfies the identity cos(x+pi) = -cos(x), so when we solve for cos x = 0 the sign doesn’t matter and all shifts of a solution by a multiple of pi will be another solution
if you try to solve cos x = 1 that doesn’t work, as shifting by a multiple of pi yields -1
Let A=[1, 3], B=[3, 5], C=[2, 4] and D=[4, 6]. What is the set of (A U C) × (B U D)?
1: If you don't know the formal definitions of union and product you should go and learn those
2: draw a picture in the plane
3: this fits better in #discrete-math
<@&268886789983436800>
We must draw a picture (graph) to answer the question? Or is there another method, like think about the range numerically?
again this should be in #discrete-math
but my suggestion to draw a picture and actually use the definitions are just ideas to help you find the answers
you should not write your final answer as a picture, but a picture may help with this
just was an idea
again don't ask here, ask in the specific channel #discrete-math
what software do people use to make tests?
prolly latex if you're in uni, word if your in HS
Overleaf is a very convenient way to type LaTeX
well the real answer is that teachers either write their own questions
or borrow them from someplace else
So people really make whole documents in LaTeX? I've only been using it to make inline equations
yes
lol how do you think people write papers
I was imagining some clone of word
but ig latex is good
yes, they do
it’s not too bad if you’re used to it, it’s easier to write in than using word once you have even a little bit of experience
how does one practice latex
hm
what does being good at latex mean to you
pick some document you would otherwise create in a different word processor/by hand and make it in latex. repeat until proficient
tbh I never cared about latex, it's just a means to an end of getting math on the screen lol
its just that what I'm doing might be very quick, and it'll probably be long until the next time I need to write a document, but I also wanted to get better at LaTeX until then
because it might be too big of a time waste to learn what I gotta learn when the time comes
but I bet it'll be fine
Copy paste a template and adjust it to your needs.
yeah I'll start with that
Anyone have chegg? This assignment is due un 30 mins and im stuck
you will pick it up as you go. once you learn a command you will basically never forget it
you never really 'learn latex', you just learn enough for the current document
(which is pretty steep at first but gets easier once you do a few)
repetition legitimises
BASS
well you have an Eisenhower matrix situation
urgent and important I assume
and then not urgent but important
if it's really urgent you can just do it in Word right
can anyone help
i keep getting confused: kian and yak are standing 6240 feet apart on a straight road. they both spot a hot air balloon floating in the air above the road between them. kian looks up at the balloon and sees it at an angle of 65 degrees, while zak looks up and sees it at a steeper angle of 72 degrees. find the height of the balloon

guys do you know a song that goes like-
im thinkin over you i must be trippin
every word that was a lie ive been listenin
you've been tellin all these lies got me twisted
if you have the Google app on your phone
press the microphone button when you search
sing your song into your phone
hopefully Google comes up with the right song
if it's a Western pop song it should work
it is, and google didnt show
so this is the next step then
Well I’m probably not going to find an effective strategy for understanding and memorizing math by tomorrow
It was my new goal since I knew I probably wasn’t going to pass my math final or math class in general
I’m aware of the consequences (some of which I caused) which lead me to not being able to study in time
I feel stupid, like I have a loser gene in me that’ll stop me from succeeding at anything, but fuck man…I still want to be good at this so bad
I still believe I can figure this out
I don’t give a shit about passing
I just want to understand math
So I’m not gonna quit
If i can finally stop being that scared kid who freezes up and distracts himself with anything he can find whenever he finds a math problem that confuses him or the work gets too
complicated then I couldn’t care less if I get an F in math for the rest of my life
It’s not about passing this class anymore
It’s about making sure every failure and all the pain they caused me wasn’t meaningless
Some people are really into it
guys hill 1 is 4810M and hill 2 is 22.5% higher, how long is hill 2?
@fresh comet I heard something funny today. Deltoid's uni rejects courses from UWaterloo. There's a guy that transferred from there who finished analysis. He was required to redo calculus AND analysis
What's wrong with the courses there?
Bureaucratic issues
What kind of bureaucratic issues? Why would other unis reject courses there? 😭
They should have a calc placement exam so students can at least skip calculus
Doesn't exist
Like even if u have masters

very bad frfr

Hi can we talk bro
Oh my god who fucking cares get a new bit
I’m struggling in algebra because I don’t have a good basic algebra foundation what do I do
I’m in highschool
Sure?
practice
how can you lack an algebra foundation? It doesnt get harder after grade 6. Algebra is logic put into math notation. As long as you know how to add, subtract, divide, multiply, and deal with exponents youre fine.
It’s finding the GCD
reply to the qyestion so i can see what ur talking abt
does this stand for something??
you cant just tell me to find GCF without an equation or explanation of what GCF is💀💀💀
It’s solving quadratics through GCF
that’s all I can tell you

or dont u have a question
ur just generally struggling?
Generally struggling
Yes
ill go to a chanel and tag u
Ok
-0.5 is in the first 0.5 from 0, like 0.5 is in the first 0.5 from 0.
So both -0.5 and 0.5 should be rounded to 0.

Speaking of this
I want to start from zero
Where I first started to struggle in math which was in middle school
Where can I find math for that grade? I don’t remember the material we did back then
what the fuck does that mean
@mild shuttle this should be helpful https://www.online-python.com/6FcwueI7Ey
It's not funny anymore. Hell, it was hardly ever funny.
Your entire online presence here is whining and bitching about Waterloo. You're the only one who finds it funny after months of saying the same shit over and over.
Grow up or at least find something new to talk about, please, literally anything other than Waterloo.
chill man
#discussion message
they're joking here for example
also they only have 10 results for UWaterloo
ryx do not chill man
so what
what if she had 50
if you think someones annoying just mute them
YOU PLAY GTA
YES
there are 50... 10 + 37 + 3
oh okay I see now
@weak sierra I currently work for a startup, making nuclear detecting robots.

YES
Geiger counter with wheels
that does seem annoying then
This has also been consistent on other servers. For months.
WATH
I can make that with legos
Between Vero and Deltoid
you've ModMailed about this right
Lol
I make a roomba that drives around sites where we contaminated the ground trying to make nuclear weapons trying to find the parts that need cleaning up.
except it's not really a roomba, but like a pretty big robot.
So you do like important stuff
radiation proof robot
Everyone this @quick beacon guy does stuff
do you have fun names for the robots like boston dynamics does
I do environmental cleanup. Your view of its importance is very dependent on how you feel about such things politically
He has a ..a life for something
typical maths dude personality ngl
We originally called it "Radio Roomba" internally, but we couldn't use that for obvious reasons. We name the prototypes after the moons of saturn.
hahahaha
roomdio
nice. our labs are named after planets
but when we built more labs, we just moved to boring names i think like faraday cage #4
Exoplanets?
dwarf planets
Just call it the decomposer
51 Pegasi b
Disintegrates is the term used by Nuke Es typically
I mean, decomposes kinda gets the point across maybe?
Fair but I was being serious here tho
Than why they use disintegrates
Because it's what they use. Why do they use Bq instead of Hz?
they have the same units, technically 1/s
What's the full form of Bq?
Bq is disintegrations/second
Just because they can
It's average and stocastic
so clearly there is a distinction
I might be wrong but Hz is for frequency?
maybe it's similar to how decomposes can get the point across, but it's distinct from disintegrates.
Hz is for frequency yes.
You can say "Because it's what they use me"
You are scientist or something
Make me a video
On why we use disintegrates
Not decomposes
no lol
I'll make you a video on GF(256) and its use in RAID6. Once I get it done, and that's only because I'm making it for everyone
what kind of radioactive material do you plant?
I'm fond of planting cobalt-60 seeds in the ground. Just giving it away to anyone and everyone like a psychotic version of Johnny Appleseed.
It's the gift that keep on giving (you cancer.)
cobalt? No. It decays into Nickel and gamma
Ni is nickel right???
I see. I can table of contents
You can table of contents periodically
indeed
Different startups tho right?
What happen
Died of radiation poisoning?
Before even answering the question

I bathe in radiated water
It's what I said
Water radiating what
Heat?
Gamma waves
?
You use uranium as a bath bomb?
I think she died of radiation poisoning too
So if you have been exposed to radiation and you talk to me
You die
Cool
I am starting to believe it might not be the radiation.......

Bro thinks this is 2015
you are here to sis?
Are there any mathematics students here who have managed to get into an Engineering job after graduating?
I am at a very difficult point of my education right now where I want to start working. My goal is to work in energy/mechanical engineering. But one part of me thinks that it will be impossible to get into it as a mathematician
any ever? probably. does it happen commonly? likely not
engineering does require a lot of specialized skills not covered in a typical math undergrad beyond just math
One such example is CAD, but let me know more if you can think of any
my plan is to take a course on CAD, and then start to make my own projects
damn im cooked
I feel like If I somehow get lucky and get just 1 job, then I can become qualified through that job
Software engineering there are a lot, I’m not sure about mech
As said above it’s probably some but likely not many
I managed to get into an engineering job without a degree
But my story has a lot of bleak parts to it and I won't guarantee you'll get a job if you do what I did
Bro can’t just say that and leave us hanging smh
Mysterious ahh statement
can you not do a masters in engineering?
I did and I will leave you guys wondering
your skillset as a mathematician is super helpful for engineering, especially if you end up doing some job where you use a lot of math
depends exactly what u wanna do as an engineer
thats what they be saying
A lot of it boils down to who do you know
True I guess
I only know my fluid dynamics lecturer xd
I will go insane if I stay in education
ok so ur about to get a bachelors in math?
yes
i read “fundamental dream”
if you really want to become a mechanical engineer or an engineer that works in energy, more education is likely unavoidable
unless you can get an engineers license without an engineering degree
hi anyone free to talk
i usually come with a price
A price of what
negotiable
depending on what u can bring to the table id say
if so we can tell you which channel to put the question in
I'm free to talk to i guess
ahhhh I hate missing the bus because it arrived and left early
I felt that
when train leaves early in Japan
moshikatta gomenasai, our train depattedo saaty sekonzu aaly

real story btw
this actually happened
Okay second try I am arriving 5 minutes early at the bus stop.
Trains in Japan get delayed very frequently because of jumpers, but leaving early is very rare. In 5 years it never happened to me.
that's sad though
don't trains have those platform screen doors though
There was one day where 3 people jumped at three different connections in my journey which was very wtf
let me guess it was like in April when school starts again
Not many. Only the biggest stations. And even in those (Kyoto station for example) not all of the platforms have them.
damn I thought Japan would be more advanced
I think this was meant as a joke, but actually you were pretty close, it was in March
wow I guessed right
Basically all train stations have doors here
indeed
Where do you live
in a place where our metro is more like commuter rail
so no platform screen doors sadly
Metro? Commuter rail? I see no difference
I just see both of them as trains
What's the difference

Damnit! Return bus arrived and left early too! This is not my day.
Are you doing postdoc in Japan?
where could I find mathbooks that were used in middle schools in 2014-2015?
I want to start math from zero
at the point where I first began to struggle
Nop did master's in Japan, am doing PhD in aus
If in the USA, I am sure it varies by state, but they are probably all similar and you can find them in Amazon. Just google middle school math textbook and you should find them. I remember they were these gigantic textbooks
like so
most American textbook cover ever
How prevalent is the use of MCMC outside of academia?
It's pretty useful throughout
i'm using it for my thesis and my tutor said it's pretty widely used in industry so I was curious
Hi everyone
What is the content inside this maths book
umm no, where are the guns?
don’t forget the soaring eagles

Is it bad that i started studying for college gen chem mid term
17 days before it?'
the first time i did 30 days and this time i slack off so bad
most people only do 3 days or fewer lmao
this guy
yeah
you're good what are you even gonna do for 17 days
yeah how long are you going to spend for the final lmao
no that's @fresh comet
who changed name
Hey! I'm in need of some advice
I wanna learn Precalculus on my own. I have completed an intermediate algebra course by myself beforehand. My dilemma is whether I should follow Professor Leonard's Precalc lectures on youtube or Stewart's Precalculus textbook? Or perhaps both?
Textbooks I think are usually better for self study, and whatever you don't understand, use a video to learn again
Ah interesting approach. I was kinda thinking the other way around. Like go through the lectures and use the book only for the practice problems. What's the reason that you prefer the textbooks?
Just personal preference
Textbooks kind of make me figure it out myself and I find that when I learn somthing myself, I tend to not forget it. On the other hand I forget things from lectures
I see. Well I'll try out working primarily off of the textbook first and then use lectures to clarify concepts if needed as you suggested
Thanks for clearing it up a bit!
If you think you learn better from lectures, go for it
In the end, it's whatever way helps you synthesize information best
yes textbooks are dry and boring but they really just give you everything to learn and I like it that way
I don't know to be honest. Cuz I have only learnt through lectures and never a textbook
Give it a try
What kind of pre calc do you want to learn
As in to prepare you for calc or just learn whatever else there is that you didn't learn yet
My goal is to learn calc, so yes whatever helps me get there
And I really wanna learn trig cuz it severely screwed me over in my high school exams so I wanna have revenge 😂
You're in college right now?
Not yet, I'll be starting my undergrad in 2026 after a one year preparatory course in 2025
So I just wanna get my fundamentals strong and learn as much as I can on my own before preparatory course starts
How would you say your algebra is?
Pretty good I will say. I dislike inequalities but other than that I'm quite strong in it
I need help 😬
Thing is you don't really need pre calc to go into calc
!help
To ask for mathematics help on this server, please open your own help channel or help thread. See #❓how-to-get-help for instructions.
Pre Calc is usually a review of Alg 2 and just goes through ways you can do things you learned previously in new ways
Ah ok that's good to know
So it depends
Since you want to take pre calc to just take calc
Just start calc
I have a textbook I can send give me a moment
Oh thanks man! I'll check it out
How does it compare to something more popular like Stewart's Calc?
I still wanna do precalc or at least trig so I fill in any gaps in my knowledge but knowing that precalc is similar to alg I won't dedicate too much time to topics if I already know them
I never heard of it
lol I thought that was a really popular one
you can learn new things in pre calc like hyperbolas, elipses, aymptotes(you need it in that in calc), strong factoring and solving equation skills
Trig equations, unit circle
Yes that'll be really helpful
I basically don't know any trig. Whatever I had crammed into my brain to get by in high school finals is long evaporated by now
You should definitely review trig
Basically when you learn calc, you will learn whatever you do and apply it mainly do polynomial functions and ratinal or radical expressions
But then you will always apply what you learn to trig too
Gotcha
My goal is to get precalc and trig wrapped up by end of this month so I'll focus on that for now
My actual high level goal is my degree in information systems engineering
Which is kind of a mix of compsci and electronics
So I wanna be well prepared for whatever math that degree entails
Best of luck
Thanks
Do you know anywhere I can read the books online free?
Libgen
ah heads up, discussion of piracy is not allowed on this server
I suspect name dropping shadow libraries falls under that
Literally 1984
directly linking to pirated media more specifically
does scihub count as pirated media
yes
absolutely
do chemistry's optical isomers remain isomers if they can be superimposed in 4d space
just plz place into calc
its for the best
ik someone who placed into the worst math in undergrad (totally not me) and had t o start taking major classes sophmore yr
learn it now
eh like i can graduate on time perfectly fine
but its just harder and may effect my gpa
so i plan to finish the fall of my grad year instead of summer
still 2026 tho
¯_(ツ)_/¯
What r u gonna do with that paper

Your username is not appropriate for this server. You're muted. When you change it you can dm the modmail account to be unmuted.
thank you @wild lantern
whats up
I guess this is an alt huh?
Kinda defeats the point of mutes/bans
Realistically, you're not using the username I wanted you to change...
So I guess you basically did what I asked in a roundabout way.
I'm curious what username they used
Seeing this old math again feels sort of humbling

Layla seems to have taken my advice about banner pictures, but she's no longer on the server. Was she banned?
good lord what was your advice
Basically to use a higher level math text.
layla left for some reason
she'll be back dw
A mathcord without Layla is not a mathcord that I want.
Nethuja-Gunawardane
I am able, but not willing, to make a pun.
thought she was being too unhinged, so left before she could be banned

Oh so it was layla
Damn now we missed 2 important mathcordians

For promoting PMA

I mean, the book itself is not a crime, in fact it's a great book
But it should not be promoted to the unwary
i have seen people say that the multi var clac part was kindo weak in the book is it true?
It’s the perfect book for someone who’s already taken an analysis class or two
I kinda agree with that without having read it
I did open the book once to check out something and it was easy to read having been years after taking analysis courses
no way pre pink era dami
It’s perfect if I ever need to refresh my memory because it’s a terse list of theorems and definitions with outlines of genuine proofs and great problems, I think self studying analysis for the first time from it would be a hellish task
You’d know the stuff inside out if you managed to do so, but there’s probably just so many more efficient ways to spend your time

How do people in Discord say about Mathoverflow?
I am a little pissed off today. I used to enjoy reading Mathoverflow so much and today I just posted an problem on academic integrity I encountered during research. I received some good answers actually. Later the moderator found me and said it was irrelevant with purely mathematical questions. Then he deleted it. Fine.
I just didn't agree this problem to be irrelevant but I editted it and reposted. Somehow the moderator is now on me😅 Every time I publish it, he deletes it in one hour. I mean, bro, seriously?😅😅😅
I mean, really, I don't think integrity is something irrelevant to research. I explain many times but they just keep deleting.
have you read the rules for posting
Of course yes, they first time said I was irrelevant so I changed it. But they then just keep deleting without reason.
Really, I was receiving some good replies but somehow they just cut this conversation off. 😅
If the moderators and current researchers really do NOT THINK INTEGRITY IS PART OF MATHEMATICS... This is indicative of what we are facing.
Honestly this is why a lot of people don't use MSE/MO
I enjoyed it so much but it seems I just saw one side of it.
it's on the user's side to guarantee that their question is relevant to the forum, yours sounds more apt for e.g. Academia Stack Exchange
for its purpose I think MO is decent, one can find some interesting insights at times
MSE not sure, it was better before when it wasn't as active and hence not as strict
imo
Along with the whole AI policy
Is there a way possible I can calculate sample size on my ti-89 titaniumc calculator
mods can't ban users for posting AI generated content? is that it
I don't follow the meta or announcements that's the first thing that came up lol
Been told that there is no such function on ti-89 titanium but to know the formulas for sample size for either mean or proprotion
Do you have the stats list editor application?
I believe it exists on that application, I used it during my 10th grade year in highschool and it seemed to have everything.
Yes I do
Sorry
I just think the only way possible is to put the list of numbers and try to find the n value from there
if you're reposting a deleted post to MO what do you expect
post it to the relevant stack exchange instead
it's not relevant to MO, those posts don't really belong there
hello
There is an academia stackexchange for questions like this, that's not what math se or MO are for
hey
just saw this now, it's exactly it wow
did you find it in OEIS or made it yourself?
i used the first few lines from oeis and had to find a pattern myself 😭
yeah I was going to do that too but had other things come up in the meanwhile, so you saved me a lot of time, thanks:))
The Cleo era is when I was active on MSE
oh no online-python.com
Hi
!worms

it was the quickest i could find on a whim. is there a better online sharing way ?
what i do for running code online (on my school chromebook) is complicated but SO MUCH BETTER
im ready
i mean what i do to share code is upload the .py lol
do you know html?
yiss
and yeah i usually would just send the .py but i figured i'd give it a way to eval as well rq
yeah for that i just download it and open up mingw and do "python3 Downloads/filename.py"
right i didn't know if they were on mobile or whatever
but also running arbitrary code from math nerds
on mobile i just open it in notes app and paste it into online python lol
💀
also this is my program that runs python programs in a browser
some kind of custom pyodide wrapper? very noicee
yeah
also, it bypasses cors and therefore can be used on file protocol and school chromebooks
oh that's slick haha
!dogs

there is an academia stackexchange this is more relevant to fwiw
When you find a good question and you want to do more like it and you ask chat gpt to generate more questions but it absolutely makes up rubbish what do u do
How do I make it not do that
be better at math gg
Uh just don't use chat GPT?
You can’t, it’s just simply not how chat GPT works. If you want more problems of a similar nature you’ll just need to look for books or problem sets online yourself
hi guys, i've asked a question but no one had answered it yet, how do i make sure that people see my question
Hand flyers
Leg earthers
Head swimmers
1- I would post it in a help channel, not the help forum. 2- I would make it as easy to read as possible.
Guys, if you are solving a question paper, and there is no solutions key available, how do you check if, your solution is correct??
Sry, if this is not the channel for this
where is the help channel
You could open a help channel asking for people to check your work. But I'd limit the number of questions to check to a minimal number.
Oh ok, so solve a few, and then ask for help? Is that how you do it?.. thanks
Not generally allowed to buy people on account of the whole bodily autonomy thing

Considering her parents are a doctor and lawyer combo that think through things very logically and democratically, it’s always been perplexing how her sisters ended up that way as well but she believes that the Holocaust never happened, let alone believes economic & racial inequality is entirely made-up
Oh well
Very informative!
bro got the defective one
She is physically attractive and an incredibly hard-worker, don’t get me wrong

I didn’t say anything about the brains department 😅
nah bruh this is one of the wildest things ive read in this server and thats saying smth
You will get a feel for when something is right. If you read over your solution again and all steps are logically sound, it must be correct
For computational exercises, you can plug back in
For proofs, you need to get this 'feel'. Afterwards, you don't really need anyone checking
Think about if each implication you make really is true and justify it for yourself

What topic would I go under to ask about commutation relations etc?
can you be more specific?
never heard that term before
Are you talking about physics by any chance? Like operators in quantum mechanics?
It’s the only place I’ve heard specifically commutation relations used
Yeah, pretty much was just wondering if there's some place I could go to ask about it etc. Not really getting a formal treatment etc in my course atm.
the physics discord would probably be better, check in #old-network
I remember essentially none of it unfortunately
Something about the canonical commutation relation is about all that’s left
Ah ok, I thought it would be like calculus etc - and used outside of just physics; but maybe it is more a physics-centric topic then.
Yeah; so far I've been handed a relation and told "if it equals zero; then you have satisfied the condition for simultaneous observables" - "and if not; ripbozo you can't know it simultaneously".
if the observations commute then they don't affect eachother
I mean there is a more general notion of just commutativity and it leads to a lot of interesting algebraic notions like the Weyl algebra or the quantum plane, these are rings which essentially satisfy the same commutativity as derivatives and position and momentum respectively, but for a more physics based take you’d be better off in the other discord
Thanks; I'm not so mathematically strong right now so I think you're correct and this wouldn't be useful for me right now.
I’m an ex-physics student who jumped ship to maths and I remember having exactly the same concern when we first did like very basic intro QM because the relations just kinda came out of nowhere and we had to memorise them
I presume they come from somewhere and you learn that in a later QM course but I jumped ship prior to that
It’s something to do with Fourier analysis if I remember correctly, related to Gibbs phenomenon or something? Idk there’s definitely other people better suited to answer lol but it’s a fair question
Yeah; I will say I'm nearly at the end of my course and I haven't encountered any rigorous definitions etc. It seems very superficial; and that scares me because I've been doing quite well so far by simply "following the recipe".
Are you in your first 2 years of uni? Physics is basically just a busy work degree for 2 years because you don’t know enough maths to actually do anything
💀 final year
Well, that’s just rough I guess

@untold shard if you got 390 then you may have calculated it wrong? The padding should always get you a number between 100 and 125 assuming it works how I'm guessing, which is dependent on information you didn't reveal about the problem.
konichiwa
No I mean to make questions
Yeah exactly: don't use chat GPT.
How do you expect chat GPT to give you good math questions?
Does anyone know how to study?? I’m doing my igcses next year and I missed a lot of school in my year 10 bcz of personal reasons so I’m super behind on my work :( is anyone free to be a study buddy of sorts or give me tips how to study? I’ll need it because I’ll be doing online schooling next year
(Free to dm/ping omg I need help so bad)
Ask general questions it helps sometimes like how problem like bl a bla is to be approached
Either way you’re going to read books so knowing where to start is an advantage
I've found it gives a good answer roughly half the time
the other half it's useless
You could also just ask here, where actual human beings reply, many of whom are very knowledgeable and experienced in math.
ok but can most humans here draw a horse using ascii art
I would rather ask chatGPT how many letters are in the alphabet
They said 26 while there are 11

There are 11 letters in the alphabet.

Third time this week the bus has arrived early and left me behind. This time I was at the stop and the bus simply didn't stop
depends on where you live but here, the bus has no obligation to stop
you have to stand up and raise your arm
so that the bus knows to stop there
I stood up but didn't raise my arm...
lesson learned
I don't know if it's like this where you live
it sounds like it is though
Canberra
oh right you're Australian lmao
keep forgetting
yes that's why
Canberra also has a reputation for being super car-centric
Do the buses leave early where you live too? At least I know I am not the only student here complaining about that.
oh don't you have an app
I am an international student
that tells you when the bus will arrive in real time
They disabled it when I got here to change to a new one. It's not all bad since the bus has been free in this period.
Track real-time trains, buses, ferries and light rail in Australia with our live transport tracker map. Stay up to date with alerts and upcoming departures.
there's also Transit
another app
That one shows no real-time info. It might work next week when they enable the new payment system.
Thanks for the resources!
I swear it does
