How many different game states of Mancala are there? Assuming 4 seeds per pod to start
too many to count
if you have this board for example, you can use stars and bars
there are 14 holes so you can separate them using 13 bars
and choosing the positions of the bars determines how many are in each hole
so it should be (48 + 13) choose 13
,w (48 + 13) choose 13
maybe not all game states are possible but around this amount
So 6.566 trillion is an "upper bound" ? (and it's less than that)
I guess
yeah like if you flip the board 180 degrees, you technically don't have a different game state I guess, so we've double counted and need to divide by 2
depends if you count whose turn it is though
meow

higher!
meow
Hi @everyone/anyone
hi!
Hey bro! How u doing?
I'm doing alright, you?
I'm doing all good

Yeah this is definitely an overcount, there's no way a lot of these are possible
The rules of mancala are pretty particular
If you picked an arbitrary game state, the probability that you could figure out a particular path to get there seems very low
Off the topic, Has anyone received a private message from a stranger/spammer from this server?
yes a few
if you feel as though they are causing you a problem, dm @polar panther
a particular one?
and yes, dm ModMail if you deem it a problem
Some constantly sent friend requests and when i asked them, they never reply
And other weird/suspicious behaviors

I'm not sure if this is a problem, i just feel it's weird and don't know why did they do that
idk, some people just have strange tendencies, if it ever becomes a problem remember you can always message modmail
I just block them and move on personally
To be fair, I also have received several friend requests from random strangers in Discord. I had received a friend request from some random stranger who forced me to accept it, and eventually I ended up removing them from my friend request and moving on.
It is really challenging to believe that they really care about us whilst they said so. Seriously, fuck these kinds of people.
Honestly, I should have just blocked them for overstepping my boundaries.
How tf higher has honorable
Even they cannot even help people like me.
the real question is how tf i don't
i'm neil
i'm goated
My parents have taken me to therapy, however I got throwned out by 2 therapists. It all happened since my homeroom teacher encouraged my parents to take me there. They could not help people of my severity. :p
what does this mean
How tf higher has honorable
are you saying I'm dishonourable?
Even my parents cannot help people like me. :p
I'm questioning your honorability @fresh comet
I see
I have been taken to the so-called "conversion therapy", however I got kicked out, too. :p
so I lower the average quality of honourables?
I think that might be accurate, actually
Ugh, autocorrect did me dirty.
Sadge
But, congratulations on your promotion to Honourable.
thank you
What of it
the opposite is true
None of your business
Ok
I'm just bullying higher because I can

cause I couldn't tell if you were joking or not
I dunno
you wouldn't know. I know
but i kinda understand how you feel
im going to grad school feeling very unqualified
Skull
Guess you are going to a good uni?
Because otherwise, you might rather feel overqualified. Like me >.>
yeah it is kind of a good university, at least to me
im genuinely surprised they want me but everyone there has been so supportive
Sounds like imposter syndrome!
Yep
It's okay, even I am also a grad student..
Well anyway. My fault for not studying enough

I wanna quit my 300k job and go to academia fr
You guys are making me jealous
NOT FAIR
No way
bro youre making me jealous wtf
300k?!
Yes.
wow
what is it that you do if you dont mind me asking
Robotics engineering
👀
Grind hardware, electrical and mechanical and I'll give u my job
I don't like it it's really soul sucking
i see
At least in academia I can see myself doing something fun even if I'm getting minimum wage stuff
Well assuming I end up doing something I like with a nice advisor, otherwise it's worse than my job
hmm yeah

No need to ask “Can I ask…?” or “Does anyone know about…?”—it’s faster for everyone if you just ask your question! See https://dontasktoask.com/
can yall explain square roots to me
im so confused about them and i need to know them for 7th grade.
how old are you
latests #events post says "due to popular demand"
i never saw a demand
maybe cuz i only hang out in #discussion and #chill
Maybe it was in demand in French mathcord
Or as DarQ would say: en grande demande
Really depends on the text..... sometimes hours, sometimes days
for how many pages do you mean?
i just wanna know whats typical for people who study math
this question has no meaning, it will vary person to person based on many factors
even if you found someone with the same background, who has the same amount of time to put towards reading the book you still will not take the same amount of time
some people will find some subjects easier than other, for example
the moral here is that what everyone else is doing doesnt really matter. you can only do what you can do
I've been stuck on a single page for months now (I need to know what a differential form is to proceed)
that being said, there have also been cases of me skipping pages because they didn't contain anything new for me
I took a course in linear algebra 2 this semester, we got lecture notes and were expected to read about 7-10 pages per week. In total, it was around 90 pages
But it depends on the lecture notes too, how talkative the author is
In these, it was basically just lemma - proof - definition - theorem - proof - ...

hey guys, please say hello to me!
Hello
Opinion: Dont get a degree unless it is something that is field specific like actuary sciences or architecture.
It has been very difficult to find full time office work with a math degree, I didnt have the best grades or go to the best college, but I still finished with BS. Additionally, nearly every position that I could get starts at a similar pay to unskilled labor; And given that four years of working in nearly any field full time in the US nets you a gain of over 100k, and four year schools often cause more than that, youre realistically looking at a difference of several hundred thousand dollars at the start of your career. Once you factor in safe investments like the SMP 500, the pay is extremely comparable so the only benefit might be job satisfaction or the experience of going to college.
Anecdotally, the experience of going to college to work extremely hard and be stressed all the time, just to be stuck applying for positions with mediocre pay in fields like IT and insurance, is really disheartening.
Any recommendations for advanced math servers?
This one
presumably you wre talking about the US - do you think this is the same in the UK?
(I'm halfway into a maths degree already, can't back out diamond hands)
I dont really know the job market well enough over there to speak on it. If I were to guess it has the same issue but not as bad @naive lagoon
@neat lintel you just have to help many people
oh and do i just ask mod?
uhhh
better not ping them
you just gotta help many people and you'll get it someday
Hi higher
I went to a dermo today
He was absolutely shit tbh
He prescribed me Accutane on my first visit
And told me to not read up on side effects because every medication has them anyways

But yeah I'm not taking it
I'm taking Zindaclin instead
Which is just a gel/cream with an antibiotikum in it
Apparently that helps too
If not it doesn't matter anyways, it doesn't hurt
Yes
Any secondary state school maths teachers - British curriculum
guys anyone of u do IMO?
just got the news that i'm off accutane as of today
awesome!
IT pays out well for the money u put in
The winged, central figure is thought to be a personification of melancholia or geometry. She sits on a slab with a closed book on her lap, holds a compass loosely, and gazes intensely into the distance. Seemingly immobilized by gloom, she pays no attention to the many objects around her.
i love the "personification of melancholia or geometry" ahaha
the engraving is Albrecth Dürer's Melencolia I
Is it wrong that I got super-schadenfreude from this? I'm not an ideologue so I am not going to call these idiots 'traitors' but at least, in my eyes, when you elevate an adversarial nation in your mind soooo much that you just have to get an admission to a university there, and the government of the country that you love "OH SO MUCH!!!" leaves you to dry like this, and you actually cry as this country supports a GENOCIDE!! I just love this picture of this girl crying sooo much! "Mental distress" uuuuhhh lol. lol lol lol. You deserved it, good girl. You deserved it. Go study in an Iranian university next time. If you need to learn something that the university does not teach, google it.
I was like these idiots once, and I wanted to study abroad. These degenerates actually congeragate on apply-aborad.com which has franchised to other languages too! goddamn, why do these people love the west so much?
How am I 'wrong'.
What the fuck are you talking about
mod ping
: 3
you did literally ask -- but these students have nothing to do with the actions of their governments and are mostly just trying to get an education
Why an education in the US?
To ask for mathematics help on this server, please open your own help channel or help thread. See #❓how-to-get-help for instructions.
Also I'm an Iranian buddy.
You're just proving me right.
That promises of West are hallow.
And these westoxificated idiots are better off studying here.
that has nothing to do with what im saying?
but yeah im not going to engage with this anymore lol
Ok buddy. I don't think you have the intellectual capacity anyways.
LMAOOO
this is proof that its bait btw ^
Because in many cases the education in the US is better than in many other countries? Because local universities get filled fast? etc...
i mean some people are just like that lol, it doesn't always have to be bait per se
but it is fucking funny
@true zinc The first statement is admittedly true. I am not going to even compare Iranian unviersities to US ones in terms of quality.
But the second statement is false. Google IAU.
i think its pretty easy to tell when someone is being intentionally inflammatory but could just be me
it is hilarious
oh for sure they're being intentionally inflamatory, i just distinguish that from bait
People like this make me irrationally angry
bait is when you're specifically starting a discussion to lead on to some other point imo
@tawdry pecan I said you don't have the intellectual capacity because you called me a 'troll'. Astrid engaged with me and I replied with civility.
note: insulting people like that isn't civil
calling people a troll, when they are trolling, isn't being uncivil either
How am I 'trolling' when I am stating my true beliefs.
ok that just means you like to respond to people lengthening your conversation
yeah this one turned out to be a pretty boring troll to poke
Ok, look, there's no shortage of universities in Iran. I've been to college in Iran for 9 semesters.
*9 semesters, 3 were vocational college
If you wish to learn any skill you can do so in safety of you own nation. With your family.
And not in a country that actively hates you and belittles you and denies you visa.
ok that's a point worth adressing -- there's more to universities than learning skills
in fact, learning skills can usually be done without universities
If you say 'experience', that's how I convince myself that I did not waste 9 semesters across 3 majors lol.
(though universities do also offer a standardised pathway in which to learn skills, which is often helpful, their purpose is more than that)
some universities are seen as more prestigious than others, but your point isnt nullified by that
I have a short temper but if you seriously wish for a proper response:
First of all: Wishing for someone to cry and feel bad for wanting to go to MIT and being accepted to the university, which involves AFAIK a quite difficult process, is just sad. I pity you.
As far as people from poorer countries in general coming to richer ones to go to university, it's simple, many of these countries with stronger economies have better universities, and so more people want to go come for a better education.
As far as Iran is concerned, due to Iran currently being so isolated from the world stage, there's less chance for their universities and education being improved.
As far as the genocide claim is concerned, the government of a nation's actions do not always reflect how students or people who live in a country feel. In this case, the situations in the middle east are extremely contentious but I cannot get into a long-form discussion over it due to the server rules rn.
How does the West stealing away Iran's human resources help Iran break out of the 'poorer country' loop?
Also let's not pretend that Iran will ever be considered 'first world'
It's your club.
There is a large amount of geopolitics I'd need to unpack for that, most of which could be bordering on the server's politics rules
why are you using second person pronouns as if we’re personally responsible for this
Yeah I know what they are. You don't need to tell me what they are.
The first world, second world, and third world terms are outdated and originated during the cold war. First world was always US and its allies. Second world was the USSR and its allies. Third world was everyone else.
You are responsible because of your inaction.
What the fuck can I do? Go protest on my college campus? Sure but that's not going to do shit and I might as well have my ass arrested
I don't think, even if we go by the 'developing'/'developed' moniker, it would still matter.
We have like 3 years before global warming caues social collapse
Frankly, it really wouldn't, due to how US-centric the world has become
That is an extremely narrow world view
tcc this person seems to be arguing in hopes to win as opposed to learn information about a situation
Win what buddy?
this is best demonstrated by the initial message they sent
jfc
@true zinc I'm just saying these standards are too Western-centric for a non-Western nation to ever qualify as the 'better' of the categories.
i dont even know what the point of debating that is because the terms are descriptive not prescriptive
I don't know the linguistics term and I'm still learning philisophical terms from canceades.org
But to explain it: These terms are 'dyadic' and not 'monadic' if it makes sense
Iran will be a developed nation only if West believes it is one
Remember that these indices such as GINI and GDP and what have ya are compiled by Western nations.
And they win tremenedously if Iran's image is not that of a 'functional nation'.
Remember when they pulled a false flag attack last August
Caused riots.
The best way Iran can make any progress is to discard West and go be friends with non-western countries.
that's probably true but unrelated to anything else
i reccomend you abandon nationalism and just focus on your own life tbh
i wonder when this strategy was tried before
@serene rain One way Iran is different is that, were I a 'nationalist' I would be on a watchlist by Iran's own government. Islamic Republic hates the Iranian identitity and nationalism, especially pan-Iranism.
well yeah but my point is you're focusing a lot on iran and geopolitical issues way bigger than you
Well to be fair my focus was on youth indiscretion.
it sounded nationalist to me
You are responsible because of your inaction.
and i say this as someone who lives in the uk and has studied german history and language pretty extensively, i know what nationalism sounds like
I have studied computation and logic 5th edition too but that does not make me a computational logician 😉
cool…?
ad hoc central
Studying something does not qualify you to opine on it
what does that have to do with your main pont
like actually
my bad
what does then?
hi metal
could you ban this troll pretty please
.
Seriously it's not worth it.
brother you started this
gone
utterly banished
im ngl this is super confusing but i do find some of what they said kinda disturbing so im just going to mute them and ask the other mods what all of this means
oh they left?
still seem to be in the server for me but maybe that's just discord being silly
I made this, dunno where to post it on this server

Feel free to comment, criticize, or give ideas! I would be thankful of it.
Behrang nevii off the bubblegum kush
hello cat and category theory community!
well, not enough cat-avatar people, so probably still set theory
curious, what alternatives to peano arithmetic are there? or perhaps my question is misconceived?
There’s heyting arithmetic which is like peano arithmetic but intuitionistic logic instead.
honestly aside from heyting arithmetic (and much more limited theories like preesburger arithmetic) there really isn't much. The natural numbers are really foundational in a lot of ways to actual mathematical practice
way more so than sets
maybe i'm confused about what happened after godel incompleteness theorem
thanks for the reference
(also, shouldn't counting numbers be more foundational than natural numbers?)
in most terminology the natural numbers and counting numbers are the same thing
peano asserts existence of 0
I wouldnt call this nationalism tbh. I think people from colonialist nations have a hard time recognizing the difference between nationalism and not wanting colonialist influence in your country, so i dont blame youy, and he did say some wierd shit lol
But yes, my goal is the same
to help bangladesh discard its western controls
and become great in its own right
Donut without frosting
what does the link in your bio do
Idk I copied it from someone and was too scared to click it.
i know what the link does
that's good
it's safe
oh that's good
Hi hi.
Some of those who have studied biology have heard of feedback loops. Like an example of a positive feed back loop is a mother giving birth. The contractions are driven by hormones which cause the contractions which creates more hormones to intensify the contractions, until the baby is born. But other examples exists.
My question is: what maths studies feedback loops? And is there a lot of research going into this kinds of maths?
It’s dynamically systems right? Cuz there are discussions of over damped and under damped systems and critically damped systems, etc.?
Or maybe I have made some pre-assumptions about this topic.
(Feel free to ping if there is a reply. I would most grateful for a notification regarding an update.)
Sounds like dynamics, yeah
definitely dynamics
TYTY.
the iranian guy above is right
That's not a very dynamic answer
@visual breach Please do Abstain from laughing. I'm being serious.
Hi does anyone knows a good way to learn the first courses in university online?
there are three resources that i like, one is the youtube channel professor leonard, https://www.youtube.com/professorleonard, and for practice problems and additional stuff use paul's online math notes, https://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/
for stuff that you do before calculus just use khan academy
also, if you are a nerd then you can use MIT OpenCourseWare
what
WHAT
do you want to tell me that site contains all MIT's online courses?
for someone named super afk, you seem to be at your keyboard
https://ocw.mit.edu/ here is the site, you can search
when i was in high school i put something in the feedback section and they reached out to me and did an interview
haha just got my third keyboard
which was really fun
holy shit
did you get into something?
no, they were just looking for more feedback, so i talked to them for about a half hour about ocw
and now the site looks like this
it's very different from when i started using it
yeah i applied and got rejected from MIT out of high school, but i don't think i'm really that upset by it
so I can get every course MIT offers online for free?
well, you can certainly get enough of them that you'll feel satisfie
d
like there is so much on that site
I think there is only 1%-3% admission rate
nice
yeah idk the numbers anymore, this was back wehn i was obsessed with university admissions, but honestly you will turn out fine no matter where you go
as long as you continue to do cool things no matter where you are
I hope so
I like learning
learning machine learning
it's mostly educational videos and articles but recently started looking for something serious
math specifically I want to learn for uni
and maybe also for DS
nice
is DS dynamical systems or something else?
data science
dark souls
lol
oh nice data science is great
hlo
hola
Probably you were the only person posting something in the feedback section
yeah that's probably right. i like interacting with the world in cute ways
How did they find out about your e-mail
Can you sign in on OCW?
i put it in the box
Ah
Would somebody maybe like to learn math together every wednesday I am from Germany it´s 5.43 pm for me. Iam not the best at math and something like a math buddy would be nice. (12grade).
hello there
hello
wrong answer, should've been "General Kenobi"
Yeah dammit missed the chance
how are you doing?
not bad not bad, wbu?
bwomp

get active to send embed perms
starts doing jumping jacks
alrighty
Nice same
what are you doing right now?
listening to music

what kind of music are you listening to
i like sungazer (the band)
rn, zombie nation
very nice
:3
I love machine girl
also the band
or an artist i guess
drumer is only on lives
i will listen later
Nicer dicer, is it something like a metal band?
Ah okay, I mostly listen to metal bands.
Do you have any song recommendations?
I recently got into melodic metalcore
i did too tho
i mean
i still do
but not mostly
i can help you
but not with this one, don't really like metalcore
can recomend children of bodom tho
as smth melodic
Well I'm open to everything
I change my favorite genre every few months
im more into death metal, deathcore, thrash, groove
well i never have one
i just listen to what i like
I'll see if I like them thanks
I find a new genre and tend to listen to the same song on repeat for hours until I find something new
from this can reccomend Rings of Saturn, Infant Annihilator, the true Mayhem, Immortal, Suicide Silence, Cannibal Corpse
You know the classics? Like Metallica, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Pantera?
I've listened to everything from phonk to electro swing to lofi to metalcore
Tbh I haven't even though they are so well known lmao
Well i listened to a lot of metal before, but now im more into electronic and experemntal stuff
like breakcore, IDM
i don't really know much of experemental genres
mostly bc artists to whom i listen are not that popular and old to have a genre
like Machine Girl
Yeah same most of the time
and electronic music is a lot more open than metal or even rock, so it's hard to make genres
like in metal it's distorted guitar, drums, most of the time bass and vocals
I don't know if you'll like electro swing because it's very different to what you usually think of when you hear electro but I think caravan palace is pretty good
in electronic music it's whatever you made on your synth or wherever you want
gonna listen rn
oh so it's this one
Do you know polyphia? They play the guitar entirely without lyrics
i don't really like that, but objectevly not bad
Ye I agree that electro swing is pretty niche
yes, and i know a lot of bands and artists who make instrumental metal :3
i would say the opposite, it's kinda pop-like, which i don't really like
https://youtu.be/UbQgXeY_zi4?si=oMJOKXtfIfusIGuR if this is what you talking about
Fr? I don't think so at all. Which song did you listen to
Ah yeah
Thoughts on this? https://youtu.be/TqHAJjpDlY8?si=p_c717RzkVnKX0Jf
https://youtu.be/L9FklP51Bp0?si=4upLyTuyvUo0Unsr i'm into smth more like this
well a little bit more interesting, but my point stays the same
Hm not exactly my kind of music. I prefer to have more melodic variation
well
i think i have smth for you
Do you know plini?
https://youtu.be/2Ym5BoEXQAA?si=pN4saei7Vi8irQEx this is pretty cool
nah uh
Here's a song that has some breakcore elements https://youtu.be/aGsy2-MAkTM?si=CGq0Jv-H0MvY1GWM
Kinda
Listening to it rn
Not my kind of music sorry
well yeah, that's midwest emo math rock(it's actually the name of the genre, i do love it btw)
aslo sound fire
That's the name? 💀
Lol
yes
This one's similar https://youtu.be/5bUR_lreEpU?si=mY9PM6KPwfjkbmZ5
It gets a bit loud after 2minutes so just a warning in case you're wearing earphones
https://youtu.be/p4TDYdtOg8A?si=7__GsCcq_drCQgv5 you should try this then
bruh, my ears are already dead from what i listen to
Same lol
The fact that I listen to music 12h a day doesn't make this better
I've literally noticed my hearing getting worse
there are no breakcore elements tho, still very good
Yeah hence this #serious-discussion message lol
Ye this is good
it's maths server, what did you expect, not-nerds?
I should learn more genre name terms smh
this one has tho
breakcore elements i mean
not-nerds is not a genre fyi
I noticed
:3
I'll listen to it later :3 (i already have 100500 tabs open)
this server has gd emotes?...
They're metalcore though (I think
)
Nah I have nitro
Because it was gifted to me. I'm not rich
oh ok, we're not doomed yet
+respect
nvm we are
BRUH, i literally made the exact same meme
Wait fr?
I send it every time category comes up as a topic
💀
only with calculus -> linear algebra -> abstract algebra -> category theory -> algebraic topology
Ohh ok
If you made that exact meme this would've been cursed af
algebraic topology should be after imho tho
cause you need category theory for it
Yeah but you could also argue that you do CT alongside it
The only correct way to do CT is by doing it in tandem with other results
and if im not mistaken is the reason category theory was born as independend field
Yeah true
the only correct way is to study all of maths put Hilbert pic here
I just feel like a lot more CT stuck with me after I did some algebraic topology
I think students should learn CT as early as possible but everything they learn should be linked to something else like LA or Algtopo
i mean it might be true, imma be honest i know like 0.00001%(i know the diffinition of homology group) of algebraic topology and 0% of CT, i just recently started learning maths sirously in the first place
For example you could do natural transformations in linear algebra
Same I only got into math like 2 years ago
And I only know the CT that can be directly applied
To other math of course
i know a little bit of calculus(i know strictly dervitives and not stricitly integrals), linear algebra(i know what matracies and vector spaces are, and how to derive matrix multipilication as if it's projection between vector spaces), abstract algebra(deffinition of the group and first isomorphism theorem)
and that's pretty much it
phew code red abort
I've already forgotten a lot of calculus
At least calc III
im form russia btw, we don't have that numeration system, we have different names
so
i have no idea what calc i ii and iii are
I'm from Germany and I'm just calling it that because it's the standard US name
Calc I is derivates and continuity I think calc II is integrals and calc III is multivariable
I think
Not entirely sure though
well i just finished calc i then, also im pretty sure continuity comes first
bc like, every differentiable function is continious
but not the other way
We do parts of I and II in German schools excluding continuity, sequences and some integral rules
and i think also limits and strict function deffinitions
I don't think limits were ever introduced at our school
They were just suddenly there to define derivatives
well ours too
And then never talked about again
🤯
We only did sequences in the Vertiefungskurs
We didn't
No multivariable ofc
we have worse, we just had a table of deribatives and like "well, remember it" without any deffinitions or explanations
We're going to do that too I think
💀
Tbh I don't think they should teach calc in schools
They should do basic proofs
And algebra
Fax
agreed
Knowing how to prove something is so much more useful than learning random formulas off by heart where you
- don't know where they came from and
- you'll forget them within a month
We do the proofs quickly, the teacher doesn't care how many of the people follow, and then do a lot of exercises
Ye same
but i think like axioms of real numbers at least, and epsilon-delta deffinition of sequence limit
Sometimes we don't write them down, just read it in Lambacher Schweizer (our book)
Bro just doxxed his Bundesland
Why dont u just remake the school system then 💀
.. idc?
🤯
Why would I care about doxxing my Bundesland lol

Idk lol
absolutely, that's why i love maths, you don't have to remember anything and relay on intuition, just straight up facts and logic
Well you do have to remember a lot of stuff
But I still agree
i wouldn't agree
field axioms
Well you don't need to remember them seperately
But still, you need to remember axioms for these algebraic structures
A field is just a commutative ring where every nonzero element is a unit
Yeah and whats a commutative ring, ...
You do have to remember some stuff
well, there are not that much of them imho, and they're pretty easy to remember especcialy when you work with them a lot
A ring is a group under addition and a monoid under multiplication together with distributivity
Ye hence this#serious-discussion message
Yep
Ye I know I know I'm just saying
Well
There are some things that are easy to forget
Even after using them a lot
Homotopy extension property
I can't seem to remember that one
well they are pretty intuitive imho, like group is the basic structure with operation that you can do anything useful with, ring is a commutative group with multiplication that has distributivity, field is commutative ring with 1 and has inverse element for every element besides 0
Can't just skip monoids like that
Fun fact. The group being abelian follows from distributivity
No one cares about monoids let's be real
fax
Grothendieck completion go brrr
wdym?
In k theory you get a monoid and then you basically say "fuck monoids I'll force this to be a group"
Two sided distributivity to be clear
Consider (1+1)(a+b) and expand it in two ways
This also works for modules/vector spaces
i also have no idea what monoids are, in my textbooks groups go first(like breafly in the beginning, they come when group theory is serious)
You just ... make up an inverse element?
Groups without inverses
Kinda
well, that was easy
You form the product M×M and then do an equivalence relation
That's how you get Z from N
all elements have inverses. Yeah? What's you source? My source is that i made it the fk up
(a,b)~(a',b') iff there is an element c such that a+b'+c=b+a'+c
In other words (a,b) is like a-b
And you may say "hey can't I just cancel c on both sides" no because you have no inverses
This is very similar to localisation btw
So Z=N×N/~ because an integer corresponds to a-b where a,b are natural numbers
And the equivalence is there to ensure that for example 2-3=5-4
Now in k theory you consider finitely generated projective modules over a ring R with addition defined by taking the direct sum
This obviously doesn't have inverses
So you just add them using grothendieck completion
And this group is called K_0(R)
Example:
The name fits
Any projective module over a field is just a vector space
Oh and isomorphic modules are equal in K_0(R)
Now I ask you this: what is the only isomorphism invariant of a finite dimensional vector space?
Should I say it?
dimension?
Ye
yeah makes sense
So the isomorphism classes of projective modules over a field are isomorphic to N
Because the direct sum just adds the dimension
Then the grothendieck completion is just Z
Hence for any field K we have K_0(K)=Z
Each dimension is a natural number
Basically
There are other groups such as K_1
But I only know a little
You can also compute K_0 using other methods than the one I used rn
Oh and K_0 can also be made into a ring using the tensor product
sounds cool, why would we want to make it into a ring though
Idk lmao
Why not
Ring theory is better than group theory
well let's try making it into a field then
field theory is cool too!
Ig but ring theory better
Because ideals
And more general
Where did you learn about K-theory?
Where I first heard of it or where I learned it?
Where you learned it
Ah
This guy writes really informally for some reason
It's a bit weird
Not rigorously?
Nono he does
But like
Little things like "it's"
Instead of it is
Which books don't usually do
No but this doesn't sound as wild unless you actually read it
You completely read through it?
Dunno not too long. I read through it twice. The second time was faster
Maybe a week
But idr
58 pages in a week?
Alright
You've got the PDF?
No I was just looking at the Springer site
Did you take any notes or just read it
When I did the exercises
I only take notes if something is hard to understand but it was pretty readable
But like
I have the feeling k theory is basically just turning shit into a group
Because
Dedekind rings are also just rings where the fractional ideals form a group
Everything is made into a group
Groups are just better
Seems it's a pretty recent area though
Opened up 35 years ago
Yeah very recent
But most cool stuff is very recent
Category Theory was only invented in 1945
What about the former
They were the ones that ended the war
It has applications to algebraic topology
Which I don't know
But
It is a homology theory
There are topological k groups that satisfy the Eilenberg steenrod axioms
So you encountered it in a different book basically?
Yeah
Alright
I reread the first chapter after someone else talked about them
Because I had a question relating to that
Which was basically about composition of functors and which information we can gain from something just being in the "image" of a functor
Every time I ask this dude something he responds with random gibberish I don't understand lol
This is my only reason to learn math
To understand these people
You have a personal question-answerer?
Not really
I just know very smart people
Did you meet them at mathememes?
woah
We did a contest a while back in April
Must be a really funny guy
He was a mod for some time
And ye he is
He left for personal reasons
But I'm still in contact with him
Is he a PhD student?
I'm talking of landlord in case you've heard of him
The rich guy
whos landlord
A guy from a different server
oh
Also known as jam/biesnejuil
hi chat
Lmao
Nah lol
Yooo
Hi
how's everyone today
Thoughts on the rhotic
I'm learning icelandic, so trivial to pronounce
even tho I can't get it right all the time
Had to get that pharyngealised labialized unvoiced alveolar approximant in there
Since when
oh wait I didn't notice the pharyngelaized labialization there, oh god that's evil
unvoiced alveolar is trivial
That's how it's pronounced though
It's not pure
In most English dialects

hello Kepe, Chrizzl, Ryan
Hello 🤯
Hi Higher!
integer prime accumulation
hey higher
International Phonetic Alphabet
@true zinc what are your honest thoughts on this information #serious-discussion message
Well I've been for about 6 months or so
Ah
Are you using any app like anki?
yeah
Has your semester started yet?
Why are you learning it
Hello
Have you studied for our exam yet
The Scheinklausur?
Yooo

Ye
Nah not really yet
Yoo buddy
Me neither
how do you edit the preamble with the bot
I'm in Hungary anyways currently
I'll start 3 days before that
I don't have anything with me
Thoughts the international phonetic alphabet chart
Sounds like a plan
And like 10 other languages
Wait what?
But Russian I actually could speak well
So true
Which languages can you speak
Well I forgot all those 10 languages obviously
Um ok ig
I can speak German, English, French and Russian
What is your honest opinion on the ipa
German, English, Hungarian, French, Spanish for me but I think I forgot a lot of French and Spanish
Same
So you chose Spanish as an elective in school?
Yeah
I think I remember you saying that
NWT would've been much better
No opinion for rn 🤐
Idk why I didn't choose that
Yeah
Imagine not having IMP
Everyone in my Vertiefungskurs had IMP
Tbh IMP is just the temu version of VK
Everything you do there you do in VK
Except for some coding and physics
But I only care about math
@vernal token what music do you listen to
Uhh
I don't really actively listen to music
But I like whatever is on Antenne 1
Lmao
Buhe
Beughe
Buhre
Cringe ngl
Like when I'm in the car
Yeah but it's more like a passive decision
I literally listen to music the whole day
This is not an overexaggeration
My earphones are right next to my bed
I only take them off to charge them
You do math while listening to music?
~~You're sitting in lectures while listening to music?
~~
Well I mean I'm on discord while in lectures lmao
But I don't listen to music no 😔
Gets called on
Very sad
Discord notification
We should do our lectures on discord ngl
I do when I want to fall asleep and then I just lie there
I’m guilty of doing that in a few classes lol, my proof based linear algebra class was sometimes not as interesting
Yeah fr fr set up a server, make Dr. I. the mod, make some cool emotes and stickers, then just talk in #360643390594875392
The absence of music is uncomfortable
Hm
We only ever compare exercises
So same here
Lmao
Yeah but as you said earlier probably no one has discord
They're all nerds
Woa
We're nerds too tbh
Category theory is based
Ong
They should teach CT in your first semester
The dual space is just a functor
@short shard where r u from if u can tell
Germany
You?
India
Functor? I know her.

So u guys r from Germany the one talking rn
Me and @vernal token both attend the same university
In Germany
University?
And we're from the same state
Kinda
Oh I see
It's a student's program
We do university classes alongside school
And they count just as normal
Oh OK
In the US there is something similar
What year are you in?
It's called dual enrollment I think
Fr?
Final year of high school
I only knew Israel had the same thing
Wbu?
Same
I'm in year 12 and keep is in year 11
But they are different school systems
It's both of our final year
Next year at least
Yeah
After the summer holidays
Okay
Currently u guys r in Germany?
Currently not, I'm in Hungary for holidays
Holidays at this time?
Well I am
Yeah
Vacation I mean
Summer break
In August u guys have summer break wow
It starts later in Germany
Okay
I know a bunch of guys that are almost back to school
So when will ur final year end like which month in 2025
In total you probably have a longer summer break than us
In turn we probably have more smaller breaks that you don't have at all
It's for month here
4 months?
And we have additional offs on festivals
1 month
Ah
Prolly March
Wbu guys
I think it's 6 weeks here
More than 1 month then
I thought it was longer
Nah for seniors it's not
How long is it for non seniors
Around 7 weeks
Yess
Yes I do
🤯
What genres
Tbh it depends upon my mood
Mine are very diverse and don't depend on anything
I really don't mind any genres unless it has the good music in it like ykb
And then I'll listen to one song for hours
I probably have autism

Ohh suggest any ur fav song
I don't have any
