It’s basically $x-\frac{f(x)}{f’(x)}$

neruguis
And my eyes
ok
$f(x) = x- \frac{x-\tan(x) - \frac{\pi}{2}}{1-\sec(x)^2} \\ a = \lim_{n\to\infty} f^n (4.36) \\ g(x) = x- \frac{x-\tan(x) - \frac{3\pi}{2}}{1-\sec(x)^2} \\ b = \lim_{n\to\infty} g^n (1.91) \\ h(x) = x - \tan(x) \\ \pi = \lim_{n\to\infty} h^n(z)$ if $a<z<b$

better

I don't understand it fully because I am not good at maths but it looks good
Okay
how is it going guys
Smooth
Exceedingly off topic question but
I spend probably too much time at a desk so this is a good question to ask
Herman Miller Aeron
worth the hype? Are they actually that good?
Hey, do you guys think taking a college level Number theory course could help me with high school math competitions?
yeah
they are very good yes
I'm seeing some cheap-ish ones on FB marketplace
And I need a chair for my new apartment
yeah if you can snag one for a good price it's absolutely worth it
whats up guys
im new in here
may i ask how do we learn the best way
i was struggling on studying and i really forget what i study
aka slow learner
Learn slower?
But class is too fast

Hi FISh
From where

that's like saying "if you look closely at a CPU you can see a lot of electricity but you don't see any images"
@boreal elm it is there, it's just encoded rather complicatedly
like in a way where you shouldn't expect to find it in any particular place, it's a property of the entire system
im cooked
How much would you guys agree that higher level springer books are too hard to understand via self-study, and/or could be replaced by an alternate source?
Books have their prerequisites, All Springer books that I've read so far is understandable for me.
and they shouldn't be replaced
I agree 100 percent to both of you
disagree
there are very few sources that are genuinely inappropriate for self-study
I think it’s a little weird to say cuz .. springer is a publisher afaik
Like the contents of a book doesn’t rlly have connection to what the rest of their books lol
Like one author can be super terse
And publish to springer
what would you replace such books with at that point?
And one can be super easy
your only other option would literally just be other books
and that has nothing to do with the publisher
No problem
Hi is there anyone who is 16-18 who need to someone with whom he can work on for any maths project

how do I get rid of the helper role?
Damn didn't know that

How dare you! Damn you bayle moderators. Its time to wage the second holy crusade against! (The first being the mice-something holy war

I filled the form out and I had access regranted immediately.
That's not the point. The point is my historical role! 💢
(Fyi, if it isn't already clear: I'm joking)
Cope harder
filling out the form gives you a pending role, which is functionally equivalent to undergrad role
Pending role ≈ Undergrad role
thetawise gives surprisingly good answers for simpler questions
simpler not even as in simple but just meaning questions that aren't very niche
Is there a channel for quantum computing?
Yes search quantum computing on youtube there you get many options

#dynamical-systems is a place where you can ask questions about chaos
Math itself is a chaos
anyone here familiar with d3.js
Hello friends. I'm about to take Dif. Eq. this semester. I don't have Calc 3 yet so was wondering if I needed it before taking the Diff. Eq course?
Not really
Depends if your diff eq course talks about PDEs at all
If it does youll have a bit to learn
Its a first course so I don't think it will
I'll be taking linear algebra and calc 3 as well so I hope any gaps will be filled as I go through them simultaneously
t*(A(Ex-Sx)+B(Ey-Sy)+C(Ez-Sz))=A(Sx-Px)+B(Sy-Py)+C(Sz-Pz)
A=((Qy-Py)(Rz-Pz))-((Ry-Py)(Qz-Pz))
B=-((Qx-Px)(Rz-Pz))+((Rx-Px)(Qz-Pz))
C=((Qx-Px)(Ry-Py))-((Rx-Px)(Qy-Py))
Are these correct with intersect of line and plane, E and S on line and others in plane?
Like my computer can only do to like within 1.0 of real, is there a place I should ask? Unsure if this is correct to ask a help thing for but trying for arbitrarily whether a common rectangle of two shapes is before or after on average in 3d, should I ask somewhere or leave it as it is math but maybe not for here?
You should ask get help because idk your question.
Sorry, I just solved it anyway, thanks. X E.

go to geometry dash and search up for "1 plus 1" and tell me what do you think about it
can you guys think of something in the world that uses math to make things better?
Cooking
The Internet
Like if you were cooking a turkey and you needed to find out the cooking time
Or if you were cooking a burger and you wanted it medium-well what the temperature and cooking time should be
you're thinking of physics
but physics does use a lot of maths!
I think there are couple of papers discussing on how to make a perfect boiled egg. Some are using math
This paper, for example, use diffusion model to predict the time it takes to cook egg
https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0143-0807/27/1/013
Image compression, storing data, Google, ...
Traffic management
hi frens
i am slowly overcoming the shock of suddenly having run out of gay webtoons
hiii what do you mean go >:S
True, math is in cooking however the only funny thing is the use of math in general cooking is not as much as “winging” the recipe based on what you know. The average joe is not going to use a diffusion model to cook their eggs with the whites cooked and the yellow still runny
Usually the go to method would be to bring a pot of water to boiling
And dropping the eggs in for 6 minutes
Most of the identifiable math here is usually subconscious
Well, you do that in industrial settings where you need to design machine to actually cook food to specific conditions
But like, the argument on “average joe" is more or less too subjective. You can live a life only know arithmetic.
Okay I agree 100% to both of you
There's a thing called "error correcting codes"
Basically when you send a message over the internet
It's just 0s and 1s, binary
Life happens, maybe there's some electrical interference, some of those bits get flipped
Now the message is wrong, very annoying
What happens is that we often append extra information to the message
That allow your computer to correct the errors after it receives the message
So that your communications and downloads and whatever don't constantly have a bunch of error messages in them, just the actual message
I agree with that
Sorry if my statement wasn’t clear, I mean like a home cook or chef in the kitchen
But yes you are absolutely right
It is the bad part of math that you usually use it to make something and then done
Like, the cooking robot actually need to calculate those things when they are designing the system. But consumer can just press a button and let the magic happen
So, from the point of consumer, that is nothing math. It just a machine. But to make the arm moves or to think about withstanding material for the machine, that is just math upon math upon math.
So to summarize from your standpoint is that for the consumer’s convenience, the thought of math using an automated machine to fulfill their task is usually ignored until the process to which how the machine does its designed purpose is seen from its own perspective, therefore taking in data and formulating decisions based off the data that is inputted?
Math in this process is like architect. You design it once and you are done
the machine realistically runs on thoughts and prayers of the engineers frfr
Agreed
The architect designs the design for mostly the intended purpose not entirety of how it works
That is the process it takes to design it
Yeah. Like in machine learning. You build a model and that is math heavy. But once you have that, you just serve that to customers. Like ChatGPT. You don't need to know math to use it. You technically don't need to know (advanced) math to build it. But you need math to design it or to make a blueprint so that you can code it.
At that phase, you push back and forth on design and testing. But once you have a product, you probably don't need that much of the complex math to use
That's why it is hard to put into a perspective when you want to use math in real life. You do use product of mathematics but not necessarily the math itself
Unless, of course, you are maker who makes those magic happen
What's up
Looking for sb to regularly study with, college, high school competitions and maybe even Olympiad maths

i’m feeling bad about my inability to solve a finger painting problem
i lied i just wanted to respond to feather
because i have not talked to them in a while
you can lie further
they all wear ten gallon hats
what finger painting problem?
i’m trying to show that if i have a handle decomposition of a closed odd dimensional manifold, the number of even handles and the number of odd handles are the same
this is on an introductory chapter to a book i wanna read lol
i’m sure that it’ll be fine after i actually go back and understand the actual material of one of the later sections of the chapter better
what does even and odd mean here?
a q-handle is D^q x D^n-q with an attaching map out of S^q-1xD^n-q and even handle is even q and odd handle is odd q
and then a handlebody decomposition is going to be given by handle attachments to the boundary (but thicken the boundary so that it’s the right dimension)
if M is closed there is no boundary so any handle decomposition of M has to have at least one 0-handle
soft matter physicists crying
life be weird

lf someone who can teach me the basics of pre-methods (dm)
Can somebody help me for an exercise about probabilities ?
pretty sure this isnt the server for this @stiff pecan
hi
Hello
How's life going bro
Good wbu
Fine

How can we test the hypothesis "Good-looking people tend to have higher IQs" ?
this seems like a fundamentally flawed question since "good looking" is subjective
That's true
I should also warn you that discussion of intelligence quotients is not permitted by the server
just a heads up
It can lead to a very toxic environment
Oh yeah, I forgot about that rule. Thanks for reminding me. But yeah I guess any attempt to answer this question would involve having "good looking" decided by someone or a group of people
It's kinda like when high school students talk about getting admitting to X college, admission rates bla bla
Is anyone from UWaterloo?
This one study used teachers to label kids as good-looking or not
how did this make it past the autoremove filter lol
And they found that yes the good-looking ones happened to be more intelligent
But there's two different probabilities
The probability you're good-looking given that you're intelligent vs the probability you're intelligent given that you're good-looking
The s at the end presumably
dIQ

hey vro
curious

no
why does this matter?
guys, if we have a random number, then can we expect this number to be less than a random number?
it was a response to “anyone from uWaterloo”
i can expect that to be the case about 50% of the time
either it is or it isn't simple as
@gusty socket it says u are postgrad in diff geo. r u from UW?
no, UW is not the only school that does diffgeo!
can you stop harassing people and asking them if theyre from waterloo
incorrect
LOL
oh, right, my bad, it is
like i get it, but once i have the random number, its finite, and so close to 0 and much less than expecting another random number
once i pick the random number i’m gonna update the probability in my head
shoot, I gotta move there then
wdym UW is the best uni
oh boy
I agree, Washington Seattle is a great school
i love the university of wisconsin ❤️
but whatever you get the first is always finite tho, but if you calculate it now its. 50/50, but after...
idk im tripping
university of wellington
i don’t know what you mean by the first thing you’re saying. what is the random number that you’re picking? is it a natural number (and if so what’s the distribution) is it a real number? something between 0 and 1?
Can you stop making fun of UW? Are you mad that you didn't get an offer?
lol
what is your deal lol
Wait guys I will get my popcorn
the timing of your existence in my world is too big of a coincidence for me to believe that you’re real
many people can reject the offer
this is clearly a fake account lmao
idk it's been a while
Why
Deltoid
this is a bit pathetic right
who has this big of a UW hate that they would do this

Fr
It’s because if has loo in the name
Can you STOP making fun of uAlberta? Are you mad that you didn't get an offer?
yes 😦
Hi John
bruh chill
surprised you arent saying vro frfr too
Are you mad that you didn't get an offer to uAlberta?
????
what that supposed to mean
are u from alberta?
yes
ok good
no john is from uwaterloo dummy
he's a grad student in math
but you knew that already :)
:)
what degree
i mean what speciality
nice
it's nice to see people from my university honestly
what's ur major
engineering
oh
yeah
how do you see all the channels?
Lol
😵💫
Uuhm anyone knows like any good resources on mathematical logic?
???
How do you even define slow for divergence
What does it mean for something to diverge slowly
im extremely stupid
something converges slowly
bruh
How do you define slow for convergence
I get what you mean, it does feel like the harmonic series diverges slowly
I'm just wondering if there's a way to make it rigorous
hmm
i saw an expression of pi which quote unquote converged slowly
like even with a million terms you only had a few decimals
🤓
yeah i guess its subjective
like >>
pi/4= sum from n=0 to inf of (-1)^n 1/(2n+1)
i guess i dont have a rigorous definition for it
if you subtract from the harmonic sum the log, the limit suddenly exists now
and log is one of the slowest growing functions
because it's derivative approaches 0
can u give an example
that is literally the example
$\lim_{n \to \infty} \sum_{k=1}^n \frac{1}{k} - \log (n) = \gamma \approx 0.57721$
Transparent Elemental
yeah
the harmonic number is asymptotically equal to log term + little gamma + O(1/x)
so when you take x-> inf
well
$\sum_{n \le x} \frac{1}{n} = \log x + \gamma + \frac{1}{2x} - \sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\frac{B_{2k}}{2k x^{2x}}$
Deltoid
$\lim_{N\to\infty} \int_{1}^{N} x^{-1} \dd{x}$ does not exist
josemom2
probably every convergence/divergence question in calculus can be answered with analytic number theory

Abel summation formula is really a godsent (ignore the fact it's just a baby Lebesgue integral)
why did u bleak outsider
best answer 🔥
@fresh comet why did u bleak
is there a table look up for why the harmonic series diverge?
we just gave you the reasons

we told u take x->infinity
nah to much work
eh i doubt it will be useful to get money anyway
well, not everything in life is about money
if it were, then mathematics would be a pointless endeavour
@latent edge ur pfp looks sick btw with the glasses

wrong
everything is about money
this is a very sad perspective to hold, if I'm gonna be honest
nah i just gotta maintain a 4.0 gpa in college and ill be fine
Then why do you care about the divergence of the harmonic series? What money is there in that?
i wanted to see if yall are smart
turns out im the smartest here
I don't see why thinking that money is everything makes you the smartest here, nor why that label matters at all.
Isn't that common sense?
Money = happiness
it is not common sense, no.
That's the spirit
not everyone has such a bleak outlook on life, I'm afraid.
13-year olds often do
fair enough, but if james is a 13 year old who's made it to university, then I think I ought to congratulate him a bit for it
Overachieving 13-year olds have it all the more
wdym
I got accepted to the university of waterloo like 2 years ago
so you were accepted at the age of 11?
💰 =❤️
since coming to uni i've met properly rich people that i'd never really have ever ran into before, and they're all as annoyed at life as the rest of us
exactly
sounds like u are just mad lol
they need to get richer 🤣
why would I be mad?
I have nothing against you personally
I feel like you're trying to rile me up for some reason
james banach is epic
real
real
real
id say its a proper subset
hey, congrats on the honorable!
ty !
that's 2 ppl today I've congratulated in 2hrs
i wanna get honourable for being good at number theory aaaaaa
is there more I wonder
whats ur gpa
ngl u sound like the average guy on linkedin
like 5
a genuine question: why do you care?
I could tell you, but I don't see why it matters!
is gpa a uni thing I thought it was before university?
assessing if you're worth his time
gpa measures how smart u are
it most definitely does not!
oh it measures how smart people are they I'm the dumbest here
good to know
now what
maybe measures how many easy classes you took haha
say, there was a student in my LA class who literally fainted on the final exam worth 50% of his grade. he failed the course because of that, but I would easily call him brighter than me (and this is not me racing to the bottom); by your logic, he was apparently one of the stupidest in the class like ???
this is a silly metric
gpa depends on the university too, inflation or deflation happen, it just approximates how much you understood the content of the courses you took on average, and how much time you commit to studying.
well that's not my problem
smartness is not binary, people have different skills in different areas
damn that's even worse than me incorrectly setting my alarm and sleeping through most of a final during my last semester
(got to take it as a makeup exam though)
yknow

u gotta work hard to get 4.0 gpa cuz med school care less about your being
you guys are putting effort into responding to what is obviously a troll
ah, you're a premed?
yea i have read on several occasions that the average gpa in some of the ivy league universities is like 3.7, absurd
counterpoint: arguing with random people online is extremely satisfying and fun
no matter if they're a troll or not
someone I know went out the night before his exam (cause he forgot he had one the day after he thought it was like 3 days after) and then slept through it completely
is that an inflation or deflation?
inflation
damn, did he get to take a makeup exam?
inflated as hell, the "average" student gets an A?
ah
it was 2nd year and that's the only thing he missed so he had to do a resit but capped at 40%
ouch
capped at 40% is salt on the wound
indeed
all resits at my uni are capped at 40%
probably still fail even if you resit
but I think only first and 2nd year get them?
just retake the class ig
40% is a failing grade what is the point of resitting
40% is a pass here
my guess is that guy had a big inflation in his high school which lead to a lot of people having an average of 99 in high school. now he is just being arrogant about getting into top schools
ah
British grade boundaries so 40%+ is a pass
my guess is that none of this is even true and theyre just trolling
yea high school grades are pretty much meaningless, there are high schools with 20-30 valedictorians
what actually is GPA?
grade point average
cause I thought it was a high school thing specifically
they assign points to a grade boundary and then average them out of all the classes you take
wdym i worked hard for a 98 in high school 🤓
it's a bit dumb since averaging the points across widely different classes ends up giving you a meaningless metric
is it just the average of your module/class marks
yes
waterloo gives you the free card to get big money effortlessly
quantized marks yes
quantized marks?
it is not a very good metric but better than nothing i guess
inflation is better than deflation at least
i wouldn't be suprised if the average here is 30/100
your course marks get converted to a letter grade based on thresholds (A/B/C/D/F) and then for the gpa, some number is assigned, like A=4, B=3, etc
some schools have + and - versions of the letter grades, not all do
Is that not stupid though?
as in should it not take into account where you are in the boudnary
it's kind of brain dead
i got 4.0 gpa in high school
that's what the + and - are for
when they exist
oh ok
like A might be 4, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, B is 3, whatever
even so they still have to draw the line somewhere
i had As for all of my classes
We just average the percentage you get out and then the years are weighted differently so 2nd year is worth less than 3rd year
im smart
but ig on average over a four year degree it washes out
and then that determines your degree classification
but what are the boundaries cause the highest grade here is just 70%+
which is a big boundary
depends on the professor and the university
this is smarter, if the numbers are comparable between courses
like if 90% in math is comparably hard to achieve as 90% in say english or what have you
The vast majority of people are only in one course anyway but everything should be comparable in any joint honours stuff
it varies from school to school and course to course
often the instructors wait until the end to see the distribution of raw scores, and then assign letter grades at what look like natural breakpoints
I imagine the only cases where it becomes a bit weird is at kind of low tier obscure unis where they don't care as much about balancing difficulty
no offence to those going to them
we get deflated on average over here too
but not nearly as bad as you
we're getting inflated every year
it hurts grad applications mostly
let me guess u are not from uw? lmao
<@&268886789983436800>
this is just out of hand
they're changing one of the core maths modules for 2nd year here because "too many people are failing it and it's too difficult" but because of grade curving the average mark is like as high as it's ever been which is so funny
i think in the US (at least in math) grad schools know that there's a lot of variation in GPAs from one undergrad school to another, that's why things like letters of recommendation carry so much weight
cause like i would have a 80/100 mark in a important class and the 2nd highest mark is 50 but like its still worse than mark from X school who has 100/100 on that course in his uni
that's crazy
I'm at Toronto, but I hold respect for UW as an institution. You happen to be one of the more insufferable students from there I've seen on this server, which is unfortunate, because almost everyone else I've seen has been quite nice
which i do address in like motivation to some extent
negative
from this
I already banned them oop
they've just been being an ass since joining
Deltoid is not a UW shill
which of the various UW's are we talking about here haha
waterloo
ah

ur so real for that
LMAO
banach died in 1945
and left banach spaces
which is like the discussy of almost all analysis if im not wrong
i think james hates the abel summation formula
hey delt wanna get scared
no
ill take it as yes
@latent edge
the implication would be that james was an alt made to create a negative impression of the undergraduate students at UW
not that james was made to shill UW
which isn't to say anything about whether it's true or not, just that this would be the indictment, since deltoid is known to dislike UW
All I can say is that I've seen UW mentioned more times within the last few days than I have in the previous 40ish years of my life.
Someone is running a publicity campaign, although whether it's UW or its enemies it's hard to tell
HAHHAHA
This made my day
Thank you Outsider
Well I also hate UW

My company has a bad history of interns from waterloo
no hate tbh my ex was also from waterloo. I hated him so much
Sounds like a cope

It's not an argument. If I think it sounds like that then that's my subjective opinion

I forgot to add something like "I have an average 98 rn am I cooked for waterloo?"
how's the adminstration of one of the top unis in canada so universally hated? lol
literally every friend I got hates the admin with a flaming passion
I was debating on going to Waterloo or uoft for computer engineering
this is my sign ig

@jagged forge you have perfect pitch, right?
The admin sucks
@latent edge morning
how's everyone's day so far
it’s 9 am and i’m still awake
u need to sleep babe
i know

I don't feel like going to uni today and waste 3 hours watching the prof talking about his grad school life
Insufferable prof

yeah
fun fact: if you learn music before the age of around 6 and you grow up in a country where they speak a tonal language
you are 80% likely to develop perfect pitch
maybe not 80% but
it's actually more common in Asian American folk
okay cool
I have a question. If you hear something pitchless like white noise, are you able to pick out individual notes?
Like can you suppress all other notes than, let’s say, A♭ and hear A♭ as the main note?
I can do that, but apparently it’s rare even with perfect pitch, so I was wondering if others could do it
I never thought much of it
oh wow
like significantly more likely
I can tell you what note a car horn is, having perfect pitch myself
oh cool
white noise just doesn't have any kind of pitch
it's like naming the pitch of someone slapping their hand on a table
right
but the way I’ve learned about white noise is that it has all pitches
if that makes sense
ehhhhh I don't think you're talking about an echo chamber
white noise produces the opposite amplitude of the surrouding noise
so that the resulting sound cancels out to zero
i was told it was like hiw white light has all wavelengths of visible light
hiw-8
how**
like the kind of white noise people play from their phone
now Im curious about how we perceive that
like two frequencies with the same frequency (sounds wrong lol) but with opposite phases
that's different
i wonder how that works
mhm?
sound doesn't work like that
if you add together two different sounds it becomes louder
if you add many different colours, but using paint, you will get something very close to black
oh
it's only with light that adding many different colours gives white
exactly
that's the technical name which I forgot
oh
maybe an example I should have used was
a car moving on the road
and you hear everything from the tires moving and the car vibrating
does that make sense? it makes sense but it doesn’t 😭😭
like it sounds like it doesn’t have any certain pitch until you focus on one
yh like when u listen to a song so much u focus on js the certain instruments
Never
white noise? uhhhh i don't think so, that's a pretty extreme case
fun fact i did neither of these
though i am asian american
i didn't even know i had it until i was 12
lol
ohh, okay
interesting
kind of like that yeah
it does though
white noise has a flat frequency spectrum
that's why they call it white noise, it's like white light
paint is subtractive but light is exactly like sound
interesting
oh?
that’s what I’ve heard
(@jagged forge too) could subtractive color be compared to something like a sound-absorption room (I forgot what they’re called), with additive color, or visible light being compared to something like a speaker?
😭😭
well, if something absorbs all of the sound, you're not going to hear "black noise" from that
it's just silence
well, i guess silence is like the color black
but i don't think we tend to think of silence as a "color" you can mix with other sounds
that’s fair
thanks guys
!
ew
don't lol
don't me ask me
if you want to try then go ahead cuz idc
no
can't play today
i got bunch of stuff to do
thanks
Wow, this place is quite
Guys, please explain how from this equation, that is, from one fifth you get X in the second = 100
-1/5*x^2+20 = 0
-x^2+100=0
that sticker looks sick. I should use that more often

hey guys do u have any tips to become better at mathematics
Practise
Get a good sleep

taking classes is pretty helpful
any calc tips
practice
hey
practice
For calculus? Memorize trig identities, memorize and internalize definition of a derivative( f(x+h) as h->0), practice problems
I'm taking advanced calc 1 next semester and wanted to get a stronger foundation before the class starts. Is there a website I could practice proof writing?
don't they spend it all on college tuition and health expenses tho
Realistically h1b visa or study at an American university
this is not the same class as what they're talking about
and doesn't help with proof writing
there are probably a few books
that have good exercises
if you're not planning on covering a construction of R then I recommend learning one before the class starts
not everyone agrees with me that it's important but i find it important
(that is, in fact, not the definition of a derivatives. I appreciate the effort though)
then im one of the few that agree haha I wanted to get a head start and refresh some of the old proofs. the teacher already sent out an email about that. do you have any specific books you recommend?
Whoops, my b
Nah, just college.
We don't pay for health expenses we just die
lovely
Healthcare is for weak europeans /j

Can god prove ZFC axioms?
In fact, can god prove any axiom?
Can The Almighty construct a language that does not have closure?
yeah i could do that for you!
God does not exist, you are not god 😦
what if i was though that would be pretty neat
did you know that if you say god three times he will appear in your mirror
Will test that tonight. I don't show up in any mirrors myself.
I made some bad decisions, drank some bad red viscous liquid.
wine?
or soda
how to get better at skibidi-math
i see you edited the message to be more “hip”
more practice

You have to get older to get better at math. You need to understand what 'math' is.
Being able to compute things fast in your brain is really a useless skill these days.
You need to understand the reasong and logic behind it.
I honestly believe a young person --- at least me when I was young (say, 17-18) has too many hormones flowing through him to be able to reason properly.
Plus, mathematics has dozens of subsets.
As someone who follows Hoare and Dijkistra's paradigm of 'structured programming', I have learned that it's all about 'domain anylasis', that is, reducing everything down to a 'domain'.
So for a high schooler or junior colleger: Reduce the problem to a domain.
And choose a subset you like
This is all respond to the 'how do I git gud at math' question someone just posted.
Not sure if it's a meme here. Apologies if it's a meme.
I'm personally learning how to prove my programs (both imperative and functional).
Also reading on metamathematics helps a lot.
Also I'm talking about Joe Q. Normal. There are of course exceptions to this rule that prove it. I knew this kid in high school who solved extremely hard problems.
But see he has skipped ahead a few grades and he was a late bloomer.
I feel like a layman would use quick mental computation more than rigorous thought process
Why. They all have a computer in their pockets don't they. Only a solar flare would stop it from working.
I'm personally trying to think in hexadecial and octal and do mind-computation in that base. I trreat my brain like a stack machine to learn it lol. But I still check vital stuff with Unix expr utility.
Thinking hexadecimal helps with OS development because you need to know a lot of buffer addreses.
But nobody trusts mind-computation with serious stuff. I am making a hobby OS that will only run on an emulator, and I still don't trust my mind.
Back when they made Boeing 747 they used slide-rules. Before that they used abaci.
Even buying a bag of Cheetoz (it's spelled with a z here), I would not trust mind-computation
imagine having to whip out a phone for a simple 4 digits addition when trading chips in a casino
relying on a phone too much is the exact opposite of a good thing to do
Imagine shipping an unverified software with 0 temporal memory safety that causes the largest IT outage in Western countries.
Sometime you have to rely on unverified computations
I dunno man.
What I mean is, if you can use a calculator, you should.
but an average people would use less rigorous thought process anyways
These two examples are very different
Au contraire, this casino thing is a good microchasm for the 'software crisis'
At least at first glance.
I did not know dealers had to do fast math honestly.
I have to look into this.
I don't know how to play cards at all.
My dad was not a player so I never learned.
I had to turn down a lucrative Poker software deal because of it 😦
I don't know much about gaming -- as in game theory. Which reminds me i have to go back to my game theory book. TTYGS.
You guys should not bully me because I am mostly self-taught and I am still learning a lot of suff 😄 (I dropped out of 'programming' in scientific-vocational college after 3 semester. I have studied 6 semesters in 2 other majors. I just can't stick with a university program. Bipolar, diagnosed at 13).
What is the best Textbook for learning Algebra 2
I really like Gelfand's Algebra
It should do both alg 1 and 2 i think
Hes got a nice writing style. More readable
me and @light horizon are proof that is is not true
I do indeed do mathematical logic
So this point seems a bit silly
Note: Understanding the proof of Godel's incompleteness theorem will not help you do algebraic topology!
hello chat
smh this must be the hormones talking
I hope everyone scores above 80 in their exams
not good enough
Yes but this is not about being young or old
There are young people doing abstract algebra, algebraic geometry and other grad stuff and actually understanding it
Take e.g. Peter Scholze who brought Hartshorne with him to high school
I explained a few messages below that this is not a universal experience did I not. Just some sort of aggregate experience. Most my peers weren't doing advanced math in HS. Just 1 kid who had skipped ahaead from middle school. I said this below my message.
The main thesis was that hormones make some teenagers like me stupid. Plus illness (in my case, diabees and bipolarity)
An expert told me about the hormone thing. A human sciences phd.
teenage hormones affect your self control and decision making skills, but i've never heard anyone argue that it impacts your raw skills when it comes to something like math or programming
though i could buy that as you get older you get better at different types of reasoning
that said i do think saying teenagers can't do math because of hormones is wrong, or at least better explained by other factors
such as.... being more interested in other things
and of course there are many teenagers that can do math
Well I did understand basic continuous math like interation and differentation, and basic discrete math, and some linalg. Whatever they taught me at school I understood. I aced functions in 10th grade. In February of 2010 (11th grade) I was diagnosed with T1 diabetes and this mixed in with my bipolarity (I never cared what type I am because I don't tie my identity to the mental disease that I got, but if I am T1 I will be T1x2) really crashed my vitals, I had to sleep 16hours a day. I skipped 90% of 12th grade. Ended up staying a month in the mental hospital twice.
So maybe it was just my wexperience. lol.
i can do math (not very well but still)
fuck. reminder to check people's profiles carefully before emailing them about phd applications
i want to bury myself 4 1/2 feet underground
Happens to the best of us

What is a soup'd up PDF viewer for Linux? I'm tired of using Evince. The only other one I know is gv which is ancient.
Evince runs DVI and PostScript files too. But it has no QoL features.
I want a DVI/PS/PDF reader that fornicates.
