Really

dire flicker
#

i doubt searle took that point into account

granite crag
#

yes

deep mango
#

Hmm

granite crag
#

It's the difference between multiplying two numbers and looking up values in a multiplication table.

#

In order to be able to multiply any two arbitrary numbers we would have to know the rules. Otherwise there will necessarily exist a set of numbers we can't multiply.

neat lintel
#

here we are

granite crag
#

There will be a counter-example without knowing the rules

neat lintel
#

been looking for you guys where have you all been??

dire flicker
granite crag
#

ok

#

then they can't multiply all numbers

neat lintel
#

...

granite crag
#

If they've somehow memorized an infinite table, then sure, they understand it

#

but no computer or human can do this

#

(i like meeting ppl in real life dc is too anonymous)

granite crag
# deep mango Hmm

I mean this is even true formally, a multiplication morphism can be represented as a product relation.

#

In category theory we can represent morphisms as objects

granite crag
#

Ok, then ask a big picture question and they won't be able to answer it.

deep mango
#

Is this some silly yoneda lemma application

granite crag
#

I think so?

deep mango
#

But im thinking!

granite crag
#

I don't have a good enough understanding of category theory to be precise but it seems to be relevant here

deep mango
#

Brain functors...

granite crag
#

Yes

#

Consciousness is a just a something functor in the category of whatever such that I don't know

neat lintel
#

this is an advanced topic

deep mango
#

Iirc searle cares a lot about stuff like "emergent phenomena"

#

And chinese room was like, an example to target a very specific distinction in understanding the emergent phenomenon of consciousness

#

But not sure

granite crag
#

Ok

#

Yeah I genuinely don't understand the opposing position so I wanted to talk to someone who mostly agrees with Searle lol

deep mango
neat lintel
#

consciousness is the fundamental reality, and our perceptions of the physical world are merely adaptive interfaces created by evolution rather than accurate representations of an objective universe.

granite crag
#

Not sure about consciousness being fundamental, sounds like theism

deep mango
#

Yeah i mean this is one existential interpretation of chinese room but not really what searle cared to communicate

# vagrant mantle no no like how do you measure it

you can't measure how good someone is at math as far as i know. You could make up a new way to measure it, for example: amount of scientific papers published in math, but it would be inaccurate. You could also measure intelligence scores, but they wouldn't indicate high math-skill. in short, i don't think it's possible

can someone explain what a norm is in a v space in a nutshell

peak tide

(e.g. usual euclidean length of a vector in R^n)

pulsar finch
#

okay, and what is a hilbert space and how does the norm relate to that? what would be the difference between a hilbert space and a vspace

peak tide
#

it's a specialized version of a normed space

#

you have the following sequence of specializations:

#

vector space ⊃ normed space ⊃ inner product space ⊃ hilbert space

#

a normed space is a vector space with a norm

#

an inner product space is a vector space with an inner product (which generalizes the dot product)

#

a hilbert space is an inner product space which is complete (no "gaps", every cauchy sequence converges)

not listed in that chain is a banach space, which is a normed space which is complete

raven plaza
#

Inner product spaces have length

empty stratus
#

For example, the space of continuous real-valued functions on the closed unit interval has:

<f,g> = ∫f(x)g(x) dx

as an inner product.

raven plaza
#

Having angles but not length would be more like "conformal space"

empty stratus
#

But that induces the L^2 norm, rather than the supremum norm.

raven plaza
#

It's still a norm

#

The difference between Hilbert space and inner product space is you have a limit operation

empty stratus
#

Every inner product induces a norm.

raven plaza
#

(that makes it complete)

empty stratus
#

However, some normed spaces admit inner products which do not induce their norm.

#

A priori, the definition of an inner product space does not require nor mandate that the space have a norm.

raven plaza
empty stratus
#

My point is, the data "let V be an inner product space" does not mean that V has a norm, and thus, that V has a notion of length.

#

Inner product space ≠ normed space ≠ normed inner product space

peak tide
#

how does an inner product induce an angle if you don't use the norm associated with the inner product?
cos(theta) = <a,b> / (|a| |b|)
only works if the norm is the one associated with the inner product

velvet dagger
#

So on paper nothing is stopping you from taking an inner product space, ignoring the obvious norm, and considering another (or just refusing to do anything involving length)

#

But in practice this is not a thing people do

#

then in around february we had the opportunity to send some goofy aah valentines with candy anonymously

#

it was funded by the school's leadership club

are you looking for a scientific reason (or something similar)?

bronze crystal

idk this all is very confusing

quasi jackal
fervent oyster
fervent oyster
bronze crystal
#

i'm trying to make my knowledge compatible with God if i do some day believe

fervent oyster
#

okay that helps me a lot that you’ve said that

#

what knowledge do you have that might conflict with God?

bronze crystal
#

well uh

fervent oyster
#

i’m not going to condemn you for it

bronze crystal
#

like i don't believe the Universe only popped into existence 2000 years ago

hazy elbow
#

ok im back

#

let me read

fervent oyster
#

I hear that a lot

bronze crystal
#

because my chinese ancestors definitely existed before that (or so i currently believe, anyway)

hazy elbow
quasi jackal
#

in history we split up into groups

quasi jackal
#

ikr 😭

fervent oyster
quasi jackal
#

i actually had to beg for them to make it anonymous lmao

fervent oyster
#

but I can ask my more knowledgeable friends about it!

hazy elbow
#

whatd u even write in the note

quasi jackal
bronze crystal
quasi jackal
#

i just inserted a heart shaped paper in it

#

there was a bag of candy

#

that was the candygram šŸ’€

neat lintel
#

The universe popped into existence when I was born

hazy elbow

u got her candy

hazy elbow

or it came w cand

bronze crystal
#

if im being honest i'll probably live in a perpetual state of being on the fence that there's a God

quasi jackal
#

that was the whole valentine

hazy elbow
#

ohhh ok

#

and then

#

goo on

#

feb 27

quasi jackal
#

ok ok

#

feb 27

#

so i drew a drawing

fervent oyster
quasi jackal
#

of a lake in the night

#

and i wrote a poem on the back of the drawing

quasi jackal
#

and i folded it and put it on her desk before history class started

hazy elbow
#

so artsy

quasi jackal
#

i made sure i was the first one there so no one would be a witness

hazy elbow

if ur th rfirst one there

quasi jackal

quasi jackal

quasi jackal
hazy elbow
#

ok then what

quasi jackal
#

ok then since it was a work day and the teacher wasnt lecturing

#

she freaking asked the teacher

#

she read the poem out loud

#

and said "do you know who left this??"

hazy elbow
#

brooo why couldnt she jus keep it to herself 😭

quasi jackal
#

she said she thought it was for someone else 😭

hazy elbow
#

did u get ratted out

quasi jackal
#

but the teacher said nobody forgot anything from the previous class

quasi jackal
hazy elbow
#

uh ooohhh

#

did u sign her nqame on it??!

fervent oyster
quasi jackal
hazy elbow
#

what a yapper

quasi jackal
quasi jackal
bronze crystal
quasi jackal
#

so anyways class ended

hazy elbow
fervent oyster
quasi jackal
#

me and my goofy aah friend who was in on the plot asked her "d'yknow who it is"

fervent oyster
#

you’re welcome :D

quasi jackal
quasi jackal
#

and i said "well...i think i might know who wrote that"

quasi jackal
#

and with that i ran the heck out of there

#

then a few weeks pass and nothing eventful happens

#

but then...in march 8th....

hazy elbow
quasi jackal
#

ye for that day specifically

#

but then on march 8th we had an all school meeting

hazy elbow
#

u didnt say who it could have been

quasi jackal
#

no hell no

hazy elbow
#

did she ask

quasi jackal
#

no

#

but wait till i get to march 8th

hazy elbow
quasi jackal
#

ooh boy march 8th

#

anyways

#

once we were leaving the meeting room

#

she walks up to me and asks "would you like to be part of the engineering team at a local competition?"

hazy elbow
#

the way u rmr specific dates

quasi jackal
fervent oyster

hazy elbow

so she invited me because i wanted to be a math major and i had to be pretty smart for that

hazy elbow

hazy elbow
quasi jackal
#

nerdier than i am

hazy elbow
#

oh

#

wow..

fervent oyster
#

I remember that the Soviet Union dissolved on December 25, 1991

and this is attractive to u

quasi jackal
#

so then we sat down on a table outside and signed up for the competition

quasi jackal
fervent oyster
#

Chernobyl disaster happened 4/26/1986

hazy elbow
#

u remember like u lived thru it

fervent oyster
#

lolol

quasi jackal
#

and she said "no, do you know who it is?"

hazy elbow
#

bro why would u ask again 2 weeks later LMFAOAOOAOAOA

quasi jackal
#

lmao cuz i was ready to confess that day

hazy elbow
#

she obv wouldnt have asked if she asked u for the thing

#

ohhh

#

okay

fervent oyster
quasi jackal
#

anyways

#

i proceed to read the poem out loud while she pulls out the paper from her backpack

hazy elbow
#

or chat gpt

quasi jackal
#

i had it written down on my own notebook

fervent oyster
#

im just thinking

quasi jackal
#

so she verified that i knew every single line of that poem

fervent oyster
#

JFK was assassinated 9/22/1963

quasi jackal
#

yes precisely

hazy elbow
#

did she pull it out

quasi jackal
#

yes

hazy elbow
#

or did u memorize

#

oh

fervent oyster
hazy elbow
quasi jackal
#

well i couldnt see her paper

hazy elbow
hazy elbow
fervent oyster
quasi jackal
#

so i just pulled out my own paper

#

since i had a copy

hazy elbow
#

oh so u did confes

#

s

quasi jackal
#

ye

#

she still didnt say anything after that

hazy elbow
#

šŸ™

quasi jackal
#

so i explained what the 6.1-16 meant

hazy elbow
#

nerdy

quasi jackal
#

and halfway through she said "it was you!!!!"

#

and then she couldnt stop laughing after saying that

hazy elbow
#

ok well no shit why would she sway it haklfway

#

o...

#

:(

quasi jackal
#

but somehow idk it didnt seem like she was disappointed

fervent oyster
#

Max Headroom hacking incident (Chicago, IL) happened on 11/22/1987

quasi jackal
#

she then said she spent a lot of time trying to figure out who it was

hazy elbow
#

but laughing in ur face

fervent oyster
#

okay I’m done I think

quasi jackal
#

and that she was dum for not realizing it was me

hazy elbow
fervent oyster
#

😭😭😭

hazy elbow
quasi jackal
#

that i kept trying to sit close to her outside of class

hazy elbow
#

ah she noticed

#

ok

quasi jackal
#

then my goofy aah friend kept trying to make us talk to each other

hazy elbow
#

after it happened

quasi jackal
#

yes

hazy elbow
#

or before

#

oh

#

ok

quasi jackal
#

after the note happened

hazy elbow
#

after she knew

#

or

quasi jackal
#

before she knew

hazy elbow
#

oohh

#

ok

quasi jackal
#

so anyways after the confession

hazy elbow
#

mhm

quasi jackal
#

we still had to go to history, so everything went like normal there

#

then after class i rizzed and gave her my phone number and email

hazy elbow
#

why email ..

quasi jackal
#

idk

hazy elbow
#

u communicate w ppl thru email

quasi jackal
#

yes

hazy elbow
#

like

#

friends

#

not teachers

quasi jackal
#

yes

#

email is fun

hazy elbow
#

the more i know the more like puzzled i am with u

#

ok

quasi jackal
#

uwu

#

anyways

hazy elbow
#

..continuuee

#

e

quasi jackal
#

im at home and i see that she messaged me "hi it's insert name here :)"

#

and then after that we proceed to have long aah conversations about random stuff through text

hazy elbow
#

awww

#

okay so is this good love story

quasi jackal
#

hrmm kinda

#

but then being the cringey person i am irl

#

i might've said some cringey stuff while she was there

#

my friend group is very sussy ngl

#

so we inevitably speak about sussy things

#

like "fuwwies uwu uwuwuwuwuwuwuwu"

#

fuwwies in my walls

hazy elbow

šŸ˜€

quasi jackal
#

fuwwies in my shoes

#

fuwwies in my bed

#

so on

hazy elbow
#

stop

#

stooooo

quasi jackal
#

ok ok ok you got the idea

hazy elbow

this is bad

quasi jackal

but the goofy aah friend from the beginning was like "doge stop you're gonna give her the ick"

I've a small question

#

There's the xy problem

Where someone asks for help doing Y because they think it will help them do X

#

And there's another problem

#

Where someone asks something like:"Hi, can anyone help me?" instead of asking the question itself

#

How is that problem called?

have you taken any calculus

grand pecan

i know it helps you maximize

i only know dx^2/dx=2x

grand pecan

you might have to learn up to multivar calculus to really start understanding it, but you will encounter some optimization in calculus 1

grand pecan
#

ok

#

also

#

to optimize a function like f(x)=4-x^2, solving for x when the derivative is 0 is enough, right?

#

the lagrange multiplier combines the restriction of q+r+s=12

verbal karma
#

yes... Lagrange multiplier is usually for constraint optimization

north topaz
#

yes and usually with multivariable functions

#

there's no constraint here, a constraint would be like x + y + z = 1 or something

for instance, the region bounded by the plane and the x and y-axes is a triangle

if it is bounded in a box, then I can see why you see hexagon
