i doubt searle took that point into account
yes
Hmm
I mean it's important though
It's the difference between multiplying two numbers and looking up values in a multiplication table.
In order to be able to multiply any two arbitrary numbers we would have to know the rules. Otherwise there will necessarily exist a set of numbers we can't multiply.
here we are
There will be a counter-example without knowing the rules
been looking for you guys where have you all been??
this is a good example to use. the person in the experiment just looks up the value in the multiplication table so we can't really say the person is able to multiply two numbers.
...
If they've somehow memorized an infinite table, then sure, they understand it
but no computer or human can do this
we can meet irl at some math class once uni starts probably
I'm trying to meet some more people next year, so that would be nice lol
(i like meeting ppl in real life dc is too anonymous)
I mean this is even true formally, a multiplication morphism can be represented as a product relation.
In category theory we can represent morphisms as objects
Ok, then ask a big picture question and they won't be able to answer it.
Im not sure how trying to write it down with categories helps me to see your claim that "understanding multiplication" and "being able to answer any multiplication problem correctly" are the same
Is this some silly yoneda lemma application
I think so?
Right, thats why i am kind of not sure how to refute your point yet
But im thinking!
I don't have a good enough understanding of category theory to be precise but it seems to be relevant here
Brain functors...
Yes
Consciousness is a just a something functor in the category of whatever such that I don't know
this is an advanced topic
Iirc searle cares a lot about stuff like "emergent phenomena"
And chinese room was like, an example to target a very specific distinction in understanding the emergent phenomenon of consciousness
But not sure
Ok
Yeah I genuinely don't understand the opposing position so I wanted to talk to someone who mostly agrees with Searle lol
(Emergent from a series of perceptions, known facts, and logical/emotional rules)
consciousness is the fundamental reality, and our perceptions of the physical world are merely adaptive interfaces created by evolution rather than accurate representations of an objective universe.
We're talking about The Chinese Room #serious-discussion message
Not sure about consciousness being fundamental, sounds like theism
Yeah i mean this is one existential interpretation of chinese room but not really what searle cared to communicate
interesting
i skraight up don't get the point
is it like a the sum of all parts != the whole thing
That's my point

what makes someone good at math?
by definition someone is good at math if their last name is "tao" and especially if their first name is "terence"
during birth invest points into intelligence
no no like how do you measure it
that's a good measurement tho
You should read "Counterexamples in Human Naming".
you can't measure how good someone is at math as far as i know. You could make up a new way to measure it, for example: amount of scientific papers published in math, but it would be inaccurate. You could also measure intelligence scores, but they wouldn't indicate high math-skill. in short, i don't think it's possible
i mean it was a joke

winner was sent to jail for 20 years or smth

I think Terry Tao mentioned something about not watching television as an aside in an interview.
Dude actively played games
Video games may not have the same effect as television shows.
Oooh that's actually reasonable
TV shows back then used to be good
Now, it's just trash
Video games are mentally more active and television shows are mentally more passive.

I think every mathematician who has made it in their lives would agree to have been thinking only about math for a duration of time
So to a certain extent, getting better at math certainly involves doing more math
Me personally, i can see why
If I don't do math for even a day, i develop brain fog
given a person who can comprehend math faster than another person. would that person who could comprehend math faster be "better" at math?
No
comprehend could mean, for example, able to read a proof then apply it immediately
Mathematicians are a slow breed
It's weird but most of the math people I have met, are really slow
There's a point to which you can show off quick comprehension skills

I was forced to look it up when I found it in a linalg problem book the first time

this is the standard notation everyone uses
what
Hi
$\mathbb{Q}_q$ is standard notation for unramified extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$
nGroupoid
I forgot the notation for the p adic field extension of Q
Damn
It's been some time since I read a footnote that discouraged some notation
you're probably thinking of $\mathbb{Z}_p$
nGroupoid
a lot of people use this to denote the cyclic group of order p which is bad
because this is standard notation for the p-adic integers

Hey, iām 19 years old and iām failing Intermediate Algebra in my summer course. Should I drop out?
no, but you should ask yourself why it is happening?
maybe you aren't studying hard enough, or maybe you are but just aren't grasping the concepts
which is it?
Both
Ok, iāve been unmotivated
Itās discouraging to have to take Intermediate Algebra as a 19 year old
Happens a lot with math
Since once you start lagging behind, you cannot just skip intermediate stuff
what happens if u drop out
You become life experience collector
What's intermediate algebra
which algebras are you working with, group algebras, algebras of functions, non-associative algebras....
All algebras are nonassociative algebras
Like how all manifolds without boundary are manifolds with boundary
it's funny to me how "manifold with boundary" is not a manifold

whats 1+1
if you find one tell me , any server , even with verification
don't know any :(
i joined this one server a while back but it required phone number verification so i just quit
3
Actually 5
no its 11
1+1 but then you multiply both by 2 since there are two then it's 4, then you add one
It's 121
na its 0
1+1 goes to 11 then since there are 2 ones, square it to get 121
It's i

Cause it's 1+1 then -3 then you get the square of that

Hey guys, is there a good physics discord (or irc/xmpp/matrx/whatever) server that doesn't require you to verify your account with your phone number?
phone number verification is brutal
can someone explain what a norm is in a v space in a nutshell
generalization of the notion of magnitude
(e.g. usual euclidean length of a vector in R^n)
okay, and what is a hilbert space and how does the norm relate to that? what would be the difference between a hilbert space and a vspace
it's a specialized version of a normed space
you have the following sequence of specializations:
vector space ā normed space ā inner product space ā hilbert space
a normed space is a vector space with a norm
an inner product space is a vector space with an inner product (which generalizes the dot product)
a hilbert space is an inner product space which is complete (no "gaps", every cauchy sequence converges)
not listed in that chain is a banach space, which is a normed space which is complete
#chill might be what you're looking for
oh yeah
How do I know which major is right for me. Engineering or Math
A normed vector space is a vector space with a notion of length. An inner product space is a vector space with a notion of angle. A Hilbert space is a vector space with both a notion of angle and a notion of length, and so that these two concepts interact with one another in the way they do in everyday life.
Inner product spaces have length
No, that's only if you also make them normed using the norm induced by the inner product.
For example, the space of continuous real-valued functions on the closed unit interval has:
<f,g> = ā«f(x)g(x) dx
as an inner product.
Having angles but not length would be more like "conformal space"
But that induces the L^2 norm, rather than the supremum norm.
It's still a norm
The difference between Hilbert space and inner product space is you have a limit operation
Every inner product induces a norm.
(that makes it complete)
However, some normed spaces admit inner products which do not induce their norm.
A priori, the definition of an inner product space does not require nor mandate that the space have a norm.
But that's cuz those are two structures
My point is, the data "let V be an inner product space" does not mean that V has a norm, and thus, that V has a notion of length.
Inner product space ā normed space ā normed inner product space
how does an inner product induce an angle if you don't use the norm associated with the inner product?
cos(theta) = <a,b> / (|a| |b|)
only works if the norm is the one associated with the inner product
So on paper nothing is stopping you from taking an inner product space, ignoring the obvious norm, and considering another (or just refusing to do anything involving length)
But in practice this is not a thing people do
Is there some notion of normed Hilbert space with two compatible structures
That isn't just "this linear bijection between two structures is continuous"

hellooo
either that or it's the server

would you like to know more about God? iād be happy to answer more questions (if im able of course, iām still what some would call young in the faith)
is there a good reason to believe in Him
other than like self-improvement and balancing out yourself
like just the bible trips me up a lot
discussion 2 why does it matter
because you aren't supposed to take it as fact
what do you mean?
cuz less busy here
anyways
hm?
back in august 2023 i entered a new hs as you know
like the universe was created in 7 days it says
oh, okay
and in us history class we did intros
what things am i supposed to take literally
nono like doge said move here frok #1 for storytime
and is there a reason why things are figurative
ohh, okay
and this girl captured my heart as soon as she said that her favorite era was the romantic era uwuwuwuwuwuwuw
okay icebreaker
yep! thereās a verse about that! Iāll find it now
whatššš
what does this even mean
i never heard of
L
anyways the semester passes by and we dont speak much
since shes in a different group and such
but whenever i saw her sititng somewhere i'd try to sit close
wait ke me get a charger keep going
ok
then in around february we had the opportunity to send some goofy aah valentines with candy anonymously
it was funded by the school's leadership club
I found it: Matthew 13:34-35
so obviously i sent one to her
iāve also heard seven steps, but I havenāt looked into it very much
that's from the bible though
right
are you looking for a scientific reason (or something similar)?
idk this all is very confusing
then more time passed and it was february 27...since it was soon to be leap day and it was still the month of romance, i decided to do something dumb like bigtime dumb
partly
thatās understandable
okay
i'm trying to make my knowledge compatible with God if i do some day believe
okay that helps me a lot that youāve said that
what knowledge do you have that might conflict with God?
well uh
iām not going to condemn you for it
like i don't believe the Universe only popped into existence 2000 years ago
ohh, okay
I hear that a lot
because my chinese ancestors definitely existed before that (or so i currently believe, anyway)
ok starts here
friednd group u meAN? or in class in gen eral
I see
oh like both friend group and class group
in history we split up into groups
straight outta tv show ahh bs
ikr š
so, I will tell you that im not as knowledgeable in this subject as others
i actually had to beg for them to make it anonymous lmao
but I can ask my more knowledgeable friends about it!
whatd u even write in the note
nothing because i was too anxious
alright its fine though
i just inserted a heart shaped paper in it
there was a bag of candy
that was the candygram š
The universe popped into existence when I was born
u got her candy
aye
or it came w cand
if im being honest i'll probably live in a perpetual state of being on the fence that there's a God
essentially it was candy with optional note
that was the whole valentine
okay! theyād be happy to help
iāll pray about it!
and i folded it and put it on her desk before history class started
so artsy
i made sure i was the first one there so no one would be a witness
did u sign it
i signed it "6.1-16"
uhh but then theyd know u left it
if ur th rfirst one there
the numerical representation of my initials
cuz i was still being anonymous
ikrr
ok then what
ok then since it was a work day and the teacher wasnt lecturing
she freaking asked the teacher
she read the poem out loud
and said "do you know who left this??"
brooo why couldnt she jus keep it to herself š
she said she thought it was for someone else š
did u get ratted out
but the teacher said nobody forgot anything from the previous class
no i dont think the teacher knew lmao
do you have any more questions?
i did but really really really small
ikr the whole time i was trying to keep my mouth shut in my desk
mhm
nah no more, thanks for your time kai
so anyways class ended
headphones on n look at phone type of day !
okay, just let me know if you do!
me and my goofy aah friend who was in on the plot asked her "d'yknow who it is"
youāre welcome :D
absolutely
and she said "no"
and i said "well...i think i might know who wrote that"
lmfaoaooa
uh oh
and with that i ran the heck out of there
then a few weeks pass and nothing eventful happens
but then...in march 8th....
...like taht was the end of it
u didnt say who it could have been
no hell no
did she ask
okay go on
ooh boy march 8th
anyways
once we were leaving the meeting room
she walks up to me and asks "would you like to be part of the engineering team at a local competition?"
the way u rmr specific dates
mhm
i do that too
apparently the hs had banded together all the nerdy kids for a fancy engineering competition
wowza
i onyl rmr specifc days someone important did/said smt special or shi lkike that
so she invited me because i wanted to be a math major and i had to be pretty smart for that
ohhh
is she enrdy
oh
nerdy
I remember that the Soviet Union dissolved on December 25, 1991
and this is attractive to u
so then we sat down on a table outside and signed up for the competition
mhm
Chernobyl disaster happened 4/26/1986
u remember like u lived thru it
lolol
wowowow
and then after that i asked "did you ever figure out who wrote that poem??"
and she said "no, do you know who it is?"
bro why would u ask again 2 weeks later LMFAOAOOAOAOA
lmao cuz i was ready to confess that day
MLK was assassinated 4/4/68
anyways
i proceed to read the poem out loud while she pulls out the paper from her backpack
this is taking u a while r. u sureur not googling this stuff
or chat gpt
i had it written down on my own notebook
yes
im just thinking
so she verified that i knew every single line of that poem
JFK was assassinated 9/22/1963
ur redading ur poem to her
yes precisely
did she pull it out
yes
Valery Legasov died a year later
well if its in front of u why would u not
well i couldnt see her paper
on the sam day
o
yes
š
so i explained what the 6.1-16 meant
nerdy
and halfway through she said "it was you!!!!"
and then she couldnt stop laughing after saying that
but somehow idk it didnt seem like she was disappointed
Max Headroom hacking incident (Chicago, IL) happened on 11/22/1987
she then said she spent a lot of time trying to figure out who it was
but laughing in ur face
okay Iām done I think
and that she was dum for not realizing it was me
Ok i understadn
tha k u
ššš
i mean what obvious hints were there
that i kept trying to sit close to her outside of class
then my goofy aah friend kept trying to make us talk to each other
after it happened
yes
after the note happened
before she knew
so anyways after the confession
mhm
we still had to go to history, so everything went like normal there
then after class i rizzed and gave her my phone number and email
why email ..
idk
u communicate w ppl thru email
yes
im at home and i see that she messaged me "hi it's insert name here :)"
and then after that we proceed to have long aah conversations about random stuff through text
hrmm kinda
but then being the cringey person i am irl
i might've said some cringey stuff while she was there
my friend group is very sussy ngl
so we inevitably speak about sussy things
like "fuwwies uwu uwuwuwuwuwuwuwu"
fuwwies in my walls
š
ok ok ok you got the idea
this is bad
but the goofy aah friend from the beginning was like "doge stop you're gonna give her the ick"
ok hur35 in goin fall asleep v soon kin( say
ok ok ok im trying bruh
anyways so even tho things seem to be sailing smoothly stuff seems to start getting a bit colder
ruin
colder like well weather
colder like in our conversations
canāt type
oh
rip
okokokokokokokokokokok š
ok actually im gonna end it here
ILL COKE BACK FOR THE DTORY
OK GOODNUGHT
You're back
I love math and meth
happy 4 u
ur wonderful thank u for making me feel good about myself

hello
i dare someone to find an (a,b) where a,bāZ such that (3a/b)-(b/a)=10
,w (3x/y)-y/x=10
u arent the first one thats tried this
a sorta tricky way is sub c=a/b and then see if the discriminant is not a perfect square
im trying to find a proof
Proof is like let x =a/b rational then b/a =1/x
3x-(1/x)=10
And check if this quadratic has rational solution
can somoene explain me quadratics
You should be more specific
hehe
I've a small question
There's the xy problem
Where someone asks for help doing Y because they think it will help them do X
And there's another problem
Where someone asks something like:"Hi, can anyone help me?" instead of asking the question itself
How is that problem called?
!xy problem
Please show the original problem, exactly as it was stated to you, with the entire original context. A picture or screenshot is best. If the original problem is not in English, then post it anyway! The additional context might still be helpful. Do your best to provide a translation.
I think it's like
!ask
idk maybe that's a different server lol
usually a response people give is "don't ask to ask" and post that link https://dontasktoask.com/
algebra problems have x+y=10 and x*y=z right
yw
it's !da2a
the reason i ask is because of the lagrange multiplier
how is the lagrange multiplier even valid

No need to ask āCan I askā¦?ā or āDoes anyone know aboutā¦?āāitās faster for everyone if you just ask your question! See https://dontasktoask.com/
cool thanks
wdym
L(q,r,s,Ī»)=rā sā q+Ī»(12āqārās)
chatgpt gave this equation when i asked it to maximize qrs when q+r+s=12
let me rephrase the question: how is the lagrange multiplier made
have you taken any calculus
no
you might have to learn up to multivar calculus to really start understanding it, but you will encounter some optimization in calculus 1
ok
also
to optimize a function like f(x)=4-x^2, solving for x when the derivative is 0 is enough, right?
the lagrange multiplier combines the restriction of q+r+s=12
yes... Lagrange multiplier is usually for constraint optimization
yes and usually with multivariable functions
there's no constraint here, a constraint would be like x + y + z = 1 or something
How do you know how it would look
Seems like a hexagon and i cant figure why
I graphed it
.
don't see why you think it looks like a hexagon then
it is a plane
Yes
I dont understand, why "but"
like I can't see a hexagon anywhere
for instance, the region bounded by the plane and the x and y-axes is a triangle
if it is bounded in a box, then I can see why you see hexagon
but x+y+z = 1 is indeed a plane.
Now that you mentioned it its probably cut off š how do i remove this box
like, you probably see this
ahhhhh yeah I remember some competition problems being like that

ok
I do
Thats more reasonable!
right, Desmos has 3D graphing now
it wasn't always like that
I know
My mind was blown when i first saw this
It was the first 3d grapher i had seen
most of the good 3d graphing tools are the one that you need to code
not like desmos or geogebra are bad tho
yees MATLAB or something is infinitely more powerful
Unpopular Opinion: Matlab is bad
It is somehow one of the popular language among mathematicians
#NoMoreMeows
im wondering when matlab will ever support sequence to sequence neural network models natively
im coughing my lungs up from this dab pen
I would say there are more people in ML who is willing to write seq2seq in C than in Matlab
I do hate it yes
I didn't realize it was popular among mathematicians
my impression was they tend to use mathematica or python (sage)
