Leaving because of the new picture
Good
Byeeee
I have no ideas what the hint is about. I can’t solve nonstandard puzzles these days.

Clearly they're mad because the donut is gone.
Yep.
I mean it’s always been there and it’s amazing that it’s always been there.
What happened to the server pfp
The Torus was stolen
:(
:)
Hey guys! I recently created a YouTube video and would really appreciate some feedback on it. Here's the link: https://youtu.be/Q2p4prE7PAQ Thank you!
It's about 0^0
<@&268886789983436800> this persons spamming multiple channels advertising.
that icon aint april fools its april's W
nah
i only see one link posted in the last week?
one message even
whats with the transgender thing
i posted it like 3 times
is it an april fools?
bcs the link wasn't embedding or something
No it’s always been there.
oh discord search is dumb
people are reacting like fools
no
helo dani
Is the Game is Afoot role automatically removed afterwards?
No, but you can just unreact to the message
we will leave the thing up in its entirety for a while
Alright
so that late comers can enjoy it
Will there again be a prize for the first places like cloaks?
no
famous gamedev
oh cool
Who paid last time for the cloaks, did mniip have to buy all of them?
who

i think DN asked
clown akira

Bro trolled
yeah i was feeling very naughty and evil today
😭
you courageous cabbage
you are not fooling anyone
Can i ask why is the server's profile the transgender flag
Official that 2 identifies as 3 and that 2 + 2 = 6 ?
The background has always been, the torus infront of it is now gone because of the arg game
anyone here an aspiring data scientist or a real one
well my brother is one but he lives across the ocean 😅
actually idk if it's data scientist
cause he said actuary
hits hard
i guess that could be one, but i guess i'm looking for less a business-sided answer
Why is there trans flag for math discord server lmao
oh my god…
trans flag has been there for like a year, the torus in front of it was just removed
because it is also a discord server and one where socialising occurs
In general all the decent discords are left wing and have a lot of lgbt people
First time seeing it, joined a while ago tho
It's not part of the April Fools stuff
Yeah it's a bit hard to see unless you actually look at the icon
Anyways it's just a symbol that we're a safe space for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities
yep! hope this helps
where the clowns at??
here
you'll see some clowns complaining soon enough
i thought the server got nuked for a bit or something , should've made the icon a little bit more luminous xd
yeah it is kinda dark lol
hi chat
hi cat
in a math server??? unbelievable
oh i was wondering why this channel was so quiet
it’s discussion-2
deceiving
Weird to put on aprils fools maybe idk
Again, we did not put it on april fools
It's been there for around a year lol
Funny
I didn’t see it before today
Idk what to tell you
This isn't even part of the joke
It has literally been here for months
The torus was also rainbow pride-themed
@delicate pilot a vector space has dimension n iff there is a basis of size n for that space. In particular a space has dimension 0 iff the empty set is a basis for it. Such a space has necessarily only one element called 0. And we have 0+0=0 and a*0 = 0 for all elements of the underlying field.
I mean it's understandable bc the icon is small
and the flag is faint in the background so when we removed the torus it's way more obvious
Anyways why a trans flat
but I promise you it was there before today lol
^
Yeah they are also all welcome lol but we just picked one flag
There wasn't anything terribly deep behind it
The torus being rainbow is meant to signify all LGBTQ ppl
What torus
See #changelog
Does the worm role give access to a secret channel?
yea the torus was brighter lol
yea here you go
you’re not enzi
thanks eric!
lol
what ... i wanna be worm ....
Thanks!
sup, is anyone well versed in the finite element method? I'm working on an implementation for a project but so far it hasn't been going so well, so it would be nice to find someone who knows the stuff
did this channel become more active because of the name change lol
I think the people in either #modeling or #numerical-analysis might be helpful
Not sure exactly
I feel like it's still pretty dead
oh yeah that sounds like the right channel definitely
idk im new and im js figuring things out here
did you read my idea to switch the channel names or did it come from somewhere else
oh, this is the less active discussion channel, it's jut been renamed for april fools
I'm not sure who renamed it
oh lol
rant time
i always felt like up until a year ago there was a hobby i could say i was "into". like in my freetime i'd start doing this thing pretty much automatically and spend a huge chunk of my zoning out time thinking about it and whatever.
pre-2021 or so this thing was minecraft, like mid2020-mid2021 it was chess. after that i was very interested in math
but then like somewhere around a year ago i think it just stopped, and there hasn't been much of a "thing i'm into" anymore
Math
yeah no thats kinda true for me i was all minecraft in 2020 cause of quarantine but since i was broke i was playing minecraft on the education edition. Still love that game js haven't been playing it lately cause of school and work
Nothing wrong with losing interest in things
Most people are into a variety of things
ive had a bunch of other mini interests but those are the major three. right now the only things i'd really consider are like watching TV shows (i watch at a rate of like 20m/day average, maybe a bit lower). there's also reading books but i don't spend a lot of time on those either.
there are some hobbies that im like really into and there are definitely some high and low points of interest experiementing with that hobby
what hobbies/communities are you into, if you don't mind me asking?
what channel@is this
I am a chess player, a maths student who wants to make mathematics a career
why is there something named eta
I like listening to music and playing some games and watching a few things on the side
what music are ya into?
a little bit of metal, a bit of baroque music and other random things
do your hobbies have a strong social aspect (maybe e.g. playing chess with friends, some forum where you rec albums to each other, etc)? I feel like one thing that's holding me back from trying new things is the thought that i might never get to talk with anyone about it or that it might turn into passive/lethargic consumption.
When i started playing chess competitively it became more social i guess
Simply for having to turn up in person and then talking about the chess with teammates and opponents
Then just chatting about whatever
yeah just online every so often
Its not as interesting online because there is no one to talk to and just faceless oponents
ah ok
👍
i think i should have phrased this question in the negative. are there any hobbies you enjoy that don't have a strong social aspect? again sorry if i'm bothering you but this topic is interesting for me.
i guess
this is the only wrong division by zero "solution"
I don't know anyone in real life that likes the same music
What music do you like?
aight thanks
good night if it's night 4u
Well I like that music and as you also can see I am not mentally stable by my previous comments
cool
Bro im joking
I didnt mean to upeset you lol
Its col music but metal just threw off thats all
Hi peoples
please don't post the same youtube link in multiple channels

does anyone have links for a science server?
i want to know if its possible to upscale photosynthesis for the productionn of oxygen
and if there would be any added benefits to doing so
Check for the biological sciences server in #old-network.
Hi
IMPROVED pfp
impMOOSED pfp
MOOSED
Step outta the way yall the math guru just entered the chat
yo chat, should I pull an allnighter or sleep for 5h and hope that I wake up to my alarm?
just go to sleep dawg
hi chat
u right man
the server pfp better be an april fools prank
You do realize its the exact same pfp just without the torus?
Are you a topology lover?
Did we not celebrate easter yesterday?
What's easter?
I feel like there needs to be a room just to discuss calculators. I love collecting them, especially my RPNs.
No way. Sleep is paramount to good cognitive functioning. You will be too tired to think.
not rn rn (sadly)…would never disappoint a lucid tortoise
Good night!
Hello, my best friend. How can i help you?

guys
genuine question
what does "status quo" mean
google doesnt help
i dont get it
the way things are
idk what it means in the context ur using
but for history
we used the term
status quo antebellum
which meant as it was before the event
the event was usually a war or revolution
trangener
youve said this in a channel already
"My roommate just yelled at me, but I'd rather not confront them right now. I'd rather maintain the status quo."
whats the point of saying it again
it's short for "status quo ante"
it basically means you want to keep things the way they were
in most contexts, if not all
train generator
Woah this is the real discussy now
im going to kms
<@&268886789983436800>
Are you posting yourself being suicidal
If this is serious, please call 1 800 273 8255. If not, please do not joke about this
its dummkopf

and also ur weird
that was easy
That was quick
i honestly don't know which discussy is which now
lmfao
i guess i'll just post CS crap in both of them now
I'm the real discussy
I want to play with my food but they don't even let me
it's just instant slur and ban
Ah, the only reason I found this is that I muted the main discussion
c'mon where's the sport in it
the real discussy was ___ _______ __ ____ _____ ___ ___

I hope you will like it.
such tiny books
🥲
gone for spring cleaning, will be right back

until someone solves the collatz
until this happens i vote that at least the math formulas get significantly brightened
or the flag gets brightened
bc rn it looks like tv static
You rang?
(It's my research topic. :3)
oh wow
what happened to your pfp
...it's always been like this?
You should try the math server april fools puzzle hunt
It starts in #changelog
There is a series of successive clues
suremark, what's wrong with it
im watching u
Kind of a random question: Where do you all study math? I mean, physical location? I try to go to libraries but they tend to by annoying after awhile. I guess I can in my bedroom or desk but not always comfortable after while. Obvious ergonomic skill issue.

I HAVE THE WYRM ROLE
hi rage :D
Usually, whilst laying down on my bed
dude i fell asleep on the train and almost missed the last stop
Was this about getting the worm role?
damn, close call
Nope, it gets waay more intricate
the whole worm thing surpisingly wasn't related
I don't see it.
Nice. I will probably start doing the same. I got a metal clipboard and a tablet with all my books so I think I will just do that. Wake up with math. Go to sleep with math.
The answer is "whohas". That's my guess.
does anyone know when desmos art comp results come out
subbed to your channel lol
The wyrm is far more satisfying.
The answer is reacting to a certain message to gain access to the puzzle game channel
It's not something you would need mods to help confirm/deny
🧐
thank you! :)
do i post desmos stuff here
no one told me how i can get the worm role
L
suremark, seriously though, is this the first time you noticed my pfp?
i was wondering...
yes
i wish i didnt
,av
it ain't that bad
,av
ooh thats cool
Do I have to search through discussion-eta? Because the search feature isn't letting me go back to 7:40 am when the changelog game was posted.
Never mind.
It involves knowing server commands that I don't know.
I was tryna find the maths server and i was wondering why i had a trans server in my serverlist
Maths is literally gay 💀💀
W
not cool... Maths has nothing to do with sexual stuff
it's the antithesis of sexual stuff 😏
Bedroom
Yea
Probably most math majors use snippets
I try to type everything only using a-z, 0-9, [shift], [space], [,], [.], [/], [;], [']
Anti-backslash gang
Number row symbols also bad
<@&268886789983436800> i have a problem about being unfairly kicked off the server.
Can you help with this?
oh?
dm modmail
@polar panther
yes
trans things also doesn't have too much to do with sexuality
so math and trans people have common ground there
there was a brief skit at a graduation party at my alma mater where a bunch of math students told ribald math jokes, so I have to say that the intersection of math and things related to sex is nonempty
do u remember any of them
or have a link?
i only know one that isn't a basic riff on "haha analysis shortened haha"
nah this was 30 years ago
Trans is literally a sexuality
did u learn that on tiktok
I dont hate trans but i just don't think math and trans fit
No quite literally the LGBT system argues that gender is a spectrum and gender is a direct link to sexuality
beds are linked to sexuality too for a lot of people
does that mean beds are a sexuality
Beds arent people and are objects
Are you saying trans people are objects lmfao
i'm just saying you're saying a lot of words that don't have any connection to one another
But being trans is literally a sexual preference
How does that not have a link
god i just know i'll get reprimanded if i continue this convo
but no, being trans is not a sexual preference; it says something about your own gender and personality, but not what you're attracted to
okay... Have a nice day
Whatever you say
like, look up a single definition of what "transgender" means
nice music youre listening
i'm just saying if you talk so confidently about things that you have no idea about, idk how far you'll make it in math
i fucking love the stupendium so much
i found them like 3 weeks ago and they're so awesome
i'm such a goddamn millenial
lol we all know that feeling when we find an absolutely cracked artist
but i can't explain it to ANY of my friends because
the natural reaction to me telling anyone "hey i found this awesome artist who... raps about video games"
is just "wow i would've loved that back in 2012 when i was 15 years old"
god "whatever you say" is such a beta answer
i'm so mad
Real
Oh no
I am damned
it's ok there's many opportunities in your future to be humbled
i mean i know what that's like
i also love thinking that everyone else is stupid
but it helps recognizing when ur out of your depth
Oh, sorry.. this is not relatable for me
but a lot of STEM people just refuse to do that when it's about social sciences specifically
Someone else's stupidity is not related with my Dunning-Kruger
Ouch
That presents me an image of a scientist rambling about literature
i think it's ok to just stop listening when ppl with a background in STEM start talking emotionally about non-STEM things
u just sound like you're getting impostor syndromed
you'll be fine bby
Yeah, like that's exactly nerd moment
Oh, I mean I think I know I am often out of depth
Like, when I take a class, I need some time after class to stare at my notes to understand what it is about
that's ok
everyone does that
except the people who don't even try & don't look at the notes until the exam
Ah. Thought it was only me, and everyone else gets it right away
no no, in math classes usually no one gets anything right away
Aah
i just mindlessly wrote everything down back in university
sometimes you have NERDS who actually understand stuff quickly & manage to ask good questions right away
but i never understood anything until i started doing the exercises
that's where the actual learning happens for me
Ah, true
Yeah idk how this happens
Why did the server logo switch? I liked the torus better.
I thought it was for April Fools but it's still here.
there are delays
Oh, is it getting changed
yes everything will return to normal soon
timezones
i have a research assignment coming up and i don’t know what to do
any of you guys could suggest a (simple) calculative strategy game that i could do
assuming you're not a grad student or anything you can't really go wrong with nim
if you are a grad student or something maybe check out sprouts
hello
can someone help me
its very serious
it can save my life🙏
its geometry math
save your life???
yes
are you being held at gunpoint to do geometry???
and your life depends on this
yes
what
did you try opening a doubt channel
like homework
We live in society. That's all what I can say
i fucking love society
I thought they were planning a season 2
i love fuc... imma stop there
sadge
Saying that is an insult to desmos lol
geogebra seemed more complete
I mean sure geogebra has tons of additional tools as well but desmos just feels natural to use
At least to me
but is very similar
is there some substantial difference between the 2?
that makes desmos better for you?
i guess it depends on the use case as well, for what i'm doing, graphing simple functions, both are overkill for me 😄
3d geogebra is more performant
I guess the handling of tools and interface makes it nicer to work with, at least for 2D graphs
For 3D geogebra is the king
and you can link stuff in the graph and manipulate them.
interface of 2d?
it seems really the same to me...
you cannot change colors in demos, they are random
i was expecting to find those feature with right click on the function
how do i do that?
you can, just not intuitively, but u hold on the circle itself
let me google
I use desmos on mobile. Right click the circle I think
oh yea, holding
still, they look like a copy of eachother
except for more adv interactive stuff in geogebra
i was just curious about the preference
i am probably missing something
jesus, geogebra is huge. didnt know it.
need suggestions on how to title something i'm writing
the title is currently
" Partitioning ℝ² and ℝ³ "
but i want the title to only be words. would
"Partitioning the Plane and Space"
be an okay substitute? idk about the word "space" tbh, it doesn't really strike me as "ℝ³"
sounds okay
Partitioning $\mathbb R^2$ and $\mathbb R^3$
ik i can do that but i kinda prefer it to read well in plain text
For those who've taken Columbia Math Undergraduate Seminar 1 or 2, how much outside work is required (problem sets, readings, etc.) Thanks for your help!
Desmos can plot sums with x as an upper bound, for example
GeoGebra can't do that (or atleast for me, it didn't work)
Also it feels Desmos is generally a bit smoother, even if you sketch some "heavy" function, you can zoom in and out without much lag, which is not the case for GeoGebra
But Desmos seems to lack the (or some of the) CAS functionality GeoGebra has, e.g. I don't think you can integrate a function and make it show its function term in Desmos
You can plot the integral, sure, but you can't see the function term (though maybe there is some function for that, I haven't used Desmos much)
do you mean something like this?
No, let's say I want to plot $f(x) = \sum_{k=1}^x x$.
Desmos can do that
i'm assuming you want the expression inside the sum to be arbitrary
but yea, that's what i did, with the partial sums of 1/n
Hm, still seems a bit more user-friendly in Desmos
But cool, I didn't know GeoGebra can do that
Can it also do $f(x) = \sum_{k=1}^x x$?
yes, just replace k^-1 with n
Hey math fans!
Geogebra is the best my friends
Helloo
cofe cof
Hi. Can anyone provide me some advice on how to do a reading group?
how to structure it i mean
Its a book club
it'll be composed of 2/3 people and we probably won't have any overseeing from someone more knowledgeable
A math textbook reading group
have people take turns giving lectures on the material, once a week
that or presenting problems
we'll be reading this
something to keep people accountable
I see
Actually free
All the advice here applies
Be a hater if you want
It'll be me and one more person and we actually have pretty good work ethic
Ive seen this for grad seminars
Says exactly that
Is that necessary regardless?
Lol wth
There is nothing to organize then
Do you think i should invite someone else?
Why?
Reading and explaining the material?
Treat it like any other social event you try to organize
Just meet regularly and have something to deliver on
It really doesnt matter what it is as long as its on topic
You dont have to manage people since its only a duo
That sounds like it should work, but the person doesn't know english. Should i find a book we both understand? The person said that they can actually use google translate but that may get a little rough with mathematics. I guess since i speak the language i could help with the more math specific stuff
I have no advice for that but that sounds fine
Do you think i should try to find another book? Given that the language i speak doesn't really have that many good quality options
Fair enough
Hopefully the words in the book are simple enough
Hopefully
Do you have any advice to define the pace?
Because i have no idea. A section per week is reasonable?
Not that serious
Unless it is?
Usually things like that arent that serious
Why care about pace?
Hi
Hi
Fair enough, thanks for the advice
How you doing?
I'm good. Weren't you doing a math major?
How is it going?
Good
No I’m still hs
LOL i got confused then. What math are you reading these days?
Analysis mostly
Sometimes some LA to go with the analysis
Which author?
Abbott and Spivak
Spivak Calc on Manifolds
Abbott understanding analysis
how's CoM going
Cool. I tried Spivak and had to give it up. Maybe some day, but i'm probably gonna use tao's analysis, it looks pretty good
Ic
Have you looked at it?
Iv heard good things about it
Oh shit, you're already reading calc on Manifolds
Pretty cool
Thought you were reading calculus
ING told me the only pre req is Lin alg and anal
Lol when you get to college you're gonna be pretty bored
I’ll just do the next math
Good luck, you're doing great shit
Tanks
yeah it pretty much is
Spivak says it himself
Because pigeons
No one likes pigeons, you know? So the principle is tricky because of pigeons
dude
so what you saying is that the guy who invented this principal
cause this principal is a bit tricky
he named it pigeon?
I suppose
Yes, that is it
Can i ask yall a question.. whats the hardest math class youve taken
haa
well, actually every math class which i take is hard until the topic is too old to get used to it
Intermediate courses to any new subjects
Olympiad geometry is hard though
Uh, what class are you using Pigeonhole in? I just did it and found it intuitive enough. If you are using it for Advanced Abstract Algebra Analysis 11 (non hyperbole version: something further than discrete math), then I can't speak to it.
Hello
Mike Tyson
UNI
FIRST SEM
nah dude
am learning pigeonhole till the discrete maths level only
but the thing is that the types of questions which makes me nervious
like
Prove that any collection of 31 distinct integers between 1 and 60 has the property
that one divides another.
Yo
dude
discrete maths is fun if you figure out how to solve the problemn
Informally, first, we can agree that including 1 is a bad idea because any integer is divisible by 1.
If we include 2 we have to exclude {4, 6, 8...}, and if we include 3 we have to exclude {6, 9, 12, ...}
We can get numbers above 30 essentially "for free" because they exclude no other values themselves, this gives us 31 through 60. However, any other value we pick will have one or more multiple of it within this range. We can exchange then, one for the other, but the best we can do for n values is n/2 values that don't divide each other. Thus pigeonhole.
Of course, if you suggested the problem you're likely already aware of the solution, but thanks for the fun challenge nevertheless.
What does “property that one divides another” mean?
Like by what number divide
Can’t all numbers divide by all numbers? Maybe it’ll be a lot of decimals and stuff but it’s possible right
this is in the sense of without remainder
divisibility only makes sense for non-units and if you work with real (or just rational) numbers, everything except 0 is a unit
(thats what you just figured out :D)
Ohh ok
why chatgpt cant do math?
this question spawns in my head outta nowhere and it doesnt make sense
yeah but the data is in there i mean
sometimes it gets more creative than some ppl tho but still
it does mistakes event at a very simple equation
this is probably one of the cases where the 'creativity' (randomness) screws it, then
it has the answer but it changes something each time, so it's necessarily wrong
im not an expert ofc
this is pretty much exactly the issue, it doesn't "know" when to be serious
Not every solution to every math problem is there
It just "predicts" the most likely word/character given the previous text as input, so even if it appears to solve a problem, it's really not doing anything special to do it
yea but it gives the wrong answer to the basic equations
do y'all think they will fix this issue ?
and gpts will be able to do math?
thanks bro 🙏
I think that they’re trying and they’ll probably succeed.
No
i think an llm is still fundamentally limited in this
at best it's a database with a randomness function
Im sure it’ll eventually be able to do basic stuff, but I doubt it’ll ever be able to do anything remotely complex just due to how these things fundamentally work
u should see 3b1bs vid on transformers, his explanation is very intuitive
im morally opposed to 3b1b vids on the grounds that his voice makes me sleepy and i cant focus
grant does have a soothing voice
I heard that 3b1b is way too handwavey
just use a capital pi
I've noticed that too, I think he has even explicitly stated that
Yeah
im sorry bro
LOL
Haha
Hi modern
What's up?
this time it wasn't me
are these spammers?
the ceiling B)
see from here
lots of green leaves just repeating things that have been said before
wait wtf
They also all have the same acc creation and server join date lol
yeah
Are they training chatbots here
it could be testing for a raid
Argh
Banned them all
all good :)
they all were just random two names/words+number usernames
all created May 22 2022 or some shit
all joined today
yapping nonsense
hmm
smart
it doesnt seem like it would be funny to anyone
my conspiracy theory is raid testing
pointless
maybe maybe
that too
i think the goal is to be annoying
yeah but like id imagine someone has to find it funny to do it
either some "shock" thing or something else
probably nothing anyways
That's why I think it's chatbot training
who would discord chatbot train here
big server
Dunno, just that it big
also, a much more efficient way is to use the discord api to just download chat logs
and train a chatbot on those
no need to do whatever this is
thats if u assume whoever did this thinks optimally
oh, right
Anyway so, what's the transformer thing?
3b1b vid
u mean like a gpt
on deep learning
Is it how modern ML is architected?
Hmm
I did hear there is like reinforced learning and stuffs
gpt will give you a "response" based off what it thinks should come next
I mean, this is also how any ML architecture runs
Yeah, still
Ah, latex is one of the areas chatgpt is actually good at, I saw
its alright ngl
i ask it to fix stuff
but sometimes it can throw u on a wild goose chase
Oh? Never encountered this myself
What happened?
it was when i was still pretty new to latex
I dont remember details but I do remember trying to get some graph to work with tizkpictures
I ran into the same kind of issues with chatgpt while working with a library in haskell that seemed a little obscure
my guess is that it doesnt have a lot of material when u get too "niche"
They got more of these bot accounts, hmm
wtf
lmao
,av @kindred nexus
yo valley
they copying u now
HAHAHAHA
that's so real of them, i would copy me too
Huh, still going on?
according to discord search this message hasn't been posted before
they're evolving

Woah
thank u i hate making decisions
I'll just keep this chat open
i'm always here
lmao
that's not true i never go to this channel
this isn't comforting
also, i checked for curiosity
#discussion has 7,774,007 messages as of rn, and #serious-discussion only has 312,143
,w 7,774,007/312,143

Hahahahaha
me in the mirror every morning:
daily disaffirmations
B-)
25 times btw
how can you not tell this converges but get this (MUCH) harder problem right:
,w sum from 1 to inf of 1/(n^(2+cos(n)))
it's not, that series converges
^this really does diverge
does it, really?
how does wolfram get this but not the other one
yes, do u want paper?
i searched for that paper for so long btw
doesn't look like a trivial result
yep, def not
Wow
the one with 200 in the exponent is much more obvious
Maybe wolfram just guessed it
heck, any number greater than 2
,w sum from 1 to inf of 1/(n^(2 + 0.001 cos(n)))
Welllll I highly doubt this
yeah, that result is wrong
that one converges
you can have sums of the form $\sum_{n=k}^\infty \frac{1}{n^{1+\epsilon}} = \infty$ but not when the exponent is strictly larger than 1 + eps
valley
the famous example where it's easy to show divergence is $\sum_{n=k}^\infty \frac{1}{n^{1+\frac{1}{n}}}$
valley
but yeah, this result is true to the best of my knowledge, there's even two (three?) proofs of it, one being linked in the paper above, one being in the paper above, and a third i hazily recall seeing in a french paper somehwere
it''s probably possible for a sufficiently talented undergrad to solve themselves if they assume good enough bounds on the irrationality measure of pi
reverse classroom worked for me >:3
went to class and understood everyth cuz i studied it at days home before
thank you eric tao for the book recommendation
linear algebra done wrong my sergei treil, good book
no problem
How do you go from the irrationality measure to this sum? The question amounts to how frequently can an integer be a very mediocre approximation of an odd multiple of pi (say, |n-m*pi| < sqrt [2* ln(ln(n))/ln(n)] ) rather than the existence (or not) of (likely sparser) excellent rational approximations of pi (which is what the irrationality measure looks at)?
with low enough bounds you could probably find a 'low discrepancy subsequence' and from there the goal is to show that that sequence diverges
those also aren't my thoughts, for the record
i'm somewhat parroting something an old teacher told me while we were working on this
well (without reading the paper) if for example we're looking for instances where cos(n) ~ 1/n-1, we wouldn't need to look for distinct really good approximations to pi, bc different values of n might associate with the same really good approximation
but maybe this interpretation means the two issues amount to the same thing
What’s like the standard course progression after high school?
I know it’s like ode and calc 3, maybe more stats? But what’s past this
It branches out
So before you do ODEs (and PDEs) you would definitely need a course on differential equations in general, so like second-order linear DEs, Fourier series, reduction of order etc.
For pure maths you are definitely going to do analysis (real and complex analysis) and abstract algebra (groups, rings and fields)
These also then branch out and specialise, so differential geometry, topology, and functional analysis for analysis
Galois theory and representation theory for algebra
And then you of course have statistics, so after a first course in uni statistics (where you learn how to use R in addition to learning about ANOVA, t-tests, pooled means etc)
You would then do a course on prob and stats, so distributions and maybe Markov chains
it branches out after a while but pretty standard stuff early on is like linear algebra/ODEs/vector calc then some intro to proofs course and then the standard real/complex analysis and abstract algebra and topology
And then you would do further stats such as Bayesian inference, further ML (maximum likelihood) stuff
if you're more on the applied side of things some more statistics/PDEs/numerical methods is typical
Have a look at this: this is typical for North America
Europe is quite a bit different
Pretty much everyone in maths will take real and complex analysis, linear algebra and abstract algebra (groups rings fields) and most people will also take a DE course. Beyond that it will vary wildly based on your uni and specific interests and program
In terms of when you do courses (it's earlier) and how much of your major you devote to just maths
yeah diffyq or something that covers diffyq
Ah yes linear algebra, totally forgot
i cant get a math minor with my degree if i take diffyq
that’s what DE is
Also keep in mind that you could do stuff with mathematical physics, or econ / quantitative finance, or maths related to computer science such as machine learning, or mathematical biology even
There's also a lot of applications and crossover with different fields in STEM
'Applied maths' is an umbrella term and it doesn't do justice to how diverse the field is
yeah
mainly its bridging the gap between math and application
you dont necessarily need doctorate level math, people just study theory cuz they like it
Yeah the use of mathematics in applied maths is only 1/3 of the process
1/3 is about representing the problem mathematically: defining key concepts using maths
usually a not math centered undergrad stem degree will make u go up to calc 3 and linear algebra
And 1/3 is about interpreting the results in your given context
but then its applying it in physics and materials
Yeah that's typical for a minor, or say a BA in maths
Or like a requirement to become a maths teacher
People have different goals in life yk
cuz mechanical/aero math only goes up to linear algebra
Interesting
in undergrad
cuz
like
fluid dynamics
thermodynamics
incompressible flow
propulsion
u just need calc
hi
i did the math all humans mass on earth equals ~1m blue whales mass
(more blue whales than actually exist)
Replacing humans by ~1m of blue whales would probably be a net gain for Earth
how much would it fuck up the environment though
wwf says there were 250k whales in the world before whaling
Compared to how much humans have been fucking up the environment?
hi
yes, but that part of the question is implicit :)
Submitted a pretty basic question about smooth manifolds, anyone wanna bother helping me out? ^^ https://discord.com/channels/268882317391429632/1225154297948274829
<@&268886789983436800> if you can understand what this guy is saying
I mean, to be fair, I'm LGBTQ and I've just advocated replacing humanity with whales
So he might be on to something
replace genders with whales
is there an easy way to find occupied math help channels that haven’t been responded to yet without just sifting through them
not really
@jagged forge
bro, the group's new logo 💀
want to elaborate?
It looks really odd
