That's the point.

If there was a one-book fits all. There would only be one book for every subject.

Things are constantly being re-written. Many books are written because the author doesn't like the presentation of another book. Sometimes, the material is exactly the same, just written for a different audience. Sometimes the material is different, author A thinks xyz is important, author B disagrees and thinks ijk is important instead.

It may be overwhelming and contradictory, but the point of #book-recommendations is that you get to hear from multiple people what book worked for them. It might work for you, it might not. Over time you'll find some people are very similar to you in how you think and learn, you'll start trusting those people more over others.

That's perfectly fine, in fact that's how it should be. You should learn and develop and find peers who think like you. Likewise, you should find peers who think opposite of you and learn what makes them tick and why.

On the controversial topic of Lang around your comment, people either love him or hate him. Very few middle ground. (Except Algebra, that's kinda just the gold standard every graduate student has to suffer through)

Me personally, that's how I learn best, so I know if someone else likes Lang, (Like Xela) and they recommend a non-Lang book, because we probably think and learn the same, I'll probably like that non-Lang book.

On the subject of abstract algebra, there's a dozen options. Just pick one, or two, or three. You'll find one that resonates with you. For example theres Aluffi's Chapter 0, which has a lot of category theory in it from the beginning. If you want to go a category theory route, that would be a good book.

This goes for any subject, linear algebra? Pick 3 books, try the first chapter of each, see which author speaks to you the best.

In addition, you'll figure out how you learn best, everyone has an opinion on learning. We're all different. We're all going to say to do a certain book a certain way. Or to do exercises a certain way. Or to do books in a certain order. Or whatever.

Again, great for everyone else. These are all just opinions and options. The only one who truly knows what's best and how to do it is you. Take everyone's suggestions. Try them out. Then make your own strategies and habits.

H&K I feel is a good math-major rigorous standard, very common in this server. It's like the baby rudin of LA.

FIS is another very popular option, I feel half the server has gone through it.

LADR, the 4th edition has determinants, and the PDF is free on Axler's website.

The first two will have tons of people here to help you since they're so popular.

LADR is also popular, but beware the 4th edition literally just came out. Most people have gone through the 3rd edition, idk anyone who's done the 4th edition yet.

there are a few segments that were so dense (part of this is just the nature of math) where I had to read them line by line, sleep on them, and then do it again the next day and solve problems after, but definitely a lot of key relationships are fundamentally expressed. I got a Quizlet* subscription when I was doing linear algebra because they've got written solutions to it (some of which are not great (written by content-mill tryhards (e.g. people who couldn't get a math/engineering job) of the math domain), but most of which are good enough that you get it).

I guess it is because all the cool stuff I want to do requires a high competency in math... like engineering and physics. My Cognitive Science B.S. was like a copout for doing terrible in math and physics.
