#

So 18.8 * 10^k/constant stuff

#

okay so lemme think a bit

vernal token
#

d in mm: 4.0 3.0 2.0 1.0
Q in μC: 4.4 5.7 8.7 17.4
Q * d in 10^-9 Cm: 17.6 17.1 17.4 17.4

#

And said that through halving we get Q * d = 17.4

#

I'm not really sure what is meant by halving

#

Maybe actually the table isn't even for this exercise? They had to show Q * d is constant which they did

split pawn
#

"Halving"

vernal token
#

So maybe when they say halving they dont use the table

split pawn
#

Are you translating it?

vernal token
split pawn
#

Ohoh.

#

Translations often

#

give

#

idk

#

like

#

Not the best approach using translations

#

,w (17.4-4.4)/3

fathom swallowBOT
split pawn
#

ohoh

#

I cant think of a more elegant way

#

I mean

#

My mind wandered into averages... like function averages

#

But thats complicated

vernal token
#

Lines

split pawn
#

,w 2.5*(17.4+8.7+5.7+4.4)/4

#

Well this function isn't linear atleast

#

I mean I thought of it

#

For a linear function, the rate of change is just the slope

vernal token
#

Hm.. Halving

#

Maybe they took the extreme values? (17.6 + 17.1)/2? Though that's 17.35

#

And maybe rounded to 17.4?

split pawn
#

Okay wait

#

Well theres a way to turn it into a linear function

#

And that is by introducing capacitance

#

Well wait

#

Umh yeah

#

Doesn't matter lol

#

but

#

It's more like saying t

#

that

#

Okay lemme actually try it firrs

#

,w (17.4-4.4)/(1-.25)

fathom swallowBOT
split pawn
#

THERE

#

fhruewefwqhefbh

#

@vernal token

#

HEHEHEE

vernal token
split pawn
#

I mean

#

Come on

vernal token
#

They took 17.4 for some reason

#

But that's pretty good

split pawn
#

Wait what's the round off significant figures rules again

#

Hol up

#

yeah well

#

idk

#

I mean this is what I could do with linear functions

#

$(x)\cdot \epsilon_r =\frac{Q}{A\cdot U\cdot \epsilon_0}$ where $x=\frac1d$

fathom swallowBOT
vernal token
split pawn
#

Let $y=Q$, $x=\frac1d$, $$x\cdot \varepsilon_r=\frac{y}{A\cdot U\cdot\varepsilon_0}$$ $$x\left(A\cdot U\epsilon_0\cdot \epsilon_r\right)=y$$

#

Okay wait lol

fathom swallowBOT
split pawn
#

oh no

#

i hate it already

#

I didnt realise there was more to the slope

little vine
#

One semi egregious mistake I need to smooth over i think

vernal token
#

I found a similar one

#

So they drew in a line with those values

#

But where did they get Q = 51 *10^-9 from?

turbid ocean
#

Oh they want you to find the closes fit i think

#

Thats the line of closest fit or whatever it's called

#

Its the best linear approximation of those points

vernal token
turbid ocean
vernal token
#

Just by feeling?

vernal token
#

I guess yeah just by feeling then

turbid ocean
#

We'll yeah ig

#

If you've never learnt it

#

Just guess it

vernal token
#

But my teacher says this is more elegant..

turbid ocean
#

That seems like a guessable line tbh

turbid ocean
#

So, its the most real-life like method

#

Idk about elegance

vernal token
#

They had this table

#

And somehow got 17.4

#

As the average

#

By "halving"

turbid ocean
#

No clue what method your book used

vernal token
#

?

#

Lol

turbid ocean
#

,w ((17.6 + 17.1)/2 + (17.4 + 17.4)/2)/2

fathom swallowBOT
turbid ocean
#

Ooo so close

vernal token
#

Ig you could say 17.4 from that

turbid ocean
#

By the way

vernal token
#

since this is physics

turbid ocean
#

Thats just the average lol

vernal token
#

yeah I know

#

The same as adding and /4

turbid ocean
#

Oh you are trying to make it a average by halving

vernal token
#

They said "halving" so maybe they still did it like this, lol

turbid ocean
#

But you won't be able to do the halving method you proposed if you had 5 values

#

And I'm guessing when they use the world "halving" it's some general method

#

So we should be able to find the average by this "halving" method for 5 values also

vernal token
#

true

turbid ocean
#

Again you should go to the physics server and ask someone who knows about experimental physics

vernal token
#

Ah wait, nvm

vernal token
turbid ocean
vernal token

Oh, hellothere is writing

turbid ocean

#

Nvm

vernal token
#

Ah, though I assume they'd use something more straightforward than binomial coefficients, lol

turbid ocean
#

If there's a statistics discord you should go ask there too xD

#

I Wonder how springing with life that one would be

#

Also ask your teacher what halving is

neat lintel
#

I thought they meant halving as $\frac{\frac{a_0 + a_1}{2} + \frac{a_1 + a_2}{2}}{2} = \frac{a_0 + 2a_1 + a_2}{2^2}$

And you can generalise and show that the coefficients in the numerator correspond to the kth row of Pascal's triangle where k is the power of 2 in the denominator

vernal token
turbid ocean
vernal token
#

"Mittelung", that could mean "mean-value-ing" too

vernal token
#

These are just inaccurate measures anyways

fathom swallowBOT
#

hellothere

turbid ocean

Yeah, it's probably just the average

vernal token
#

Thanks!

turbid ocean

I didn't help you though

We all just guessed

#

But I have no problem in saying no problem

vernal token
neat lintel

Yeah, but I'm going in 2 minutes, low battery.

vernal token
#

Oh

vernal token
#

If we charge this capacitor

#

By turning on the switch

#

Then turn it off

#

Will anything happen?

#

Like protons moving off from the capacitor

neat lintel
#

Nothing will happen

#

The circuit is open

#

So current would not flow

vernal token

Like can it give off electrons

#

Or protons

neat lintel

If you connect that charged capacitor to another closed circuit, it will act as a cell

Or from the other plate

How do you guys like “reset” after a terrible exam? I really need to be studying for my next 2 coming up but even just thinking about maths is making me pretty miserable after how my exam went today, but I really need to do well in my exams after the weekend to make up for today

loud snow
cyan goblet
#

seems like it matters a lot rn but it's insignificant in the long run

glass peak
#

I mean yeah kinda but I also need to average a 2:1 in all my honours classes to be allowed to do the masters course

And it’s just frustrating because I’m so shit at exams and every class at my uni bases their grades at least 80% on the exam. Like today, I opened the exam read through the problems and I felt really happy because I knew what to do for them all, but I fucked up basic algebra so badly that I didn’t even get to do half the stuff, like just to put into context how badly I did here, I got the eigenvectors of a diagonal matrix wrong.

It just pisses me off because I feel helpless, it’s not as though I’m not studying or anything, I understand the material, but it just feels like in every exam I get too stressed and I make so many dumb mistakes on stuff that I know and hemorrhage marks

#

Like every class I’ve taken at uni I’ve had at least an 80 average in my coursework (which for the UK is very good), I had a class last year where I had a 93 average or something, and I just made so many tiny mistakes in the exam that I only ended up with like a 73 after it all.

And I mean today I’ll be lucky if I even get a B in that class now, I just dont know what else I can reasonably do because it feels like I do this in the majority of my exams

#

Granted not to the extent I did today (I don’t think I’ll ever get over the eigenvectors thing) but still

I’m hoping to take rep theory next year but it’s a semester 1 class with prereqs of group theory and comalg both of with run in semester 1 of the same year

Might ask about taking it along side and doing some extra reading over summer but it’s kinda stupid

cinder zephyr
#

the prof teaching graduate rep theory is quite quite awful

#

so I'm just self studying what I need for this reading / research-ish thing I'm doing next sem

glass peak
#

Tom Leinster runs rep theory at my uni so can’t say I’ll have the same issue catKing

#

Obviously apart from the fact that it’s technically impossible for me to have the prereqs to even take it

#

That’s a slight issue

cinder zephyr

genuinely the prof teaching rep theory next sem might be the worst prof in the department

#

I """took""" algebraic geometry under this guy

glass peak
#

(He did last time at least, it’s a topics course so the lecturer changes around a lot)

cinder zephyr
#

he taught AG assuming we already knew AG pretty much

#

he'd come in late, go way over (by like 15-20 minutes)

#

he'd have no idea what he was going to cover until class started

#

forget how to do proofs

#

and then say he'd finish the proof in a later class

#

and never finish

glass peak
#

Yeah that’s really really not good, did you at least manage to self study AG?

cinder zephyr
#

fuck no lmao

#

I'm retaking it in grad school

#

for sure

#

but at least I'll have taken commutative algebra so AG will be alot smoother

#

and I think I can argue getting out of intro algebra courses wherever I go to grad school

glass peak
#

I’m actually really looking forward to taking algebraic geometry next year, the 2 lecturers that run it are brilliant

#

And it’s algebra and geometry, so it has to be good

glass peak
#

Well… I’ll know the pain when I get there lol

burnt ledge
cinder zephyr
#

I've self studied some AG

#

from a different book that I've been meaning to look back at

#

Ideals, Varieties, and Algorithms

glass peak
#

I think thats one of the recommended books for my comalg course next year

cinder zephyr
#

It's a great text

glass peak
#

Is it good? I was considering getting it while the Springer sale is on

#

Well that answers that lol

cinder zephyr
#

Very very very good

glass peak
#

Yeah I’m sure that and Reid are the recommended books I’ll probably pick it up then, I read the intro and it seemed a little computational focused so I wasn’t sure

cinder zephyr
#

IVA is computational focused yea

#

So if that's not your thing then better texts exist I'm sure

#

But I'm a big fan of computation

glass peak
#

Yeah i was probably going to grab Reid because IVA seemed pretty computational but honestly if it’s on sale and it’s supposed to be good I’ll probably grab it, suppose it can’t hurt to see a computational perspective as well

deep mango
#

well it does both!

#

but

#

no it doesnt actually do both, it converts geometric problems into algebraic problems and then algebraic problems into topological problems

cinder zephyr
deep mango
#

but whatever

cinder zephyr
#

SageMath my beloved

glass peak
#

I’ve not heard good things before now lol

cinder zephyr
#

Oh what

#

Sage is fine

#

It's Python so it's easy

#

It's not super fast but I doubt you'll be doing anything that required hours of computational time in that course

glass peak
#

Yeah I don’t think my friends said it was hard, I think they just found that section of the course to be very dull

cinder zephyr
#

Oh

#

Yea probably

#

Fun stuff will happen in IVA for example

#

I'm taking two math courses next sem which have decent computational aspects to it

#

Planning to implement stuff from class into Sage

glass peak
#

You seem like you’ve done your fair share of algebra, do you know anything of non commutative algebra? I’ve never really heard of it used for much but there’s a topics course on it that seems like it could be cool

#

The course description is vague even for a topics course so it’s hard to work out what it actually involves

cinder zephyr
#

I've seen it used in algebraic complexity theory

#

where you can "amplify" some lower bounds of the complexity of computing certain polynomials by looking at non-commutative polynomials

#

I can't explain it concisely lmfao

#

but trust me it's pretty stuff

pale saddle
#

BROOOOOO

glass peak
#

That seems like it could be cool, I really know nothing about algorithms and complexity and that whole area, the very small amount I actually know is from when my graph theory book spoke about PvsNp and NP complete algorithms and stuff when it spoke about the travelling salesman problem

#

It seems quite interesting though

#

To be honest I think I’m just going to end up doing the majority of the algebra courses offered at my uni

cinder zephyr
#

That's kind of what I've done

cinder zephyr
#

So the computational model are circuits

#

But now your gates are field multiplication or additional

#

Or scalar multiplication

#

Instead of and, or, not gates

#

And your inputs are elements of your field

#

And so your circuits instead of computing Boolean formulas

#

They compute polynomials in F[x1, ..., xn]

#

And so now you can look at a polynomial and ask "what's the smallest size circuit I need to compute that polynomial"

#

Where size is the number of gates

#

So like the determinant needs a polynomial size circuit (treat the inputs of a matrix as variables x11, x12, ..., xnn)

#

But if you remove the alternating (-1)^whatever sign from the definition of the determinant

#

You get a new polynomial, the permanent

#

And so while you can find a polynomial sized circuit to compute the determinant

#

It's conjectured you need an exponentially large circuit to compute the permanent

#

So there's this algebraic P vs NP

#

And there's supposedly some cool connections between this, algebraic geometry, and representation theory

Okay so the thing is that
I started a business early this year and am making thousands of $ rn from it but my parents want me to finish schooling and I know am kind of dumb in studies
So should I listen to my parents or should continue with my business @everyone

ocean harbor
#

you realize that the @everyone ping is off, why are you still trying to ping it? opencry

#

also if you're already a business major then how come you dumb in studies? don't you need to finish high school or university first to become a business major or something like that?

I'm confused tbh but id say stay with your business

Huh, what, FPGA with python?

#

Why do you guys need to make the world extra cursed

pulsar pagoda
#

ask xilinx/amd

visual breach
#

Hmm actually jest aside, how is your opinion abt this?

pulsar pagoda
#

its trash

#

python is fine for RAD

#

and then u build the good stuff in something thats actually perfomant

#

like java/c# and if u care about perfomance cpp

#

python people are a cult most of the times

#

working on this has convinced me of it

pulsar pagoda
#

like

#

get ur product out in python quickly

#

get clients

#

make revenue

#

thats fine

#

but dont keep it in python

visual breach
#

I would like to restrict it only to prototyping stage, but opinions may differ there

pulsar pagoda
#

yeah I would agree for that take

visual breach
#

Once you get to production, you know

pulsar pagoda
#

its useful for rad on AI stuff

visual breach
#

It is somewhat hard to migrate

pulsar pagoda
#

but once u built ur product

visual breach
#

Yea, AI. Truee

pulsar pagoda
#

and that product is mature

#

move it to something good

#

like people need to understand python is a trash language

#

u use for getting shit done

visual breach
#

How does people end up with this kind of python cult

pulsar pagoda
#

but that shit is not good software by any means

pulsar pagoda
visual breach
#

Is he good at hype

pulsar pagoda
#

Guido is the benevolnet dictator of the python project

#

and creator of the language

#

but u know he could be an asshole like linus

#

but linux I can respect

#

because he actually has the technical background

visual breach
#

Yea

#

Oh wait

pulsar pagoda
#

and has debated academics like tanenbaum

#

and won

#

guido does not do that

#

So his position are on the side of convenience

visual breach
#

Yea I def get the random guy (not very proficient at programming) vibe

pulsar pagoda
#

which tbf are ok

pulsar pagoda
visual breach
#

Oh???

pulsar pagoda
#

its idc about hardware but I want to do hw stuff

visual breach
#

..is Guido himself like that

pulsar pagoda
#

No but he encourages

#

with the mantra of python

visual breach
#

Hmmmmm

pulsar pagoda
#
there should be one and only one way to solve a problem
visual breach
#

Ah that one

pulsar pagoda
visual breach
#

Indeed.

pulsar pagoda
#

period

visual breach
#

I mean, Guido is not considering doing hardware himself, or is he

pulsar pagoda
#

no

#

but his language is pervasive enough it has come crawling to the embedded space

#

im looking at u micro python

#

and adafruit

visual breach
#

Yea I think the issue is on the userbase side then

pulsar pagoda
#

sec

visual breach
pulsar pagoda
#

this could all be resumed to

#

python multi threading is slow even if ur doing multithreading and if u have to get down enough to care about this kind of cases dont use python

visual breach
#

asyncio has a guarantee that no other tasks run unless await is used. This creates an implicit "critical section" between any two await calls.

Wtf

pulsar pagoda
#

the joke here

visual breach
#

Well am I misunderstanding point of async here? This sounds horribly wrong

pulsar pagoda
#

is that people think python can scale

pulsar pagoda
#

their answer is

#

do manual thread management

visual breach
pulsar pagoda
#

in a garbo language

visual breach
pulsar pagoda
#

like

#

thats literally what their saying

#

thats the consequence

#

if u have to await a critical section in a multithreaded program ur going to need to share state

visual breach
#

Maybe it's guido guy's overconfidence that is making people try

pulsar pagoda
#

mainly a lock

#

there was a major bug in pytorch like 1 year and a half ago

#

that was making it so AI convolutions leaked memory

#

but like bad

#

to the point u could not consistently measure resource utilization

#

problem was down to the cpython interpreter

visual breach
#

Seems like the bug I faced

pulsar pagoda
#

yeah

#

my friend placed a PR

#

got rejected

#

he ended up making a fork of python and fixing it

#

and using that

visual breach
#

I had some mysterious memory leak that somehow kills the program, IIRC was impossible to debug

pulsar pagoda
#

yeah

#

he doesnt fuck around

#

hes a cpp/c senior dev

visual breach
#

Now that pytorch is more of an interfacing layer to the underlying library, doesn't this mean.. python sucks so bad at performance that it literally causes problem with boundary usage?

pulsar pagoda
#

u dont want to talk about that

#

it will get its users mad

visual breach
#

?????

pulsar pagoda
#

basically software has a big part of it thats just build stuff that clients dont need

#

so that software companies can justify their exorbitant revenues

visual breach
#

Wait, was that real

#

I thought that was a rumor

pulsar pagoda
#

bro I worked for a company thats about to go bust

#

cause all the clients of that company were past startups from the founder

#

that just cared about getting user growth

#

getting their stock up

#

then selling

visual breach
#

Ouch

pulsar pagoda
#

I wont say names

#

but one of their clients closed down yesterday

#

and they removed most of the other clients they had from their website

visual breach
#

I heard of making a company and selling it, but did not know they also add in extras to products like that

pulsar pagoda
#

sometimes they add stuff to the main product

#

instead of making the baseline product better

#

making the baseline product better could be making it cheaper in the operations side

#

for example

#

thing is

#

if u have a software product and you need to optimize for perfomance, power consumption for example

#

u would need people with actual skills

#

Indeed

inner orchid
#

bruh

#

is it worth/fun

#

im a mech-e major

last creek
#

I did a stat major as a ChemE. Its main effect is that I now know way more statistics than a normal chemE. This is sometimes useful

#

fun you'll have to answer by yourself, but math is certainly useful/worthwhile for an engineer

inner orchid
#

what would a minor consist of usually?

#

ik i have to take calc 1 - differentials already but what else would i have to take

last creek
#

You would have to consult a specific program, as there's probably some variation. But you're probably get a chance to take more rigorous courses in real analysis, algebra, etc. that might be very useful if you go on to grad school (in engineering or otherwise)

#

In my case, I've found that I quickly found mathematical problems that were not easy to tackle with the math I covered in undergrad, and to understand the right way to tackle those problems, I needed a background in RA/LA and numerical analysis that I didn't have

inner orchid
#

yeah at the college im choosing to attend it just says 15 credits from any 300, 400, or 500 level course

last creek
#

Then you'll have a lot of freedom. Look at the courses and see if there's anything interesting/useful for what you want to do with your life

#

A minor is not a gigantic big deal, so the courses and what you'll learn is the important part

#

It might be useful if you're planning to work in a math intesive sector of mech-e, like CFD or FEA, etc.
