where i study, the norm is to make the exam impossibly long. The goal is not to finish, but to do your best, then let the curve do the trick.

it's not so much that it's "fixed concepts and algorithms" than that you're demonstrating your "ability" to solve a very constrained, unrealistic set of problems that are not much like those you will encounter in actual situations. most "leetcode" contests are basically "spot the trick" puzzles, which means you're basically getting into the head of the person who wrote the problem (who already knew the solution, otherwise they wouldn't have posed it). in real life situations, the problems you encounter will not (in general) be presented by somoene who already knows the answer, and there's no guarantee that there will be a "trick" that makes them trivial

while i'm personally not fond of pair programming, this is a better interview approach than throwing "stumper" questions at the candidate to see if they can spot the gimmick

I used to think those who could play chess really well are smart. Now I know that those who play chess may have gone through courses. Because in my school, I have people who are incredibly good at chess (around 2000 rating) who are not necessarily good at other things. Now I know they have had a teacher teach them chess. I am aware those who might study or take a class on algorithms or related topic are similar as they have all these tools at their disposal to tackle problems. I, however, do not like to use this. I do not use a tutor. I just get satisfied trying to figure out solutions to problems on my own. I know that it might seem like I am reinventing the wheel, or I know that I am kinda challenging myself against known algorithms developed by expert programmers, but I still find it exciting to develop solutions on my own. It's like solving a puzzle or maybe proving something in mathematics that you never took the class for. Do you find it a waste of time?
