Idk about quite as free / quite as much research. There are a lot of research positions in industry with much better pay and with a similar amount of freedom, but in those your work is owned by your employer

so some people don't like the idea of not getting as much credit

also, this depends a lot on the kind of math

if you were to specialize in something like number theory or abstract algebra your options would be more limited

though not zero

but stuff like differential geometry, analysis, probability / statistics has a lot more flexibility in this direction
