fair, i read providers as doctors
it's a lousy system but it's what we have.. and like i said, it's way better than it was before obamacare
but yeah, no reason essential shit like insulin is 10+ times marked up
Reason is greed
and yet there are so many people who argue in favor of this shitty system
poor people who do not even benefit from the greed
makes no sense
actually about half the country thinks this system is way too generous, they spent years trying to repeal obamacare and they are dead set against any further socialization of health care spending
so what realistically are you going to do in that situation
true, even worse than I said
The forest was shrinking but the trees kept voting for the axe, for the axe was clever and convinced the trees that because his handle was wood he was one of them.
and a lot of propaganda
most working people have insurance through their employers and they pay a relative pittance for it (the employer pays for most of it).. whenever consumers are shielded from the actual costs, then of course they're gonna vote stupidly
you often hear the tale of the doctor and the sweetshop owner
(don't know exact number offhand)
but all too common nowadays is the fake doctor
i.e. there will be some unfortunate situation that does not need to occur
the numbers i'm seeing are roughly 70% of the workforce
but people are biased to think it must be like that for a reason and that those who do not believe it must are naive
it's true that part timers don't tend to get health insurance benefits
https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2022/demo/p60-278.html#:~:text=Of the subtypes of health,percent)%2C%20and%20VA%20and%20CHAMPVA
54.3%
there are a lot of grifters out there to be sure, seems especially bad in certain subfields like dentistry, so much unnecessary work being performed
which is more than I expected tbh
that's not what I meant really
that's a different statistic: 54.3% of people with insurance of any kind (which includes all retirees) get it via an employer
what do you mean by "fake doctors" then?
have you ever heard of the tale of the doctor and the sweetshop owner?
i don't recall this tale
Weâre used to thinking hugely well of democracy. But interestingly, one of the wisest people who ever lived, Socrates, had deep suspicions of it. To buy books on philosopy and other themes from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/mQYmze

I HATE thermodynamics and fluids
Most obnoxious fucking subjects ever
Entropy is not real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Energy is conserved in every frame of reference everywhere all the time!!! Everything everywhere all at once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Viscosity and turbulence are FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
felt
I hate thermodynamics
I had thermodynamics last year and I hated my life LOL
Like
I took thermo two years ago and it was fine
I didn't enjoy it but the professors did literally everything they could to make it as easy as possible
It was just boring
I think I just hate fluids (like the state of matter) lmfao
The most unintelligent majors I've ever met
Solid mechanics is so much freaking easier and intuitive
You don't want to meet the CS majors at my school
SAMEEE LOL
They're split between 70% fobs and 30% incel neckbeard weeb white boys who've never touched grass or deodorant

I had like a convo between them and they told me that I don't know what a proof means and kept showing me examples from intro to proofs
bro only knows intro to proofs đ
All the engineering students I know who know about proofs (excluding professors) only know of HS geometry proofs

lol
At least better than cs majors

No Ryx go back do some cat theory
Yeah
I don't approach cs majors in my uni
I know some people who did (were doing) cs
You could tell they haven't showered for a month from the smell

Yo

LMFAO
Here's the diagram
k so
Idk how to find dead state on this let's ignore :D let's do State 1
So I see State 1 is at 20 bar = 2 MPa
So I follow the 2 MPa pressure curve
To be at 240 C we see that the pressure curve has to be inside the saturated area
i heard engineer
So I look at my table of saturated steam and find the entropy (the bottom axis) or enthalpy or whatever to find where on the curve I am??
Hell no I don't want to think about it đ
yes you did
tbh the math majors in my uni aren't that bad compared to cs students now thinking about it
But the math people here are far better imo

who gives a fuck about labels
math is sports drink
This is just semantics honestly. Wikipedia gives a good run down of what science means and the arguements over it's meaning (tl;dr: mathematics can be considered a "formal" science like logic or theoretical CS).
Modern science is typically divided into three major branches:[3] natural sciences (e.g., biology, chemistry, and physics), which study the physical world; the social sciences (e.g., economics, psychology, and sociology), which study individuals and societies;[4][5] and the formal sciences (e.g., logic, mathematics, and theoretical computer science), which study formal systems, governed by axioms and rules.[6][7] There is disagreement whether the formal sciences are science disciplines,[8][9][10] because they do not rely on empirical evidence.[11][9] Applied sciences are disciplines that use scientific knowledge for practical purposes, such as in engineering and medicine.[12][13][14]
hmm I guess computer science is an interesting example of something thatâs not science per the âphysicalâ definition
despite having science in the name
Is too
i identify cheeseburger
Just wasted like 2 hours because I did head maths and thought x^2 + x + 1 was reducable under mod 2
Stupid brain that x+x = x (mod 2) instead of x+x = 0 (mod 2)
I feel this
tbh I donât get polynomials mod p
they're just polynomials over Z/p
like x^p=x mod p, but x^(n+p)+x^p+1 is distinct from x^n+x+1
ah
if I asked you to define the characteristic polynomial (over a general field)
how would you do that
function â polynomial
x^p = x as functions in Z/pZ but not as polynomials
wut
hmmmmm
I mean it seems like you could define it as a formal polynomial
but idk
Polynomials are algebraic symbol things, as opposed to functions as predicates or graphs and such
yeah I guess I am wondering whatâs the difference practically speaking, but maybe daybroken has a point with characteristic polynomials? idk I need to look at it
in finite fields
the difference is what you just noticed, polynomials can be equal as functions but distinct as polynomials
I guess you can evaluate polynomials over Z/pZ on things that arenât elements of Z/pZ
Field extension moment
So we have a homomorphism going from the space of polynomials to the space of functions
But it's not necessarily an injection
Splitting field in question:
yeah I get that but like why is it useful is what confused me I guess
Or a surjection
polynomials have additional structure, like you can factor them
is about applying the characteristic polynomial of A to A
right, I see now thatâs what you were leading me to
if we thought of it as just a function
Well the thing i was working on had to do with whether 2 was a prime in the ring of algebraic integers in Q[root(-3)]
Which it wouldn't be if that polynomial i mentioned could be reduced
But it IS
Well not quite, whether (2) is a prime ideal
But w/e
Prime ideals in Z*
it's funny though we often say the cayley hamilton theorem is nontrivial to prove
but it's actually just about as nontrivial to state properly
i.e. to define the characteristic polynomial as an actual polynomial
Guys, who knows how to prove a self-adjoint hamaltonian is consistently self-adjoint under a Dirichlet Boundary Condition?
Evaluate (-4)raised to be power 3 x (-4) raised to be power 2

hey guys, my school requires me to write an essay for every subject. and for math i was planning on finding the optimal putting strategy of a golf ball using numerical analysis. How challenging or simple would you think itd be? I will have to fill in atleast 12-16 pages
Standards slipping (probably to accommodate all the undereducated students from schools that we're flooding our universities w/ w/o bothering to give them so much as a good elementary education first), nothing new and the root problem is still the same if not worse.
Serge Lang mentioned it as a concerning growing problem in his Basic Mathematics (1971) too lol
serge lang was an idiot
whether or not standards are slipping is irrelevant to research mathematicians (or any research field) where standards are only growing every day
because colleges will take in more students for money - but that doesn't magically increase the number of spots for actual academic positions later down the line
or the quality of employees that industry seeks, in high skill positions
it's becoming more and more difficult to break into these positions of relative scientific authority, because the standards are becoming so intense
True, he thought AIDs was fake but so did a lot of homosexuals at the time, I think.
undergrads publishing original research papers, etc
if anything we should be putting effort into opening up more space in the high skill research world rather than whittling down the number of candidates
Sure, but dropping standards definitely doesn't help. The root cause is poor elementary education. Why try to teach them at such a late stage as university? how often does that even produce good researchers (not necessarily my standard for success but it seems to be yours).
Why did homosexual think it was fake?
Did it have anything to do with the government doing next to nothing about it?
The fact that so many students increasingly need to take remedial classes isn't alarming to you? the idea that resources are going into teaching these kids things they should already know doesn't seem unnecessarily wasteful?
I can't imagine that many gay people thought AIDS was fake
It was a subset of that community. First, I think it's probably a common response to just call something scary fake
Second, it seems to have been more in the early days before all the work people did in spreading awareness. I think some people just kept to it.
third, I think there was an idea that it was just a scare tactic made up by a puritanical health complex to scare people into having more conventionally approved sex.
fourth, I don't want to seem like I'm knowledgable about this topic because I really am not. I just remember hearing about it and Serge Lang just happens to be a high profile denier.
but yeah, that was a complete tangent that had nothing to do w/ my original point
Why would covering properties of vectors in a physics class negatively impact your entire future?
poor grades
I think he dislikes the fact that he's covering something he finds simple in a way that's not even rigorous.
This is not covering properties of vectors
They are making me draw pretty arrows
I came to learn physics
not attend a art class
I know how to use vectors, why am i being graded for my drawing abilities
to be fair the answer is always to just study it yourself at your pace if you have time.
Hello I just joined this discord hoping to learn
Welcome to the server! I hope you enjoy your time here.
Hey man, whatsup. I'm also new and it's pretty cool.
Itâs important to be able to understand the geometric intuitions behind abstract mathematical objects, especially if you are learning it for the first time. Is this part of an introductory physics course? And I donât think youâre being graded on artistic ability. Youâre being graded on translating an abstract object into geometry
Yeah just been doing differential equations and was like why not join a math server
They are literally deducting points if you mess up with the angle
they are deducting points if you forget to draw the arrow at the end of the lines
Are you talking about FBD
That's how you give orientation
Sure
But this is not art class
You can get a gemoetric intuition by just thinking about it
Intuition is worthless
Because we would like to be prepared for the non-intuitive cases
I can't grade you on you using your intuition, because I need to know you can do it the right way, the way that generalizes
talking about this
yeah, that is pretty lazy, not going to lie. Just draw the arrow heads, bro đ
I'm not drawing anything bro
This aint art class
Honestly been thinking about dropping for the past two weeks
This is unbearably stupid
deal with it
a line without an arrow is not a vector - how would one distinguish a vector from its negative if not for the arrowhead?
oftentimes you'll find that classes speed up in difficulty a lot after the first few weeks of people getting comfy. that might happen here
but if you don't expect that to happen, i think it's reasonable to try to take courses that match the level of difficulty you're looking for
i definitely didn't take what people kept telling me to take when i started undergrad
i took what i thought was appropriate, and it was, and i didnt waste time
a lot of college advisors / older college students seem to not trust others to make smart decisions about what they are prepared to learn
Ryc do you do much actual fluids
Lol
Or is it just setting up some initial context then you get to ignore the physics
Because I'm realizing that fluids and thermo are probably the things I enjoy the least in engineering đ
yes
Thank fuck man
Lucky
Oooo
ive been planning on it for years... we'll see lol
What level class? Like is it the standard mechE fluids class or an upper level grad one or one for math people orr
Hmm
grad level
but for applied math / numerics ppl
so then is class 1 gonna start with âLet R be a Riemannian manifoldâŚâ
Depends on the reqs for that class. After a while you can't start every math class with "1+1=2". lol.
The argument is basically over how fast classes should scale for the (average) student and how much time is spent teaching what topics and how these topics are taught (rigorously, intuitively, etc.)
it's much more complicated than any side wants to admit but I think that there are some useful ethics to stick to and encouraging a rigorous ethos which expects the best from students is desirable imo.
No I mean I was half joking I just said that cuz ryc said it was a grad class geared toward math students
Oh yeah, I realized that you were joking but for some reason I assumed you were using that joke rhetorically in place of an argument to show how silly his argument was as people (myself included) sometimes do.
lol, sorry about that.
bruh
dude is safe unless he chokes on his hamburger
lmao
I'm sure this actually has some use
for fluids

@vale trench I learnt how to derive range equation
ooh nice, but only range?
$$\delta y = \abs{V_i}sin(\theta)t - \frac{1}{2}gt^2$$
$$ 0 = \abs{V_i}sin(\theta)t -\frac{1}{2}gt^2 $$
$$\frac{1}{2}gt^2 = \abs{V_i}sin(\theta)t$$
$$\frac{1}{2}gt = \abs{V_i}sin(\theta)$$
$$ t = \frac{2\abs{V_i}sin(\theta)}{g}$$
Ჟ
$$\delta x = \abs{V_i}cos(\theta)t$$
$$ R = \abs{V_i}cos(\theta)\frac{2\abs{V_i}sin(\theta)}{g}$$
Ჟ
$$2\sin(\theta)cos(\theta) = \sin(2\theta)$$
Ჟ
$$ R = \frac{{\abs{V_i}}^2sin(2\theta)}{g}$$

How do good readers read books?
For a week now, I have been stuck on a single chapter of my physics book.
I read through it twice but still don't seem to be able to solve all of the problems that follow it's chapter
most people don't try to solve every single problem possible
that would just take too much time
you could try reading another book's presentation of the material you're stuck on. no need to hit your head against a wall for a week
I'm not a good reader, can't tell you

This?!
this one
Wild
Jean Gallier
something something advanced maths in ML
no shot you're going to use finite elements method, exterior algebras, modules or projective geometry in machine learning
I have seen ricci flow in ML
You can
Exterior algebras is an easy one
I can give an example
exterior algebras for ml?
Yeah related
If you want to do gradient descent
And you are trying to minimize log likelihood
You can decide to use higher order terms for the derivative portion and this will involve viewing the matrices as tensors but all calculations will ultimately be matrix calculations
Not an exterior algebra example though
If donât believe I can point to explicit example in a hw i did
Most graph neural networks (GNNs) use the message passing paradigm, in which
node features are propagated on the input graph. Recent works pointed to the
distortion of information flowing from distant nodes as a factor limiting the
efficiency of message passing for tasks relying on long-distance interactions.
This phenomenon, referred to as 'ove...
Also maybe fem is used for nearest neighbors?
tensor algorithms are like one of the most advanced topics as far as optimization is concerned
if you want to do it efficiently
you can write a paper on just one variant of these
@vocal ruin ngl I don't know shit about this but ICL ka hai to sahi hi hoga
no i mean that makes sense, ofc you would end up with tensors in that situation
I dont know how true that is?
A whole paper?
Nesterov does these kinds of things and I can't say I understand a lot of it
The great thing is that this is readable
Thatâs why I like optimization stuff
Its super accessible
I really liked linear programming

i explained u
hi
Where can I legally get textbooks as pdfs or epub not some drm kindle or whatever
for one you can buy them
most sellers will also sell pdf
there are some opensource textbooks
and sometimes universities upload pdfs
good profs have pdfs of their shit on their website đ

Why am I eating my dinner at 2 pm?
Also, I mean, just pirate 'em.
That wouldn't count as dinner then would it.
It is
Well I didn't know dinner applied to any main meal of the day apparently. Though it was exclusively evening or something.
I had planned to have this for dinner
But I needed to eat it a bit early
But now I am eating it too early
Truly a dilemma.
Thatâs illegal
It's illegal if you get caught.
Plus law enforcement doesn't quite care about piracy of textbooks.
if you care about this discord server continuing to exist, plz donât talk about piracy
itâs in the rules
Ah. My bad. Thought it only pertained to the actual sharing of pirated content rather than discussion.
yeah the rules donât say you canât talk about it, but I just checked and mods have asked us even not to talk about piracy before
and talking about it is probably a tricky line
Oh my god stop being a narc
The mods legally have to crack down on piracy
And that's the only reason they do it
If they don't see it there's no reason at all to mini-mod
I think discord's TOS should change and we should just pirate
If anything piracy is a moral obligation because fuck the companies trying to gatekeep knowledge for profit
hey guys can we tone down the piracy talk here
However, as a result of the discord TOS, I do not do piracy.
anyway back to my pirated textbook pdf while i listen to music on my pirated spotify client
For legal reasons that is a legal disclaimer
arrrr matey
I already have scurvy
which one
youre not racist enough
that part was a lie
No pirates were actually fairly anti-racist
At least compared to their contemporaries
oh booh
And they had direct democracy and far better worker's rights than the "legitimate" shipping companies
ive heard this, but i dont really buy it, also it would depend on the ship
depends on whether or not you consider kansans a race
Sure. Specifics may differ than the overall trend
But it wasn't pirates doing the transatlantic slave trade
It was pirates disrupting that shit
lets see
Anyway I can now officially leave to eat lunch bye
man i dont think i have any good math book pdfs on here
bye
it's not pirated sully

ok
ur face is pirated
i pirated lots of books, but honestly, I like holding physical books in my hands so I bought some of them
the artists still get paid lmao
no, because ublock origin does not give me "firefox premium"
wtf is firefox premium?
it's not a thing
because there's no such thing as a premium web browser
but there is such a thing as premium spotify

don't speak too soon
it does...
it just blocks ads
I have firefox developer cause the blue icon looks better than the orange one
it literally does
bruh
It's literally called "Spotify Premium."
you're out of the loop lol
you do get other features than ad blocking with premium

yes but lets be honest they're all trash
spotify sounds pretty L
tf does premium even give you?
yt just works init
high audio quality?
Even better, a walkman.
music downloads is good, but like
for keeping that behind a paywall
yea, my 30 bux headphones are definitely catching up on that
ok, how about i go back to Fourier Analysis by Duoandikoetxea
u also get access to unreleased music
wdym
they can't play ads if you're offline
and ads are basically the only reason you'd buy premium
their whole business model would colapse otherwise lmao
then everyone would just play music offline to avoid ads
is what ryq is saying
oh I see
plenty of apps do cached ads
they can just run that
offline = no ads is a thing they could work around if they gave enough of a shit
time to learn about the T1 Theorem
paywalling downloads is just easier
it would be super easy to make a client that subverts this though
yeah that's dumb
clients that subvert premium already exist
I'd consider it a given, they're trying to monetize people who don't care enough to get a custom client
Iâm saying that, building the clients Iâm talking about would be laughably easy compared to the clients we have now
wait, do you know any convex analysis?
you realise I block ads on my desktop by editing my hosts file. it's already piss easy
whenever an ad plays, just add that request to a redirect back to localhost
lists online of the servers the app requests from for ads so it's a copy paste job
oh and the client doesnât complain?

hello
yeah it just fails to grab any so continues
the barrier of entry is caring at all, but most consumers don't and will listen to ads
oh I thought itâd just force you to sit there in silence for 30s
Okay I agree then
there's an even more unga bunga way
ur unga bunga
just make a script closes and reopens spotify
it works!
clearly this is the simplest...
from the companies perspective it doesn't matter if it takes a few hours or a few weeks to work around their ads/premium, because once a workaround exists they cannot monetise anyone who would go get them
unga bunga means caveman bruv
that's what I meant
it's not the most clever but it works lmao
the trick is always balancing inconvenience in using the app with inconvenience doing anything about it, and most people will not lift a finger
bro its stupid AND requires knowing how to program that script
you copy paste into a file it doesn't need any knowledge

Nah homie you wrong

spotify is so stupid
