dense belfry
# mental stratus all compact metric spaces are the image of a continuous surjection from the cant...

Let E_n be a sequence of finite 1/2^n nets for your compact metric space. You can make a finite branching tree using the nets whose paths through the tree are cauchy sequences where the nth element in the sequence is in E_n. The set of paths through a finite branching tree is a cantor space, and you can define a function on the space of paths to the compact metric space which maps a sequence to its limit

silk pilot
mental stratus
#

😵‍💫

rocky shuttle
#

dense belfry
#

Nets and finite branching trees are good

mental stratus
#

what are finite branching trees

dense belfry
#

This but this is only 2 branching

mint patio
#

@rocky shuttle I actually forgot about this anime until you said the name

#

I think I watched a bit when I was younger

dense belfry
#

Imagine you have levels of the tree. A node at level n of the tree should be a sequence of n elements where the ith element is in E_i

wet mortar
dense belfry
#

You want to branch a node once for every element that's close to your node in E_{n+1}

#

So then the paths through your tree are going to be cauchy sequences

#

(once you've done the branching for all n)

stark pelican
#

I just learned about trees

flint basin
#

I like this because it effectively puts a limit on the cardinality of a compact matric space. Which isn't entirely surprising I guess, because compact ==> totally bounded, but still interesting

dense belfry
#

Yeah the limit is Continuum

flint basin
#

Unlike topological spaces, which have compact spaces for arbitrarily large cardinalities

dense belfry
#

Anyway do people understand this argument?

mental stratus
#

i don't 😭

stark pelican
#

You are talking gibberish to me

#

But that’s ok

dense belfry
#

The point is you want to represent every element of your compact metric space as a cauchy sequence of elements where the nth element in your sequence is in your nth net

#

And the cauchy sequence should converge 2^-n fast

flint basin
#

And because it's totally bounded and complete, these will (1) converge since cauchy, and (2) approach every point in the metric space?

dense belfry
#

Yeah

#

And you can represent these sequences with a finite branching tree

#

And the set of paths through a finite branching tree is a cantor space

#

Multiple paths could represent the same point

#

So the function which takes a sequence to its limit is a continuous surjection onto the compact space

#

And this gives you the desired result

#

(btw an epsilon net is a finite list of points so that every point is within distance epsilon of one of the points in your list)

#

(Existence of epsilon nets for all epsilon+ completeness= compactness)

#

(if you cover a compact space with epsilon balls and take a finite subcover you get an epsilon net)

#

Heine-Borel property seems to be equivalent to *X_fin = *X_ns

dense belfry
#

Shit I'm running late to the talk I'm supposed to go to

#

On discretizing fluid flow and Markov modeling of the discretized model

fringe summit
#

*X_fin are the elements x such that d(*a, x) is finite for some a in X

wet mortar
#

ah

#

it all makes sense now

fringe summit
#

*X_ns are the elements which are nearstandard

dense belfry
#

Oh okay this is nonstandard analysis memes

#

Understood

fringe summit
#

Basically: bounded sequences = sequences with convergent subsequences

dense belfry
#

That's neat actually

fringe summit
#

Right, so that it doesn’t depend on your model of *X is nifty

#

This implies heine borel since closed ball of radius r has only ns elements, so it’s compact

dense belfry
#

Wtf

fringe summit
#

And heine borel implies it since obvious

dense belfry
#

Oh I read this as ns elements meaning you have an infinite bound on number of elements

fringe summit
#

Like 2 line proof of equivalence

dense belfry
#

Not near standard elements

fringe summit
#

Nah ns as in nearstandard

dense belfry
#

Yeah I understand nowopencry

dense belfry
#

I really wanted it to be true

#

Even though it's an inane statement

fringe summit
#

What do you mean by infinite bound

dense belfry
#

I meant like you're literally counting the number of elements in the ball

fringe summit
#

lmfao

dense belfry
#

Using infinite elements in your standard model

fringe summit
#

Well I mean you do have your aforementioned cantor space line

dense belfry
#

It would have made more sense if it had been nr lol

#

Where n is infinite element

fringe summit
#

yeah I don’t get it

#

Ah I see

#

I’d write that as B_N(a, x) or smth

dense belfry
#

Does it actually exist?

fringe summit
#

Does what

#

Well, yes

dense belfry
#

Lol

fringe summit
#

In particular that’s also an open ball

dense belfry
#

I should leave now

fringe summit
#

We know heine borel holds on X, so uhh

#

I wonder if you can transfer that to compactness on closed ball of infinite size

#

Or something

dense belfry
#

Probably not because it's a second order statement

fringe summit
#

Well we’d probably be using V(S) type stuff

dense belfry
#

Yeah you'll need to use a lot of *'s in your transfer

fringe summit
#

So we can reason about iterated power set elements first order

#

At least it’s certainly s-compact for uhh open cover by standard opens opencry

dense belfry
#

Closed is second order, bounded is first order with parameters from N, compact is second order

#

I think

fringe summit
#

Well you can get some wacky things once you’re doing nonstandard universes hmm

Anything you’d get extra in B_N(*a) would be things that aren’t normal looking anyway

This happens inside a disk, the neighborhood gets altered but at infinity it doesn't do anything

but at the beginning of the semester I’d print out my class schedule, and plan out what time to wake up and eat, as well some important activities like studying

as long as you have a skeleton for your day I guess. that’s how I did it

but that’s also slightly pertaining to “academic planning” which I’m not sure whether or not that’s your goal

#

oh I see

jagged forge
# flint basin Yeah that's what I was thinking of doing roughly, like planning which books/clas...

I guess there is kind of a spectrum when it comes to winging it. Some classes i never studied, some classes I just needed to make sure to plan to review it for 15 or 30 minutes on the same day before class. but that was for easy stuff like undergrad humanities where you just have to memorize a bit. for more in depth classes I guess you really need to plan out blocks of time to “study”, like for real

#

for me, because I studied music in undergrad, the closest thing I had to that was practice sessions and music analysis, which was something I definitely had to plan to make time for every day. but I didn’t necessarily plan every last detail. at the beginning of practice I would just look at my upcoming deadlines and see what needed to be ready by next Thursday etc.

#

trying to plan out every last detail in advance could potentially be tiresome, and you might not even know what you need to study before next week. Idk how grad school works or how structured it is though. I assume some of it is a bit more open ended than undergrad?

#

that’s like more of a last resort to me

#

of course there are long term projects and you need to think about that more on a rolling basis though

flint basin
#

Yeah that's fair that it definitely is case by case for the class. I guess I'm just concerned that my poor habits will catch up to me or that I'l laze out of doing stuff
I definitely will not keep up with it if I micromanage, I just need to figure out the right balance that (a) is productive and (b) not overbearing

jagged forge
#

indeed, I sort of wonder if it’s worse to overshoot or undershoot here lol

#

probably overshooting a bit is better

topology was indeed my favorite part of baby rudin, at least the little of it that I did (though I think it was mostly metric spaces?)

functional analysis is based tho. I mean how cool is it to just take a holomorphic function and apply it to a linear operator like the derivative

fathom tendon

Ugh I've finally hit a math course where I don't understand a proof (HS Linear Algebra) and I've been trying to get it for probably about 2 hours now and I've tried to just like give up and move on but I can't stop thinking of the proof and just going back to it and staring at it

#

How do I just like move on from the problem, because I can't focus on my other homework without having finished the proof

jagged forge
#

damn I wish my high school taught linear algebra

#

did you make any progress or are you just staring at the page at this point

fathom tendon
#

I've made like 3 steps in and have been staring at it

#

occasionally trying to do something different but it never goes anywhere

jagged forge
#

do u mind sharing the proof? I’m curious

fringe summit
#

Or the problem

fathom tendon
#

Given 3 points (x_1,y_1) (x_2,y_2) and (x_3,y_3) that all lie on the parabola ax^2+bx+c. Show that the coefficients a, b, and c are solutions given that the augmented matrix is
Row 1: x_1^2 x_1 1 y_1
Row 2: x_2^2 x_2 1 y_2
Row 3 x_3^3 x_3 1 y_3

#

it wouldn't let me post an image but thats the problem

#

also i dont know latex so thats a rip lol

jagged forge
#

oh that’s neat

fathom tendon
#

and its our first day so like we definetly are starting off running lol

jagged forge
#

do you know the relationship between an augmented matrix and a system of linear equations?

fringe summit
#

I mean, literally speaking, you do have that ax_1^2 + bx_1 + c = y_1

fathom tendon
#

i know that its just the addition signs missing

fringe summit
#

Since they lie on the parabola right

fathom tendon
#

yeah

fringe summit
#

So clearly they work as solutions

fathom tendon
#

i have it in my proof where im at that the rows are equal to that represenation of y

fringe summit
#

In that plugging them in works

fathom tendon
#

I don't know how to show that because they are coeffecients in the y represenation that it means they are solutions

fringe summit
#

well, applying the square on the left to [a, b, c] does get you [y1, y2, y3] by definition of the parabola yes?

#

And the points chosen of course

fathom tendon
#

uhh maybe

#

I think I may have just completly drained my math battery after staring at it for 2 hours and now understand nothing lol
