Yeah the exercises in Tu are kinda underwhelming
Is that Lee's Intro to Smooth Manifolds
yeah
Gotcha, thank you!
there's another manifolds book by another lee but it's less popular
john lee vs. jeffrey lee, i think
u shld rip it and put on libgen in a year or so
angel in my heart fr
The cooler lee
hi everyone:) is anyone available to hop on a call and study?
Freely assumes you know algebra and category theory so the exposition is clean
Hey guys
what are you studying
Hi
lmao
rn just doing animal testing research and other assignments you?
electromechanics 🤮
down to do work together? ( i literally have no self control)
can i ask yall a question
im like ready to pass out but sure
whats ur question?
sure
wait can i ask how old u are i dont rlly like working w others w a large age gap just out of respect
This is usually what i tell my professors when they ask why I don't show up in their lectures
Hi, does anyone have any tips on doing math research in high school? Like, how do you create something useful when you don't know a lot of math?
What do you mean by that?
Or to be more specific, what do you wanna create?
do any one want to form a study group to study a book on calculus or something for data science?
you don't
I think it's more useful to learn/understand things than to focus on producing original results. Unless you're interested in something very down to earth like combinatorics it's going to be basically impossible to do interesting original research.
alright thanks
This is quite ironic, do you remember bullying me for not using LaTeX? How the table turns
talk a lot
You can send images in most channels, just not in the discussion channels
I only have 3 channels
Could i dm anyone my math problem? I need help :c
If any math wizards there id appreciate it
What level of math is it?
Linear, diff equation? Idk what you would need to apply honestly, thats why i need help. :c
Send it here, idk if I'll be able to solve it but maybe someone else will (or maybe even me if it's within my reach)
I posted my question yesterday in one of the questions channel but nobody answered me for 6 hrs :d
Idk maybe i phrased the questions very badly.
I dm'd you my question. If you could help me perhaps even just phrase it a bit better id appreciate it a lot! Cuz like, im outside of my element with this.
Hello! Can you please recommend any active physics severs for help in high school level physics problems?
#old-network has a physics discord

Wait does exercise make you feel pleasure somehow afterward?
kind of random but I have to ask: you have a rubik's cube as a pfp but can you solve it? and if yes, what is ur pb?
Uhh yes and it was like 25 seconds but that was years ago
wow same as me, my personal best is like 23~ seconds, but I stopped solving the 3x3 and focused on the 4x4
hi
pb on 4x4 is like 1:40
hewwo
@neat lintel Your discord settings are different because I see 5 available channels
That's different
Hit the three dots, and click on "show all channels"
That should fix it
@placid finch dms
i'm pretty much going to ignore all message requests
if you want to ask me something ask it in this server
Is that a formula you happened to know or did you derive it?
[ 1 + 2 + \dotsb + n = \f {n(n+1)} 2 ]
this is well known
Ah I see

What is the best way to study for AP Calculus BC?
doing problems
especially previous tests
but i mean actually doing problems, like sitting down with a pen and paper and attempting them without an answer key
watching indian youtube videos
Study math, get gud, then do the exam
You can get used with the format of an exam, but it's a bit dumb to study for an exam
~~every SAT, GRE, PhD qualifcation exam ever
~~
You are wrong
Studying is important
Studying for the sake of knowledge and understanding is important
Studying for an exam is not.
The end goal of studying is not to pass any exams.
you study for an exam so you can pass it
If you don't pass the exam you can't study any further
because you are gate kept away from progressing any further
Also exam questions are stupid and you need experience working with stupid to know how to deal with it
What's the equation for a linear function with a y-intercept of zero and a slope of 1 function:
y = x
WRONG
Answer: x
I hate it
it is the hallmark of a well-designed exam that can test your general skills without you having to specifically prepare for it
for instance, if you are good enough to read English novels from Charles Dickens, then GRE English test should be easy
and in fact that was one of the design goals behind those tests
however it also means that not every exam is like that. Some exams (pre-uni math exams in certain places) put an emphasis on niche tricks that will probably not see much use later
Megumi wanna exchange colors
i love that dark blue
hey guys
Please read #❓how-to-get-help
n*n+n>>1 python "golf"
>>> def Sum(n):return n*n+n>>1
...
>>> Sum(10)
55
>>> Sum(11)
66
>>> Sum(5)
15
this only works for positive integers
i have shi memory
do problems
i guess
Sum=lambda n:n*n+n>>1
🤓
i think using def is better in this context
creates anonymous function
gives the anonymous function a name
but if i actually wanted to golf it, it woulda been something like (lambda n:n*n+n>>1)(10)
that would f it up i think
n*n+n>>1 is the same as (n*n+n)>>1
whereas for n*n+n/2 we would have n*n+(n/2) which isn't what we want
to fix that we would need to add parenthesis and that's one extra character
Yea
n*n+n>>1 python "golf"
i need your guys's thoughts on something
suppose there's a checkerboard pattern
with black an dwhite squares
and also assume that it's a mathematically perfect board too
it has been fabricated to infinite precision
do the black squares touch at the corners?
or not
do any squares of the same color touch at all?
Good question. It boils down to: what colour is the border?
Depends on your convention, you can have any answers you like
depends
I dont think there is an answer to what color the border is
I dont think same-colored squares touch at the corners
what does touch mean
in the model in my head the intersection is empty but you can put a continuous path from one to the other
how can that be though
if you can draw a continuous line from black to black
couldnt you do the same for white to white?
[0,1) [1,2] dont intersect but certainly there is a continuous path from 0 to 2
maybe you have to think a bit more
the squares will be [0,1) x [0,1) or something in my head
you can also do [0,1] x [0,1], then they intersect though 🤷
so yeah, you have to clarify what touch means and then model it mathematically
then its obvious
I define touch as being able to draw a continuous line on the same color between same-color tiles at the corners
ie it means you can draw a line from black to black
without it touching white
then it will be hard to make them not touch i think
if you dont allow gaps in your board
or "lines between the fields"
say you have borders and each square is (0,1) x (0,1)
then they wont touch
I dont think they touch
this isnt a matter of what you think 😛
suppose one can draw a continuity from black to black
you describe your model mathematically and then you just answer it
then every point on that continuity exists on black, right?
yes
therefore, any continuity from white to white cannot intersect
the black-black continuity
well
ok, in my first "solution" you have points that are both white and black
maybe?
yeah, some corners would be both
i guess from a manufacturing pov you take closed squares and glue them together
and then every border has both colors
otherwise you have to make a choice and then what do you do
I misread the word continuity as community and was like wtf discussion did I just tab into

i love small-scale, temporary solutions to systemic failures! i love it when people spend their resources on problems they are in no way responsible for!!
lmao
hi all
im planning to combine all resources online and combine them into one large megabook
for stem, humanities, econ, and the trade schools, etc
from hs to postdoc
think:certs,resources to learn,workshops,events,groups,funding/angel investors/vc,competitions
Progress is coming along but tbh does anyone have any suggestions/help?
Currently im not putting links to actual resources for learning (eg:rather than putting edx courses for compsci;I linked to edx)
dm me if i dont respond as i dont check here often
no one will care to read a megabook
rather, the more complicated the topic, people will want lecture notes that get to the point instead of the weeds
Im not putting topics in there (well;more specifically; ill prob be putting links on where to learn a general course curiculum or book recs)
Im putting resources and opportuinites-think-igem,math olympiads, funding to go to schools, etc
Sorted by field
eg igem would be under stem>biology, math olpympiads under stem>math
so its easy for anyone to read and find what they are looking for
Do people use tablets when they read math textbooks? I was wondering if anyone know of any good software to sync up pdfs from a tablet to a laptop
I mainly read on my tablet because i make a lot of annotations to clear up some arguments (also i write out my exercise answers in the pdf itself lol).
@broken crown might know something
@hollow sundial why did you become eigenzeta btw
that was roketto's prank
when he changed his name to eigenrocket, i called him eigen#239485 making the point that everyone's named eigen
Is that a joke based on the meaning of the word eigen ?
Eigenvalues or eigenvectors or eigenfunctions or some other math thing
I know enough linalg and german to know, thx
Eigen isn't really used like that in german is it ?
nah. i was making fun of him for being another eigen
because linear algebra
no
trendy maybe
Time to change my profile again
baguette-eigen (again)
bezier is indeed hell
Tablet as in something like ipad? If so, what changes do you want to sync? I use Documents on iPad which directly access my Google drive which is synced with my laptops desktop so any changes I make are synced throughout the system.
Ive been using my galaxy tab s6 lite, with the stock notepad app. I thought itd be nice to synch the annotations up with my laptop (for when im working on graphics and need to reference some multivariable)
Google drive sounds like a good idea tho
The strategy shouldn't change. You should first try to sync your folder on Google drive. Then try finding an annotations app which can directly open the file on the cloud, without downloading. Not all apps do this, there are only handful on iOS, so I presume the same is for Android.
Then whenever you edit the file and close it, it should get uploaded on the cloud, and Google drive will download the changes on your laptop
Okay, that sounds like a nice strategy. Think I'll look into it more tomorrow (very late where i am lol)
does anyone happen to know a youtube channel with thousands of videos about math? (and medicine) I'm trying to find it but I can't remember the name. I remember he has a british accent, is lesser known, and has videos covering undergraduate topics in entire playlists covering entire topics. it's just one person (not numberphile, not khan academy)
are you thinking of Richard Borcherds channel
well, I think khan academy does have some good things. I think is the best one when it comes to a more easy way to learn because u have everything in one place. Whatever, I understand that taking classes out of your native language can be a challenge, and the same way works with the approach.
Why u don´t try to find another youtube channel? Or give another chance to Khan? There´s also IA now..
found it! it's https://www.youtube.com/@elliotnicholson5117
lol that´s new, he really teach´s math and biology
@errant ridge
What the fuck I never understood why space-time are related until now
That makes so much sense LOL
This isn't space-time why'd I say that
I meant like
why space is "curved"
lol
massive things bend space, true story

quantum mechanics is far freakier than (what little I know of) general relativity
quantum mechanics is just H = -h^2/2m\Delta + V and commutator
just like how classical mechanics is just H = mv^2/2 + V and poisson bracket
hope that helps 👍
how to not forget remarkable identity ☹️
Lmaoo
I mean yes
But also no
?
hello
hi
why can't i post images
just not in the discussion channels
why tho
because there's no need for images in the discussion channels
if you want to post memes go to #chill
the only way images got used here were to interrupt conversations
"back of RYC's bald head"
Is that Schroedinger's equation?

the entirety of the internet is available to you
H as i wrote it is the schrodinger operator. the schrodiner equation is ih ∂ψ/∂t = Hψ
ψ is your wave function or state or whatever
Wdym lol
it's the hamiltonian

I think it's passed
hi y'all
I need help!
Where do i go to study! Systems of linear, non-linear and imaginary equations!
Also where do i go to study that one method for getting the determinate of a NxN matrix by getting to a 2x2 matrix
chat gpt
No.
I figured out the 2nd problem. ( Finding determinate of NxN )
triangle matrix op
You mean determinant?
Yes
guys trying to finish undergrad year 1 maths in one month.. Estimating 60 hours. Is it realistic?

year 1 maths is only Linear algebra and calc 1 + linear algebra and calc 2
It's a question only you can answer
I think rushing maths is not a idea in general unless you're exceptional or the maths you're reading is something you already know in which case it's more of a revision
depends on when you started it i guess?
from start to finish in one month, doubtful
Im using freecodecamp.org
sounds like a software thing, not a math thing..
It's a website which has videos on lot of stuff right
Ah yes it also has a YouTube channel
it's on youtube
I'd rather recommend Paul's online notes or Khan academy if you prefer videos
can you link
but are they compiled in one place?
Khan academy doesn't have linear algebra though
For Paul's online notes, just google it
It's gonna be first or second link
HOLY FUCK
I'd recommend the bright side of math, too
calc 1 is 37hours
ε < 0
Yeah, bright side is also a good option and professor Leonard I think
ok guys professor leonard or khan academy?
Try few videos and see, both are pretty good
ill do professor leonard then
No not him
Wait that name sounds familiar
Who's prof leonard again?
Not Leonard susskind
My Son In Law Is My Favorite Child
Is that the title of a book? Lol
👁️👄👁️
Who can help me? What similar symbols are with /psi
There's quite a few!
its honestly impressive how someone can learn the entire greek alphabet inadvertently if they were at least somewhat interested in the sciences
wonder how math education is
i would guess the greek letter usage might be confusing
Yeah I learned the greek alphabet through math but I still forget the names of xi and chi mixed up
Xi is just a whacky letter imo
sometimes I'll forget some capital letters and start asking a question and realize I forgot the name and just stutter like an idiot
You just know when someone pulls out the ( \Xi ) you're in for some shit
dirichlettt
lmao the BOX
Bro, at that point, might ask well go with Chinese
Look, not even that far off
My handwriting is horrible, and it cannot distinguish psi from phi. Sometimes I write whatever, and never read the actual text. My head just fills in the blank.
This is why I Tex everything as soon as possible
I wouldn't say my handwriting's bad but it's a courtesy to myself 3 months down the road cramming for exams
My notes are for the sake of writing 😄
I can reproduce pretty much anything important I ever wrote. I memorise better when I write it down, but otherwise I don't really need notes.
i do this
even in class
just gets problematic if it is like
graph theory
orr anything that requires drawing
like i am not gonna tikz mid class
i am not insane
I use mathcha and quiver for my tikz diagrams
It's been years since I've actually written a line of tikz and I have never looked back
yeah quiver is nice but what is mathcha
i just looked it up
seems like word but more latex-y?
What is a TKX diagram
You can add drawing boxes and then export those to tikz code
oh what thats cool then
wait thats mighty useful now that i think about it wow
will keep that in mind
might actually be very helpful for future classes lol
Another one recruited.
yeah i mean i also never really was interested in tikzing manually
waay too inefficient for what its worth
I hear you can also use inkscape to convert photos of sketches into a .svg file and you can like change the line colors and strokes etc
Never used it before but it seems interesting
seems
way too good to be true
but honestly wouldn't be surprised i guess
wtf
you expect the people here to be clairvoyent to know
sounds like one of those 'takes more man hours than its worth' deals
tikz moment
i used to use inkscape to draw diagrams for my Insight papers
then my lazy bitch nature caught up with me
My lawyer has advised me not to answer this question.
im my own lawyer
I usually try to avoid directly using tikz code if I can because of the compiling times
Most projects I've had have been fine with me just importing a png from mathcha
mmmm
holy shit though mathcha sure does take a whole lot more lines
than manually doing it
can i use it to draw feynman diagrams
Ugh, feynman diagrams
Tbh, the only thing painful about LaTex is figures. Diagrams are Ok, but try working with spatial geometry, e.g. polytopes, and you'll suffer immediately
Probably, there's a whole bunch of premade drag and drop components that can snap together at certain points
Most of the stuff I have ever needed to do in tikz mathcha can do decently
hmmm
I almost gave up and went with hand-drawing my thesis.
I abuse the hell out of \vspace even though I should probably do something smarter
LOL ONE OF US
LETS GO
@placid finch another \vs and \hp believer
u can!!
Oh yeah the tutorial page I forgot about that
i use vspace and hspace nonsparingly to make things look pretty then have to edit a line three paragraphs up and it makes me want to throw up
\vspace is a sin
they hated him for saying the truth...
"there are better solutions" they all take more time than \vspace{0.5cm}
I'll change my research area if I have to make these diagrams in Latex
Ah but you see I've been shilling a website that lets you do these in LaTeX without wanting to die for the past half hour
this image is from a docpage for a wysiwyg latex thing
You mean Lyx?
lyx
I love Lyx...sometimes it troubles when have to deal with class files or preamble
i dont think ull ever catch me using an editor to type out a full document
Online WYSIWYG Mathematics Editor (Equation Editor), fast and powerful Editing features, inputting Normal text, Math symbols, and drawing Graph/Diagram in one single editor, help writing Math Document much easier. Export to Latex, Tikz, SVG, or Image (PNG).
I can not find any real mention of advanced users using this
important would be the ability to insert any raw latex code or handle biblatex
I don't see any mention of biblatex here
presumably it would be a good tool to create tikz stuff but then just use LyX for full latex compliance
\vspace
for a sec i was scared you were doing categorical qft
heyyyy me and a friend are thinking of doing a small study group for LA using axler's linear algebra done right, anyone down to join? we'll discuss lots of challenging problems
good idea
<@&268886789983436800>
Got it
Can anyone give me the tldr on how analytic number theory works
how do you use calculus to study integers
all I know is you guys have weird functions defined as series and somehow they do cool things
No one knows
commute those graphs
Look up the product formula for the Riemann zeta function

I guess you talk about infinite series and infinite things mostly in analytic NT?
It's a long way to extrapolate, and i hate that ppl keep referring to that infinite product, as if anything with primes will be relevant
No that's genuinely where analytic number theory comes from
Obviously there's more connections but that was the first result that made people consider applying analytic techniques at all
I won't call it that way tbh
To me, it's always Dirichlet's theorem that was the start of it all
Hmm
Dirichlets theorem is a direct generalization of the result I mentioned about the Riemann zeta function
And Legendre initially conjectured it because of said fact
(it came like a century later)
My point stands
Where did the product formula come from?
That seems like such an
unnatural
function
Read the proof
Sure, lambda calculus predated Turing machine, doesn't mean it's the origin of modern CS
My point still stands
I mean we literally have a big flashy and useful result that was generalized as the foundation of the field
Turing machines are not an obvious generalization of lambda calculus
They're a new idea
Dirichlets theorem is the natural generalization of the product formula for zeta
Furthermore the Riemann zeta function is like obviously analytic
Whereas if someone just sees the statement of Dirichlet it's probably not clear at first how analytic techniques apply
That product literally came from Euler who played with the sum after he solved Basel's problem. It's a very long stretch to call it the origin of analytical NT. Beside computing the probability of two numbers being coprime, it's not significantly involved.
Unless you've seen that concrete example
I mean sure the field wasn't born overnight, ring theory wasn't a real field until the 1900s either despite the work of Galois
But I still think it's safe to say ring theory was born with Galois
It's just that these things take a while to go from "result on the cutting edge" to "enough work has been done to form a corpus that makes it a distinct field"
Turue, but Galois showed how modern algebra can be relevant to Maths as a field, by proving something nontrivial (constructing the polynomials non-solvable by radicals). That infinite product to me is nothing but a rather quirky remark, a corollary.
Dirichlet first demonstrated how it can be involved as a field, showing something very random, outside the field, and nontrivial.
Okay go from Dirichlets theorem to explaining why analysis is relevant without referencing a zeta function
The statement of dirichlets theorem is very discrete
Did you want me to say "look at this not obviously analytic result and go from there"
And this is “where analytic number theory comes from” because we’ve now related primes to a cute series (which are objects we can fuck around with a lot with analysis)
the feathers of a bird are actually a bee on the tip of the earth drinking wine'
Studying math can be overwhelming for me as I have ADHD. Do you have any advice?
What’s a segmentttt
You have to sort of enjoy it
If you like something it’s easier to focus
And for me (not sure if this applies to you) but it has to be easy access, like right in front of me
If I have to navigate to some website, log in, (insert 10 other steps), and then wait for the page to load just to study, and then have to actually focus on the material it’s just not gonna happen
Its the proof of Dirichlet's theorem that megumi is referring to
Dirichlet's proof
At zeta(1) it diverges as the harmonic series
That proves there are infinitely many prunes
Lol auto correct
Euler product is really an algebraic fact
Dirichlet recognized that this analytic proof of the infinitude of primes could be pushed further, but on it's own it is a cool result by Euler, not just trivia
Analytic number theory is really more about methods used to solve problems. like you can prove results about algebraic objects (say primes for example) using analytic methods. The 'analytic method' used to prove infinite of primes is really trivial, just note a harmonic series diverges. So I agree with megumi that that doesn't seem like a good place to say where analytic nt started. Dirichlet's proof of primes in arithmetic progressions however introduced a lot of nontrivial analytic methods for the first time, so I think that's a better place to say where analytic nt started
nonsense
euler opened up a completely new way to show there are infinitely many primes
dirichlet and dedekind built on that
it's such a fundamental result that it's easy to take for granted, but building all of that machinery from scratch is totally nontrivial
Its disingenuous to say dirichlet is merely building on Euler's proof. He laid the groundwork for analytic nt with his proof
The first sentence in Harold Davenport's Multiplicative Number Theory is
"Analytic number theory may be said to begin with the work of Dirichlet, and in particular with Dirichlet's memoir of 1837 on the existence of primes in a given arithmetic progression."
Guys I have a online test and I need help
Anyone familiar with the equal values method?
we are not allowed to help you with exams
anyone know good places to learn math (algebra and high school geometry)
khan academy
Do university precalc teachers let you use calculus for some problems
Like finding vertex of parabola, just take the first derivative and set y' to 0 and solve for x
Alright whats a linear functional
linear map from a vector space to its base field
yeah that was pretty simple
How to prove every vector space has a basis in ZFC
No, you think you learnt set theory in 10 mins

Also, you think you learned LA in 15 mins
Lmaoo, I knew there was such a phrase, but I couldn't recall where I read it
Boy, then why are you worried?
It's a review to see what you know and what you need to study a bit to remember. Not a race toward A+.
Where can I find a depository of old math articles
Tryna find an old publication but it seems to be quite obscure
dont think there is such a thing
zotero can sometimes find them with a doi
other than that university libraries
Damn
also depends what you mean by old 😄
arxiv was apparently launched in 1991 and its the standard repository for math preprints for a while now
is 1903 old ?
yeah, thats very old

What journal is it? If it's famous enough a library may hold public scans of it, which you can probably redistribute without much issue because that age it's public domain
Lemme send the name
so true...
unless its very famous i dont think you will find public scans
though yeah, this can be redistributed
and if you have some kind of university affiliaten your university either has it or can get a copy of it most likely
(though i think any math paper from 1903 will be unreadable to a modern audience
)
E. Landau, "Über die Maximalordnung der Permutationen gegebenen Grades [On the maximal order of permutations of given degree]", Arch. Math. Phys. Ser. 3, vol. 5, 1903
if you are in the US this should work: https://books.google.de/books?id=-fsLAAAAYAAJ&redir_esc=y
oh wait, you can have direct links nice
@cunning compass
i was obviously joking
but the operations aren't that hard to learn
I need to prove that if n is the square of an integer then 2n is not the square of an integer
I chose a proof by the absurd but I realize that I struggle to demonstrate that 2* k * k = j*j is absurd
someone can help me pls ?
2 = (j/k)^2
yes and ?
.................
j and k can be equals to 1
....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
2 = (1/1)*2
4n would be hint hint
thanks
hi guys is there any way to get dxdy without using the Jacobian? when solving the gaussian integral using polar coordinates
no
dayum
I don't even know what this question means if it makes you feel better.
So I am not sure if the answer is yes or no.
When you change coordinates you must use the jacobian
The only way to avoid jacobian is to not change your coordinate system
could you treat r and θ as just another variables instead of coordinates?
Eh
How does that bypass using the jacobian
is it possible to take x=rcostheta and y=rsintheta and differentiate those somehow to get dxdy
Real
Please don't treat math as magic and learn what things mean
I know but I mean without the determinant and the formula
Do it and you will reinvent the jacobian
you’d ultimately just be relabeling the jacobian
Cuz dx is scaled by the Jacobian(dy/dx)
Literally the derivative
Mathmaniac has a pog video on it
I would also recommend 3b1b's last video on essence of calculus
im taking multi var right now and watching this feels so liberating as remember laboring immensely to get to the same intuition he talks about. My confidence for my final tomorrow spiked a bit higher haha so thank you for this
Does anyone here prefer paper straws to plastic
in terms of not lasting 10000 yaers in a landfill or the ocean, i definitely prefer paper
it's a suboptimal "straw" experience though
Metal straws
Ok, I can see that, however does it not bother you when a restaurant serves you a drink in a plastic cup with a paper straw
Just commit or don’t
Seems like a half measure
yea that just seems stupid
Literally at 7-11 I got a slushie in a plastic cup but they had paper scoop straws. Lol
Like it feels like virtue signalling from some of these companies
At least places like McDonald’s have mostly compostable waste. Yet they still don’t
Basically all the food is shipped in massive plastic bags
corporations have always made climate change seem like an individual issue
as if it's not the multi billionaire corporations that are emitting 70-80% of the emissions we are having right now
sighhh

Hi
Hi
Hi
So mhm
That was interesting
How can they do that arguing like that I don’t even get it
But ima go to bed homie ttyl
Goodnight
kindly read this https://dontasktoask.com/ thank you
I know only 5+7
whats 5+7
I think it's 11.
debatable
Someone does
Algebraic graph theory is crazy dense.
Can I have a sample of quantitative exams questions?
this seems like a google-able thing
???
Does anyone know of any site/server where one can practice giving a talk?

You can sign up to give a talk in this server
If you're comfortable with that
No lie they are a universal experience to experience 😌

hey guys, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but do you think calc 2 or 3 is harder (i live in US) so calc 2 is more integration, series, and parametric/polar equations and calc 3 is multivariable calculus i think i havent taken it
For me Calc 2 was harder because of series and stuff. Calc 3 is vector Calc + Murtivariable functions
i actually liked series a lot i think i was good at them i scored best on that unit test than any other
im getting a lot of conflicting information some people say its easier than calc 1 some say its hard so idk
i will research some calc 3 topics and see how they are, thank you for the info though
I liked them too, but I couldn't memorize all shortcuts and operations for them
Do you use Thomas' Calculus?
i dont think so
According to Thomas' textbook the topics for calc 2 are:
- Vectors and 3d coordinates
- Vector functions and Space lines
- Partial derivatives
- Multiple integrals
- Vector fields
- Integration in vector fields
👀 thats definitely not what i learned in calc 2
maybe i know the topics but i just dont call them this
i dont know what vectors are, that was never mentioned in my course
Have you taken physics?
uhhh not at a college level
The idea of a vector in calc is the same as in physics and it's a good analogy to learn operations with it
Same arrows with magnitude and direction
so something that is moving?
so calc 3 is essentially more in depth applications of physics?
Yes and no, you don't directly apply equation to physics, but for some topics it's good visualization of whatever the hell is happening
Physics is applied math anyway
okay yeah, i kinda asked that question wrong i understand what you mean
so far ive seen potential applications of what im learning in physics or other fields but the math itself is just math
sounds interesting i might research it myself a bit but i think im supposed to take probability and statistics as well which ive heard is easy
which im not so sure about
i just wanted to know in case i had to take calc 3 later, thank you for the info
There is also a free textbook I used as supplement:
https://openstax.org/books/calculus-volume-3/pages/1-intro
Use it wisely
thank you very much
np
how is the link supposed to come up? its just an empty page for me
Try this one: https://openstax.org/details/books/calculus-volume-3
that worked, thanks
👍
how do you guys remember important information for exams? i struggle retaining information and when it comes to tests i dont do super great, regardless if it's math related or not
If something doesn't make sense to me intuitively, I prove it myself or practice using the method. For example, the formula to solve y'+py=q is another thing to remember but if you know the trick to start solving it without the formula, then the rest comes naturally.
Basically, if I ever forget, I can reconstruct the answer.
pain
i don’t understand, if you stop doing other work because you want to study math, why do you hate it
Because it's distracting me 😭 I don't actually hate it, I just wish I could forget about it for a bit so I could focus
lmao did that yesterday
the worst is that it was 2000 word essay for another math class, but less interesting...
wtf math class is makign you write essays
makes sense, i guess i just tend to forget very important information, or when there are multiple variables (like in statistics, seeing different standard deviations, x's, and inferences) if I forget one of them, then it gets really difficult for me to continue to solve the problem
multiple choice, especially when i am timed, is super difficult for me, and i just hate taking tests in general, however on questions that expect detail in response, i do far better at those for some reason??
unironically let the chatbots write the cliched essays
I got 3.8
don’t forget F is 0
Out of 10
everything is a particle but particles aren’t really things also a tensor is something that transforms like a tensor
the lack of mathematical rigor in my undergrad particle physics/quantum class is what made me want to study math…

Okay
Well trauma when used, generally refers to mental trauma
Although there is physical trauma
trauma always refers to mental trauma?
oh
?
oka
right how much time will you take then?
is there any complex integral calculator online?
Wait i have 10 mins
June8
it is okay when you are free type its text, i will ask from there
If a person suffers injury, that is referred to as trauma
oh
however, like if someone suffers from an event
Which is emotionally damaging
Then trauma is an emotional response
is injury considered to be the trauma too
oh
how about this one
Sorry, June8, wish I could help, don't know if Wolfram Alpha solves it or not
Well that is emotional or mental trauma
More like due to the events
It might include onset of depression
Flashbacks
And emotional downfall yk
For example, let us say
Someone, God forbid, gets into an accident
Lets say road accident
will flashbacks ever heal
Apart from physical trauma
Rehab might help, but not always
Since flashbacks are a thing that require you to move on and not think back again, which is hard...
For example, if the person in question sees another accident, he gets reminded of his own experience
That's how a flashback is triggered
i had no idea there were lots of traumas
I mean that's all of it.
The general notion about trauma is
mental trauma
Disturbed state of mind
i think this is so true
But medically, its just not only that
It is, tiny
Now trauma isn't necessarily from events or one-time occurences
It can be due to repeat events such as abuse or violence
Soldiers who've served in wars might suffer from some trauma
And let's not forget PTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
A disorder related to happening of a traumatic event
it seems like flashbacks are triggered by trauma itself
It's more like, the symptoms which someone suffers from after a traumatic event
Flashbacks can have triggers, obv.
Not necessarily by trauma
For example, if it was a car accident
i mean this is a complex thing to understand
Let us say a blue Mercedes was involved
so maybe the person in question
Is walking some day
And sees a blue Mercedes approach
That can become a flashback trigger.
that makes sense
Well, for you and me, what we need to know for short, isn't too complicated
it has been a while since i have been thinking about trauma and how it is being triggered and everything related to it
Okay that makes me have a question...
You have a math exam
flashbacks
Which I dont believe
is in the next week
Because every week its the next week
And you're the one who said you don't do anything other than maths
...
So Ig you get the question
Also, I go dinner now
alright
rigorous treatment of calculus is called real analysis then what about rigorous treatment of multivariable calculus and functions ? whats it called ?
@neat lintel
real analysis
measure theory doesn't care for number of variables
so like
oh
you might be confusing the baby level of analysis with grad-level real analysis (Folland)
if it were up to me only Folland-level stuff deserves to be called real analysis. It starts with measure theory
if i defined integral rigorously is it obvious that double and triple integrals and polar follow through
have you learned measure theory
no i have learnt sequence and series
What would you call the baby level stuff?
just analysis
Fake analysis
which then splits into real and complex analysis
but my question was that
does double and triple integral have separate rigorous treatment ?
measure theory handles any number of variables so don't worry about that. wait until you get to Folland level
pathway is to read Tao's Analysis I & II then Folland's Real Analysis
I was preparing for masters entrance exam in maths.the syllabus include real analysis,I know calculus1,little bit of set theory and logic,I want to self study ,recommend book or YouTube playlist
there is this 250page book called understanding analysis stephen abott i am reading is it what u called baby level ?
there are plenty of analysis books yeah
does it also handle partial derivatives and stokes greens and continuity and differentiability on n number of dimensions ?
all that cal 3 crap that i was taught intuitively and geometrically only
there are still many geometric proofs, especially in early real analysis
that's not early, that's like half way through the course
it handles all that except stokes' theorem
many people indeed try to cram stokes' theorem into analysis like baby Rudin but the treatment is usually awful because differential forms etc. properly belong in differential geometry, after you have learned multilinear algebra
not just area intuition
damm what is multilinear algebra
is it a subject ?
just a small extension of linear algebra
look up the nested intervals theorem or other limit or sequence related theorems, a lot of them are really just staring at what's given and concluding that the claim holds true
chatgpt is a horrible math advisor
I was preparing for masters entrance exam in maths.the syllabus include real analysis,I know calculus1,little bit of set theory and logic,I want to self study ,recommend book or YouTube playlist
yes are you over with dinner
oh no the message was there too up above and conversations have been active
the trauma has been a huge problem @split pawn for me too and i am trying to cope with those it is surely incredibly hard
it does not matter what trauma it is maybe it takes ages to heal or maybe it would never heal or maybe it will
..
You alright?
i kinda get stressed too much at times
I mean well
Stress is not trauma
Buts stress can be due to trauma
So uh that makes me ask
Ya alright?
Yeah I sure am
i mean it is too much to handle at times, i cant explain in words wish i could
Well, that is stress.
And not trauma
Unless yeah
There is something else to it
I can somehow understand you
and then this trauma thing that came in my mind this was so intense to handle too
seek professional therapy
If you think your stress is not manageable, talk to your parents and get yourself a consultation with a child psychiatrist who can recommend measures including therapy
maybe its like that
But also know that, as in, you, are a very important factor in how things go for yourself.
therapy would help for sometime then it wont help too
Why do you think so
if its trauma they are prolly right
I mean instead of suffering from stress every day you can just go and talk to a child specialist
And in your case
Be open about it to your parents
I think there's research done about how effective therapy is in PTSD and likely situations
i might do that too
i think PTSD was something that i had
i dont know if it has got healed up til now i still had it i think
there is not just PTSD there is so much to it
Dr Google has a lot of information, tiny, but it didn't have any medical degree from any recognizable institute?
exactly
i have read lots of articles and some of the things showed to be helpful on the internet
sometimes it isnt like that
it is also true too
yep
Although I'm not gonna say what is, and what is not, since I am not the one you should be asking that.
But
Dr Google isn't the place you diagnose yourself
So, let me show you an example.
Very layman example.
google is an internet
I'll google something rq wait
okay
I googled sore throat
Now see what list of possible ailments it is related to
Although these are not all.
- Common cold
- Strep throat
- Tonsilitis
- Postnasal drip
- Upper respiratory infection
Now maybe some cool name
oh
Like Tonsilitis fascinates you
And you read about it
And then whatever the symptoms are, your mind starts aligning
Oh yes, I have pain in the throat whilst swallowing
Oh yes I do have sore throat
Oh yeah I do feel some swelling
Oh yeah I do have bad taste
And then, result is: You self diagnose
and this can be pretty harmful
this everything making a lot of sense
prolly best to go to dm. idk if a public discussion is appropriate
That's what doctors study five years or how many years for
To not make such errors.
They learn from treating local population
Seeing what manifests how in patients
What is the trend of diseases
How can a symptom be more linked to a certain disease than the other
they do lots of study and research
And Google doesnt care about it
In your country, tiny, some places are colder than others.
So, that regional variation can induce different patterns
Of maybe, flu related to seasonal changes
So, Mr Google is not gonna help you
It's gonna say
Country X has this common disease
Although it might not be common in your region
yes
So I hope you get my point
My point isn't to stop reading or gaining information
My point is, don't make the internet your doctor, go to a real doctor, and get yourself a full health check-up
At first I thought you're just the math 24/7 person
So you might be stressed out
And since you asked about trauma now
Anyway
It must be night there
it is
Yep
Someone put my internet signal on a 555 oscillator
(Im just getting into electronics so dont bang me)
what do you ugys think of the math gre
I'm not from the US but yeah maybe someone could help
i heard that it's about the same as the math sat
it's for grad school admission
i know
but difficulty-wise i've heard it isn't that hard
hmm, yeah
also the math section of the gre does not reflect anything remotely close to a grad-level math class
so like
the current system established from the greek times
of society and law
wont continue on mars
i hope so
'current system of society' I'm bad at humanities though
like
greek people made a lot of progress in ethics
and romans in military systems
ig there's a great book named "Sapiens : a brief history of mankind" which encapsulates all the historic development of human societies
oh i love books
especially those that make me forget that i have a semester final next month
hmm , you can check out "CODE" by charles petzold as well.
Will keep you busy for a while
What’s poppin

man. 13 year olds watching to andrew tate is crazy. do parents not monitor what their child does on the internet
yeah, 13 year olds should be watching disney movies instead of andrew tate
no kidding. people are being raised by the internet. shit is rotten
