For those that have bought an international edition of Hoffman and Kunze, what was your experience with regard to printing quality and how well the book holds together?
Hey! My teacher worked the solution in class. It turns out that the complex numbers could have simplified and we got the same answer as you @hollow topaz
bloƫ is moƫ
No problem!
Wow I put that into a calculator
and it said the answer is "make better jokes" that's crazy
so advanced these days
wowee
9,9999999999999999.... = 10
š„“
ā-1 = ā
|N|<|R| <=> ā < ā
š„“ x 2
anyone can explain that?
Don't advertise here.
first and third are correct
for the first, assume 9.999....... = x
10x = 99.999........
Mhm
Damn
so 9.999.... = 10
nice
what rational and irrational numbers?
You seriously couldnāt just google that?
Anyone know of a sticky note type app that has latex support?
Would be nice to have sticky notes to save formulas / short latex snippets etc
can one use coterminal angles to put the domain of arccos within [0, pi]? or will that not work
what is a sticky note type app?
simple example would be sticky notes for windows
A rational number is one that is the ratio (a/b) of two whole numbers. Examples are 3 = 3/1, 0.5 = 1/2, and -15.5 = -31/2. An irrational number is a number that is not rational.
like for example 1/0 ?
Har har, so helpful
I'm trying to follow the line of reasoning over here
You've already been told that this is against the rules yesterday

@light needle works now, like the same file I didn't even redownload it
cue the missing "fi" ligature
Any calculus PDF ??
sus
write the efe on it
šOur prof in techincal cs told us you can bring the entire script. Won't be helpful if you didn't understand the content.
I can write the entire calculus 1 course on it
But yeah you are right
you have to understand the concepts
I've had open book exams
the exams are designed so that if you don't study, no book will help you
What are you trying to do?
I was asked by my HS teacher to learn this proof
but is it really important to prove this property of limits?
It can give you a deeper insight into how math works. But I'm surprised you're proving that in hs
Don't you want to know why?
I know already the epsilon-delta definition, but I'm still not getting many steps of that
It's awkward at first
But once you do a epsilon delta proof a thousand times it gets better
Is there a step you need explained?
I'm not understanding why in the first step he puts it as minor than epsilon/2
you could use regular epsilon
since epsilon is arbitrary you can define a new epsilon $\epsilon = \frac{\varepsilon}{2}$
Transparent_Elemental
and that'll still work
lmao epsilon is cursed
The point is that epsilon/2 + epsilon /2 = epsilon, which is more elegant than bounding it by 2 epsilon.
yeah, if you bound it by 2 epsilon you can define new epsilon to account for that multiplier
Ok then I understand some better now
Although those formal definition and proofs exercises are so boring
Is this stuff used later on? Or it's just formal exercises to define the limit, then I can forget about them
It depends what you go on to do
it's used in a whole lot of proofs of important theorems
Next year I join Engineering University probably.
You can take math for granted as an engineer most of the time I think
multiple choice definition memorization seems like the worst way to "learn" "proofs"
wtf
well it helped me memorize it. I do remember it now.
there's also the exercises where it asks to verify a limit using the def.
I personally probably use techniques from epsilon delta proofs more for my work than most other topics in mathematics
It's completely trivial.
But if you can't even prove it, you can't hope to handle any theorems or results built on calculus
Once you get a good mental picture (like 1 year into analysis), you can start to skip these boring routines. Indeed higher math books leave exercises to the readers so that they can save space and focus on just key points.
But as my advisor says, someone may call or ask you to explain the boring routines, and you better be able to explain them.
That moment when you are forced to learn math in french as an English speaker
L quebec moment
to avoid cluttering the available sections
otherwise the available section would be a list of 50 unused help channels and bloat the server
Ah, okay. I thought I had done something wrong and gotten locked out of those channels lol
nope, intentional that youre not able to type there
use an available channel instead
we could just delete the channels, but some people like to go back and search/reread past help
so we prefer to keep them up
Makes sense. Thanks for the info.
(also in the future, you can DM modmail for server-related questions)
(it's fine here too, though)
Ah, good to know.
Can I ask some information about limits?
Yes
My book does this thing
In which occasions it's necessary to specify if the result of a limit is l+ or l-
For example
the lim of x->+inf of 1/x² should be 0+
Although there's some odd cases where it's neither of the two, but the limit still exists
like this. It's neither 0+ or 0- , it's just 0
So if a function is approaching a limit but decreasing or increasing?
Atleast intuitively thats how it seems
But this isnāt necessarily true so nevermind
f(x) being in that range means that it can only approach from the top half
does anyone use mathematica regularly? thinking of buying a student desktop license to do all the chunky integrals i cant figure out and need for other things
i guarantee you it is not worth the cost
your school might offer it for free, though.
Mathematica is pretty handy if you get it free
Try logging in with your school credentials maybe your school purchases licenses
That's how I got it
or check your school's software portal, if one exists
honestly worth checking that anyway
often comes with cool goodies that last after your education is up
like my school offered a free upgrade from windows 10 home to education edition
which is the same thing but with a few more features (most notably hyper-v)
no reason not to get it
do oyu guys think i have potential?
i was a bad student average but im taking prep chemistry
and im actually enjoying but its hard but i def enjoy it
i have the urge to go to chem class
what is happening to me i thought i hated school?
anyone explain whos smart?
Dude sounds like you just like the subject
Not smart personally but i had similar thoughts with chem
i believe in you!
chemistry is fun i just have too much else to learn
Barry Gibbs
jk that's the beegees
so this is just the pi vs tau debate
Multiple choice epsilon delta lmao
Now Iāve seen it all

whats the point of multiple choice epsilon delta
theres no point in showing epsilon delta if you're not taught how to write the proof
whats the point of multiple choice

easier to grade
multiple choice is for humanities
Daily "humanities bad" time
Yeah actually I was having a lot more fun when I took humanities classes
Now I am suffering through a boring pdes class
maths philo moment
idk what would you say your stance on maths philo is to begin with
Personally, mine is an abstract take, that it is about the overall structure of the study vs any particular application of it.
For anyone curious, this is a continuation of a discussion happening in the Physics discord server, where I asked:
I'm curious what you all think about calling mathematics "patronology," from the Greek word for pattern, "ĻαĻĻĻν." It is essentially "the study of patterns," as a rough/direct translation.
I feel like a lot of students in mathematics don't understand the "big picture" of what mathematics is about, since the name itself doesn't carry much meaning to someone studying the subject. Patronology carries a bit more information and etymology of what is actually being pursued: understanding of the patterns governing a topic/study.
We have had a very healthy conversation there, and I'm curious what viewpoints the good people of this server might offer. I asked a very broad question, and so naturally I expect a very broad set of viewpoints and perspectives.
changing the name of something doesnt change what it is
Correct, it's more of a clarification as to what is being studied and pursued.
well ppl in chill are lazy
idk if you will get a lot of good responses here
id also gamble you will get less imaginative or thoughtful responses from math people in general

Then I will wait for some good feedback (:
i think this falls into an analogous situation with "what should we call the philippines"
it doesnt represent anything abt what the philippines are but ppl stuck with it bc its what everyone uses
I disagree with calling mathematics the study of patterns
For that to be true youād have to stretch the meaning of pattern to a point where it barely carries information
Sure patterns have their place but I wouldnāt call all of mathematics the study of them
Plus I donāt think changing the name would achieve what youāre saying anyway
Im also wondering why do you think a lot of students donāt understand the ābig pictureā of mathematics and how you would describe said picture
A lot of people think maths is mostly just like
calculations
GUYS I GOT A 87%% FOR MATHA ššššš¤·āāļøš¤£šš¤£šš
I've had people basically just think that it's like adding together larger and larger numbers
But I donāt think mathematics students think that
Which is what Aedra said
Students outside of mathematics do have no idea what maths is about I agree
congratulations š„³
i mean even like early maths majors sometimes do
Thx sists
nah are you kidding?
you get into proofs stuff in real analysis or abstract algebra first in many schools
that's pretty far into it
But at the heart of all of it, do we not study patterns? I cannot think of any example where some pattern isn't being studied and expanded upon.
Really?
I thought calc 1 was high school
(Im not very familiar with the American system)
Real analysis 1, Lin alg and introductory proofs are the first courses you take here
Expand on what a pattern is for you
I think eventually weād run into the issue i described
Mathematics is too broad of a subject to be described like that in my opinion
not in US
it is in some schools
very big country
but regardless yeah analysis is pretty late in UG usually
certainly after 2nd semester for most students
But even if you start with calc 1
Youāll probably notice that maths isnāt adding big numbers
I suppose?
But calc does give a wrong idea of what maths is lol
well idk if most people both go to college and take calc 1
but i also get this impression
'oh youre a math grad student? what is 1354*9841'
as if i could answer that. I said -1 mod 3 was 1 in a test last year
In general, I think of a pattern as some structure with an identifiable set of parameters which are themselves applicable to the structure in question.
And those parameters may/may not be operations
Or operators*
But this comes from non maths majors
Iāll answer in a bit Aedra, in a lecture rn
Bruh
?
Most people? Lol
Isn't that enough to get into anal?
Usually no

First two semesters will typically be finishing up the calc track and doing linear algebra
I also had discrete and an intro to proofs course before analysis
Not that I took analysis in my third year, since I didn't have a third year, but it seems reasonable
just become a programmer
presumably thats the point, its meant to communicate how trig ratios work.
i'd wager this is meant to be done without a calculator?
lol
then you missed the point
can you guys do me a favor? need some SEO
google "characteristic classes texromancers" and click on the book
ty
Sure lmao
This is really well done!
One thing I noticed though is that in the blank page between chapters, thereās still a header and a footer, which looks sort of odd (though this could just be me). Was this intentional?
oh yeah it is a bit sus, maybe i should find a solution to that lol
Also another small thing, on page 318 (the last page, this is why I noticed it lol) the f(z,v) overlaps with the picture a bit.
Also on that same page the footer doesnāt have a rule above it (which is a tiny issue, itās just a little different than the style of the rest of the book)
wut

you did this to yourself
For once I agree with quantum
Oh silly me
Who woulda known anal could've been interested the wrong way

Mm?

Lmfao slurp, so bold

Rycie!
Ryc I fucking hate L^p spaces
Also when would they be āusefulā other than when studying L^p spaces?
Bagel!
Ew, for lunch? Don't make me laugh
I had pizza yesterday
Hmm
Sad!
Pasta?
Well, L^2, L^1, and L^infinity are all really important
LASAGNA
The others come up less often but they still come up
Why L^2?
For example, when you're studying nonlinear PDEs, you run into many situations where your PDE either represents the process of minimizing the L^p norm of a function satisfying some constraints (for a particular p) or where your PDE conserves some L^p norm as time moves
The L^2 norm comes from an inner product, and inner products are very important
Ohhh yeah
Keep in mind that the L^2 norm is just the integral form of the pythagorean theorem in R^n
(the euclidean distance formula)
Right right
Anyway?
L^2 is the space where you can study "angles" between functions, and more accurately, projections of one function onto others
Mmm right this be throwing me back to LA
And hence it's the space where you can do stuff like fourier analysis, regression, and a lot of other stuff
No lasagna is kinda bad
Oh guess what
I had a fully vegan egg sandwich this morning
Are you fucking insane you sicko
Damnn I had one once, it was okay
It was only 2.50 which is so cheap for an egg sandwich here
And it was indistinguishable from a normal egg sandwich
I'll go back there a lot
I mean its good but come on
Lettuce is fine but on an egg sandwich?
Baked ziti
It was an omelet
Oh
Baby spinach i get, arugula i get
But whatever
But lettuce lettuce?

Texture matters, lasagna is a bunch of flat layers
Omelet sandwiches are really fucking popular here
And theyāre all the same
So lettuce, tomato, cucumber, omelet, and sometimes cream cheese
Itās amazing!!!
Have you ever seen why they build buildings out of triangles instead of squares
Because itās stronger?
Lasagna is a meal integrity nightmare
So is lasagna!!!
Lasagna is a structure
Like itās meant to be fluid in the sense that solids are supposed to be

What
At least recommend I get squash ravioli
No
At least recommend I get pesto gnocchi
Sweet potato and squash ravioli are so similar
yes the layers of the lasagna shear because we don't adhere them together
Sure
Its butternut squash
you eat the pasta
Lasagna is meant to do what it does!!!!
Yeah for fucks sake ryc you big pussy
Why would I make my life more inconvenient with big ass squares and meat sauce and ricotta getting everywhere, making the plate look like a 5 year old smashed his face into it
If I wanted to just eat pasta
No
but if I'm in an Italian mood it's Chicken Parmigiana
Meat sauce??? Kofer
Oh no my food doesn't look good, literally inedible
Lasagna is fucking amazing
It's the inferior and highly overrated form of pasta consumption
NO
It is overrated but it's not like it's bad
Nah
Itās literally at the top of the hierarchy
It's p good
It's totally edible it's just unpleasant
Youāre insane
That's my stance boytjie
Lasagna is very pleasant
That is my exact stance
Ryc my respect for you just dropped so much
The lasagna itself is pleasant but the thought that I could have made a better pasta choice always lurks in my mind
I don't try to micromanage your respect for me anymore
It's too volatile
what pasta would you prefer
Tagliatelle
Or gnocchi
Or even fettuccine!
Or rotelle
There are many worse pastas than lasagna to be clear
like what
There is no better pasta than lasagna
Made up names
it isn't as substantial as lasagna
lasagna feels like a meal
Felafel?
Farfalle = bowties
Ew
farfalle = butterflies
Stuffed shells
The fuck is your ISSUE with gnocchi?
No 7 year old knows what tagliatelle is
So gnocchi looks like maggots
Which grosses me out
And the sauce my mother makes is good, but paired with the gnocchi somehow makes the maggot thoughts worse, so I just hate it now
Also the gnocchi we get isnāt high quality
Oh
Thats kinda gross
I never buy it I just get it at restaurants
I didnt think of the maggots thing
This is now the second food you have cursed me to think about maggots every time i eat
I just have an issue with maggots/slimy bugs
Reeseās peanut butter cups is the other?
Gnocchi!
Oh
Yeah
Peanut butter cups is the other
So much food in nyc and I don't want any of it
Spoiled
Wanna hear the story behind this?
Uhhh
Not particularly
I dont need to have a story to have an issue with maggots
They're just gross
It is a gross story because it involves maggots
Basically I was cleaning up in the dark (at camp), I picked up a sock and it was slimy, and I got a glimpse of something white so I threw it away and was too disgusted to keep cleaning. At the time I assumed they were maggots but Iām not so sure anymore
I get nauseous really easily, thinking about nausea makes me nauseous
I did then, it was like 6 years ago
Now you get it?
how old were you
Yeah true
I mean yeah that's a memorable gross out moment regardless
oof
More like 4-5
my condolences
š
What if i just go to popeyes
Ew
I've never had popeyes but everyone tells me it's great
good to know
ello :D
Good'ay mate
Please it sucks
itās fine
not my favorite but itās good
raising canes is probably my favorite chicken place that iāve gone to though
but that 30 piece chicken nugget meal at chick fil aā¦
Canes...
Well
I fucking hate TeX
At popeyes instead of giving me the thing I wanted they gave me no sides and too much chicken
Dude werenāt you talking about food hours ago
And it was good but now my tummy hurts
Did you just get food?
This was hours ago!
Oh
But my tummy hurts now
It turns out in certain situations if you do \let\X⦠you can make \X a space character
That is so silly
Not sure why
Why would you do that
And itās pissing me off
DUDE
But just dont do it
I need to tho

Itās so you can do \X + \Y for example
Instead of \X +\Y
But when I do, it detects that fucking space between the + and \Y
,tex \def\X#1{\futurelet\A\Y}
\def\Y{\meaning\A}
\X + h
Look at this shit
Wow
Now I need to go cry to plante but heās asleep š
Knuth is a hack
Hahaha
FUCK
HACK
This is how it all comes crashing down
Ohhhh hahaha
I have been waiting for this moment
And now I am going to savor it
I believe in you!!!
Bullshit

Say you want to iterate over the tokens after \X, you use \futurelet and get the blank space. Now you need to get rid of it, how do you do that? You can use \gobble (\def\gobble#1{}), but hereās the issue: itās a FUCKING SPACE. The \gobble will gobble the fucking h, not the space (since tokenization for macros ignores spaces)! And futureletting again gets the fucking space again
Mhm
So how the fuck do you do it?
Theres no space gobbler?
No because usually you wouldnāt have this issue
I mean like
No simple one probably
Can you make a space gobbler
Because this is probably not a common issue
No idea how
Now I could just reengineer my code
And not rely on futurelet
Maybe you could use futurelets somehow, since you know they can find spaces
They detect them, but they donāt gobble them
Oh I have an idea
Hell yeah
So instead of gobbling after the space, use an identity macro (\def\identity#1{#1}) since itāll ignore the space
This is my issue with TeX, I think something will take half an hour tops and it ends up taking 2 hours
Oh heya Walter how goes
Oh? Whatās up?
Sure I bet you were praying for me to fail so you could make fun of me

nothing in particular, it's just been a busy semester
but how have you been holding up
Iām fine, my semester hasnāt started yet tho, it starts on the 23rd
Hahaha
Oh ryc I added functors
Wtf
Like the c++ type ones
ew slurp is a category theorist
What is a c++ functor
Yeah a c++ functor so basically
It overrides the () operator
So if you have an object obj of class Obj which overrides () you can do obj(ā¦)
And this is called a functor
Itās like overriding []
Whats ()
But better because you can let it have multiple inputs
Parentheses
So like if the class Obj overrides the parentheses operator, so if obj is an instance of Obj, you can do something like obj(ā¦)
this might be a late reply but this sounds like a net gain
Thats why i was happy about it
For example
class Obj {
public:
void operator()(int x) { std::cout << x << std::endl; }
};
Obj obj;
obj(10); // prints 10
Until about an hour after i ate all the chicken
Anyway now TeX++ has the ability to do this
So now I can make all methods functors whichll help me do some stuff that Iām blanking on now
Oh yeah like better expansion
"functors"

Donāt feel obligated to ofc, Iām gonna force DarQ to watch anyway
Hmm say like ~30 min? Does that work for you as well @bright hill?
Currently in lecture

Can we please have another advanced vc that's not math specific?
Ill be there in a min
Grass has joined the chat
can anyone tell me briefly on the steps you follow while studying mathematics? just what are your techniques? there are many guides on the internet but I simply want to hear one from an average student
- read book/attend lecture
- do practice problems
- do practice problems
- do practice problems
that's pretty simple, i'm definitely overthinking it, one more then before i'm assured, do you use spaced repetition for practice problems? that sounds stupid but trust me answering will help a lot
- Read book
- Try problems
- Watch video (if still confused)
- Try problems
- Repeat steps 1-3 (with different books/videos) until I understand.
- Revist later once partially forgotten and repeat steps 1-5 (usually leaving with a deeper level of understanding)

do you guys think math tutors are useful?
do you use spaced repetition for practice problems?
no
maybe it helps but i think those pedagogy/study motivation/whatever things are all dumb (and lowkey ableist but thats besides the point)
people spend too much time worrying about how they study rather than just opening a book and working
and you do need to work, to be clear
passive reading is not learning
if you get caught up somewhere, go to office hours
struck a chord, understood
Spaced repetition would be useful if you wanted to memorise the answers. However typically we want to learn how to make answers, not regurgitate ones from years ago.
Yes
I think it's interesting how ryc's name goes through so many changes, but I can always immediately tell that it's Ryc
because he never changes his pfp
@deep mango you would be based if you changed it back to your old bird pfp
The old pfp was so commercial
I underwent a rebranding and self-actualized

nope, I use the old style where it's just text
I have to click on your name to see your pfp

I still miss skype, leave me alone

in that case I'm flattered
I hate Skype
I used skype for a messaging app for a couple years before I moved to discord
I don't really miss it
