elfin oracle
#

ok ok just making sure

velvet dagger
#

Hello1 to actually answer you

#

Depends on how much it does and how many psets

leaden torrent
#

4 problems seems a bit below average for a pset but not singificantly

#

most of mine were 5-6

#

if its a weekly pset then 4 problems makes sense

velvet dagger
#

If it's 15 psets x 4 problems/pset, and it's a class on homology and cohomology (π_1/covering is assumed background)

#

Then that's not bad

leaden torrent
#

hell id consider that a lot even

velvet dagger
#

Also depends on which problems they're giving

leaden torrent
#

not from the student's pov

#

but from the grader's

#

i would not be able to get my department to approve me grading 60 homology/cohomology problems a student

#

since they need to pay me for that

velvet dagger
#

Ah in my undergrad they paid graders per student a fixed rate from the beginning

leaden torrent
#

well to be more precise

velvet dagger
#

And I guess if you felt the amount you were being told to grade was unreasonable

tepid stag
#

38 lecture, 6 psets, 5 problems per pset

leaden torrent
#

we get a fixed rate but we have a certain amount of hours each week

#

and if we go over that legally we have to count it as overtime

#

and they never give overtime

#

sooo

velvet dagger
#

Then... I mean depends I guess on you play it

leaden torrent
#

and the department was actually strict about making sure people dont take unpaid overtime since they got bopped in the past for it

#

got fined for it even

#

so yeah, i only had a limited amount of hours a week to spend on grading

velvet dagger
#

One of my friends from an analysis class we took together is now grading that analysis class

leaden torrent
#

and they would not approve 60 problems per student per semester except in really small classes

#

or in classes like calc/lin alg/diff eqs where checking the solutions takes 10 seconds

velvet dagger
#

He got an email from the professor being like yo ask the department for a second grader

#

And originally he's thinking well I wanna grade it myself

#

This is gonna make him change his mind lmfao

leaden torrent
#

holy shit lmfoa

#

yeah

#

i would not want to grade that shit

#

jesus fuck

tepid stag
velvet dagger
#

37 students right now

#

And this is a 1 week pset

leaden torrent
#

oh that pset seems reasonably lengthed if its meant to be about 1/6th of the course

#

the questions are substantial enough

#

if anything theyre probably a bit harder than i'd expect

tepid stag
#

okok

leaden torrent
#

but this is MIT

tepid stag
velvet dagger
#

I'd say fine

#

Though mismatched

#

You sent a pset from 906

#

The lecture from 905

leaden torrent
#

yeah i was confused lmao

velvet dagger
#

(I figured because the pset problems had nothing to do with the lecture lol)

leaden torrent
#

i noticed that too and was like "wtf"

velvet dagger
#

Anyway MIT is probably fine on general principle

#

Maybe depending on your personal preferences you can check who's teaching the class and see if you get an idea of that person's reputation

#

Maybe you want the perspective of a geometric group theorist or an algebraic topologist or etc etc on the material

@reef carbon, I wanted to ask how do you remember all the maths stuff in such depth. I studied each one of my maths chapters(Calculus,PnC,Sequences,Matrices, Parabola, etc.) in detail in school, but I can't seem to recall much of anything without looking it up. I am in college now, but am not pursuing a maths degree so that doesn't help

I am surprised at the speed that I forgot things, sicne it was only a few years ago that I studied them

reef carbon

I want to practice solving problems similar to this

Find how many natural solutions that satisfy constraints x, y, z given by equations and inequalities

Like

Find all the combinations of numbers from 0 to 2000 that are even, have sums = c, and are = or < f(x,y,z)

I don't have much time so I can't really dive into it too much. Is there a name for these types of problems or a method so that I can more reliably solve them?

Do you guys think that in courses like real analysis, things get easier once you got through the beginning of the course? Like once you got the hang of proofs and stuffs?

#

Or is it just downhill from here

fast ivy
#

Well, you definitely can get better at real analysis after spending some time with it, doing more provlems, rereading proofs and getting a better intuition of the definitions and results.

The thing is that the time you have to spend in order to get better acquainted with this subject (or with any other for that matter) varies a lot from person to person. For instance, this means that you may not get totally comfortable with the material being covered in a real analysis course during the period you are spending taking a course on it at your university. But maybe, a few months or even years later after you have taken the class you may stumble upon some concept covered in that class and finally feel like you have a better intuition for it.

river moon
#

yes because initially you're being told how you can take such simple things as numbers and sets and make them infinitely more complicated than it would be necessary for the rest of the course

fast ivy
#

I don't know if most intro to real analysis courses focus a lot of time on the construction of the real numbers, the peano axioms, elementary set theory and such.

#

Maybe in the first 1 or 2 weeks of the course.

Yes, of course. No one is saying that you don't need training. Like what you have said is trivial, and everyone knows it

I can say that cats are better predators than dogs (just a dumb example). And you could trivially object that if a cat is not nurtured by her mother, it won't be able to hunt. But everyone knows that. What is said when we say that an individual may have been born with certain advantages (genetically speaking), is that ceteris paribus those advantages will become evident.

wispy plover

I think I agree, yes. But on the other side, meaning that some features are (to some extent at least) based on genetics, may be consolating. For example, think about homosexuality. Many believed it was due to some deviated nurturing, and so parents may have felt responsible, etc.

Jimmy Neutron was an entertaining movie

The Shadow Realm is alleged to be a place of suffering where people could be sent to. It was designed by 4Kids Entertainment for the dubbed version of the Yu-Gi-Oh! second series anime. If a death or serious injury would occur in the Japanese version, the dub would censor it by having the victim be sent to the Shadow Realm instead; hence, the Shadow Realm is regarded as a euphemism for death and other disastrous events used for the dub.

I'm looking for a little advice on studying.

I have to get through 5 weeks of math coursework in two weeks. I have been trying to complete each section 100% before I move on but I feel like that may be causing me to lag behind. I want to learn, but I also want to pass my class and not have to take it again (and pay again)... should I just push through the content as fast as possible even if I don't understand it 100%?

barren anchor
#

I don't recommend "pushing through" in a math, because later things tend to build on earlier things

#

so prioritize by resource-friendliness, and start at the earlier topics

#

it's pretty essential that you work problems yourself. really, a worked set of example problems is worth it's weight in gold, so find those.

#

if you do know a topic exists in a vacuum, i.e. skipping it won't just slow you down in later content, then it's fine to do that if you also know it won't be weighted highly on the test, but it's pretty hard to know that without already knowing the course.

oh lol well you'll be fine then
