#

I do think a lot of students are expected to think about rref as an unmotivated algorithm

#

which is ofc bad

eager reef
#

The new professor at my uni is gonna hold an alg top course AWOOKEN

#

Im hyped

#

We didn’t have anyone who offered that before

bright hill
#

I think he reduced a bunch of matrices for 40 minutes and expected us to infer that's he's not just doing it randomly

#

there actually rules that exist which he's following

wild lantern
#

Does his book cover it?

deep mango
#

I dont remember this at all

#

I remember learning the the terminology and the heuristic for how to reduce

modest rune
#

You didnt learn the algorithm ryc?

#

Theres like

#

a pretty functional way to do it without thinking at all

deep mango
#

I do remember learning the algorithm

#

I dont remember what darq is saying

#

And I used this course

modest rune
#

oh

#

i see

wild lantern
#

It might make sense if the ocw vids expect people to read the book in a certain order thonk

deep mango
#

But ofc it was never listed as like

#

A flowchart of rules

bright hill
#

the rules insure that rref is unique

#

which has theoretical importance

deep mango
#

Rref is unique either way

#

If you know what "rref" means

#

Or

#

I guess you can reorder the rows or something dumb like that

modest rune
#

unique up to contractible space of choices

bright hill
#

😵‍💫

#

what does that mean?

modest rune
#

nothing meaningful

bright hill
#

lel

bright hill
#

what I was saying is that these (axioms/rules/w/e) were never explicitly mentioned in his lectures

deep mango
#

Those arent rules for how to construct rreff sully

#

That's the definition

#

I would be surprised if he doesn't define RREF

modest rune
#

the Zermelo-Frankel rules

deep mango
#

I like

#

How did I learn this if I didnt learn it from strangs lectures

wild lantern
#

Are his videos meant to be a standalone resource?

deep mango
#

Thats how I used them

#

Along with the recitations and the psets/exams

wild lantern
#

Like, in a normal class it's not uncommon to have that kind of stuff covered in required readings in the syllabus.

deep mango
#

(and then I retook lin alg in uni, a more theory based version)

#

So maybe im remembering that

burnt dune
#

sheldon axler

#

has linear algebra on youtube

#

following his textbook

velvet dagger
#

The way I learned LA kinda dodged rref somehow

deep mango
#

They explicitly do not cover a good portion of the material

#

I like those the best though

burnt dune
#

you do not want to read a text?

velvet dagger
#

When my analysis class had us do Hoffman-Kunze we did some rref

deep mango
#

I barely ever want to read a text if I can help it

burnt dune
#

okay let me send u something

velvet dagger
#

But my first "class" on LA basically only cared about row reduction to prove that row = column rank

#

And the idea was just, row operations don't change column rank and vice versa, then you can just reduce to, basically "Smith normal form"

burnt dune
#

i started learning about math probably like 4 years ago started with prof leonard precalc. and from that time he promised us a linear algebra playlist

#

there is still no linear algebra playlist

#

so sad

velvet dagger
#

Treason

burnt dune
#

awy b2a

#

seriously its so asd

#

sad

#

i hope u know about him

#

prof leonard is literally daddy

velvet dagger
#

I don't

burnt dune
#

so sad

velvet dagger
#

Honestly I don't have patience for learning through videos anyway

burnt dune
#

me neither hahaha

#

but

#

i have never been to an actual math lecture uptill like 1 and ahlf year ago

#

a prof told me i should come and attend his algebraic number theory class

#

dude lectures are so much easierrr

#

like they actually do examples of each theorem

#

before proving stuff

#

its so much easier than just reading a textbook alone

Very poetic

bright hill

I feel the opposite frankly

#

at least the linear algebra part

hubbards approach to LA is very concrete

which made it a lot easier to digest the abstract perspective when I switched to artin

#

I'm talking about him barely even touching abstract vectors spaces (and doing a mediocre job tbh)

deep mango
deep mango
#

More than anything the important skills are patience with yourself, being willing to spend a lot of time and energy learning, and also being open to collaborating with people / learning from people / teaching people.

burnt basin
#

hmm, thanks!

#

i’m sorta looking towards academia, cuz the forefront of knowledge in any field fascinates me, but i worry that it takes a certain je ne sais quoi that one either has or doesn’t have, just as it’s impossible to be a good composer without innate musicality.

deep mango
#

I dont personally think any of that makes any sense, but I dont know anything about this

#

(and i dont think many people do)

#

If there is innate talent it is almost surely massively eclipsed by the amount of time, effort, passion, and collaboration that people put into their work

south kelp
#

all skills I'm not great at lol rip. The only thing I do have going for myself is some innate mathematical ability but I'm nothing amazing either, and certainly not enough to compensate for my lack of skill in these other areas.

deep mango
#

Well

#

If you arent super deeply invested in learning math for the rest of your life

#

Which is kind of what i'm saying

#

Idk why a career in academia would be ideal anyway

#

Academic careers kinda suck

#

There are many avenues to do more interdisciplinary research for much more money

#

In industry contexts

south kelp
#

Yeah that's probably what'll end up happening, I think I have too much chronic depression for academia lol

#

So it zaps my ability to be passionate about pretty much anything :s

#

That said math is still what I'm most passionate about, it's just a low bar to contend for that lol

deep mango
#

I kind of feel that tbh

#

The more math I do the more people I find who are willing to just think about math almost every day all day

#

And that is not me

#

People will be like "OMG i took a day off from math, this is so unusual!" which is awesome, and yeah I used to also think that way in undergrad. But now I take days off from math a whole lot

#

Maybe that will stop soon

#

Anyway, getting more and more comfortable with there being multiple routes towards fulfillment

what was the 2nd conference about?

deep mango
#

Tbf the conference had like

#

Really really great people

deep mango
#

One set of lectures was about long time behavior of fluids

errant ridge
#

ooh

#

like the solutions not blowing up?

deep mango
#

One set of lectures was about fluids in nonsmooth domains (think like boxes with corners)

deep mango
#

Not what anyone at the conference was stupid enough to address

errant ridge
deep mango
#

The last set of lectures was about turbulence structures in fluids

#

I guess the closest to the million dollar question

#

Anyway that was cool

errant ridge
#

turbulence structures?

deep mango
#

It was about how turbulence manifests as a fractal structure of vortices that align themselves in perpendicular layers around the previous layer

errant ridge
deep mango
#

The vortices in the smaller layer compress the larger layer, the larger layer stretches vortices in the lower layer

#

Eventually the larger layer dissipates and the smaller layer creates its own smaller vortices

#

Around it

#

Something something biot savart law

errant ridge
#

wow

deep mango

So this model (which is extremely crude but heuristically reasonable) actually lets you derive kolmogorovs' 5/3s law

errant ridge
#

i dont see how the biot savart law comes into this catThink

Which describes how the energy is distributed among different sizes of vortices in a turbulent fluid

#

errant ridge
#

people have solved the navier stokes in 2D right? has it been done in higher dimensions than 3 and 4? because I keep seeing this "pattern" in math where like you can do stuff easily in 1 and 2 dimensions and easily in 5 and above dimensions but 3 and 4 dimensions is where stuff gets really hard don't know why bleakkekw like you can find lots of problems like that

To be more serious (which I know none of you fucks want) I do think it's perfectly fine to get mad at people for fucking things up carelessly when you hand them the reigns on things, and I still do get mad all the time. The difference comes in with how, when, and to whom you express that anger

#

Because being directly mad at that person in the moment is almost always going to fuck things up further

#

So a skill to build here is the "delay mechanism" where I save some angry panic episode up in a little box, like physically localized sorta. And then it gets to spring out when I'm in the right space, or if needed it gets slowly vented from the box

#

how do the help channels work, why are there so many unused hidden ones

#

Do they start up again when the active channels all get used up?

ancient flame
#

well there are the ones that are occupied plus 3-5 available (I think the exact number depends on how many channels are occupied since it makes sense that if there are a lot of channels occupied, a lot of people want to open channels) and then the ones that are hidden to save space

#

if an available channel becomes occupied, a hidden channel takes its spot, and it seems to be in numerical order, so the hidden channel with the lowest number is next to be on the available list
