Im doing maclaurin olympiad soon, and was looking over past papers. None of the maths is beyond my understanding but I was wondering if anyone had advice on the systems of thinking that lead to solutions, as a lot of it seems to be pulling really random knowledge that somehow perfectly combines to make the answer

there's not much advice i can give besides doing a bunch of problems - patterns in solutions tend to pop up then

Its just like, you get a parallelogram and suddenly you are splitting it into triangles, using the sine rule to get a scale factor ratio between sides, using that to prove triangles are similar and getting an area ratio, then expressing that as an area of the original parallelogram, and it perfectly converts into the ratio of CX:XD on one random side

And I just wondered if there was method behind the madness

well there are like general methods that you would take when you find yourself with a specific type of geo, num theory, etc problem

like for your question, i would likely go searching for ways to apply the sine rule or similar triangles (since it's a parallelogram)

This is ICMC 2019. I noticed that apart from the given complex number the following will also work:
(iRt(3)+1)^2020 + (iRt(3)-1)^2020

This is a complex number with same magnitude as the one given in the solution but a different angle.

My question is a generalization of the process. Are these two the only solutions in terms of complex numbers? How do we know we have found all?

I don't think the numerical value of the answer is very useful in this context.

uhh cuz the numbers eventually will all cancel out to a real number so it must be r(e^iθ + e^-iθ) and the r is always fixed and we can add any multiple of pi/2 to θ which gives all the solutions which are all the same

1. I gave two solutions that are "different". Angle of pi/6 and pi/3. How do we know that there are (or aren't) any more "different" solutions.
2. Can you explain why adding pi/2 to theta does not change the solution? For example adding 2pi does not change because it is the same angle. But why pi/2?
