hi, i am a fourth year comp sci student who has no competition math background, I wanted to get into it and here i am, i tried reading undergraduate level books about combinatorics, number theory and graph theory. I was able to read them and come up with solutions but it took me so much time because I have so much gaps in my math that i just spend most of the time rederiving results that are not relevant to my specific problem, i feel like I went straight to advanced stuff while i lack the basics, i have formal training in undergrad comp sci math but it doesnt help much because it just doesn't feel similar to problem oriented math,

now the question is, what do you guys recommend, should I like train highschool level olympiad so that I gain some maturity and the things i had to rethink about become trivial therefore i can focus on the given problems?

I think maybe it's worth it to ask yourself why you want to do competition math

olympiad maths is a very specific flavour of maths that requires really little background knowledge but ask incredibly convoluted questions

if you're just interested in maths in general, there is no reason to restrict yourself to competition maths, which, imo, gives a rather skewed view of what higher maths is like

many times in my comp sci degree i encounter material that requires thinking where people I know who do competition math find to be trivial, and they basically appear to be smarter

especially in competitive programming

whenever you’re finding ways to do like a certain amount of something, like two (because it’s a pair) out of six in this case we are using this formula. n!/(n-r)! which basically means the total amount (6) over 6 minus the amount you’re finding (2). so we get 6!/4! which is 720/24 or 30. then we have to count the amount of ways there are two neighbroing colors because they said they can’t touch, which is six. so 30 possibilities minus 6 possibilities where they touch equals 24 (30-6)
