from what i know and since i own both, these books are great for contest prep. partially because they were ahead of their time when written, but also because they focus on problem solving skills and deep understanding - not just brute memorization

in shorter terms, they give u the skills to solve problems

for the knowledge, i recommend downloading books like edexcel maths GCSE higher tier
GCSE is all about formula memorisation, and it can be all memorised, unlike a-level, so the book is good

about that...if you can achieve exceptionally high marks in past papers, and show him you are perfectly capable of doing higher-level maths (e.g., above 40-45), he has no reason to deny you
