the beauty of AMC8 is that it uses a lot of familiar concepts in unfamiliar ways

for instance, a lot of questions use Pythagoras, but in a very creative way

and definitely, the only way to get better (besides practicing) is to read and watch a lot of maths outside school

you get better at any language through lots of reading and listening (active immersion), and the same is true for maths or any other form of communication (so coding also, definitely)

the stats problems on STEP are always quite easy (compared to the rest of the paper) and they're always unpopular cus stats in general is kinda unpopular so they never seem to make them harder either
