Complementary counting obviously, and then focus just on the vertical lines, and the square the result. So, our answer is 1 - (x/100)^2 where x is how many ways can each of the two choose two random parallel lines (vertical for this case) without them overlapping (they can be same line, but no overlap). I got 60 somehow, and so I got answer of 16/25. But i don't think it's right

My main split is by the distance between the leftmost edge and rightmost edge of either of the two regions:

  • if it's 4 then there are 3+2+1=6 possibilities, depending on the width of the gap being 0, 1, or 2 columns.
  • if it's 3, then there are 2+1=3 possibilities for the gap width and positions, times 2 for whether the outside column is to the left or to the right.
  • if it's 2, then only one possibility for the gap, but there are 3 ways to choose the two neighboring columns.
    The total is now 6+6+3=15, and multiply by 2 to account for which player is choosing the left region, giving 30.
