it's meant, as the name implies, as a scripting language for the web

inspired by Java's conventions, it was made to allow easy automation of websites inside the browser

java on the other hand is a compiled language that produces jvm bytecode; the goal behind this is a wide range of compatible platforms as only the jvm needs to be ported. through it, other languages like kotlin or groovylang can interact with java code as well. java is typed, follows a somewhat oop approach, and is more strict on errors etc.

js is more suitable for simple automation tasks, while java is meant for actual projects

this makes it almost imminent that Groovy is made in java, not js
