you've barely covered the very essentials of Python, and ML is a huge leap from that

my friend is willing to refer me to his company. He advised me to build two ML projects and understand them thoroughly so I can confidently list them on my resume

i know nothing about ml, i do have experience with analysis in ms Excel due to my current work, where we do cost estimation of primary healthcares by govt in my country

sounds like you should do a project like that in Python, but it will be a lot to learn.

if I focus on data analytics instead of ML, what path should I follow, which projects should I build, and where should I learn from?

I usually recommend that people build a classifier as their first ML project, using some simple CSV data like the Titanic dataset.

How long do you have to do this?

I can't imagine that you'll have enough time to learn enough about ML to be particularly capable as an ML engineer, so if this referral situation is serious, they must expect to have you do some on the job learning.
