when i do x[i] outside of the while loop, it gives the value of 2 that i need, however inside the while loop it given me an error

Well, with that break you don't get into the while loop. I assume it was not there before.

Ignoring that, num_tab is the total number of cells in the grid? Won't i inherently exceed the dimensions.

I would put a print(i, x) at the top of your loop to see what i is and what you're indexing. That should at least show the problem.
