I want to impress a recruiter at AllTrails, a trail mapping company. It's a bit like Google Maps for hiking trails. What are some public datasets I could use and how should I use them to show I can perform data analysis in this domain?

Remember to:

  • Ask your Python question, not if you can ask or if there's an expert who can help.
  • Show a code sample as text (rather than a screenshot) and the error message, if you've got one.
  • Explain what you expect to happen and what actually happens.

:warning: Do not pip install anything that isn't related to your question, especially if asked to over DMs.

Oh and what Python packages should I use? I'm thinking numpy and matplotlib

Some ideas I have floating around:

  • Scrape Texas state park day pass availability from their reservation website to find most popular times people go, and how far in advance things are booked out. Make a heat map of some kind? If I could graph or predict seasonal trends that'd be cool
  • Look at Twitter accounts of various national parks and figure out which one is most popular, and which one gets the most interactions on their tweets
#
  • Scrape the tweets of people who tweet at alltrails and look for similarities between them, to figure out what a typical AllTrails customer looks like
