regal jetty
#

should I just fuck it and delete the manjaro

tardy stag
#

like this: c: and d: are Windows drive letters. Do you have one hard drive in your computer or 2?

mint lodge
#

That's up to you dude

regal jetty
#

trying to dual boot but im more lost than …idk im just lost

tardy stag
#

if you have 1, and linux is on it already, you will need to partition the drive before installing windows

tardy stag
#

is the one with linux on it plugged in?

mint lodge
#

Okay, are they both SSDs?

regal jetty
#

I know my linux is on C: because the 100gb is used up

#

they’re both plugged in

#

one is fast, the 100gb C: and the D: is slow

#

hdd or whatever

mint lodge
#

Drive 0 is probably Linux

tardy stag
#

how large is your linux drive?

regal jetty
#

possible

tardy stag
#

when you are in linux?

regal jetty
#

oh

#

12gb left

#

it ran out of space so I deleted crap

#

I think im going to go to windows, get rid of linux, then go back and dual boot from windows onto linux. How does that sound

tardy stag
#

ok so drive 0 partition 1 is your efi partition probably, and drive 0 partition 1 is your main linux partition

regal jetty
#

So instead of dual booting windows from linux i do the opposite

mint lodge
#

If you actually want to dual boot, I would recommend using diskpart from the Windows recovery command line, clean the disk entirely (assuming there's no data on it), then installing Linux again

tardy stag
#

yes it is actually easier to install Linux next to an already installed Windows

regal jetty
#

all my stuff is on github, I need nothing

#

cool so im wiping all the shit

regal jetty
#

im pressing format

tardy stag
#

grub automatically detects Windows and works around it, and also Windows wipes stuff from Linux when it's installed sometimes

mint lodge
#

grub works so much better when Windows is installed first

regal jetty
#

say what

mint lodge
#

Yeah you'll need to clean it first

#

Plus that's your HDD, isn't it

regal jetty
#

yeah

#

same thing for the c tho

mint lodge
#

Why are you wiping that

regal jetty
#

it shows the same for c

#

i dont need the crap on D

#

or C

tardy stag
tardy stag
mint lodge
#

There's a command line in the Windows installation media

#

That they're in right now

tardy stag
#

tru but i really don't know windows cli commands

regal jetty
#

from here what the hell do I do

tardy stag
#

if you do feel free. or google.

mint lodge
#

I think it's F8 or F10 to open command prompt

#

Or shift + F8

regal jetty
#

neither f8 or f10 open command prompt

#

nor does shift + f8

mint lodge
#

shift + f10?

regal jetty
#

shift + f10 does

#

ye

#

got it

#

soo

mint lodge
#

Ayoooo

#

Okay

simple pecan
#

ah i see you guys got it working

regal jetty
regal jetty
mint lodge
#

diskpart

simple pecan
#

ah gotcha haha

hazy laurel
#

Enabled*

regal jetty
mint lodge
#

Except when it is and you give yourself a bad day

mint lodge
#

Nice! Now try to install Windows on that disk

regal jetty
#

it still shows

tardy stag
regal jetty
#

it shows that for them all

mint lodge
#

Back out to the beginning of the install media and go back in

hazy laurel
#

I... Have a strong hatred for Manjaro

mint lodge
#

Well apparently they were

using the worst possible arch based distro that amplifies problems and breakages by breaking things more and their own way

regal jetty
#

hazah

hazy laurel
#

Undoubtedly one of the worst distributions, but I'm not equipped to argue at the moment lol

regal jetty
#

damn everyones hating on manjaro

mint lodge
#

Hell yeah

hazy laurel
tardy stag
#

one minute your ssd is only 100 gb

regal jetty
#

just so you guys know, I tried fedora, debian, ubuntu 5 or 6 times and it broke every time, and then finally manjaro

tardy stag
#

and you are installing windows on the entire thing?

regal jetty
tardy stag
#

you can partition off a small part for the root directory of your linux install so it will run fast too

mint lodge
#

You can shrink the Windows partition later

tardy stag
#

linux needs less space

hazy laurel
#

If you're having both Ubuntu and Debian break, one can only assume PEBKAC

regal jetty
mint lodge
#

Yeah they'll only need like 25GB for Linux

regal jetty
#

i just disliked debian

hazy laurel
mint lodge
#

Problem exists between keyboard and chair

regal jetty
#

probably does

hazy laurel
#

Lol

regal jetty
#

with how confused I am right now

hazy laurel
#

Ubuntu is notorious for being easy to use and stable

#

Manjaro is known for the complete opposite but that's not what it advertises

tardy stag
#

nvm recommended size for windows c drive is like 100GB

regal jetty
tardy stag
#

you can probably get away with less, but you will have to be careful with updates and delete the old versions

#

and put absolutely everything on D:/

regal jetty
#

on a seperate note, anyone know any ways to get a window token?

hazy laurel
hazy laurel
mint lodge

Whenever Windows is installed and set up, press windows key + R and type diskmgmt.msc
Right click the largest partition on the C:/ drive and click "shrink"

mint lodge

Is it a custom build?

regal jetty

Hm

tardy stag

you can use win10 without a code you know

regal jetty

ew

mint lodge

There are registry fixes for the product activation watermark

tardy stag

if you really want to you can modify the registry to remove the watermark iirc

mint lodge

:)

regal jetty

eh

#

Hey sick

I dont need a product key

regal jetty

idk

#

im just rolling with the punches

keen burrow
#

don't.. do stuff just because someone tells you to without trying to understand why

#

i am absolutely not saying gdubs has ill intends, but you should be careful in general to not fall for scams and stuff like that

mint lodge
#

It's not malicious. Read back through the thread if you're interested

#

Good advice, of course

#

What we're doing is shrinking the C:/ partition by 25000 MB to give enough space to have a small Linux installation

keen burrow
#

that's cool

mint lodge
keen burrow
#

good luck with your install!

jovial island
regal jetty
#

@mint lodge which is the smallest partition in the screenshot? i dont wanna break anything

mint lodge
#

The C:/ drive is the one you'll want to shrink

regal jetty
#

which one

#

the C: itself

#

I dont get why I have 3 things in disk 0

mint lodge
#

Yes, the C: itself.

Then refer to the screenshot I posted and replace the highlighted box with 25000

also

mint lodge

How'd that shrink go?

regal jetty

it aint big enough

My bad, 25000

Not 250000

regal jetty

ah lol

mint lodge

Orders of magnitude matter lol

regal jetty

you have one fat ass drive

mint lodge
#

Yeah lol

#

250 != 25

regal jetty
#

alright I shrunk it

#

so

#

when I dual boot

#

I select that part

#

and now I stick everything I download on D:

#

oops

mint lodge
#

Well, you still need to create installation media for whatever Linux you want to install

regal jetty
#

yeah, on my usb

regal jetty
#

its gonna be manjaro again, I dont get the problem you guys have lol

#

I like it alot

mint lodge

I would recommend using Manjaro Linux out of pure spite for that one person

@sturdy relic Hi, I'm home from school now. You said you wanted to learn rust, I suggest starting with the official rust book, https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/. Its pretty in depth, it'll take you through the basics, up to more advanced concepts as well. Rust by example https://doc.rust-lang.org/rust-by-example/ is also a great resource, it shows different code snippet examples you can reference. Learning rust with all too many linked lists is also pretty solid as a resource https://rust-unofficial.github.io/too-many-lists/. To install rust, I recommend using rustup, https://rustup.rs/, It's a simple shell script. Theres also this, https://www.rust-lang.org/tools/install, which talks you through more stuff related to installation, and also directs you to rustup.

wicked hollow
#

@vapid flare re: "C++ is stronger", that depends on what you mean by "stronger". C++ is more expressive than C - it lets you code at a higher level. That's a strength. But C++ also is much more complex than C, and it's much more difficult to understand what a line of code will do at a glance in C++ than in C. That's a weakness.

rare moat
vapid flare
rare moat
#

yeah, because C++ has the flexibility of being a low level language, but not being as painful to write stuff in C with.

robots are more often written in C though, i believe.

this is probably because of C's size.

microcontrollers and robots are typically written in C, you need to save every byte you can sometimes

Rust can achieve about the size of C binaries, AFAIK (just needs a -C prefer-dynamic, since Rust likes to link statically by default). The normal size, that is - I don't know how they compare when you try to squeeze every kilobyte of size out of both.

wicked hollow
#

memory usage is the big one, though, for why C (or C++ that mostly uses the C subset) is usually used on microcontrollers. A lot of the more expressive C++ features, like exception handling and object oriented programming with virtual dispatch, cost extra space and memory at runtime.

I'm trying to think of some circumstance, where I'd chose to write raw SQL queries over something like Entity Framework (ORM)

round moss
#

if you need good query performance, an experienced hand writing one will beat an ORM

elfin vine
#

If the people reading your code know SQL, then an ORM may be in their way

#

If the people reading your code doesn't know SQL, then raw SQL may be hard to write

#

I prefer raw SQL, if someone doesn't know SQL they can just use an ORM and then copy the query or something.

Besides, either you bite your tongue and learn an ORM, or you bite your tongue and learn SQL

daring jay
#

I know basic SQL, I just prefer ORMs typically

elfin vine
#

There's a learning curve to both really

elfin vine
#

I also think it encourages doing everything in Python and not trying to do as much as possible in SQL

daring jay
#

I don't know all that much SQL, so ORMs can typically do what I want

elfin vine
#

The majority of the time you're just doing simple SELECTs and WHEREs

jovial island
elfin vine
#

Maybe a JOIN somewhere

jovial island
#

i know even a bit more advanced SQL as i had 2 subjects dedicated to ONLY sql

#

but it'd just be painful to get the data into a program using Raw SQL, say in C#

#

i'd have to manually convert the data to appropriate type

#

just a mess all-in-all

#

in fact, i've never written raw SQL inside a C# program

#

all raw SQL i did was done either via CLI tool or MySQL workbench

#

and wasn't meant to be projected into a program

elfin vine
jovial island
#

as in

#

if i want to store like users

#

I'd 1st need to make a table manually, and then I'd need to parse info of each user to appropriate SQL query

#

whereas ORM does it for me

#

i can just have user1, instance of User

#

and it'll just go into DB with ORM

#

with raw SQL I'd need something like
create database (insert appropriate form and types);

#

and then insert into table values (*parse from object to something SQL supports*)

#

just a nightmare

#
  • ORM protects from SQL injections
#

whereas raw SQL I'd potentially need to manually check

#

just an awful waste of time and effort

#

raw joins were kinda fun tho, not gonna lie

sinful sun
#

Its a waste if youre bad at it, sure

elfin vine
#

Because you use a library right? And not just... Like a TCP/IP + TLS socket

jovial island
#

i mean

#

what library can help transfer an object to a SQL string?

!d datetime.datetime.strptime

clever salmonBOT
#

classmethod datetime.strptime(date_string, format)```
Return a [`datetime`](https://docs.python.org/3/library/datetime.html#datetime.datetime "datetime.datetime") corresponding to *date\_string*, parsed according to *format*.

This is equivalent to:

```py
datetime(*(time.strptime(date_string, format)[0:6]))
```  [`ValueError`](https://docs.python.org/3/library/exceptions.html#ValueError "ValueError") is raised if the date\_string and format can’t be parsed by [`time.strptime()`](https://docs.python.org/3/library/time.html#time.strptime "time.strptime") or if it returns a value which isn’t a time tuple. For a complete list of formatting directives, see [strftime() and strptime() Behavior](https://docs.python.org/3/library/datetime.html#strftime-strptime-behavior).
