Hello, I am trying to learn python. I have tried a udemy course but felt as if I didn't learn anything but the basic. Can someone point me in the right direction ?

#

No I haven’t. That is what I am in the process of doing. I only took the beginner course of this. The 1.0 but can’t find it to send a link.

distant hazel
#

I think 2.0 might just mean it's the 2nd version/release of the course

#

but if you know the basic things like lists, sets, dicts, can write functions and understand basic flow control.. I'd say that's enough for you to start coding your own small projects

gray rune
#

@rough sapphire

but im using windows only now and i dont very much use microsoft features
You get more performance on a Windows, for a lower price, and macs is not the best for coding and everyday use as well. Macs are expensive to repair if you don't have Applecare, Lenovo gives you the option to extend the warranty by 1 year and upgrade it to Premium Care for a very low price

rough sapphire
#

no, you can't get more performance on windows

#

windows laptop suck at performance

latent scaffold
#

meanwhile I am on a Windows laptop

floral apex
#

The thing I dislike about Apple is that there's a lack of variety, a lot are expensive (unless you go iPad and iPod) and they're more locked down than even Windows and Android (out of the box)

rough sapphire
gray rune
#

@rough sapphire

you can only get more if you go for PC. in laptops MAC is the best!
Not necessarily, I have a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5, Ryzen 7 4700U + 8GB RAM, sells for as low as 730 USD, it's even a convertible and that price includes 2 years of Premium Care

rough sapphire
#

like M1 laptop is not that expensive if you are in US it's affordable

rough sapphire
#

maybe i'll buy it when i visit US

gray rune
rough sapphire
#

idk

latent scaffold
floral apex
clear plume
#

It's not going to be much cheaper in the US

graceful basin

Unless you need excellent battery life, the M1 just isn't better. The IGPU is better than most IGPUs, but worse than a good DGPU

rough sapphire
gray rune
rough sapphire

I mean, an m1 mac is close to 25% more expensive here

rough sapphire
clear plume
#

Just because m1 js good doesn't mean it's the best

graceful basin
#

And no, the M1 is worse than high end AMD mobilr CPUs

rough sapphire

latent scaffold
#

The main thing swaying me away from Apple products is Apple itself

floral apex
#

I remembered someone testing a Ryzen 5 (G) without cooling, I think it was comparable to the M1

rough sapphire
gray rune
graceful basin
#

Like, I am getting an M1 Mac because battery life

floral apex
gray rune
#

Yeah Apples are good in battery life

rough sapphire
#

im in india rn and its starts from β‚Ή119900(1629.02dollars)
whats the price in US?

graceful basin

But it's not magic performance juice

latent scaffold

Why spend 1k on an ok processor and a shit OS when you could spend 700 for something with the same performance on a slightly less shit OS

gray rune
#

Agreed

latent scaffold
#

I wish we could buy laptops without an OS

gray rune
#

macOS' not the best OS to code in as well

tranquil orchid
tranquil orchid
clear plume
#

Macs are only expensive because it's Mac. Just because it had a hefty price tag doesn't mean it's worth that.

gray rune
latent scaffold
#

well I don't think that was available when I bought my Lenovo Legion 5

graceful basin
#

I mean, more people use Mac to code than linux according to the survey

rough sapphire
#

the top model of macbook air is β‚Ή238300(3236.74dollars) in my country

latent scaffold
tranquil orchid
#

Yeah, I don't think the framework one's are widely available yet, only a few countries have access. But when it rolls out to Australia I want it

graceful basin
#

@clear plume once you start optimising for battery life and weight, the M1 air is by far the cheapest

latent scaffold
#

assuming you mean the Stack Overflow survey

#

they're basically tied and Linux barely beat macOS

graceful basin
#

In the pro category iirc it lost by a few percentage points

tranquil orchid
#

I really hope it does, their first batch did well so I hope it'll continue

latent scaffold
rough sapphire
gray rune
#

Tbh, I'd prefer a Mac as an on-the-go laptop, and a PC as a desktop

latent scaffold

Speaking of which... I have a question

rough sapphire
latent scaffold
#

Why do people call Windows computers "PC"s

nova lagoon
#

macs are pcs πŸ˜›

latent scaffold
#

and it's always ever macOS users

floral apex
#

For me personally, I'll just avoid the Apple ecosystem entirely, unless I have like some financial motivation to develop there

graceful basin
#

Dell XPS, X1 carbon, HP envy are the most comparable, and they are more expensive

tranquil orchid
#

Are PC's not just personal computers? So... any computer that you own

clear plume
latent scaffold
floral apex

For daily I'm fine with either Linux or Windows

nova lagoon

or wait did the 12 get slim

floral apex

The last time we went ultra-thin, iPhones got curved screens for free because of the weight of a human ass

latent scaffold
#

I don't think so

clear plume
#

Anyways ima head off to bed, nice to stop by again.

tranquil orchid
#

I mean I don't mind things being slim, just don't over-engineer your products so that they break faster and then can't be repaired

gray rune
#

gn

#

No Apple product is unable to be repaired as long as you pay enough money

latent scaffold
#

I'm curious to see where the right to repair movement will go

tranquil orchid

That's why I want the framework laptop, it's a step in the right direction that needs to become more common

floral apex
latent scaffold

._.

floral apex

And look at Apple today

gray rune

Plot twist: Apple actually started this whole right to repair thing

latent scaffold

idk, with right to repair there have been a lot of things that rose to the top from Apple's history

#

I've seen so many YouTube videos about it from various tech YouTubers

actually, it may be sth else

#

this I would expect to just work

graceful basin

so it is an oddity in string interpolation

I should really read the docs for posix shells

latent scaffold
#

What were you doing before?

honest star
#

Okay, so I see people what a special bar-like input thing telling them where they are in their directory or what have you. Is that possible in pwsh?

graceful basin
#

yes

#

starship will work, though I had issues with it being slow.

latent scaffold
#

tbh that's PowerShell in general

graceful basin
#

powershell is realtime

latent scaffold
#

or so I've noticed

graceful basin
#

starship was not

latent scaffold
#

I mean like any time you do any sort of configuration with it, it gets slow

graceful basin
#

also, why doesn't zsh let you delete a line once you write it

latent scaffold
#

even loading a profile with a simple echo, it takes a few seconds

latent scaffold
#

oh, I see

graceful basin
#

may be ssh, but when I press backspace at the end of a line, it just beeps and doesn't go back up

latent scaffold
#

there might be a shortcut for that

graceful basin
#

oh hey, fish is already installed on this system

tender smelt
#

i never had any speed issues with starship lol

latent scaffold
#

but may not be entirely what you're looking for

#

nvm, probably will work for you

graceful basin
#

the issue is that powershell overall takes ~80ms to capture process output

#

so starship cannot be faster than those 80ms

#

which is too slow for a prompt

latent scaffold
#

idk, I've always found PowerShell when configured to be incredibly slow

graceful basin
#

it is not super fast, but is realtime on my system, and that's all I need

#

it is a small cost to pay for a useable shell

latent scaffold
#

I just don't think there should be any cost

graceful basin
#

yeah, powershell is not perfect

tender smelt
#

80ms is barely noticeable

graceful basin
#

sadly, it is still the best

#

I notice it

#

it was very annoying

latent scaffold
graceful basin
#

even on linux it is much nicer

tender smelt
#

oh you're right, it's like a tiny stutter

graceful basin
#

look at ps and tell me it is useful

#

completely nonstandard, nigh unparsable since it can't quote its columns, your best bet is to grep through it

#

best hope you know which of the 3 dozen abbreviation you want to pass to -o

latent scaffold
#

Can't you make your own format?

graceful basin
#

not really, no.

#

meanwhile Get-Process gives you a nice table you can view per column, filter

say you have 16x16 box. you're at (0,0) and want to reach (16,16). and you can either go up(1step) or right(1step), how many possible paths will be there.

#

don't implement bfs for this btw.

I really need to work on permutations a lot.

#

sure!

dapper dew
#

A bit out of order, but that was an example problem that 3.38 was based off of

rough sapphire
#

aight!

acoustic moss
#

you need 16 up moves and 16 right moves in any order
so you need to arrange 32 moves, and there's 2 categories with 16 duplicates each
so you have a total of 32!/16!16! = 32C16

inland wolf
#

sum of the dot product of Tension and acceleration of whatever the tension is pulling = 0 btw

#

it will help Smile

#

@solemn leaf Smile

rough sapphire
#

makes sense. I explained something very similar. basically we need 16 u and 16 l. as in up and left.

so if we just put it as total possible string it'd be 32!/16!16!

#

altho i took hella time while understanding that! you're fucking fast duh!

does Rust have string template mechanism?

#

like kotlin has

val x="Aboo"
val y="Name: ${x}"
val short="Name $x"```
graceful basin
#

format!("Name: {}", x)is afaik the way

rough sapphire
#

so no

#

RIP

inland wolf
#

yes

graceful basin
#

I wonder if you could macro your way into such a feature

rough sapphire
#

I wouldn't expect that possiblity

inland wolf
#

does c++ have something like that

rough sapphire
#

afaik no

#

kotlin, JS, C#, Python

rough sapphire
#

i think those 4 are the major ones that I'd know of

graceful basin
#

can't forget shell and all of the languages thereforewithstanding

rough sapphire
#

i mean sure

#

yea

#

i just meant more like, programming langs, not shell ones

#

I think all shell ones have the $ thing

inland wolf
graceful basin
#

std::format exists

rough sapphire
#

yea but that kinda sucks

graceful basin
#

in some version

inland wolf
#

oh

graceful basin
#

or a stringstream

inland wolf
#

std::format is like format! ?

graceful basin
#

that's generally what I did

#

pretty much

rough sapphire
#

like

inland wolf
#

nice

graceful basin
#

it is a c++20 feature

#

so like, keep that in mind

inland wolf
#

yes

#

also when i do --std=c++20 in g++

rough sapphire
#
let x="one"
let y="two"
let combined=`${x} ${y} three` ```
inland wolf
#

it tells me to use --std=c++2a

#

is that what im supposed to use or is my compiler old

rough sapphire
#

is so much better than

let combined=x + " " + y + " there" ```
graceful basin
#

cpp20 is afaik not on by default in most compilers

rough sapphire
#

lol, point made, i made like 2 spacings errors in 2nd example

#

with the template, it's almost impossible to fudge up

graceful basin
#

yeah, string interpolation is where it's at

acoustic moss
graceful basin
#

or at least std::.format!

rough sapphire
#

i don't know julia

#

never will because i don't like niches >_>

graceful basin
#

also ruby, perl, nim (with just macros), raku, php, powershell

rough sapphire
#

C#'s way is kinda bad imo

#

i prefer the Kotlin's string templates

#
var y="one"
var x=$"{y}, two"```
inland wolf
#

doesnt c# just have {}

rough sapphire
#

yea

inland wolf
rough sapphire
#

but you need the $ before "

#

yea

inland wolf
#

oh thats cuz it was

rough sapphire
#

that's the C# demo

graceful basin
#

probably backwards compat

rough sapphire
#

kotlin allows $ in """

#

so like

#
val x="123"
val long_string="""
This is a very
long multi line
sentence. Here are some numbers
$x"""
#

C# doesn't have """

#

closest you get is @""

#

which keeps newlines

inland wolf
#

interesting

rough sapphire
#

val ?

#

whats val think

#
val x = "11"
#

hm

rough sapphire
#

python bad pithink

#

python very bad sad

#

val in kotlin means it's immutable

#

var is mutable

#
var x=1
val y=2

x=3 // all gud
y=4 // no way, nuh huh```

Apple knows how to design a UI/UX, but no matter how much Apple tries I still prefer Windows or Linux

#

Too expensive, too locked down, too little variety in their hardware

wise schooner
#

i'd switch to mac if their prices made sense lol

jovial marsh
#

on epic games

graceful basin
#

I switched to macOS for uni because it was the cheapest good option

#

but that is more due to VAT and this country not having a port

wise schooner
#

macOS was the cheapest?

graceful basin
#

yup

floral apex
wise schooner
#

ah

#

it's kind of the opposite everywhere else

jovial marsh
#

The 2016 one I have is at a decent price I would say

wise schooner
#

you could get better hardware for a much lesser price

#

(in most places)

graceful basin
#

well, the macbook air is the best in terms of battery life

wise schooner
#

if a mac is cheaper, it's worth it ig

floral apex
graceful basin
#

so you can't really beat it no matter the cost

jovial marsh
wise schooner
#

most computers last for 6-7 years and that's enough for me

jovial marsh
graceful basin
#

I have had this lenovo for 8 years now and it still works

floral apex
graceful basin
#

and I can upgrade the disk and the RAM

wise schooner
#

and i don't have an usecase fo battery life tbh, i feel 5 hour of continuous use is sufficient

graceful basin
#

(and probably even the GPU if I really tried)

#

I don't want to have to carry a charger to uni

#

since that seems like a way to lose it

jovial marsh
graceful basin
#

so I want at least 12 hours

wise schooner
floral apex
jovial marsh
graceful basin
#

ye, mac is very much a do things the one way apple intends way kinda OS

wise schooner
graceful basin
#

which is fine for me, since that's what I want

jovial marsh
wise schooner
graceful basin
#

I managed 3 without the battery dipping below 90%

wise schooner
#

basically read and write speeds

graceful basin
#

so 12 seem pretty possible

jovial marsh
#

but the 10% lasts forever

#

like 3 hours on that 10%

graceful basin
#

@jovial marshyeah, that's why I don't want a used machine, battery wear is a thing

#

that's the one thing that will degrade the most in a device

graceful basin
#

I did

wise schooner
floral apex
#

I prefer Android over iOS, I mean the entire OS is open source via AOSP. On the desktop side of things, I mean you're not really confined to a wall garden of an ecosystem, and I'd much rather use Windows or Linux to begin with

jovial marsh
wise schooner
graceful basin
#

@wise schoonernot had a reason to do so yet, but all reviews seem to indicate that I can just do that

wise schooner

rip

latent scaffold

which is why none of my software will ever work on Apple but I'm really not complaining

floral apex

As you can see I very much value flexibility/customization over a very streamlined UX and other premium experiences you may get with Apple
