They can consume basically anything that will not result in the death of an organism, which is why those who follow the Jain religion (?) can't eat onions, or any other kind of "root" vegetable

so there's a shortcut you can do when converting hexadecimal or octal to binary that you can't use when converting base 10 to binary. Namely: each octal digit represents 1 of 8 possible values. Likewise, each 3 binary digits represent 1 out of 8 possible values. That's because 8**1 == 2**3

You need to look into ||dynamic programming|| in order to make your brute force more efficient. Haven't hit an AoC problem so far this year that can't be brute forced pretty easily.
