pacman -Syu? in that case, all you did was update all of the programs that are already on your computer. in some cases it may install a new package or two if one of your current packages now requires a couple more dependencies after being updated. all of the random packages you see that you're unfamiliar with are most likely being used as dependencies for programs that you do use directly, which otherwise wouldn't work properly if you didn't have those packages installed.

pointer function is just for asynchronous calls. Suppose u want ur g(x) function to have different equations. So u might want to use those equation depending on ur situation, without the need to change it the actual code. And thats were u implement the pointer function @versed saffron
idk if i was able to explain it properly again....lol but based on what u said, it doesnt work like that, it will call the g(x)(which is in ur case, the function pointer points to this function address atm) in every iteration . In brief, its pointers function points to the address of the function u passed in as an argument(like a call back function, but the difference is u dont have to actually change the function name inside the function code -just pass it as a argument)...sorry too dumb to explain this properly haha.
