@gentle moss Wish I could but with the missus being vegetarian...

high verge
#

no one ever cleans them properly

gentle moss
#

awww

undone berry
#

get you a dishwasher

high verge
#

we have one but we mostly handwash the sieves

undone berry
#

and I don't mean the machine

gentle moss
#

on the subject of rice, the worst failure to cook rice i've ever seen was a mate of mine

high verge
#

ah

#

lol

undone berry
#

I mean a little Peruvian boy

gentle moss
#

we were playing ARMA and he brb'd to put on some rice

high verge
#

or a massive peruvian wrestler

gentle moss
#

3 hours later someone was like

plucky ridge
#

@high verge I never use that when making rice. I typically just swish the rice and water in the bowl that's part of the rice cooker, then just filter it off using my hand to keep the rice in

gentle moss
#

"how's your rice doing?"

high verge
#

yeah i do the same with pasta

gentle moss
#

and we just heard "OH FUCK"

plucky ridge
#

I end up rinsing the rice like 6 times until the water is nearly clear

high verge
#

then lose it all in the sink :(

undone berry
#

why would you handwash sieves? So much easier in a dishwasher

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss HA

gentle moss
#

some crashing and banging

#

he filled his entire house with fucking rice smoke

#

burned it to the pan

high verge
#

there's no point lower in cooking than eating pasta that's fallen into the sink when its full of food

#

yeah i imagine the pan was pretty ruined

#

like that ramen mending thing

#

just use rice

gentle moss
#

his house stank, landlord was not pleased

plucky ridge
#

In fairness that's mostly the epoxy doing the work

#

The ramen was just filler

#

Could have used toilet paper

high verge
#

'would you like some rice landlord?'

gentle moss
#

i only learned about toilet paper + superglue as a trick to patch stuff together

#

like last week

plucky ridge
#

Yep

#

It's like friggin' magic

high verge
#

Arma is probably one of the few multiplayer games where you could leave to make dinner and no one would notice for a while

gentle moss
#

i've just been mutilating other plastic items to create a "bridge" between objects

high verge
#

possibly with the exception of club penguin

plucky ridge
#

I HATE that engine

high verge
#

:)

plucky ridge
#

I don't understand how people enjoy playing ARMA

high verge
#

its a special little one

rough sapphire
#

@high verge You can play OpenTTD as multiplayer

plucky ridge
#

It's so clunky

gentle moss
#

i enjoyed the mods

plucky ridge
#

Like basic movement just HURTS

gentle moss
#

epoch / dayz

high verge
#

once you get used to it it's pretty fun

gentle moss
#

and yeah, it feels clunky as fuck but that's what you get for realism

high verge
#

i normally just play around in the mission editor

gentle moss
#

one thing i will praise it for is "alt look"

plucky ridge
#

?

undone berry
#

I remember playing DayZ with some crazy Dutch dude

gentle moss
#

being able to move the viewport but not the direction of travel or aim

undone berry
#

and we played all day on saturday, went to bed

high verge
#

oh god i do not like the a3 scifi aesthetic

#

like

gentle moss
#

by holding a button

undone berry
#

but he was still playing on Sunday

plucky ridge
#

Oh that's helpful yeah

high verge
#

apparently it was actually going to be all alien and future-y

undone berry
#

and he just did like a 50 hour gaming session for no reason

high verge
#

but they toned it down

gentle moss
#

wow

plucky ridge
#

Although I kind of instinctively do that anyway

undone berry
#

he just spent like 6 hours fishing I now remember

gentle moss
#

i think the longest session on arma dayz was probably ~16 hours

undone berry
#

get back - and there's just a truck full of fucking fish

gentle moss
#

haha

plucky ridge
#

It's a Jesus miracle!

gentle moss
#

i used to do that in WoW

#

sigh

plucky ridge
#

Make trucks full of fish?

gentle moss
#

had to wait for herbs to come back so do some fishing.

#

end up with more fish than herbs

plucky ridge
#

HA

#

Fishing was about all I ever did in Runescape

#

Fishing and burying bones

#

No idea why

high verge
#

there are certain other games which involve uh

#

burying bones

#

i don't tend to play those

undone berry
#

hmmm? Could you expand on that?

gentle moss
#

dinosaur bones?

high verge
#

expand eh?

gentle moss
#

is it a god simulator?

plucky ridge
#

It's an innuendo

undone berry
#

I'm not sure I follow - perhaps you could fill me in?

plucky ridge
#

HEYO

high verge
#

if you had a party for all the people with yellow names here, would you call it a helper function?

gentle moss
#

i'd like to continue this conversation but i have to shoot

plucky ridge
#

@high verge I mean, I know that I would but I'd get booed out of the room for it

undone berry
plucky ridge
#

Dude, okay

#

Seriously

#

Over unders are fucking magic to shoot

undone berry
#

I have 0 idea what that means

#

I gotta admit

plucky ridge
#

So when you normally think of a double barrel shotgun, it's a side by side

#

The two barrels are next to each other

undone berry
#

the Dude, okay and Seriously made me worried for a second

plucky ridge
#

An over under is one on top of the other

gentle moss
#

side by sides have left->right tracking issues

#

it is a bit of a pain

#

and right to left

plucky ridge
#

My first time shooting a gun was going with my dad and a friend of his to a trap and skeet range and we borrowed his over-under

#

Just magic

#

I don't hunt, I don't carry a gun for protection, but I would LIVE at a trap range

#

That's so relaxing to me

gentle moss
#

it's good fun

undone berry
#

is trap clay pigeons?

gentle moss
#

yup

plucky ridge
#

Yep

#

If I remember correctly, trap is one clay and skeet is two? Per round

undone berry
#

Hunting is the main kind of shooting that appeals to me. I have a friend who's incredibly good with a bow/arrow at targets, but refuses to go hunting - and it makes me sad

gentle moss
#

trap is launched from a single position

plucky ridge
#

Oh that's right

gentle moss
#

skeet is multiple positions

plucky ridge
#

Been like 12 years since I went

gentle moss
#

the most fun i've had with trap was when my dads shop got an electronic clay launcher

#

that thing could just pop pop pop them out so fast

#

launch 5 clays and try to hit all with a semi-auto

#

fun fun fun

plucky ridge
#

So rad

gentle moss
#

very expensive in shells

plucky ridge
#

Well yes

undone berry
#

how much are shells usually?

plucky ridge
#

Did he load his own?

undone berry
#

on a £/shell basis?

gentle moss
#

having to look that up

#

it's been a while

plucky ridge
#

The site I'm looking at is about $10 for 25 shells

gentle moss
#

£4.64 for a box of 25 is about as cheap as you get

plucky ridge
#

Damn

#

That's not too shabby

gentle moss
#

oh no, gamebore do some at £3.92

undone berry
#

that's pretty damn cheap

#

I was expecting like £1/shell or something

gentle moss
#

you get through 25 pretty quickly

plucky ridge
#

It's why I in general prefer shooting .22lr

short beacon
#

we talking about pew pews?

gentle moss
#

a good shoot is probably about 100 rounds

plucky ridge
#

Yeppers

short beacon
#

fun

#

ive never shot a guns o

#

*so

gentle moss
#

it's quite an experience

short beacon
#

im 13 lol

gentle moss
#

i first shot a shotgun when i was 9

#

pistol when i was 7

short beacon
#

dang nice

gentle moss
#

dad runs a gunshop so not a surprise

short beacon
#

Theres' this whole thing about gun control and both sides have good points

#

It's interesting lol

gentle moss
#

i'm british

plucky ridge
#

You have to treat them with a lot of respect

gentle moss
#

and both sides do not have good points

#

one side is awful and the other side is asking for common sense

short beacon
#

but something in the middle is best lol

undone berry
#

pistol when i was 7
i first shot a shotgun when i was 9
A man when I was 11

short beacon
#

yea

gentle moss
#

hah

short beacon
#

and which side is awful

plucky ridge
#

Free guns for everyone

gentle moss
#

the pro-gun rights side.

plucky ridge
#

That one

short beacon
#

Makes sense

gentle moss
#

simply put, after the UK and Australia banned lots of guns directly after mass shootings

plucky ridge
#

The fact that they fight so heavily against basic background checks is fucked up

gentle moss
#

mass shootings just stopped

short beacon
#

ya

plucky ridge
#

Where as we're on the rise

rough sapphire
#

Would make it easier to build a revolutionary militia

plucky ridge
#

Again

short beacon
#

chicago in trobule

#

*trouble

#

crazy how many people die there :/

gentle moss
#

chicago has decent gun laws for their state

#

the problem is the next door state does not

short beacon
#

yea

plucky ridge
#

^^

gentle moss
#

so people just get them from there.

plucky ridge
#

Missouri

gentle moss
#

Missurrraahhh

short beacon
#

Missssssurrahhh

plucky ridge
#

We have the most lax gun laws and I haaaaaaate it

#

HAAAAAAAAAATE it

short beacon
#

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE it

undone berry
#

I don't remember if you said - but do you own a gun @plucky ridge ?

short beacon
#

how often do you come across an admin that is actually a person and talks to people normally

plucky ridge
#

@undone berry I own 2

short beacon
#

half the time they ignore you lol *most of the time in other servers

gentle moss
#

every day.

plucky ridge
#

Both purely for recreational target shooting

#

I don't even keep ammunition in the house

undone berry
#

Yeah - fair enough. I think if it was sensible, I'd own a gun as well

#

but I can't

short beacon
#

yea

undone berry
#

Target shooting is more of a PITA in the UK

short beacon
#

recreational target shooting seems fun lol

gentle moss
#

tbh i'm not fussed about getting a real bang bang

#

air rifle shooting is fine

plucky ridge
#

Same

gentle moss
#

pretty much like 22lr without a kick

plucky ridge
#

Yep, but cheaper

gentle moss
#

waaaaay cheaper

#

especially a spring gun

plucky ridge
#

Which is crazy considering how cheap 22lr is already

gentle moss
#

plus you get to build one beefy muscle

short beacon
#

that sounds cheap "spring gun"

plucky ridge
#

Eh

gentle moss
#

spring guns are not cheap ¬_¬

short beacon
#

it sounds so cheap lol

plucky ridge
#

The air ones are

undone berry
#

hmmmmm - I had an air rifle when I was a kid

#

I dunno what happened to it

plucky ridge
#

The like... Daisy Red Rider ones

undone berry
#

probably my mum got rid of it

gentle moss
#

nom nom nom nom

short beacon
#

people can survive 20 shots sometimes

#

7 in the head

plucky ridge
#

Oh man that's svelte

#

I've got an airpump one as well

gentle moss
#

i've only got a little gammo spring gun

#

and a co2 capsule rifle

plucky ridge
#

@undone berry So I guess technically 3 firearms

gentle moss
#

and a .177 co2 capsule air pistol

undone berry
#

eh - I dunno, I wouldn't count air rifles as firearms - but I dunno if they technically count

plucky ridge
#

Eh, I was happy with the pump. Was like... $40ish?

short beacon
#

have u guys ever shot a sniper?

gentle moss
#

not sure how to answer that question

#

you mean a big bore rifle with a scope?

#

if so then i guess?

#

not a 50cal or anything

short beacon
#

like intervention or something like that

#

idk

plucky ridge
#

Oh man, I was at the range one time and this guy let my brother and I shoot a .44 magnum

short beacon
#

at like a range or something

#

ooooh magnum

plucky ridge
#

You shoot and it's just bright white

gentle moss
#

bet that had some kick too

plucky ridge
#

You know, it did but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be

#

I think I was just ready for it and bracing properly

#

They were hand loaded rounds, too

#

So I think they were slightly hotter than normal

#

Was an interesting experience, to say the least

gentle moss
#

can imagine

plucky ridge
#

Not really for me, though

#

I'm too practical

#

Like I get the appeal but.... eh.

short beacon
#

What are things that come to mind when I say abandoned castle

#

Like what's inside one

#

Dust, Spider webs, uhhhhh

plucky ridge
#

Bats

undone berry
#

ghosts, chains, crumbling walls, dilapidated furniture, skeletons, dungeons, broken windows

plucky ridge
#

^

short beacon
#

ooh thanks

#

im tryna write story

plucky ridge
#

Graffiti...

short beacon
#

Ooh yes

plucky ridge
#

Beer bottles, other trash left by people

undone berry
#

writing is fun

short beacon
#

can be

gentle moss
#

there's loads of graffiti in old buildings

#

like 400 year old graffiti

plucky ridge
#

The occasional homeless person

gentle moss
#

someone put effort to chisel in

short beacon
#

lol dang

undone berry
#

@plucky ridge you're too grounded in reality

plucky ridge
#

Yes.

#

Yes I am

short beacon
#

Loll

plucky ridge
#

I embraced getting older with open arms

undone berry
#

need to get you out of reality somewhat - I'd reccomend either fantasy books or something more extreme...

#

more extreme and more rule 5 breaking

gentle moss
plucky ridge
#

I mean I do have a whimsical mind and CAN have all that, but eh

short beacon
#

Do not provide or request help on projects that may break laws, breach terms of services, be considered malicious/inappropriate or be for graded coursework/exams.

#

that?

gentle moss
#

the oldest one at durham cathedral i think is this

undone berry
#

if your first thought about abandoned castles is beer bottles

short beacon
#

o wwo

undone berry
#

you need some more whimsy in yer life

short beacon
#

^lol

plucky ridge
#

@undone berry It wasn't, though

undone berry
#

true

plucky ridge
#

It was bats

undone berry
#

it was bats

short beacon
#

his first thing was bats

undone berry
#

and bats is a good one

#

good point

short beacon
#

yes

plucky ridge
#

And then you covered the rest

gentle moss
#

oh no, that's in exeter. nvm

plucky ridge
#

So I had to think on my feet

short beacon
#

big.

#

brain.

undone berry
#

That wasn't the rest. THere's also crowns, and abandoned piles of gold, and giant spiders, and mounds of cobwebs, and secret chapels, and wells with no bottom, and secret cults

#

(i'm joking, I'm reaching here - I did steal all of the cool things)

short beacon
#

lmaoo

#

Now let me ask you

plucky ridge
#

Well sure, there's also doors that lead to a netherworld, ancient stone tablets telling tales of the battles of old, possibly old armor and weapons left broken and abandoned.

short beacon
#

Something more realistic...hmm

#

What do you think of when I say...

undone berry
#

does it have to be realistic?

plucky ridge
#

But sometimes you need realism to make the whimsy more fantastic

undone berry
#

what's your actual task?

#

@plucky ridge that's very true

short beacon
#

What's a item

gentle moss
#

tbh i prefer hemlocks post-modern take on what's in a castle

short beacon
#

gimme a item

undone berry
#

an item is just a thing - a phone, chair, window etc

short beacon
#

ok

undone berry
#

crown

short beacon
#

what do you think when i say phone

gentle moss
#

i would've gone with a useless old hag who sponges off tax payer money.

undone berry
#

boring

#

dull

#

go away

plucky ridge
#

HA

gentle moss
#

"fuck off and stop ringing"

short beacon
#

lmaooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

#

so we have fantasy, and reality man

undone berry
#

I wish someone would set me english homework again

gentle moss
#

write me a haiku about a fish with two feet

plucky ridge
#

Go read To Kill a Mocking Bird and then write me a 20 page essay on the deeper meanings of the story

undone berry
#

the thing about me being set english homework was that I never did it unless I thought it was fun

#

poetry and TKAM are not fun

short beacon
#

my beginning story part

gentle moss
#

i love the fact the sequel to To Kill a Mocking Bird made whatshisface out to be some virtue signaling guy who didn't actually care about the content of the case.

short beacon
#

(clearly i dont realy know what im doing)

plucky ridge
#

Aticus Finch I think?

short beacon
#

Ooh i read kill mocking bird a fewm onths ago

plucky ridge
#

Something like that?

gentle moss
#

yeah

#

that's the fella

undone berry
#

Atticus Fitch iirc

plucky ridge
#

Ah right, two t's

undone berry
#

nope

#

finch

short beacon
#

Go set a watchman?

gentle moss
#

yeah, the 2nd book, iirc, goes into how he was doing it from prestige or w/e and didn't care about the outcome or trial

undone berry
#

Back in the day, his actor had all the girls swooning

gentle moss
#

i forget because fuck it

short beacon
#

Oh i havent read that

#

I've heard its just random

#

and not related

#

to tkam

gentle moss
#

it's definitely related

#

people don't like it though because it spoils the message of the first book

#

womp womp

short beacon
#

womp womp

plucky ridge
undone berry
#

Didn't it get released when Harper Lee was like 90?

gentle moss
#

it did indeed

#

i think there was some hubub about it being a cash-in or something

undone berry
#

probably a reason for that - she was too sensible to release it any earlier

simple sand
#

Hey anyone wanna help me modify a channel
pls
guys
I want to make my channel look better but need some help pls

gentle moss
#

i mean yeah, it's an iconic piece of literature used as a teaching aid in the US

plucky ridge
#

And it sucks

gentle moss
#

i didn't finish it

#

because it sucked.

undone berry
#

Eh - I read it without being forced and thought it was alright

plucky ridge
#

Like most books you're forced to read in English

gentle moss
#

so i watched the movie instead

short beacon
#

^ lol

gentle moss
#

and the movie was okay

plucky ridge
#

@simple sand How do you mean?

simple sand
#

whats wrong with english books

short beacon
#

most books you're forced to rad

#

read

gentle moss
#

so maybe if i finished the book it'd have been better

plucky ridge
#

I HATED Lord of the Flies

undone berry
#

It's definitely pretty on the nose and overblown, like 1984 and a lot of other similar books - but enjoyable enough

simple sand
#

what

undone berry
#

Golding is so damn hard to read

#

so dense

simple sand
#

there is a book called lord of the flies

plucky ridge
#

Yes

#

And it's a miserable experience

simple sand
#

then read better books

gentle moss
#

Lord of the Flies, A.K.A. what happens when a bunch of entitled middle class children get dumped on an island.

simple sand
#

science fiction books are the greatest

#

like greatest among the greatest

plucky ridge
#

Well yeah of course we read better books now

undone berry
#

I know the story of Lord of Flies from just general pop culture - but I could never make it through the book despite the fact I know I'd like the plot

plucky ridge
#

But these were ones that were required reading for school

simple sand
#

oh

#

those

#

books

gentle moss
#

you know it was written as a kind of response to another authors work Charlie?

simple sand
#

yeah

rough sapphire
#

I feel like Lord of The Flies would make a wonderful series

plucky ridge
#

Yes. That's what I meant by the english books bit

simple sand
#

some of them are booring

undone berry
#

no - I didn't know that

gentle moss
#

some dude wrote a book about how if some entitled middle class children got stuck on an island it'd be a utopia

undone berry
#

doesn't really change my opinion about it

plucky ridge
#

@rough sapphire I don't often call people a psychopath, but....

undone berry
#

ah

#

sure

simple sand
#

and what did u mean by @simple sand how do u mean

gentle moss
#

Golding read that

#

and was like

undone berry
#

that makes sense

gentle moss
#

"lol no"

rough sapphire
#

@plucky ridge I mean, it would be a wonderful series if done right.

undone berry
#

I don't think any series focused on kids would work well

plucky ridge
#

I mean....

undone berry
#

kids are little shits

plucky ridge
#

Lost

#

There, it's done better

rough sapphire
#

Lost was trash though

gentle moss
#

Lost fucking sucks

simple sand
#

huh

plucky ridge
#

Yet better than LotF

gentle moss
#

hmmmm

undone berry
#

LotF has a good plot

#

just hard to read writing

gentle moss
#

sorry, i'm just trying to remember the plot of lost

plucky ridge
#

I'm not super keen on torturing of your fellow man and child killing

gentle moss
#

and my brain decided to shut down

simple sand
#

yeah

undone berry
#

well - that doesn't make it bad

plucky ridge
#

@gentle moss that means you remembered it

simple sand
#

i need help

#

to modify a channel

#

that is

gentle moss
#

yeah but we're talking about books

undone berry
#

@simple sand go ask in ot0

gentle moss
#

and use the system

plucky ridge
#

If it's for Python

gentle moss
#

or check in the #discord-bots channel if you're doing it with a bot

plucky ridge
#

If not then yeah, OT.

gentle moss
#

or try another ot channel

undone berry
#

point is: not here

simple sand
#

LOL

gentle moss
#

i really need to read a fiction book soon

plucky ridge
#

Point could have been made a bit more softly, gents

undone berry
#

Fiction books are very good

#

would recommend

gentle moss
#

they're unreal

#

¬_¬

simple sand
#

thats why they are good

#

they have imagination

plucky ridge
#

@gentle moss But can they host a tournament?

undone berry
#

I've seen several tournaments between books

simple sand
#

a tournament of what readinng books???

undone berry
#

uh

#

SPFBO is one that I can think of off the top of my head

simple sand
#

that exists

gentle moss
#

a book off

simple sand
#

like book tournament

undone berry
#

Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off

plucky ridge
#

It was an Unreal Tournament joke

#

I'm not making good ones today

undone berry
#

well if the books are real, it's not really an unreal tournament

#

more of a real tournament about unreal things

gentle moss
#

yeah, you're a bit off hemlock

#

99 not there.

simple sand
#

whats the point of books reading tournament

gentle moss
#

because it's Unreal Tournament 99

plucky ridge
#

Was that added retroactively?

gentle moss
#

i think it was added in the GOTY edition

#

they took an interesting approach with yearly naming after that though

plucky ridge
#

Ah right right

gentle moss
#

UT2k3, UT2k4

undone berry
#

How can people work 9-5? I've worked for like 2 hours, and spent the rest of the day BSing in here - and I still want to go to bed right now

gentle moss
#

then UT3

plucky ridge
#

@undone berry Time flies when you have stuff to do or you don't have access to a compy

gentle moss
#

yeah, pissing about in here is how we get through the 9-5

#

otherwise i'd just be reading the news or some shit

undone berry
#

I have stuff to do though - I just don't want to do it right now

gentle moss
#

oh, i'm doing audits

#

so that's a whole lot of waiting

undone berry
#

I think my problem is just a lack of work ethic

#

lazy bastard

gentle moss
#

nice

#

hi5

#

same boat.

plucky ridge
#

I just don't have a lot on my plate

gentle moss
#

if it's not something fun or new to do or get invested in it's kinda just meh

undone berry
#

what are you auditing?

gentle moss
#

right now i'm doing an audit of windows patch levels and an audit of a company's powershell versions to see if i need to upgrade them before i can run a script to disable USB media

#

i'm always auditing windows patch levels

#

fucking sticky wicket of a problem at the moment

#

we're at 65 - 70% "fully patched" consistently

#

and our RMM tool is not being helpful as to tell us why the other ~30% isn't patching in line with the rest

plucky ridge
#

Doesn't help that Microsoft keeps putting out breaking patches

gentle moss
#

out of band patches aren't so much the issue

#

moving over from Win7 patching structure to Win10 patching structure is just... urg

#

you have far less control about when / what something patches

#

and the RMM tool itself, as admitted by Datto, has problems getting patching information from the Windows API

#

so that ~30% patching gap could just be a false report

#

but we have no idea

plucky ridge
#

Good ol' Datto

gentle moss
#

some parts of the RMM tool i really like, but it's absolute garbage compared to the control and quality of ConnectWise (formerly Labtech)

#

doing any sort of review or audit of systems is much harder

#

Labtech would store info about a machine in a database on a server, so you could query practically anything you wanted even if the machine was off

#

in Datto it has to go and directly communicate with the agent to get information

plucky ridge
#

Probably a really stupid question, but would doing something like a system file check help on those 30% possibly?

gentle moss
#

which means if Ian from Accounting turned his computer off and is out for the week

#

he doesn't get caught in the audit

plucky ridge
#

Just to make sure it's not some weird system file conflict keeping things from going through?

gentle moss
#

systems are fine. there are identical systems but one will patch and one wont

#

and it's not consistently the same machines, which is a head fuck

plucky ridge
#

I know you can wake on LAN but is there a power on on LAN?

gentle moss
#

wake on LAN is power on LAN

plucky ridge
#

Ah, so it'll do both

#

Okay

#

I thought it only worked from a sleep state

gentle moss
#

nah, it'll work from off

#

Datto's WoL feature leaves a lot to be desired.

#

it requires you to have a probe/node in the network

#

which if they've got a server or a dedicated PC for us, is fine

#

we just make that the node

plucky ridge
#

Would it not be wiser to do a PS script to push the wake signal to all of the systems before doing the RMM stuff?

#

Or is that not really an option

gentle moss
#

but if they're just a company with PC's and no server

#

not really an option

plucky ridge
#

I'm probably asking dumb stuff, sorry

gentle moss
#

nah

plucky ridge
#

This is the side I don't get to see much of

gentle moss
#

perfectly reasonable suggestions

plucky ridge
#

Like all of this for our systems is handled by our contractors

#

Okay, so just so I'm on the same page, is it program updates that aren't syncing properly or system updates

gentle moss
#

windows updates

plucky ridge
#

Gotcha

#

Well I don't know if it helps, but from my experience over the last month there have been lots of updates they've pushed that required me to do a sfc /scannow just to get things working properly again. Or the Windows Update troubleshooter.

#

No particular reason WHY it seems to be doing it, but thems the breaks

gentle moss
#

yeah, if it was a consistent problem with certain machines that'd make sense

#

but it's a roaming issue

plucky ridge
#

Oh no

#

It's not a consistent per machine thing

#

I had these things trigger on machines that never had issues previously

gentle moss
#

yeah but if that was the problem it wouldn't update until you sfc'd, right?

plucky ridge
#

Yes and no

#

Some apply, some don't

#

I really don't have an in depth reason or explanation.

gentle moss
#

and that's not what we're seeing. we're seeing Machine A be in the 30% one month

#

then be fully patched next month

#

but all of a sudden Machine B is in the 30%, when last month it was fine

plucky ridge
#

But like you said, it's hard to trust that metric since even the vendor says it's not reliable

gentle moss
#

yeah, and we're not the only ones complaining

#

i've got a meeting with one of their RMM technical people sometime next month

plucky ridge
#

Would you be okay with keeping me in the loop with that? We don't use that particular system, but it does have me curious and might shed light on other issues here

gentle moss
#

sure

#

i love to bitch about patching

plucky ridge
#

HA

#

Part of the fun of IT is getting to rant, honestly

gentle moss
#

#

any good website dev suggestions?

rough sapphire
#

what kind of websites?

#

i was thinking about making a troll site that just displayed trump tweets

olive schooner
#

any kind

#

jus wanna make something good

rough sapphire
#

I decided to make the default todo app everyone makes to try out their first frontend framework. I'm adjust to how different it is from what Im used to.

But I didnt really follow a guide exactly, I just looked a project and tried to make it be my own thing by looking at how the components seem to work and looking up the directives, which i still dont get how to do everything i need to do yet.

I want to actually have it able to be a download manager instead of a todo list but i figured that the todo list exercise would work for adding urls to a list.

#

i dont really like webdev

#

but it seems tho

#

its still very relevant

#

and popular

olive schooner
#

thats pretty good

#

web dev will always be relevant and popular

rough sapphire
#

Yeah, but the thing is that the approach to web dev will probably not always be the same one as there are already a millions things in the tech stack that you can pick from and match together for different things.

#

i hate doing the front end stuff

#

like making ur thing look nice and all

#

Yeah, it's not my favorite thing either but I have some ability to do it. The thing is, I can only do it with CSS really up until now. And very minimal vanilla JS which isnt needed too much for anything.

olive schooner
#

hmm

rough sapphire
#

But as far as massive front JS development, I dont like a lot of things about it.

olive schooner
#

any suggestions for some useful sites that i can make?

rough sapphire
#

I mean... So do you want to make a web application or something that serves content? Like, is it a utility, or a blog, forum, image sharing thing?

graceful basin
#

make some board games

rough sapphire
#

In my opinion if its the latter, a front end framework is stupid to waste time on.

graceful basin
#

there are not enough board game implementations online

rough sapphire
#

If its the former... you sort of have to

olive schooner
#

latter

#

i mean theres a reason for that

undone berry
#

board game implementations would be cool - especially if you could be bothered to figure out the networking to make it very multiplayer

graceful basin
#

^

olive schooner
#

ya but running good board games online is a tedious task i wouldd say

rough sapphire
#

MapTool and the Suite by RPTools is very hackable and can feasibly support any form of board game you took the time to give it support for, with multi player.

#

tbh i feel if the person can use it its good enough

#

no need to be pretty

#

and nice lookin

#

Its built for Dungeons and Dragons, which.... with effort you can learn to use it without knowing Java and such and learning its macro code system

#

rather rip a template off of someplace

#

But you could feasibly have it work for any board game that exists

#

The community is fairly cool. I try to look at their code base from time to time but... because it can already handle most things you would want to tweak it to do without breaking out the source code, i just dont

#

And Im not good enough at Java yet to feel comforable with how big the code base is anyway

#

but yeah, the most weird board game you could buy from some board game enthusiast shop, you could set up MapTool to run it.

#

IF you really wanted it

undone berry
#

I'm guessing it's not rules enforced

#

which you really want from a board game client

#

and for automatic actions to be automatic

#

(with appropriate prompts and notifications and whatnot)

rough sapphire
#

You can program buttons to automatically calculate things from numerics builds into tokens. Its extremely hackable.

#

By default it makes most sense for D&D players who are not tech savy

#

but if you are, you can do it

#

You can play cards

#

anyway

graceful basin
#

btw, turn based games are great to write in functional languages as state machines

#

tic tac toe is a great beginner elm project for example

undone berry
#

Something like monopoly seems like it would be rubbish in FP - obviously that's a bit of an extreme example, but lots of board games are all about managing what belongs to who

graceful basin
#

well, it is all still state transitions. Though Elm may be a bit too inexpressive for monopoly, purescript with some clever lenses would probably do fine

rough sapphire
#

Man, I feel like I learned the proper separation of coners with HTML, CSS, and JS to make it managable, and now this component thing has got me having to figure it out all over again. I get it to an extent, but Im starting to get the feeling that Im storing values or whatever in the wrong components.

#

Similar to how I used to realize that I was storing things that beloing in a CSS file in my HTML or something likethat

#

I need to do more reading now. After that experiment with the todolist thing, I now have mainly a need for more knowledge of how to organize this to do more.

ye

i feel if they didnt have such weird prices

#

xd

#

like 1.some weird decimal

#

walmart has a system for the last digit tho

#

really?

#

do they truncate or sth

#

sec

#

lemme find the exact system

#

Walmart is very sneaky with its markdown system, so here's a breakdown of how it works so you can actually score the best deal: Prices ending in "7" display the item's original price; prices ending in "5" come after the item's first markdown; and those ending in "1" or "0" signify the final markdown.

For example, if you see a product marked at $49.97, then you know that it's the original price and should wait for markdowns. When the product is marked down for the first time, it will be priced at something like $39.95. Finally, when it's marked down for the last time, it will most likely be sold somewhere around $29.91.

#

🤯

#

no clue why but yea it exists xd

#

apparently by reducing by a couple of cents it makes ppl think the item is cheaper than it is

#

but then u get the issue with having to give ppl change of 5 cents

#

i mean thats usually no big deal

#

but when u dont have any coins

#

we have to round change up

#

does america still use 1 cent

#

or sth

Is posting somewhat big code on Discord considered posting text walls?

#

you should use

#

!paste

royal lakeBOT
#

Pasting large amounts of code

If your code is too long to fit in a codeblock in discord, you can paste your code here:
https://paste.pydis.com/

After pasting your code, save it by clicking the floppy disk icon in the top right, or by typing ctrl + S. After doing that, the URL should change. Copy the URL and post it here so others can see it.

rough sapphire
#

for that

#

No, no, no, no, I'm just asking, IK that paste services exist, but I mean like 500 characters of code, maybe even 1,000?

#

If they're in a code block of course.

#

It depends on the channel. Obviously you can send huge chunks of codes in the help channels, but I wouldn't dump them in #python-discussion

#

So if I post like 800 characters of code in a server that isn't related to programming whatsoever considered posting text walls?

#

If it doesn't serve a higher purpose, I'd say it is

#

Right, then I've been commiting crime until now. ☠️ Thanks

Not saying it's impossible by any means, but it may be easier and more productive in the long run to just explain what the functions/keywords mean

Also there's a button Acquire Wakelock on the Termux's notification bar, according to the site you sent, it should stop Android from killing my Termux process, but it doesn't.

#

@sand goblet

#

I don't understand why mobile phones can't be more controllable without root permissions.

#

I just want to run an app all the time goddammit.

empty aurora
#

I understand your concern with how locked down phones are

#

I guess it's a compromise to make sure the platform is secure. After all, not even 1% of the users are actually interested in doing what root permission allows you to do and it would just make the phones less secure for those people

soft violet
#

I know someone who doesn't even password protect her phone.

#

No passkey, nothing.

round rose
#

I mean, that's not that wild tbh

#

I have a passcode, but the only time my phone isn't in my hands/pockets/etc and someone else can access it is when it's charging at home

#

So it's kind of pointless, really

empty aurora
#

It's useful because you could lose your phone or it might get stolen anytime.
And these days you don't even need a passcode with all the fingerprint and retina scanners

#

Need to enter a passcode, I mean

rough sapphire
#

@empty aurora Huh? You still need to enter your password/pin/pattern upon startup for any modern smartphone

#

Also, retina scanners on smartphones? 🤨

gentle moss
#

hi scott

rough sapphire
#

@gentle moss 👋

#

Google removed Face Unlock on recent iterations of Android, so even that's not a thing.

gentle moss
#

biometrics as an unlock mechanism unsettles me

#

as a 2fa thing i don't mind it so much

rough sapphire
#

I think it's great for convenience

gentle moss
#

yeah, i set it up last week on this surface book

#

because i was fed up of typing my damn password

#

sigh

#

i have become a lazy user

rough sapphire
#

Shouldn't need to put your password in over and over again, when you have biometrics. But to think of it as anything other than convenience is a mistake.

gentle moss
#

exactly. plus this laptop doesn't leave the house

rough sapphire
#

But then again, you can always shut your device down or restart it if you're in a position that you want to force the password to be put in.

gentle moss
#

my work laptop is still a 2fa login

rough sapphire
#

I've had Google Authenticator + Password on this system for a while

gentle moss
#

yeah, fan of that

rough sapphire
#

Well, rather, Password + Google Auth, but yeah

gentle moss
#

except both my phone and work laptop are dying now

rough sapphire
#

Ouch.

#

Backups!

empty aurora
#

@empty aurora Huh? You still need to enter your password/pin/pattern upon startup for any modern smartphone
@rough sapphire Startup, yes. But not to unlock. I restart my phone like once a week, so that doesn't really bother me

rough sapphire
#

@empty aurora I wasn't sure your position, so just wanted to clarify 😄

empty aurora
#

I think Samsung or some company released a phone with retina scanner, didn't they?

#

Iris scanner, I got the word wrong

gentle moss
#

yeah, i mean the data is sound on my laptop

rough sapphire
#

I did not, but I don't play with Samsung devices.
They tend to not be the level of flexibility I need for my devices.
I'll be AFK for about 30-45 minutes.
@gentle moss Did you see the Discord exploit that forced a crash?

empty aurora
#

Not good with biology 🤣

gentle moss
#

hang on, let me send you a video

#

¬_¬

rough sapphire
#

My mom doesn't use a password for her phone so it's quite vulnerable since I can make credit card purchases and whatnot.

rough sapphire
#

@rough sapphire Well, I imagine she doesn't want you to do that.

#

Also, probably isn't in her threat model that anyone would do that outside of the house

#

She should think about what she stores on her phone without protection, I wouldn't use her credit card credentials without her permission, yeah but it's an example.

#

Of what I and someone else could do.

#

I'm not sure it's a good idea to tell someone else what they should/shouldn't do with their devices. You can give your opinion or general take on something, but it's up to them to do that thing.

#

Reasoning with someone and having a discussion is always a nice idea. But trying to force someone into your line of thinking is always bad.

#

It's perfectly fine to have two people disagree with something

#

I mean, seems like she doesn't value her data and personal information, or just doesn't know how to secure it properly, all her email's and whatnot are on that device, kinda scary. ☠️

#

Oh sure, I can see your reasoning.

#

But you have to be careful how you approach those situations

#

Offering a solution is a good way to start that conversation too

#

"Hey, have you looked into x, y, or z to fix {problem}?"

#

Wha-

#

?

#

Also I'll take you in mind, IDK like the phone doesn't store anything about me but I'm still concerned about her data cause if that phone is stolen, yeah all of her account's are compromised.

#

Oh sure, I get that. I've got KeePass on my mobile.

#

So I understand you

#

Backups are always a good idea

#

Since she's your mother, offering to do that for her is always a good idea too

#

That way she doesn't need to think of it
