no one ever cleans them properly
awww
get you a dishwasher
we have one but we mostly handwash the sieves
and I don't mean the machine
on the subject of rice, the worst failure to cook rice i've ever seen was a mate of mine
I mean a little Peruvian boy
we were playing ARMA and he brb'd to put on some rice
or a massive peruvian wrestler
3 hours later someone was like
@high verge I never use that when making rice. I typically just swish the rice and water in the bowl that's part of the rice cooker, then just filter it off using my hand to keep the rice in
"how's your rice doing?"
yeah i do the same with pasta
and we just heard "OH FUCK"
I end up rinsing the rice like 6 times until the water is nearly clear
then lose it all in the sink :(
why would you handwash sieves? So much easier in a dishwasher
@gentle moss HA
some crashing and banging
he filled his entire house with fucking rice smoke
burned it to the pan
there's no point lower in cooking than eating pasta that's fallen into the sink when its full of food
yeah i imagine the pan was pretty ruined
like that ramen mending thing
just use rice
his house stank, landlord was not pleased
In fairness that's mostly the epoxy doing the work
The ramen was just filler
Could have used toilet paper
'would you like some rice landlord?'
i only learned about toilet paper + superglue as a trick to patch stuff together
like last week
Arma is probably one of the few multiplayer games where you could leave to make dinner and no one would notice for a while
i've just been mutilating other plastic items to create a "bridge" between objects
possibly with the exception of club penguin
I HATE that engine
:)
I don't understand how people enjoy playing ARMA
its a special little one
@high verge You can play OpenTTD as multiplayer
It's so clunky
i enjoyed the mods
Like basic movement just HURTS
epoch / dayz
once you get used to it it's pretty fun
and yeah, it feels clunky as fuck but that's what you get for realism
i normally just play around in the mission editor
one thing i will praise it for is "alt look"
?
I remember playing DayZ with some crazy Dutch dude
being able to move the viewport but not the direction of travel or aim
and we played all day on saturday, went to bed
by holding a button
but he was still playing on Sunday
Oh that's helpful yeah
apparently it was actually going to be all alien and future-y
and he just did like a 50 hour gaming session for no reason
but they toned it down
wow
Although I kind of instinctively do that anyway
he just spent like 6 hours fishing I now remember
i think the longest session on arma dayz was probably ~16 hours
get back - and there's just a truck full of fucking fish
haha
It's a Jesus miracle!
Make trucks full of fish?
had to wait for herbs to come back so do some fishing.
end up with more fish than herbs
HA
Fishing was about all I ever did in Runescape
Fishing and burying bones
No idea why
there are certain other games which involve uh
burying bones
i don't tend to play those
hmmm? Could you expand on that?
dinosaur bones?
expand eh?
is it a god simulator?
It's an innuendo
I'm not sure I follow - perhaps you could fill me in?
HEYO
if you had a party for all the people with yellow names here, would you call it a helper function?
i'd like to continue this conversation but i have to shoot
@high verge I mean, I know that I would but I'd get booed out of the room for it
Bisk right now
So when you normally think of a double barrel shotgun, it's a side by side
The two barrels are next to each other
the Dude, okay and Seriously made me worried for a second
An over under is one on top of the other
side by sides have left->right tracking issues
it is a bit of a pain
and right to left
My first time shooting a gun was going with my dad and a friend of his to a trap and skeet range and we borrowed his over-under
Just magic
I don't hunt, I don't carry a gun for protection, but I would LIVE at a trap range
That's so relaxing to me
it's good fun
is trap clay pigeons?
yup
Hunting is the main kind of shooting that appeals to me. I have a friend who's incredibly good with a bow/arrow at targets, but refuses to go hunting - and it makes me sad
trap is launched from a single position
Oh that's right
skeet is multiple positions
Been like 12 years since I went
the most fun i've had with trap was when my dads shop got an electronic clay launcher
that thing could just pop pop pop them out so fast
launch 5 clays and try to hit all with a semi-auto
fun fun fun
So rad
very expensive in shells
Well yes
how much are shells usually?
Did he load his own?
on a £/shell basis?
The site I'm looking at is about $10 for 25 shells
£4.64 for a box of 25 is about as cheap as you get
oh no, gamebore do some at £3.92
you get through 25 pretty quickly
It's why I in general prefer shooting .22lr
we talking about pew pews?
a good shoot is probably about 100 rounds
Yeppers
it's quite an experience
im 13 lol
dang nice
dad runs a gunshop so not a surprise
Theres' this whole thing about gun control and both sides have good points
It's interesting lol
i'm british
You have to treat them with a lot of respect
and both sides do not have good points
one side is awful and the other side is asking for common sense
but something in the middle is best lol
pistol when i was 7
i first shot a shotgun when i was 9
A man when I was 11
yea
hah
and which side is awful
Free guns for everyone
the pro-gun rights side.
That one
Makes sense
simply put, after the UK and Australia banned lots of guns directly after mass shootings
The fact that they fight so heavily against basic background checks is fucked up
mass shootings just stopped
ya
Where as we're on the rise
Would make it easier to build a revolutionary militia
Again
chicago has decent gun laws for their state
the problem is the next door state does not
yea
^^
so people just get them from there.
Missouri
Missurrraahhh
Missssssurrahhh
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE it
I don't remember if you said - but do you own a gun @plucky ridge ?
how often do you come across an admin that is actually a person and talks to people normally
@undone berry I own 2
half the time they ignore you lol *most of the time in other servers
every day.
Both purely for recreational target shooting
I don't even keep ammunition in the house
yea
Target shooting is more of a PITA in the UK
recreational target shooting seems fun lol
Same
pretty much like 22lr without a kick
Yep, but cheaper
Which is crazy considering how cheap 22lr is already
plus you get to build one beefy muscle
that sounds cheap "spring gun"
Eh
spring guns are not cheap ¬_¬
it sounds so cheap lol
The air ones are
The like... Daisy Red Rider ones
probably my mum got rid of it
@undone berry So I guess technically 3 firearms
and a .177 co2 capsule air pistol
eh - I dunno, I wouldn't count air rifles as firearms - but I dunno if they technically count
Eh, I was happy with the pump. Was like... $40ish?
have u guys ever shot a sniper?
not sure how to answer that question
you mean a big bore rifle with a scope?
if so then i guess?
not a 50cal or anything
Oh man, I was at the range one time and this guy let my brother and I shoot a .44 magnum
You shoot and it's just bright white
bet that had some kick too
You know, it did but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be
I think I was just ready for it and bracing properly
They were hand loaded rounds, too
So I think they were slightly hotter than normal
Was an interesting experience, to say the least
can imagine
What are things that come to mind when I say abandoned castle
Like what's inside one
Dust, Spider webs, uhhhhh
Bats
ghosts, chains, crumbling walls, dilapidated furniture, skeletons, dungeons, broken windows
^
Graffiti...
Ooh yes
Beer bottles, other trash left by people
writing is fun
can be
The occasional homeless person
someone put effort to chisel in
lol dang
@plucky ridge you're too grounded in reality
Loll
I embraced getting older with open arms
need to get you out of reality somewhat - I'd reccomend either fantasy books or something more extreme...
more extreme and more rule 5 breaking
I mean I do have a whimsical mind and CAN have all that, but eh
Do not provide or request help on projects that may break laws, breach terms of services, be considered malicious/inappropriate or be for graded coursework/exams.
that?
if your first thought about abandoned castles is beer bottles
o wwo
you need some more whimsy in yer life
^lol
@undone berry It wasn't, though
true
It was bats
it was bats
his first thing was bats
yes
And then you covered the rest
oh no, that's in exeter. nvm
So I had to think on my feet
That wasn't the rest. THere's also crowns, and abandoned piles of gold, and giant spiders, and mounds of cobwebs, and secret chapels, and wells with no bottom, and secret cults
(i'm joking, I'm reaching here - I did steal all of the cool things)
Well sure, there's also doors that lead to a netherworld, ancient stone tablets telling tales of the battles of old, possibly old armor and weapons left broken and abandoned.
does it have to be realistic?
But sometimes you need realism to make the whimsy more fantastic
What's a item
tbh i prefer hemlocks post-modern take on what's in a castle
gimme a item
an item is just a thing - a phone, chair, window etc
ok
crown
what do you think when i say phone
i would've gone with a useless old hag who sponges off tax payer money.
HA
"fuck off and stop ringing"
lmaooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
so we have fantasy, and reality man
I wish someone would set me english homework again
write me a haiku about a fish with two feet
Go read To Kill a Mocking Bird and then write me a 20 page essay on the deeper meanings of the story
the thing about me being set english homework was that I never did it unless I thought it was fun
poetry and TKAM are not fun
i love the fact the sequel to To Kill a Mocking Bird made whatshisface out to be some virtue signaling guy who didn't actually care about the content of the case.
(clearly i dont realy know what im doing)
Aticus Finch I think?
Ooh i read kill mocking bird a fewm onths ago
Something like that?
Atticus Fitch iirc
Ah right, two t's
Go set a watchman?
yeah, the 2nd book, iirc, goes into how he was doing it from prestige or w/e and didn't care about the outcome or trial
Back in the day, his actor had all the girls swooning
i forget because fuck it
it's definitely related
people don't like it though because it spoils the message of the first book
womp womp
womp womp
Ooooo oh oh oh oh oh. https://reasonml.org/docs/reason-compiler/latest/new-bucklescript-syntax Dude, okay, I'm really stoked about these syntax changes. Sorry, it's just in my mind
Didn't it get released when Harper Lee was like 90?
probably a reason for that - she was too sensible to release it any earlier
Hey anyone wanna help me modify a channel
pls
guys
I want to make my channel look better but need some help pls
i mean yeah, it's an iconic piece of literature used as a teaching aid in the US
And it sucks
Eh - I read it without being forced and thought it was alright
Like most books you're forced to read in English
so i watched the movie instead
^ lol
and the movie was okay
@simple sand How do you mean?
whats wrong with english books
so maybe if i finished the book it'd have been better
I HATED Lord of the Flies
It's definitely pretty on the nose and overblown, like 1984 and a lot of other similar books - but enjoyable enough
what
there is a book called lord of the flies
then read better books
Lord of the Flies, A.K.A. what happens when a bunch of entitled middle class children get dumped on an island.
Well yeah of course we read better books now
I know the story of Lord of Flies from just general pop culture - but I could never make it through the book despite the fact I know I'd like the plot
But these were ones that were required reading for school
you know it was written as a kind of response to another authors work Charlie?
yeah
I feel like Lord of The Flies would make a wonderful series
Yes. That's what I meant by the english books bit
some of them are booring
no - I didn't know that
some dude wrote a book about how if some entitled middle class children got stuck on an island it'd be a utopia
doesn't really change my opinion about it
@rough sapphire I don't often call people a psychopath, but....
and what did u mean by @simple sand how do u mean
that makes sense
"lol no"
@plucky ridge I mean, it would be a wonderful series if done right.
I don't think any series focused on kids would work well
I mean....
kids are little shits
Lost was trash though
Lost fucking sucks
huh
Yet better than LotF
hmmmm
sorry, i'm just trying to remember the plot of lost
I'm not super keen on torturing of your fellow man and child killing
and my brain decided to shut down
yeah
well - that doesn't make it bad
@gentle moss that means you remembered it
yeah but we're talking about books
@simple sand go ask in ot0
If it's for Python
or check in the #discord-bots channel if you're doing it with a bot
If not then yeah, OT.
or try another ot channel
point is: not here
LOL
i really need to read a fiction book soon
Point could have been made a bit more softly, gents
@gentle moss But can they host a tournament?
I've seen several tournaments between books
a tournament of what readinng books???
that exists
a book off
like book tournament
Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off
well if the books are real, it's not really an unreal tournament
more of a real tournament about unreal things
whats the point of books reading tournament
because it's Unreal Tournament 99
Was that added retroactively?
i think it was added in the GOTY edition
they took an interesting approach with yearly naming after that though
Ah right right
UT2k3, UT2k4
How can people work 9-5? I've worked for like 2 hours, and spent the rest of the day BSing in here - and I still want to go to bed right now
then UT3
@undone berry Time flies when you have stuff to do or you don't have access to a compy
yeah, pissing about in here is how we get through the 9-5
otherwise i'd just be reading the news or some shit
I have stuff to do though - I just don't want to do it right now
I just don't have a lot on my plate
if it's not something fun or new to do or get invested in it's kinda just meh
what are you auditing?
right now i'm doing an audit of windows patch levels and an audit of a company's powershell versions to see if i need to upgrade them before i can run a script to disable USB media
i'm always auditing windows patch levels
fucking sticky wicket of a problem at the moment
we're at 65 - 70% "fully patched" consistently
and our RMM tool is not being helpful as to tell us why the other ~30% isn't patching in line with the rest
Doesn't help that Microsoft keeps putting out breaking patches
out of band patches aren't so much the issue
moving over from Win7 patching structure to Win10 patching structure is just... urg
you have far less control about when / what something patches
and the RMM tool itself, as admitted by Datto, has problems getting patching information from the Windows API
so that ~30% patching gap could just be a false report
but we have no idea
Good ol' Datto
some parts of the RMM tool i really like, but it's absolute garbage compared to the control and quality of ConnectWise (formerly Labtech)
doing any sort of review or audit of systems is much harder
Labtech would store info about a machine in a database on a server, so you could query practically anything you wanted even if the machine was off
in Datto it has to go and directly communicate with the agent to get information
Probably a really stupid question, but would doing something like a system file check help on those 30% possibly?
which means if Ian from Accounting turned his computer off and is out for the week
he doesn't get caught in the audit
Just to make sure it's not some weird system file conflict keeping things from going through?
systems are fine. there are identical systems but one will patch and one wont
and it's not consistently the same machines, which is a head fuck
I know you can wake on LAN but is there a power on on LAN?
wake on LAN is power on LAN
nah, it'll work from off
Datto's WoL feature leaves a lot to be desired.
it requires you to have a probe/node in the network
which if they've got a server or a dedicated PC for us, is fine
we just make that the node
Would it not be wiser to do a PS script to push the wake signal to all of the systems before doing the RMM stuff?
Or is that not really an option
I'm probably asking dumb stuff, sorry
nah
This is the side I don't get to see much of
perfectly reasonable suggestions
Like all of this for our systems is handled by our contractors
Okay, so just so I'm on the same page, is it program updates that aren't syncing properly or system updates
windows updates
Gotcha
Well I don't know if it helps, but from my experience over the last month there have been lots of updates they've pushed that required me to do a sfc /scannow just to get things working properly again. Or the Windows Update troubleshooter.
No particular reason WHY it seems to be doing it, but thems the breaks
yeah, if it was a consistent problem with certain machines that'd make sense
but it's a roaming issue
Oh no
It's not a consistent per machine thing
I had these things trigger on machines that never had issues previously
yeah but if that was the problem it wouldn't update until you sfc'd, right?
Yes and no
Some apply, some don't
I really don't have an in depth reason or explanation.
and that's not what we're seeing. we're seeing Machine A be in the 30% one month
then be fully patched next month
but all of a sudden Machine B is in the 30%, when last month it was fine
But like you said, it's hard to trust that metric since even the vendor says it's not reliable
yeah, and we're not the only ones complaining
i've got a meeting with one of their RMM technical people sometime next month
Would you be okay with keeping me in the loop with that? We don't use that particular system, but it does have me curious and might shed light on other issues here
got a sticker on the back of my office chair
"patching will continue until security improves"
That's brilliant
I've done something stupid. I forgot to commit my changes and deleted the folder
F
I was creating my own authentication/authorization stuff in my API just to learn how to do it :(
ahh
I'm a lazy f, so I'm gonna learn how to use Firebase instead 👀
lol
They have everything there, authentication, database etc. It's heaven
any good website dev suggestions?
what kind of websites?
i was thinking about making a troll site that just displayed trump tweets
I decided to make the default todo app everyone makes to try out their first frontend framework. I'm adjust to how different it is from what Im used to.
But I didnt really follow a guide exactly, I just looked a project and tried to make it be my own thing by looking at how the components seem to work and looking up the directives, which i still dont get how to do everything i need to do yet.
I want to actually have it able to be a download manager instead of a todo list but i figured that the todo list exercise would work for adding urls to a list.
i dont really like webdev
but it seems tho
its still very relevant
and popular
Yeah, but the thing is that the approach to web dev will probably not always be the same one as there are already a millions things in the tech stack that you can pick from and match together for different things.
i hate doing the front end stuff
like making ur thing look nice and all
Yeah, it's not my favorite thing either but I have some ability to do it. The thing is, I can only do it with CSS really up until now. And very minimal vanilla JS which isnt needed too much for anything.
hmm
But as far as massive front JS development, I dont like a lot of things about it.
any suggestions for some useful sites that i can make?
I mean... So do you want to make a web application or something that serves content? Like, is it a utility, or a blog, forum, image sharing thing?
make some board games
In my opinion if its the latter, a front end framework is stupid to waste time on.
there are not enough board game implementations online
If its the former... you sort of have to
board game implementations would be cool - especially if you could be bothered to figure out the networking to make it very multiplayer
^
ya but running good board games online is a tedious task i wouldd say
MapTool and the Suite by RPTools is very hackable and can feasibly support any form of board game you took the time to give it support for, with multi player.
tbh i feel if the person can use it its good enough
no need to be pretty
and nice lookin
Its built for Dungeons and Dragons, which.... with effort you can learn to use it without knowing Java and such and learning its macro code system
rather rip a template off of someplace
But you could feasibly have it work for any board game that exists
The community is fairly cool. I try to look at their code base from time to time but... because it can already handle most things you would want to tweak it to do without breaking out the source code, i just dont
And Im not good enough at Java yet to feel comforable with how big the code base is anyway
but yeah, the most weird board game you could buy from some board game enthusiast shop, you could set up MapTool to run it.
IF you really wanted it
I'm guessing it's not rules enforced
which you really want from a board game client
and for automatic actions to be automatic
(with appropriate prompts and notifications and whatnot)
You can program buttons to automatically calculate things from numerics builds into tokens. Its extremely hackable.
By default it makes most sense for D&D players who are not tech savy
but if you are, you can do it
You can play cards
anyway
btw, turn based games are great to write in functional languages as state machines
tic tac toe is a great beginner elm project for example
Something like monopoly seems like it would be rubbish in FP - obviously that's a bit of an extreme example, but lots of board games are all about managing what belongs to who
well, it is all still state transitions. Though Elm may be a bit too inexpressive for monopoly, purescript with some clever lenses would probably do fine
Man, I feel like I learned the proper separation of coners with HTML, CSS, and JS to make it managable, and now this component thing has got me having to figure it out all over again. I get it to an extent, but Im starting to get the feeling that Im storing values or whatever in the wrong components.
Similar to how I used to realize that I was storing things that beloing in a CSS file in my HTML or something likethat
I need to do more reading now. After that experiment with the todolist thing, I now have mainly a need for more knowledge of how to organize this to do more.
In [213]: a = np.array([0], dtype=object)
In [214]: a[0] = a
In [215]: a
Out[215]: array([array(..., dtype=object)], dtype=object)
```numpy is smart
@wanton dagger Wrong user? 😄
bruh
i made my first uber eats delivery today ^.^
how was it?
hows the pay
2 trips, got $12. i use my bike, so no gas costs :') i would have done more but my phone decided to die ):
quick phresh cash
yea
and uber lets you cash out immedately straight to a debit card
so much quick
that's nice
chicago traffic was a nightmare - i was downtown, cuz, well more people, and y e a a a
some of those streets are not very bike friendly
cars go honk
and a bus
but the streets r flat tho right
ye
so there isnt crazy hills
haha pedestrian go splat
i go n y o o m
i can keep up 12-15mph on a bike so that helps
well 12-15 on this particular bike
i can keep 17 on bikes that are geared higher , i.e. a 3x9
i wonder if they make generators that you put on a bike 🤔
oh like those motors
haha pedestrian go splat
@round rose r u d e
yea but backwards
that bike for u
i dont need the bike to move for me
i have legs smh
lol
just something to make a bit of power to charge my phone :')
but i think those motors lets u go faster
eh i like biking cuz effort
maybe solder sth sketchy together
like a magnet and a coil of wire
xD
it's a nice addition to working at walmart tho
walmart kinda bleh
is it cuz the ppl dont wear masks
they cant get in without one :')
but we're just so shortstaffed
everyone is strained, especially the front end
i'm a cashier by title, but i run self-checkout and get carts when needed
cool
yea
its kinda like musical chairs some days tho
i dont have job lol
oofs
yeah
big oof
just
uh
demand one
lol
Just go into wherever you want to work and demand one
- @rough sapphire probably
i used to have a part time doing stats entry
xd
o
but the sports season ended
heck
make a new sport >:)
lol
since it's your sport, you do what you want
job security: 100
lololol
:')
wonder when the coin shortage is gonna end
there is a shortage of coins?
yea
cuz corona
i rarely use coins tho
cuz i find its a hassle to carry around
people couldnt change their coins to bills at banks cuz they were closed
mints were closed
people dont carry coins, so the store loses coins and gains bills
i had to give someone $1 cuz my drawer didnt have coins for 30c change :')
oof
ye
i feel if they didnt have such weird prices
xd
like 1.some weird decimal
walmart has a system for the last digit tho
really?
do they truncate or sth
sec
lemme find the exact system
Walmart is very sneaky with its markdown system, so here's a breakdown of how it works so you can actually score the best deal: Prices ending in "7" display the item's original price; prices ending in "5" come after the item's first markdown; and those ending in "1" or "0" signify the final markdown.
For example, if you see a product marked at $49.97, then you know that it's the original price and should wait for markdowns. When the product is marked down for the first time, it will be priced at something like $39.95. Finally, when it's marked down for the last time, it will most likely be sold somewhere around $29.91.
🤯
no clue why but yea it exists xd
apparently by reducing by a couple of cents it makes ppl think the item is cheaper than it is
but then u get the issue with having to give ppl change of 5 cents
i mean thats usually no big deal
but when u dont have any coins
we have to round change up
does america still use 1 cent
or sth
ye
Is posting somewhat big code on Discord considered posting text walls?
you should use
!paste
Pasting large amounts of code
If your code is too long to fit in a codeblock in discord, you can paste your code here:
https://paste.pydis.com/
After pasting your code, save it by clicking the floppy disk icon in the top right, or by typing ctrl + S. After doing that, the URL should change. Copy the URL and post it here so others can see it.
for that
No, no, no, no, I'm just asking, IK that paste services exist, but I mean like 500 characters of code, maybe even 1,000?
If they're in a code block of course.
It depends on the channel. Obviously you can send huge chunks of codes in the help channels, but I wouldn't dump them in #python-discussion
So if I post like 800 characters of code in a server that isn't related to programming whatsoever considered posting text walls?
If it doesn't serve a higher purpose, I'd say it is
Right, then I've been commiting crime until now. ☠️ Thanks
🚔
heeeyyyyooooo
etiquette bisk coming in here to drop some general best practices on what not to do
listens patiently
@rough sapphire, if it takes up more than half a screen in a standard 16:9 format, use a pastebin
it makes the threads of a conversation, even a help discussion, more easy to maintain track of.
line count is far more important than character count
because then you might just be pushing other stuff off the screen and people haaaate scrolling.
class dismissed. o/
Etiquette Bisk is definitely an indie band
F
so you type !e followed by three `
then python
then use enter to create a new line
then type your codes then close the code block with three `
like
!e python print("1")
You are not allowed to use that command here. Please use the #bot-commands channel instead.
no wait like how does it work?
does it create a new file and return the value from there?
the code is passed to a freshly created container and the output is passed back to the bot
then the container is destroyed
Nah, there's no container dance
There's just another container with nsjail and a daemon
hmm
is there a way to break the exec() if its in a loop?
yea i was thinking that
but rn i wanna replicate the eval function of the bot for my server
well the code is openly available on the github repo iirc
ooh ill go check that out thanks
!source snekbox
Bad argument: Please double-check your input arguments and try again.
!source [source_item]
Can also use: src
Display information and a GitHub link to the source code of a command, tag, or cog.
!source eval
oh cool
Is anyone in Buffalo?
Because
Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo
stop spamming your message in all ot-channels @dry basin
No need to post that in every ot channel though lol
._.
How can I get out of this caveman sleeping routine?
I basically sleep 3 hours a night
I have tried to not going to sleep until certain time (Basically not sleeping for 28 hours)
I always sleep until 12:00 am and shit
I feel like getting exhausted during the day helps more than just going a long time without sleeping
You could try moving more during the day, long walks, maybe bike rides or jogging, all that kind of stuff
I am tired asf, but when I go to sleep I just get spammed by pictures by my mind
I don't know if you understand
try listening to some sort of breathing exercise or meditation thing before bed
can help quiet your thoughts
takes a while to get used to it, but i've found it helps get me to sleep
limiting screen time a couple hours before going to sleep should also help
yeah, read paper books or something
the light from screens can throw off sleep
but if it's racing thoughts and stuff, i definitely recommend looking up a breathing meditation or something
that's one i used to use when i started doing it
Good tip I have tried meditation like 3 times in my life. First time it worked and last 2 it didn't. I have no idea why
Books are good, beacuse you don't need a screen to be able to use them
I have tried melatonin but it feels like not sleeping
But anything over 5mg is worthless, since your body can only absorb the 5
You have to get used to it
I feel like I don't want to get used to it
if you make a habit of sleeping to read, you might feel sleepy when you read a book at other situations too
happened to me
now i dont read
Reading in the morning used to be my thing. Not anymore, because I basically ruined my routine
When I was young I freaked out if I didn't go to sleep certain time. Ohh I miss those times
can someone help me with this book cipher, i think i did it wrong
Can anyone help me write algorithm for this: How much times I have to put x to get equal or bigger with/than y?
abs(y/x)?
not abs
ceil()
ceil(y/x)
does that work @coarse hearth, or am I misunderstanding?
I'm testing
This is product calculation, so products in stock can be negative. Then I have input how much supplier give at once (so when this is 2, you can only order 2, 4, 6, 8 etc. products), minimum amount in stock and maximum amount in stock. I have to calculate how much I have to order.
Minimum amount should be at least always in stock, but not more than maximum stock.
I have been working with this program whole day. Everything else is ready, but this calculation side, this is complex.
This is calculating products ordering sheet
cool cool
I regret everything
Why is Google photos getting stuck on preparing the upload
I'm at this for like an hour or two
EVERY freakin' answer in the answer hub gives you a different solution
have you tried turning it off and on again?
I hope this will catch someone's eye who will be interested in this hypothetical discussion.
Theoretically, would it be possible to define aliases for all built-in Python functions and implement it in a non-English language simply using those aliases? I understand all error messages and everything would still be in English, but just the commands
I don't see why not... would be a lot of work though
Say if I want to create a simpler version, only for learning purposes of children whose native language is not English. What would it entail?
Changing a lot of function names, keywords, and any instances within there of
Honestly, it would only benefit them for a short time, as pretty much ALL languages require some English knowledge (or at least the ability to look up what the commands mean to comprehend them). Not saying it's impossible by any means, but it may be easier and more productive in the long run to just explain what the functions/keywords mean
that's true of course. it's probably just good for getting started and within a couple of months, English familiarity will be required
I'm pretty sure there are translations of python to other languages
for keywords and for builtins
It's just harder for kids whose language is not written using latin alphabet
maybe they're meant just for learning, I'm not sure
You'd have to fork the compiler in order to rename the tokens though
Ah, hadn't thought of that
That's something that is on my to do list, I really want to see the madness of python scripts written in french haha
Oh god
French is just English with an occasional le and a funny accent right?
wow, so learning english is kind of a requirement for programming
oui
Partially yeah
Baguette incoming in 3, 2...
🥖
I think there are a couple programming languages here and there that are in other languages, but they're few and far between because the majority of languages out there are in english
viva le revolucion
Close :)
Liberte, fraternete, cup of tea
lol
to make it worse, I didn't even get them in the right order
The funniest thing is that python by default supports Unicode tokens, and so words with accents
Tea, how dare you :>
and i thought it's Americans who don't like tea
I think they are more country in the world that drink coffee than country that drink tea
no wonder
imagine disliking something so much that you dump it in the ocean
nvm, there are somethings I would like to dump int he ocean
i was trying to decipher that one...
My original thought was like "restoring the oceans"
But my hands were like "nah, too much work"
I'm hoping if I keep going over the Reason docs something will click in me like it did with Python where I finally start doing stuff with it
I have no retort, that was too perfect
In fairness, I think actually doing is probably the most important thing - it was for me at least. Using enumerate and stuff seemed scary till I actually just did it
True. Just keep bumping against how imposing it is to deal with DOM stuff
I think I lack the confidence to believe that I've learned something myself til I see it actually working
I'm right there with you
Yeah I figured
"sleepin' with da fishes"
Huh, now that's interesting.... https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0622/
Guido shot down one of the previous switch case PEPs but is an author on this one for pattern matching
is that to determine type?
Does anyone know how to make Android background apps run without them getting knocked out by Android? I have a Termux app which I use for running my Discord bot(s) and I was wondering how I could run Termux in the background without Android being Android, and most importantly... Can it be done?
Not sure if this fits in off-topic... But I'll allow it because of how intrigued I am by this idea
Don't think it would fit in #tools-and-devops, #discord-bots or #python-discussion.
Do you use the option to not optimize battery usage for the said app?
Yeah you can't just write your app so Android doesn't do that
It's down to the user
Oh, I thought Ralph was asking as the user of the app 😅
In that case, I guess persistent notification is what it needs
Oh right, yeah, termux is probably not their app haha
Site is still helpful though
Although an Android phone isn't really a great server
Maybe get a raspberry pi or something
Can anyone type with chopsticks?
XD
I imagine it's hard
But I also imagine someone can
Difficulty didn't stop people mastering something
My pc aint working its only showing lock screen..
Help
I cant exit lock screen
Yeah, erm I'm currently in a situation where I really don't have direct access to a computer, so I do some bot development on a tablet that I use every day so I want to keep Termux running in the background.
@empty aurora Yeah I've disabled that but it still kills the process.
Also there's a button Acquire Wakelock on the Termux's notification bar, according to the site you sent, it should stop Android from killing my Termux process, but it doesn't.
@sand goblet
I don't understand why mobile phones can't be more controllable without root permissions.
I just want to run an app all the time goddammit.
I understand your concern with how locked down phones are
I guess it's a compromise to make sure the platform is secure. After all, not even 1% of the users are actually interested in doing what root permission allows you to do and it would just make the phones less secure for those people
I mean, that's not that wild tbh
I have a passcode, but the only time my phone isn't in my hands/pockets/etc and someone else can access it is when it's charging at home
So it's kind of pointless, really
It's useful because you could lose your phone or it might get stolen anytime.
And these days you don't even need a passcode with all the fingerprint and retina scanners
Need to enter a passcode, I mean
@empty aurora Huh? You still need to enter your password/pin/pattern upon startup for any modern smartphone
Also, retina scanners on smartphones? 🤨
hi scott
@gentle moss 👋
Google removed Face Unlock on recent iterations of Android, so even that's not a thing.
biometrics as an unlock mechanism unsettles me
as a 2fa thing i don't mind it so much
I think it's great for convenience
yeah, i set it up last week on this surface book
because i was fed up of typing my damn password
sigh
i have become a lazy user
Shouldn't need to put your password in over and over again, when you have biometrics. But to think of it as anything other than convenience is a mistake.
exactly. plus this laptop doesn't leave the house
But then again, you can always shut your device down or restart it if you're in a position that you want to force the password to be put in.
my work laptop is still a 2fa login
I've had Google Authenticator + Password on this system for a while
yeah, fan of that
Well, rather, Password + Google Auth, but yeah
except both my phone and work laptop are dying now
@empty aurora Huh? You still need to enter your password/pin/pattern upon startup for any modern smartphone
@rough sapphire Startup, yes. But not to unlock. I restart my phone like once a week, so that doesn't really bother me
@empty aurora I wasn't sure your position, so just wanted to clarify 😄
I think Samsung or some company released a phone with retina scanner, didn't they?
Iris scanner, I got the word wrong
yeah, i mean the data is sound on my laptop
I did not, but I don't play with Samsung devices.
They tend to not be the level of flexibility I need for my devices.
I'll be AFK for about 30-45 minutes.
@gentle moss Did you see the Discord exploit that forced a crash?
Not good with biology 🤣
My mom doesn't use a password for her phone so it's quite vulnerable since I can make credit card purchases and whatnot.
@rough sapphire Well, I imagine she doesn't want you to do that.
Also, probably isn't in her threat model that anyone would do that outside of the house
She should think about what she stores on her phone without protection, I wouldn't use her credit card credentials without her permission, yeah but it's an example.
Of what I and someone else could do.
I'm not sure it's a good idea to tell someone else what they should/shouldn't do with their devices. You can give your opinion or general take on something, but it's up to them to do that thing.
Reasoning with someone and having a discussion is always a nice idea. But trying to force someone into your line of thinking is always bad.
It's perfectly fine to have two people disagree with something
I mean, seems like she doesn't value her data and personal information, or just doesn't know how to secure it properly, all her email's and whatnot are on that device, kinda scary. ☠️
Oh sure, I can see your reasoning.
But you have to be careful how you approach those situations
Offering a solution is a good way to start that conversation too
"Hey, have you looked into x, y, or z to fix {problem}?"
Wha-
?
Also I'll take you in mind, IDK like the phone doesn't store anything about me but I'm still concerned about her data cause if that phone is stolen, yeah all of her account's are compromised.
Oh sure, I get that. I've got KeePass on my mobile.
So I understand you
Backups are always a good idea
Since she's your mother, offering to do that for her is always a good idea too
That way she doesn't need to think of it
