I actually predicted duolingo would crash once they admitted to creating AI lessons, and because linguistics research I was familiar with always pushed comprehensible input not artificial learning materials

But I didn't trust myself enough to gamble on it

I don't think duolingo really had the moat facilitated by network effect or vendor lock-in the investors thought they had

their original business model was pretty interesting, they were going to do captcha style mass translations once you hit a certain metric indicating your competency based off known material

This is also why AI as an industry is pretty strange, I don't think there will be that moat at the end to facilitate exploitative behavior towards consumers or business partners even if we amortize between the major competing firms

If I were China I'd release those models for free to facilitate building a coalition against US hegemony which seems to be what they're doing rn

Also maybe some open source devs just make it with interpreter/compiler integration and static code analysis which is what the top models rn are
