#

Okay and

#

I fail to see where that disarms my point
It kinda just doesn't stand

pulsar heart
#

I never said europe didnt lean on it to harvest that sweet peace dividend

terse harbor
#

And this is hardly true btw

minor ferry
terse harbor
#

They actively encouraged rearmament during the cold war

minor ferry
#

is there a moral center in europe now

terse harbor
#

Unless you refer to weapons research and development

#

Which isn't true either, actually

minor ferry
pulsar heart
#

ANYWAY

terse harbor
#

I can too post quotes

pulsar heart
#

its true that there were complains since forever

terse harbor
#

It does not really make it true

pulsar heart
#

but what the americans say and what they do

#

it tends to be diff things

#

the shift happened at the obama admin

#

before that the US was happy with a neutered europe

#

even if they didnt like to pay for it

terse harbor
#

That is not true

pulsar heart
#

bam

#

I won

#

can u at least google it

terse harbor
#

I did

pulsar heart
#

u did ?

terse harbor
#

This debate is literally older than Obama

pulsar heart
#

I already explained, there were complains

terse harbor
#

And at least four American presidents have told Europe to pick their spending up

pulsar heart
#

but did anyone do anything ?

#

nah

#

they're doing now

terse harbor
#

?

#

2006 Riga Summit

#

It was under Bush that the target spending was set to 2%

#

Also, "neutering" Europe imples that it was against their will
It wasn't, Europe itself wanted to disarm after the cold war

pulsar heart
terse harbor
#

That's Europe's fault ¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

America didn't suppress anything, the Europeans actively chose it

pulsar heart
#

this is not a serious discussion

minor ferry
terse harbor
#

Astounding argument

minor ferry
#

had to pull this one out

pulsar heart
#

pls go study history b4 engaging with me

minor ferry
#

ai baby take over

pulsar heart
#

i assume youre probly an american too

minor ferry
#

anyway

terse harbor
#

"Study history"

pulsar heart
#

ANYWAY

terse harbor
#

At least bring sources to what you're saying, then

#

This is amusing

minor ferry
pulsar heart
#

bro im not gonna teach discord randos on the basics of 20th century history

#

go listen to a kotkins pdocast or wtv

#

and leave me be in my ignorance

terse harbor
#

20th century history is when America does not force countries to spend their money

#

🤓

pulsar heart
#

how about u focus on the incomong iran war

terse harbor
#

I don't even like America

pulsar heart
#

i got stuff to do

terse harbor
#

I just find this greatly amusing because it was Europe's choice

minor ferry
#

The boys up front will take care of it.

terse harbor
#

To do everything you're saying

pulsar heart
terse harbor
#

Ignorant is when you disagree with me

pulsar heart
#

yes, you diaagree with the basic facts, you have not taken the time to learn about them

minor ferry
#

let's take it one step at a time

terse harbor
#

What basic facts

minor ferry
#

can "europe" become Energy independent?

#

can you guys go back to nuclear power

terse harbor
pulsar heart
#

I am not interested in discussing this, I will not argue about this the same way I will not argue about newtonian law

minor ferry
#

for the sole reason, if your buying russiAN oil then sending money to ukraine, you are funding both sides of the war

pulsar heart
#

you gotta know about it first

#

before you get to disagree

terse harbor
#

You have to share my view to argue with me

#

🤓

pulsar heart
#

it is not my view, it is a main stream historical take

terse harbor
#

It is objectively not

pulsar heart
#

I already said, I am not interested in discussing this

terse harbor
#

So much so that you haven't even made a move to disprove me

#

You're only saying that I'm ignorant

minor ferry
#

It's scope creep, Mainstream afghanistan takes are not global takes

pulsar heart
#

I will not discuss the color of the sky

terse harbor
#

What is the color of the sky then

pulsar heart
#

aight I had to block that dude cuz they troling

terse harbor
#

This is hilarious

#

Because I genuinely don’t know what “basic facts” you’re referring to

#

You haven't made them clear at no point throughout this convo

pulsar heart
terse harbor
#

pulsar heart

minor ferry
pulsar heart
minor ferry
#

if this quote is recent, does this insinuate Europe at some level is still afraid of the germans?

minor ferry
pulsar heart
#

post WWII the US got to write the entire global order

#

can we please agree that this was exactly.the case ?

minor ferry
#

oh it very old

terse harbor
#

People resent the fact that while the United States followed a policy of German disarmament and of friendship with Russia after the war, it now advocates rearmament. They could just as easily argue that it was for cooperation with the Soviet Union and to change its policy.
~ Hanz Guderian, 1950

minor ferry
#

explain me like am 5 if the Us got to write the entire Global order, what was the cold war then, why did the soviet union reject the marshall plain, what exactly is a warsaw pact.

pulsar heart
#

1st Secretary General of NATO

#

speaking about the purpose of NATO

minor ferry
pulsar heart
#

im not gonna do that cuz Im not an LLM that produces textbooks

#

pls go learn it

#

im not tryna throw shade

#

im saying those r valid questions

minor ferry
#

this sounds like alternative history where do we go to learn your history

pulsar heart
#

but they r basic stuff u learn of u look for it

pulsar heart
#

kotkins, sarah paine

#

etcs

warped sentinel
pulsar heart
#

yea its very rare we agree on anything lmao

#

but I actually mostly listen to US historians

#

tho they tend to be institutionalists and very EU friendly

minor ferry
#

I actually just want to see where goes I am no longer interesting in pushing back anything

warped sentinel
terse harbor
#

So much so that West Germany became the largest conventional force in the entirety of NATO for a solid while

#

While the Americans did absolutely push American weapons towards Europe (and still do), they haven't really stopped them from developing their own solutions
Rheinmetall, Dassault, BAE, and a whole lot of European companies were born and thrived

#

The best 4.5++ generation aircraft is European, if that tells you something

#

I get why they say that,
But it's just wrong

minor ferry
#

at least they are doing okay,

#

but seriously can They develop Energy independence and go back to nuke power

pulsar heart
#

yawn

terse harbor
#

Probably

#

The French are trying, which, good for them

#

But the Germans have been walking backwards for some reason

minor ferry
#

The greta Tune berg or however you spell it was threat to national security

terse harbor
#

A tragedy

warped sentinel
terse harbor
#

My goat missed

terse harbor
#

The only time I can think of it being like, the case, was the Japanese Mitsubishi F-2
And that's a stretch

pulsar heart
#

these are dutch figures

#

gotta say something positive about NL for once

#

I think portugal ran on 100% renewables at some point, for like a week or more

warped sentinel
minor ferry
#

must of been a good week

pulsar heart
#

after this, the issue will be green washing

pulsar heart
#

cuz for ex making a phone incurs emissions elsewhere in the global supply chain

#

idk how they will solve that tho

minor ferry
terse harbor
#

If we were to crucify America, the perfect case would be the F-2

warped sentinel
terse harbor
#

Because they did not want Japan to become an aerospace competitor

#

Still don't, BTW

#

But through a lot of arguing, haggling, and negotiating, they eventually reached an agreement

#

If they did however not want them to develop said jet, they wouldn't, period
The French wouldn't have built the Rafale, the Swedish wouldn't have built the Gripen

#

So yeah.

#

Sketchy behavior, but not exactly suppressing if we're being entirely fair.

pulsar heart
# pulsar heart

I actually had a position that I exited sometime before that last peak, forgot to buy the dip tho

I think energy in general has been doing well cuz of the data center buildout

#

it also connects back to silver, it's a critical component in solar panels

solar is currently dominating the transition if I recall correctly

#

vague skiff
#

This is why~~ we need batman~~ i agree with vigilante justice

pulsar heart

#

the movies are dope tho

vague skiff

It's because not enough criminals are given justice i think

pulsar heart
#

it's like that everywhere

vague skiff
#

News make every bad thing seem exclusive to the US

pulsar heart
#

indeed, every country has issues

#

NL currently has 100k people removed from the working force because their mental health system is broken

#

that's literally more ppl than their armed forces

#

it's the level of casualties you'd expect from a small war

#

the current gov plans to cut funding to healthcare

#

🤷

#

they could just stop being dumb and have a public/private sector split like how we have it everywhere else

#

and indeed the system of managed market competition between insurances is under threat, when this finally blows up at least

vague skiff
#

What is NL?

pulsar heart
#

the netherlands

#

I dont think any public dutch institution will do anything. this will end when the private business sector decides that this is affecting their margins and start lobbying and/or straight up threathening the gov

#

thats actually why the 30 ruling is even still a thing, companies like ASML threathn to leave when they start planning drastic cuts

#

they gotta nerf it tho, its way too OP

enormous potential due to that population pyramid

on track to become one of the leading super powers by the end of the century or so

lots and lots and lots of issues, but lots of bright people come out of that place. the person who wrote their constitution is one of the few ppl I actually look up to

#

I dont invest in it tho, I dont want the risk premium associated with their corp gov issues

pulsar heart
pulsar heart
#

this like, a telegram bot that uses a simple mathematical model to create daily trading signals for me

I have not opened a laptop in the last 2 or 3 weeks

I quickly jotted down the math, iterated for a bit, then told the AI to write the code

#

it's 100% my engineering

#

but I wrote 0 code

#

we are all grieving the death of an aspect of our craft that we loved

#

most ppl r just still yet in the denial phase

#

imo

#

i could be wrong about this one

pulsar heart

cuz I didnt really vibe code it

wooden silo
pulsar heart

Or even if it does work, writing down a sufficiently detailed spec that the code generation approach works might be more work than writing the code in the end.

pulsar heart

I truly believe you are wrong. But, you may not be. Only time will tell

#

I hope you understand that if you are wrong you will fall behind and eventually have to adapt

wooden silo

You're free to believe that, but I'm more interested in discussing concrete points rather than our respective feelings about it.

I see your perspective as idealistic and emotional, I am a pragmatic person interested in results above all else

I know what I see

#

wooden silo
#

Ok? Still doesn't change the fact that applying AI to my daily coding tasks just doesn't work.

#

I've tried it, it produces no useful results most of the time.

I think I'm quite adept at using it.

pulsar heart
wooden silo
#

Rather than unfalsifiable claims like "if only you knew how to use it, you'd see"

pulsar heart
#

I think discussing it is not that productive given our viewpoints and experience w/ using this tech

#

in 5 to 10 year time or wtv it will be, we will either be manually cleaning trash, or we will all be using AI to write code for us

wooden silo
#

I'm most inclined to believe that things will not have changed that much from today. I think LLMs will continue to be useful as a tool, automating boilerplate tasks and make information retrieval and production faster and easier.

pulsar heart
#

I reapect your opinion and believe it to be a valid viewpoint. I just don't find that outcome as likely as mine

Or maybe you're brainwashed by "gaming laptops" which are not mobile anymore but look like tanks?

I got my first laptop in... 2009 I think. It's an Asus, they were known back then to be quite reliable. Like, my older sib had a similar model (just different insides) and it worked for years. I used mine until... 2017?
It still wouldn't survive long being grabbed by the screen, being dropped, etc.
I could grab it from my closet and it will still work. (I actually planned to resurrect it as edu games laptop for a kid in the family, but a family member found a netbook perfect for that use).

# thick osprey *looks at his 25 year old laptop, 16 year old laptop, and 8 year old laptop all ...

My childhood home had computer with fucking Windows ME running until like... 2012 or longer. Some graphics drivers eventually got fucked up. And then? The same computer got some lightweight buntu flavour (kubuntu or xubuntu? idk which at the time was considered lightest for old devices).
Another computer in that home has dual boot XP and Aurox Linux (Polish Linux distro from early 2000s)

If I didn't need to upgrade my laptop (the aforementioned one I got in 2009), I'd still be using it. But being in CS programme at uni, it was becoming harder and harder to use 32bit 3GB RAM laptop because some software we had to use didn't want to work properly...
My current laptop i got in ~2017 still is my main laptop.

I feel like my work laptops are the sign that not all is made as it was. I burn through them in about two years. They still run, but they turn sluggish and unresponsive during high load work. Haven't had one burn out on me yet. Thankfully.

#

I suspect a lot of their issue is infosec policy bloat. But I just ask for a new one and, if I'm lucky, I get to unbox a new model for the given year.

When I got my newer laptop, better spec laptop was already the "gaming laptop" category. (The old Asus I mentioned had quite big specs for its time - like the 3GB ram, but was normal laptop)
Thankfully not the biggest that completely loose the purpose of being a laptop (portability), but still annoying enough.

UK is a european country

For work you need a visa

For study you just need a rich family

probly good to finish your studies and get a degree

a BSc is like 3 years

#

ya thats complicatwd

tardy rain
#

Maybe 5 if you're doing it part time

pulsar heart
#

but you have to understand its not gonna be easy either way

#

like, to get hired without a degree you need to be good

#

and to be good you have to put in as much time as you would for a degree

#

could be a way, get exposure to tech, climb your way up

#

ya makes sense

tardy rain
#

There are part time degrees

pulsar heart
#

it's possible, many ppl do it

low chasm
#

it's like a hotel room

so it's not like your bed is right next to the stove

well, i guess it depends on the studio

pulsar heart

tardy rain

low chasm
#

it's like, there's no bedroom

pulsar heart
low chasm
#

mm, my friend's studio is like, when you open the door, immediately on your left there's the kitchen, bathroom to the right, and a small corridor at the end of which it opens up into a bigger room with his bed, desk, etc.

#

no separate bedroom or anything, it's like one big room.

#

i mean it's not like every hotel here has a kitchen and everything either

pulsar heart
#

some hotels are like that but I think most dont have the kitchen thing

tardy rain
