It's not normal to need to remove the cd drive to open the back. Slide the CD drive back in before removing the back. Then remove the back case and examine whether you got all screws, disconnected the ribbon cable, etc

harsh tundra
# harsh tundra For Christmas my MIL got a new phone and I was supposed to help set it up, but I...

Back to the story: somehow WhatsApp has been taking 19GB of storage, so I couldn't migrate it easily... 😵‍💫

Inside WA I could delete "big files" and that was 10GB

But I can't easily delete old images.
Thankfully I could connect to pc and after I found the location, I could filter images by year (by name prefix). From 2021.
I'm currently in the middle of deleting 2024 and it's taking 4.5GB now

#

(The folder that contained images had over 15k items. It's 4.5k now)

#

I also cleaned ~6GB off MIL's Google Photos. She has auto backup on her phone for photos on, so around once a year I dump the oldest ones to laptop

vale raven
harsh tundra
#

When clearing the "big files", I was also shocked by the amount of AI slop and TikToks that old people send to each other 😵‍💫

harsh tundra
vale raven
#

I have uhh.... a bit

harsh tundra
#

That's my phone stats. I should clean my photos instead of MIL's, lol.

#

And my Google Drive stats. It's all free storage, the 4GB extension was various promos (I've had this email for over a decade)

vale raven
#

I'm the weirdo that actually likes "the cloud"

#

Google Photos just works

harsh tundra
#

We do have raid set up on the pc for one big storage

minor ferry
harsh tundra
#

Okay, I'm almost done with MIL's WhatsApp.
Kept images from 2025-10 onwards... But also found folders with "WhatsApp animated gifs" and sub folders called "Private" and "Sent" and they're also full of lots of small files. 😵‍💫

It now takes only 1.4GB
Sounds like something I'll be able to migrate

#

I knew someone much less tech savy

they had abunch of crypto scam Images saved in their cloud storage

vale raven
#

Oh yeah
They're totally listening to you

@west granite

ripe birch
# worldly ice may be natural for you, but spamming to other people

well, you gain some, you lose some
cannot have everything at once :p

(keep in mind that my preferred mode of communication is voice/call not text)

pros of short rapid-fire texts:

  • if you were chatting 1 on 1, then instead of having to wait 2 minutes just staring at "your friend is typing...", you can receive a short piece of text and while you finish reading that one, you get another one so you read that, it is more natural—almost like an in person conversation
  • it is easier to reply to: in a long message, you have to quote the specific part of the message you are replying to, however you dont have to do that with chunks, or at least it makes it easier
  • i dont wanna sound pretentious but it is kinda dyslexic/reading friendly—not everyone can read like a pro yk, some have conditions or maybe aren't native so reading smaller parts help them understand things better

cons:

  • appears to be spammy
and one pseudo-con: maybe dings a new notification everytime u receive the message
but this is pseudo because you can just mute notifications

for me, the pros >> cons BUT ofc, this "preference" does not apply everywhere
i dont open github issues or create email threads writing in chunks—that would be stupid innit
DO NOT type like that on places where you'll hit send and disappear for a few hours
but it could be really helpful at places where you expect instant replies

btw, this is also a generational thing, younger people (less than 24 y/o) tends to type short rapid-fire texts more and that's why this typing style is getting more and more popular
idk about studies but i did read a news post about this once where the news asked some people which style they prefer and why and a psychologist to why that might be the case and it aint interesting so wont link it here

#

they said the same thing really, generational phenomenon, and that women tends to type more verbose than men

#

blah blah

wooden silo
#

And analogously, older people tend to read more than younger people

ripe birch
ripe birch
#

like maybe of 1% that women type longer

wooden silo
#

I'm pretty sure it's a well-observed phenomenon in western societies

ripe birch
#

possibly, most of my friends are indian sooooo thats that

wooden silo
#

It's true in the EU, but apparently younger people actually read more than older people: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20240809-2

In 2022, according to EU statistics on income and living conditions (EU-SILC), 52.8% of the EU population aged 16 years or over reported reading books in the past 12 months. The youngest group, aged 16-29, read more (60.1%) compared with those aged 30 to 54 (53.5%), 55 to 64 (52.6%) and 65 years and older (47.2%). More women in the EU read book...

ripe birch
#

interesting, lemme read the finer details

wooden silo
#

Women read for pleasure more than men, though the gap varies by age

#

The difference is lower in younger cohorts

ripe birch
#

kinda hard to believe because i recently texted all my friends to suggest me a book (if they read) and all the girls suggested me like 3-10

#

some even asked me so many questions before suggesting :p

#

almost like an interrogation

#

whereas the guys were like "ive only read cats vs robots in the last 2 years"

#

Okay, outside of legendary figures and pseudonym, there are two real humans listed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_(name)

Atlas is a primarily male name, usually given in reference to the character from Greek mythology. It has increased in usage in recent years for both boys and girls in the United States along with other mythological names, but is still more used for boys. The name has also increased in usage for boys in the United Kingdom and Turkey. It is also ...

I do not usually ask for help, and writing this honestly feels uncomfortable. I am trying to save up for an RTX 4070 Super. For me, this is not just about a graphics card. It is about having something that lets me enjoy my time, escape stress, and hold onto a hobby that genuinely makes hard days easier.

Right now, money is tight. No matter how much I try to save, unexpected expenses keep coming up and pushing this goal further away. It is discouraging to keep watching something you care about feel permanently out of reach.

Any support at all, even just sharing this, would mean more to me than I can properly explain. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for helping me get a little closer to something that would truly make me happy.

If you want it shorter, more dramatic, or slightly ironic sad, I can tune it exactly how you want.

Some people change their names as adults. And there's a reimagining of Persephone - there is not much info left on some marriage traditions, but apparently in some regions sharing a fruit might've been like a proposal, and the "kidnapping of the bride" is also present in some other cultures (and we do know Hades had Persephone's father's permission).

And Kore just means Maiden, so it wasn't even her name...

Hello Everyone!

minor ferry
ashen sage
#

hi guys

paper quest
#

Time to crowdsource some new opinions!

# Version 1
for obj in objects:
    if obj.foo != objects[0].foo:
raise ValueError("Foo must be the same for all objects")
    elif obj.bar != objects[0].bar:
raise ValueError("Bar must be the same for all objects")

# Version 2
if len({obj.foo for obj in objects}) > 1:
raise ValueError("Foo must be the same for all objects")

if len({obj.bar for obj in objects}) > 1:
raise ValueError("Bar must be the same for all objects")

Which version would you prefer, and why? You can assume that objects is a nonempty list. Alternatively, is there a variant I haven't considered that would be even better?

willow narwhal
#

I mean you could combine the two checks

#

I don't know if that would make it any clearer

#
if len({(obj.foo, obj.bar) for obj in objects}) > 1:
raise ValueError("Foo and Bar must be the same for all objects")
paper quest
#

I see what you mean. In context it would probably make it slightly less clear, although you could reword the error to make it work well:

Objects must either all belong to the same foo or to the same bar
willow narwhal
#

How many elements are going to be in objects typically? Is there an upper bound?

paper quest
#

Typically I'd expect it to be definitely less than 10.

#

Although I don't think there's technically an upper bound, but a big number would be anomalous.

willow narwhal
paper quest
#

Well, yes, but in context those are mutually exclusive. Or at least I think of them that way. Idk if the end user does.

willow narwhal
#

I think I find the second version clearer then.

paper quest
#

Why is that?

willow narwhal
#

It closer resembles how I would express it in natural language: "Is there more than one foo among these objects?"
As opposed to "Is there an object whose foo differs from the first object's foo?"
It also avoids making any of the objects special.

paper quest
#

Mm. I was considering whether to manually maintain a foos_seen and bars_seen pair of variables to incrementally build through the loop, but realized that it would be unnecessary since we can just compare with the first element. Personally I think it would just have made the loop version more complex, though it would contain more words in it to hint at the intention I guess.

#

For the record, I agree with you, but I don't always know if I can trust my intuitions.

paper quest
#

I should stop nouning placeholder variable names. I don't want to belong to a bar.

tardy rain
#

My close friends dont have kids yet

#

But 2 of them are married so theres that

#

We're all leaving things too late i think

muted trail
#

I think a strong reason for that is, how we care for our children.

I think its self evident, that the young ones are are meant to produce the offspring - but are they also ideal to care for them?

The more educated people happen to be - and the more wealthy or intelligent - the less inclined they are to actually get children.

I think a core reason for this is clearly, that the more educated you are, the more aware you are that actually committing to children at such a young age, is bonkers.

Its sensible, to have them cared for by the older generations, and let the young ones enjoy their youth.

tardy rain
#

Older people usually got stable much quicker in life than we can right now

#

My grandmas mom had 8 kids starting at age 18

#

One of my grandmas had 4 kids as a parttime seamstress

#

My other grandma had 3 as a primary school teacher

#

Cant do that nowadays

willow narwhal
#

That was actually forbidden here until relatively recently

#

Female teachers were not allowed to marry (or were fired immediately upon marrying).

#

(I am aware I'm stretching "relatively recently" a bit; it was deemed unconstitutional in 1957; but in the context of "grandma" I think it applies)

royal tartan
#

pithink why would they forbid female teachers from marrying?

willow narwhal
#

(The same applied to more jobs, basically all public officials (not that there were many women in those jobs), stewardesses, ...)

royal tartan
#

i'd imagine that if that were the case they wouldnt need to make it illegal
it'd just be a trend of women who stop being teachers when they get married rather than being barred from it
why was it introduced in the first place?

#

is it one of those "this is what people do anyways so might as well write it into a law" type things?

willow narwhal
#

Several reasons, including sexism obviously

#

They were also not supposed to be competitors to working men.

royal tartan
#

this is why everyone hates lawmakers
they always come up with the dumbest laws for obscure and usually personal reasons that never age well

#

then it takes decades to undo the damage

willow narwhal
#

It was also a useful instrument for politicians, with which they could react to the job markets, because it was enforced to various degrees over the years/decades

#

So if there was a lack of teachers it wasn't enforced, when there were too many, they could just fire many women.

royal tartan
#

and how's the market for teachers rn there?

#

over here there's a severe shortage atm

willow narwhal
#

Depends on the type of school and subjects

#

But also shortages in many places yeah. Surprise, when they get paid badly and don't have job security like in the past..

royal tartan
#

yeah same situation here im afraid
it's a poorly paying job, and there's only so many people who want to do it out of the kindness of their hearts

The lucky one is working remotely for an Australian company and getting paid in Australian dollars. But their currency is significantly stronger than ours, so he makes bank

muted trail
# tardy rain Older people usually got stable much quicker in life than we can right now

Stable is maybe suboptimal as a description here. They were just as overwhelmed with it, the kids payed the price for it, and the women who raised the children, just like everyone else, simply happened to be parentified and traumatized in several other ways.

Awareness about these issues was not as high as today, as these people took these conditions as normal, necessary and even natural.

There was not much choice either, considering women couldn't even open a bank account for the longst time, they had essentially less legal rights to themselves as children do today - which happen to be fallen significantly behind those of grown up's in several aspects on their own.

tardy rain
#

By stable i mean a full time job that covers expenses and a house that was most likely paid off because it cost 7 blueberries and an apple back then

muted trail
#

Yes, that's true.

Although these times happened primarily in the US, and a couple of other countries.

tardy rain
#

My grandparents on my moms side built a 3 flat building on a teacher+government employee salary

muted trail
#

Yeah, the US particularly took a nose dive on that, considering how much money and power they gave to the companies.

I wonder, why lots of people are still cheering that policy, they dont see that they hurt themselves, apparently.
