What was the deal with unique usernames then

so i use openrc as my init system and currently im compiling cinnamon for my DE/WM

when it comes to my kernel i used the automated kernel build since im a poser and dont know how to configure my own kernel

i chose amd64 23.0 for my profile so most of my DE dependencies were built in my live environment so its easier to emerge xfce / cinnamon / gnome packages

And that your outlook and view on life will be directly caused by your status, which is almost entirely based on your circumstance, which is determined entirely on the luck of your birth. While it IS possible to break free from circumstance, it is not something that everyone can do, and requires luck on top of a lifetime of work.

Been rewatching Death Parade

#

I don't remember much and I'm enjoying it

#

If I can fully unlock the ability to rewatch that gives me a massive bundle of joy for months to come

#

For now the relevant constraints I see are:
- Cannot rewatch shows I have active context in.
Like I haven't watched death note in a really long time but through media I have constantly thought and remembered it

- Cannot rewatch shows with old animation/video style/quality.
This is a different problem, I need high res and modern animation

glossy niche
#

tho i didnt know it was full on plaigarism pithink

fringe rain
#

So just finished rewatching death parade

#

Great experience, much more intriguing to me than some other anime even though I've already seen it

#

Some things I realized:
- I can rewatch certain anime now
- I hadn't actually finished all 12 episodes the first time(I think I watched 8), and maybe if I did it would have had a more lasting/memorable impact and hence restrained me from enjoying the rewatch
- I watched this anime at least 3 years back, I also watched a lot of other anime 3 years back. I think this is the start of a good rewatching journey

Some things I'm yet to discover:
- If I can rewatch and enjoy a show I did that time, which wouldn't meet my current standards. For example, maybe I wouldn't enjoy rewatching Naruto today, assuming I forgot it
- I probably still wouldn't be able to enjoy an older anime with bad animation, but I can experiment

I'm going to try rewatching Salaryman's club now

man chatgpt is so good at writing build.gradle files

#

I'm glad

#

that shit is annoying

patent girder
#

What are build.gradle files used for?

tardy rain
#

To build

#

Gradle

lunar shore
#

well, gradle is a java package control and build system

#

and the build.gradle file basically automates that process with these things called "tasks"

#

tasks are like functions that run some commands

#

like, building your program, running your program, etc.

patent girder
#

I see. Well it's cool that LLMs can be used to automate some tedious tasks

lunar shore
#

it's not tedious per se, but I have no idea how to use it LMAO

patent girder
#

oooh...

lunar shore
#

it's literally so weird

#

like to add a dependency, you have to first identify the repository of that dependency, then use some weird syntax to add the dependecy to your project as an "artifact" or smth

#

weird stuff

patent girder
#

Oh I think I heard people talk about how java is weird with dependencies just today. In pygen

lunar shore
#

java is weird with projects in general man

#

like there's so much boilerplate

#

in Python you just pip install or at most, initialize a venv, activate and then pip install. In Java? Wellllll!

patent girder
#

public static private pip install {

lunar shore
#

for some reason your project files should be inside src/java/main/package_path/

lunar shore
lunar shore
lunar shore
#

yep. that's the default path for gradle

lunar shore
#

yeah those "abstractions" are very very annoying to learn

#

I mean, it's fair cause Java is MADE for enterprise projects

#

but like, why make it so difficult to use dependencies? It's so much extra work

graceful basin
#

so it matters less

lunar shore
#

but I never was even able to do it properly

#

some packages use maven

#

some use gradle

#

some use ant

#

idk there's just too much going on

#

unless your build tool is not the one your dependancy uses

lunar shore
#

yeah

#

that's the problem

#

I added the repository

#

I also added the dependancy as a "implementation"

#

but then in my module-info.java, it doesn't recognize the package

#

I'm literally just trying to add a screen recorder module to my javafx application

#

and it gets complicated like this lmao

#

man I literally have to learn a lot

#

my past couple of weeks have been learning and learning only

#

any time I tried to make a project

#

gradle had something for me to learn

#

and java in general ig

#

the site has a maven guide, not a gradle

#

so I'm just trying to see what the pom file is

#

and adding it

#

I think it's a custom repo they have

#

lemme check

#

yep

#

custom repo

#

custom pain

#

ugh nevermind this package

#

imma just manually implement the recording lmao

#

Oh

lunar shore
#

are .exe files just pure machine code?

#

or more like header, op codes, footer, etc.

graceful basin
lunar shore
#

I see

fringe rain
#

This is just my addition to the discussion, I'm guessing it works like this:

So consider how most .exes actually talk with the OS not the hardware
Like a game, it tells the OS to open a window, set the window title, tell the pixel colors etc.
It's probably communicating with the windows operating system through a specific format

That's probably why you can't just run the same executable on any operating system, because its the operating system actually reading the executable file and executing it

lunar shore
#

Ah

#

So it's almost like a VM

#

like the python vm or the jvm

#

but for an entire OS instead of a language

#

Basically like a "translation" layer

#

to machine code

fringe rain
#

i guess

lunar shore
#

coooool

#

right

fringe rain
#

i do wonder how stuff that runs on baremetal (like operating systems) are compiled though

lunar shore
#

probably like C code or at times pure assembly, converted to machine code using an assembler or smth?

patent girder
#

Well, I believe there's some software that's responsible for communicating with the hardware and sending the OS instructions to it, it may be the kernel if I'm not misremembering

clear acorn
naive igloo
#

at least PE format (which windows NT uses) has entire file hierarchy inside of it

#

like a tarball

#

then OS (whom you asked to open the file) reads said executable

#

and it reads metadata about it, how it wants to be located in memory, on what dynamic libraries it depends on etc

#

OS satisfies all of its needs

#

before that it also allocates memory for its stack and executable itself, loads the executable into its own memory (after satisfying dependencies and linking), sets up its own virtual space for it, a task and i think some more stuff

#

and then it adds the task to the scheduler, and now it will be executed

naive igloo
#

now the reason one executable format cant be opened (natively at least) on another OS, because of different OS expecting different format

#

more precisely how you pass arguments to syscall

#

on linux at least its via eax and ebx registries i believe

#

on windows idfk

#

and also that different OSes have different APIs

#

for example windows doesnt have VFS (at least as same as linux's, afaik)

#

so for example if app, which was made for linux, uses some linux-VFS-specific syscall

#

windows will just not understand what app wants

#

and kill the app (for the app's good, to not cause harm to itself and data)
