i swear these past few days every time i see you in ot you're always telling people obvious things
bad things are bad
And it's insane that I have to
is it a moderation policy/etiquette that you don't cban those people instantly?
war crime this, can't eat the dry wall that
I'm too nice, it seems

I'd prefer to nudge people back to behaving, but yeah, I'm too kind I think

god, I forget how annoying it is to not be able to have draft comments in PR reviews
what Software u on?
Also fuck bit bucket for making drafts the default not the second option
leads so many accidents
oh forgot to mention github
Kanye Test
I want to be able to just write draft comment responses as I edit my code, and then submit all of them when I push my changes
ohhh, responses
That cat has more groove than I could ever dream of having
right, like commenting "Fixed" and resolving the thread or whatever and then bulk submitting the responses when I actually push the fixed code
This guy looks like he can groove
seeing yesnt and yoinked in chat together is so trippy theyre the same person in my head
but yoinked isnt a snow leopard.....
wait they aren't the same person?
idk man theyre both pithinking leopard posters

i would post more servals if i found more servals in the wild and not being kept as pets

i should tag my snow leopard pics so i can find them easier
ill tag every serval pic i post with n so people can just search from:yoink has:image n

I am going on vacation next week for one week. So that means my company won’t have an active software developer until I get back
enjoy you vac
Should quickly whip up a KeezyGPT for them
Wont have to deal with the backlog if no one's there putting things in it
Lock it down

I want to encourage usage of tickets
I'd rather not have a list of emails/teams/etc to deal with
Nice and clean list of tickets that I can prioritize

Wheee, finally going home today and I don't have to travel for at least a month
Hm?
I did not get to travel for work 😔
It is so wildly overrated
Hotels lose their novelty after about three in a row.
It's come to the point where I have personal beef with specific airports and very strong opinions on which terminals in airports are the best
what airline
Whatever airline that has a direct flight for where you want to go is best airline
Oh, I have beef with a few airports too
I'm still angry at philadelphia and ft lauderdale.
O'Hare is top of my shit list
what happened at philly 🗿
LAX coming in at a close second
My least favorite was on a small island recently: my 4pm flgith was delayed to 10pm. I showed up at 8pm, to find out that: TSA closed at 6pm, so too bad.
That would drive me to murder I think
The people in front of me had a cruise the next morning.
At minimum I would start a coup against the TSA
It was having to change terminals. Its completely impractical to go from one terminal to another.
Was this recently or more in the past?
Years ago, mrs. bobby won't forgive Philly for it.
In Philly's defense, they've since corrected this and it's not as shit to move between terminals
do you have a son named robert
so true they have the sidevator things
All my kids are named bobby. My daughter too.
Ah, a family name.
moment of truth, will my self-hosted runner run?
.8ball
Your input was invalid: question is a required argument that is missing.
Usage:```
.8ball <question>
.8ball chat, will BillyBobby rizz?
Signs point to yes
Finally hit the point of: "Why do we keep paying github?

Wow. First try. It's actually running
imagine paying for github.
The 8ball knows all.

I mean, it still failed. But it mostly ran.
Better than bitbucket
bit...bucket?
I don't know why bitbucket didn't just call itself mug.
lol
we pay for ghec
That's ironic. Githubs self-hosted runner image didn't have... "git".
I think one of my 5-year goals at work is going to be convincing IT leadership to go to gitlab or anything else
obligatory git != github
but... but ... it's in the name
katj9 is a kat
We will be migrating from a self-hosted enterprise account to a cloud enterprise account. I'm not convinced it is worth the pain it has already caused before anything is even moved.
factually correct
oh we just did that
some teams are still migrating
maybe related: I spend four hours today chasing down a dumb ssh issue to allow a remote box access to clone a repo.
Hooow is this plane still de-boarding goddamn, it's like a clown car
If you never de-board you never need to re-board.
I know the answer to this one and it's children
basically... airlines just want your money and they use some of the most inefficient boarding (and deboarding) methods
It's the people who make zero effort to get ready to leave until the moment it's their turn
I'm speaking to myself at this point but even just boarding at random would be more efficient than the way planes do it nowadays
why
There isn't really a method to de-boarding though. It's just a get off the plane free for all
Random boarding actually is, iirc, the preferred method because it balances human nature with a good-enough solution.
yes and yes
but since the introduction of points systems and different classes, they have started to play more with boarding groups
and, did you know, they sorta actually use the most inefficient boarding method too?! That's right! First class and business class go first, practically going front to back, which is the slowest method of boarding possible.
- The most useless cannabis amnesty box to ever exist
- The seating tries to be "modern" and the result is less usable seating
- Their food either sucks or is cafeteria-style without cafeteria seating
- Weather is so shit flights are constantly delayed
- I had a flight be cancelled because of plane maintenance and had to spend a night here without my checked bag, so fuck that shit
- You just have to walk a mile between terminals. There's no other option, not even a go-fast flat escalator
"cannabis amnesty"?
Well that's the other thing, O'Hare is terrible at consistent terminology. So the difference between terminals and concourses isn't clear and the signage also sucks.
So there are buses between terminals, but you have to re-enter through security. There is no transportation between concourses and you just have to walk
but yeah i distinctly recall the food at ord being garbage
so o'hare airport is just like o'hare lorax. evil
"drop your not-allowed cannabis in this box and we won't charge you with a crime. Except the box is right behind the security check"
😩
Japanese airports are going to enforce a new tax refund system
but maybe it's nicer if you do all the pre check in and fast pass stuff or whatever
Without precheck it's just not worth it
I've never had precheck take more than 15 minutes of its worst day
precheck and global entry are life savers
do you have one of those fancy travel cards
Also not having to take off your shoes or empty out your bag >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
maybe just never go international
australia's domestic is pretty bad tho
nvm
just don't travel
too much effort
dude the airport vibe is so based
but only for international flights
domestic stuff is just a pain
I totally need to travel once I'm in college
You're in us right?
There's a bunch of schools where you can apply for freshman year abroad

mhm
exchange programs and stuff, right?
I'm thinking about it
Some schools, like northeastern, send 50+% of their freshman class to other campus internationally
oh huh, 50% is a lot
Other schools ask you during the application process if you're interested in an international freshman year
I'm not sure how I feel about an entire semester abroad, though
traveling to some random place with friends would probably be fun in general though 😌
Yah. Most schools have semester abroad programs. Have a friend who did a semester at sea
(I don't understand how it worked)
huh
oh I think I've heard of that
my sister mentioned it before
My advice: every school has a 'pitch'. Make a short list of schools just to hear their pitch (not because you want to go there, but just to hear how they differentiate)
hmm, I see
anyone know something similar to cloudflare tunnels that supports streaming?
and http 1.1 / 2
I'll be applying later this year
One school in my area has a 'no fail' policy, for instance: a fail is just a drop
I've got a list of colleges on a spreadsheet that I want to apply to
we'll be touring a few schools this summer
oh rip
(He visited other schools, but decided not to apply)
My advice would be ED as much as possible, it's nice to have some acceptances before January
And the thing that killed him was the stupid 'why us' essays.
I got the opposite advice from my counselor, actually 👀 he said my chances would be marginally better if I applied regular decision for most of my choices
Most of the schools wanted a highly customized 100-300 word essay on why he wanted to go -there-
I'm already stuck on the general college board essay 😭
I have like a notes page with 30 different things I want to write about, but nothing is fleshed out and I can't decide
What? That sounds backwards
I've always heard ED is preferable to regular, and EA has an even higher rate
I would get a second opinion on that recommendation, it's contrary to what we paid someone a lot of money to hear 🙂
apparently it's generally inflated, most people applying ED have more competitive stats, so most of the "great" candidates will apply early and that conflates the application pool, and makes it look like the acceptance rates are higher for ED
I see, I'll consider doing that
I was essentially told that whether I applied early or not wouldn't severely affect my chances, and I'd get an extra semester to bump my GPA if I apply RD
I dunno, I don't stress the stats. A few of my sons friends got their dream schools off waitlist (ie: had to wait until June)
Oh fair, that was a consideration. Still, might be nice to pick off a few safety's early.
another problem for me is that at the school I go to (and my district in general) grades are very inflated, we offer like 72 APs classes, and most everyone has a very good GPA, so standing out academically is very difficult
since with the sheer amount of APs people are taking, the GPA boosts are pushing their GPA a looot
so I'd want to stand out either with my ECs, SAT, or essay
Yah, we figured it's just a random dart throw
so I am kind of stressed as to whether I'll get into anything except my safeties 🥴
This information is also useful to me in around a year :)
good luck 😩 it's stressful
Well, it's not around a year anymore... it's this year :|
Tbh, even his safeties were solid, we visited his acceptances and all of them were contenders.
AAAA
I have one real safety lol
or early next year; I'm actually not entirely sure; I should probably know this
GMU, but that's like twenty minutes away, and while it has a decent CS program, I really don't want to go there
probably
One of his was a huge state school with very generous acceptance policies: and they had a really great story
my other is Rutgers, which I'm faiiirly confident I'll get into without much fuss
my state school has gotten incredibly competitive in the last few years for whatever reason 😭
Rutgers has a nice campus, I like that school
yeah I'd be fine with Rutgers
Same here, son couldn't get into the CS program here... super competitive
mine overaccepted during Covid, compensated for that the next few years, and overaccepted again last year 🥴
Yah, that's happened to a lot of schools, plus the state u's haven't grown their CS programs fast enough
what is your list?
uhh, I have it somewhere, let me fetch it
but add UVA to that list
(university of Virginia)
VTech is my state school
BU's has gotten quite competitive
Homie wants to go to watermelon school
yeah, figured it was worth a shot, though
apparently my school has a "relationship" with BU, so they're more willing to accept from us
But: why nothing warm climate?
further south, or like, California?
Half of those are in hellhole hot humid climates the fuck you talking about billy
California would be a bit too far for me
Georgia? Second only to Florida and Louisiana for heat and humidity
New England winters? At least aboo doesn't have Rochester or Syracuse
I considered San Jose state, but that was too far for me
I don't know where carnival watermelon is
ASU is a good safety: they have an automatic acceptance based on SAT
oh huh, I'll look into it
but Arizona is quite far
It's massive, but massive = lots of programs
I do know about a handful of those, I know some people who went to ICPC for purdue
ah, I'll be applying to unc chapel hill
I can't remember why I remember rutgers
Stanford is the university of office character, automatic good school
Have you visited rutgers yet?
This is why i stopped playing BTD 6. I will not keep a program on my cell phone, let alone a GAME, that I PAID for, that commands me to update it. It should be illegal to disable a working piece of software in order to force people to update it, especially when that software was purchased with the intention of OWNING it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/btd6/comments/kcqe32/is_there_a_way_to_skip_the_forced_updates/
extremely based
CMU when?
That would put you right in the heart of the silicon valley and a prime location to bootstrap your career
we're planning to this summer 👀
You need to visit before you apply
Am not gonna lie, I cannot fathom the case where someone would not even entertain any west coast university, especially around the bay area. It's such an opportunity and career miss
(at least for driven people)
hah, I will
the campus can't be that bad >.>
it's just too far 😔
I'll probably be fine career wise regardless
💀 Missing on huge opportunities because it's too far
"fine" is all relative. It's like saying people will be fine without a degree. Sure, they will get a job, just not necessarily the same
Cali bad. No college there
I'll concede that I'm leaving some degree opportunity on the table, but there's enough career opportunity on the East coast that I'll likely be successful regardless, and at least for me, I'd prefer prioritizing being closer to family over heading to the west coast.
I still can't fathom it though. But sure
...what's wrong with west coast universities?
they're great, just too far
probably further than 2h of flight from east coast
West coast is a shell company for Ohio
Nothing, at least I don't think.
Just need to pick a path and walk it. Making impact and change where you go. Living your life.
I wonder if you would still benefit from visiting one of the universities. For the sake of the minimal regrets framework
I could also arrange for you to visit some of the startups
I wouldn't be against it
im doing freeplay on btd6 lool
uh
hold up when did i leka

i cacn never get further than >140
i can beat 140 sometimes
but
i cant get any further
on btd6?
...
I would play btdb2 with you but I'm busy watching my anime
about me
Oh wow I like how people also play btd6 in this server
btdt6
okay osu's just clicking buttons
what
better than some tower defence
osu practices muscle memory
btd6 practices... dragging monkeys so that they can work as your slaves popping balloons
Tower defenses are strategy games. Osu is rhythm and reaction time.
Both have their place in this world

a tiling browser? nice
nah it's not going to be that advanced
i literally just want a youtube player
but now that you mentioned it, it doesn't sound like a bad idea
my original goal is simply to have youtube search on the left and an embed version of the video on the right ||did you know that embed videos does not show ads||
can't you just use ubo
well yea
but this is more fun
and i have an excuse to try pyside
learn how to make mustard gas w/ NileStygianBlue
one of my goals day to day is simply to know at least a tiny bit more than yesterday. takes out the impostor syndrome out of the gate too since im mainly just comparing me to me the day before
Couple of jokes in that sentence there
im basically coping
Aren't we all coping.
🥛 copium

how tf does it play on the commandline
it doesn't? it opens a window
it's just controlled from command line
though there are also TUI players I think, but that's rather esoteric
oh okay so the toolbar part of VLC
i thought its playing every frame on the commandline
i'd want that though
more like a stripped-down VLC, sure. literally just a player and some basic UI.
it's very capable under the hood, though, and you can write plugins for it. very nice.
arent those called "GPU accelerated terminals emulators" or something?
i think kitty and alacritty are likethat
that's not what I meant - i meant showing videos in a console

either by resizing the video to a pixel-per-character, or... you could in theory cheat by having a terminal that can show videos. I think kitty supports showing images in the terminal, say.
does it do the former? seems like it just does the latter with the expectation of a terminal that supports it
what does?
theres a protocol for it, kitty probably recognizes a standard too
mpv
it does neither, it opens a window
it's CLI because you control it primarily by CLI arguments
anyway, the way I configured my mpv, I get a lightweight picture-in-picture player that's also capable of showing youtube stream chat as on-screen subtitles. very nice.
It can actually play it in the terminal directly using supported protocols
scripting it can be very useful
Tho the fps is rather low when you do that
I've written stuff for going through frames, hitting keys to select start/end, for later exporting of frames in that interval as images
oh, I see, there's a kitty image protocol. cool.
ah, and tct
Could be rather useful if you are trying to find a specific video file over ssh or something
--vo=caca sure looks weird
--vo=tct is actually fine
hmm, looks like my Konsole version is too old to support kitty's protocol
kitty or alacritty
hmhmhmmhmhmhmmmmmmmmmmm
alacritty works on windows so that might just cut it for me
OH TOML SUPPORTS JSON SCHEMA
VERY NICE
windows terminal smh
skill issue shouldve followed SOLID
tbh
configuring aan extra terminal seems more work than its worth rn
im just gonna stick with whatever comes with my OS until i see a feature i really need
du -sh .config/discord/
332M .config/discord/
ffs why is discord taking a 300mb dump in a CONFIG DIRECTORY
dude its full of caches and PNGs
Yeah, it's annoying when applications dump their cached data in a configuration directory
why in configuration directory tho in all places?
Laziness, I dunno? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
.config/discordcanary for me is 1.3G :3
no I did not
they just use ~/.config/discord*/ for the location to put anything browser related - all the storages (local storage, ...) and config files
eaiser and nobody really cares about it, I'd rather they spent time on the actual app instead of worrying about partitioning their config and cache into the correct directories
hmmmm i was hoping id check my .config file into a git repo or something
My laptop keeps accumulating more MBs and I don’t even install any new applications nor download anything
try windirstat if its windows, i think you can save a snapshot from it

run it periodically and the folders that grow will become easy t osee
linux has like 10 similar tools
windirstat on the command prompt?
not really, put it on your calendar llol
I'll rsvp
Ahh it’s a software
i prefer to call that stuff a "GUI"
Softwhere?
the vote pool for the petition is too small, theres no way to prove that it is not biased

I heard a great one on a podcast today
In regards to a website they were trying to figure out how worked
"The code has characters that shouldn't even be possible, some parts in are in binary even though the majority is Rich Text"
(Referring to the backend, which makes it even more cringe than it already works)
the previous, now removed, "happy pride month" message was possibly insincere. this one is not
@foggy jungle
Discussing obfsucation and its affect on the broader open-source supply chain.
I see two typos here.
You know... every time I read this I find a typo.
If you ctrl+f5 in about.... however long it takes the code runner to pick this up seconds, it'll be fixed lol
brick it
r/unixporn has been slacking lately
3 years ago was its peak
oh i miss you u/woowak01
its not the year of the linux desktop :(((( ( ( (( (( ( (
Honestly
Linux needs about 90% of distros to die and one actual good desktop experience to come out
Give it like 10 more years in the oven
doesnt ubuntu have a pretty good desktop experience
its the kind of thing that wouldnt be scary to install in school cs lab computers instead of windows imo
infact ive been told by someone here that their school does this
It's good as long as you don't try to do anything more than browse the web and write a word document
The edges show up fast and are very sharp as soon as you care to do something actually interesting
Ubuntu repos are too outdated to have all the modern niceties for Linux gaming
Or any real development work unless you want to add a dozen PPAs and enter dependency hell
(or manually compile your entire toolchain)
Picking a Linux distro is a game of "where do you want the sharp edges"
I normally go with Tumbleweed for desktop because it's rolling release that's actually functional. Updates don't just break your entire OS like arch for example
The edges come in the form of it not being one of the "big 3" so package availability is smaller, support is less, and you generally need to know what you're doing on a Linux system. Community is great though
Fucking
Pikachu reaction
Pikachu reaction
Pikachu reaction
we really spamming pikachus with this one

what kind of development work?
its not fun when you dont have monthly explosions from your OS tho
i agree, desktop experience and gaming experience has improved greatly in the recent years
Being better than nothing doesn't make it good
fortunately its not "better than nothing"
anyway, seiously though, just because you may not agree with with the direction arch has decided to take, but that doesnt mean it is a bad distro
its just not for you
it's not even a question nowadays. It's just taken for granted
things just work
yeah, nowadays you can go and install a hands off distro like linux mint for your grandpa and have him use it comfortably.
that is a massive change compared to before
that was already the case 20 years ago.
The main predictor of success is your social network, not the OS in use.
?
i didnt get that
Ye, for the simple things Linux desktop works
complex stuff too
God no
for most things linux work
maybe you could elaborate?
I've broken so many installs to Linux package managers being broken by design
seems like a skill issue /j
the main predictor of success if what OS your friends use because that's whom you go for help.
So I know plenty of people who started with mac and have friends who use mac and they can't use any other OS. Same thing for GNU/Linux or windows
linux package managers aren't broken by design
The second you need 2 versions of a thing, the entire paradigm breaks
i'm the only one who uses linux in a 100 mile radius 💀
And now you're using docker
so now you introduce security and maintenance issues
Nix is a solution, but so is windows
other OSes don't have any solution for that
windows is a solution to some of linux's problems i agree, but it has wayy to many downsides compared to its upsides
Linux has a solution for that, it's flatpak/snap/appimage and it's worse than software management on Windows or mac
its not?
what issue does flatpak have?
besides, there are version managers for most things that you might need
Not really.
- Neither windows nor mac have a solution for that
- Linux package managers do have solution for that (ex: how they maintained both python 2 and 3 at the same time). They just don't want to deal with multiple trees
- It introduces security and maintenance issues
- Static linking and containers are ways to address these, but do not prevent security and maintenance issues
this is a strange hill to die on
Flatpak consumes such an absurd amount of disk space and updates so aggressively that it is actively unusable on any system you don't update on a regular basis
any static linking or container will duplicate bits
I had a machine I took to lan parties with flatpak installs on it and it took 1-2hrs to update every single time
i have flatpak, never had the issue
If you update on a regular basis it's fine
i didnt update for 2 months due to network issues? never had a problem
with flatpak that is
Weird
flatpak isnt pacman, you can go a pretty long time without updating
It doesn't break like some systems,.yes
either way, that does not make linux not working for the lay person on the desktop
it's way too niche to matter
we aren't talking about complex things anyway
A system that works in 95% of cases is useless
? windows is the same? it works 80-90% od time
I want something that works in 100% of cases, and windows with wsl covers that
no it doesnt, it just doesnt
It's not ideal, but it can at least run all software on all hardware
can't even handle simple cases
linux can run most as well
never had a hardware issue with Linux in 30 years
linux has much better driver support than windows
You clearly don't use weird enough hardware
But printers are way better on Linux, yes
same could be said about not using mainstream hardware enough on windows :kek
edge cases exist for every os, even windows would struggle with that
When Linux does work, it is usually more ergonomic than windows+wsl, but e.g. Linux drivers which aren't part of the main tree can't support every kernel version
dont about that one 💀 /j
it works on my machines
So now you have to figure.out which specific distro they set up their compilation for
Because the kernel breaks them with version changes
it almost always works, the same is true for windows, it almost always works
Which is a fine choice
if you are a beginner, you should stick with fedora and ubuntu
don't try more advanced distributions
I don't care about almost always
windows is "almost always"
every os is
i dont wanna say it, buut this seems like a slight case of skill issue
There was admittedly one incident where I would've had to build a custom WSL kernel and I just installed Linux
Or well, a too custom WSL kernel
none of these make GNU/Linux unfit for simple or complex use cases
these are all about preferences
and that's okay. We all have different tastes
but we should not conflate taste for facts
I've had Linux break on me way more than windows, even when I was using RHEL
yeah, some people actually like gentoo
some
that's not the normal or mainstream experience. Something wrong was being done
I don't do exclusively normal and mainstream things on my computer, yes
I don't think that's unusual
maybe you were not ready for it yet
most of us here dont
we are all away from the mainstream one way or another
just use whatever makes you happy
but that does not mean other solutions aren't practical
The second you run out of "driver in main tree, software out of packages", Linux starts sucking a lot more.
not really
Windows lets you build with just about any toolchain that has ever existed, albeit with difficulty, and the executable will work. On Linux, glib alone makes breaking changes on a rather regular basis.
There's a reason every distro has to build its own packages
that's not how things work
By breaking changes I mean changes that break binary comparability
why do you mention a "issue" with linux and then isntead of defending it, just move to another "issue"?
I understand. And that's still wrong
Oh, does glib not break ABI? I remember running into that before, but it could be a different library
Hm, have I been doing that. If so, apologies
no worries, it was just somewhat frustrating
its like moving the goal post away at the last second or having a 5th phase in a boss fight
it does not. There are binary guarantees made.
See for instance the LSB
In addition, a lot of issues are placed upon linux when it actually comes from skill issues from the vendor of a specific hardware
they can either specify to an existing spec/driver, provide their driver in linux, or provide an external module. In addition, there are issues related to whether or not their driver is open source or not
but the issues of that vendor do not mean linux is bad (or not). It's just a reflection of the market of users for that vendor
As a whole, Linux probably still handle far more hardware than windows
Sure, Linux can't magically force all vendors to make drivers on Linux, but that still means that if I have such a piece of hardware, I can't use Linux. And I can imagine some hardware exists that never got windows drivers, and doesn't work over something common enough that you can pass it to WSL somehow.
Let's flip the problem. At my $JOB, we only support mac and GNU/Linux. Does that make windows bad?
No, I can use WSL and use your software.
not really
that would require a lot of tinkering
because of WSL issues
That's fine, everything on windows requires absurd amounts of tinkering
I guess that answers my question 😉
static linking here is like, putting everything in one executable that you can just yeet around?
for a CS student, im thinking I may get a mac (2022 macbook air m2)
But for the storage, would 256 gb be way too little? Considering how much space you have after the OS install sizes of course and basic apps
my university website doesn't specify and specs so generally from where can I found out from?
I have a 150 GiB disk on my macbook, and I've yet to fill… 93% of it
buy storage according to your needs
well this is probably a dumb question but how would i know whether its enough
i don't plan on gaming or anything so not much unnecessary apps
do you have any contacts that are already in the uni?
just for programming and notes and stuff for university
nope
I don't think you'd need much then
if your uni uses Google Workspace or provides you a GMail account, it'll also come with Google Drive space
I suggest making good use of that too
You can always download more anyway
What do you call it when you are in act of doing something because you messed up somewhere previously?
rectifying?
well you could be making it worse still
there's not enough information
fixing?
The act is supposed to make up something from a previous error
math: determine the length of
could still be making it worse
what it's supposed to do is different from what actually happens
that doesn't matter
yes it does
I was rectifying it, but worsened it instead
I was attempting to rectify it, but worsened it instead
the answer to Keezy's question is still rectify
nah
okay. get rekt… ified
Bars
you can say you are rectifying it, if you think you are actually doing that. but if you aren't actually rectifying... then you aren't
Okay i think “it’s supposed to” in the sentence can throw people off
Let me rephrase:
The action of saving something from a previous error or mistake or any wrongdoing
true tbh
Dont need to sound smart if you just are
rectifying isn't much of a snob word
@umbral breach re: #python-discussion message
I didn't mean to imply that, my point was that if it happens to you then you're at least partly to blame because you're the one who sent the message in the first place
When you are fixing something, that doesn’t imply that you made a mistake or a wrongdoing
A mechanic is fixing a car but that doesn’t imply that they made a mistake
So it matters
Rectify wasn’t even the word I was looking for
It was redemption
Rectify doesnt mean to fix a mistake tho either
It means to set right
Wind blows, your antenna gets moved
You rectify its position
It actually was designed by famous mathematician George Cantor and based on the notation of set theory. Frank Herbert and he were close friends at the time of writing the first book
That is as true as Python having gotten its name from the snake
oh i thought cantor only dealt with the diagonalization arg and sizes of sets not with notations
herbert space filling curves? do they look similar nah
eid mubarak :)
i loved dune
its like they made it with the intention of getting phonk edits
This is above my level of historical math knowledge, but if it wasn’t clear I was just messing around (except for the fact that Python wasn’t named after the snake. It was named after Monty Python)
Etymological word of the day: Cycl
The Greek root word “cycl”
means “circle.”
Examples:
Bicycle
Cyclops
Cyclone
Encyclopedia
"circle of learning" aka a complete learning
somehow i think this is a downgrade from fallacyposting
Well again, the fallacy posting doesn’t fit with the demographics of this server
you're misunderstanding the "cycle" bit. It's not a cycle but meant as a circle, as in a complete thing you are encircled by'
just post about python
📈
I'll take etymology over fallacies. At least it can't be weaponized for frustrating conversations
r u etymology posting now?

English classes in elementary school don’t teach the etymology of words
because it's not necessary
frustratingentertaining 😎
let me break out the greek.
encyclopedia comes from "enkyklio paideia"
"enkyklio" can mean circular but in the greek days it also meant "general" and was intended to be mean as something all encompassing.
So "all-encompassing/general learning"
You learn what a word means right away when you haven’t heard or read it before
not really. there are tons of counterexamples
Shush psv, this is better and cooler
tbh that kinda does work for some fields like medical
But keezy you should include the original word in the post
For example:
Trisect
You know what it means and you guys probably never heard it being used before
medical has SOOOOOOO many words that my med student friends have a whole ass medical terminology course
I have absolutely seen the word trisect being used before. Chem phase diagrams be wilding
that said, i am in favor of butchering english and simplifying it if it makes it easier to undestand
like
"shud" makes way more sense than """"""should"""""""
you can make and argument for should but that L can take the L
English is already pretty simple
is it your mother tongue?
No
I feel bad for non-native english speakers because we draw from several different languages, so pronunciation is a bitch. Like we have "he wound the wound"
i think we should butcher english until its completely phoneticised (wow etymology look at this new word) :333333
the roots of "archaic" and "monarch" are very similar, and you would not be able to figure out which unless you actually knew which root it was
i ran into this when studying for the GRE
I might have to read up on more of these pronunciation issues after I have read my current book.
the pronunciation of "colonel" always sends me into a rage
ehhhhhhhhhh idk about that
my mother tongue has soooooo many sounds that english doesnt dream of having, some sounds are virtually unique to it
where's that tom scott video about language sounds that could exist but don't
i think it's on youtube
its actually ramaضan but teaching it to everyone would kinda be too effortful
ح خ ض ع غ ق ص
do not exist in english
far too many to teach the avg person

no 😔
so you can't make cat noises
Trynna teach the gf greek words has her meowing at me 😹
nice, glgl
if there's another technical error i'm giving up on the ms
honestly, very reasonable
or more likely, not apply to schools that require it. which isn't that many, tbh

have you considered that i may just have skill issue?
its a wonderful thing
real
hmm
how do the fish get into the lake
Do we own ourselves?
It's illegal to own humans
I was listening to a debate and one of the debaters said ownership is socially constructed. For example, there was a guitar hanged up on his wall and said there’s social constructs in place that makes him own that guitar; He wanted a demonstration from his opponent on how one would own themselves
You try to test that social construct and you get fists flying
that would confirm the social construct
ownership is a very hotly debated topic in philosophy/ethics/politics/sociology whatever
Out of?
i remember like at least one week on ownership in my computer ethics class

tahini + yoghurt + garlic 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Only in certain countries
yep.
The downside is that it is now your responsibility to maintain it, build it and update it across all your supported platforms.
And given that's rarely properly done, it means that if you have 10 different software statically linking that same library, you can bet that most won't get updated frequently or in case of security issues.
The benefit is that it does give you more freedom and ability to work around the different platforms and communities. For instance each community/platform may provide a different version, or none. That means you would have to either deal with different versions and work with each community. But then the maintenance is done by these communities.
Also to support multiple versions, there are initiatives like https://docs.pagure.org/modularity/
bro wanted to fight 💀
people be thinking too much
🦀 🦀 🦀
Enterprise co-pilot update:
GitHub Copilot can now search Bing within chat conversations in VS Code to answer questions and find information outside of its general knowledge or your codebase.
Neat, now the AI search engine can call other AI search engines to answer a question.
sounds, fun
Bing
💀
and get results with cited sources all being from ai generated articles
:)))))))))
I see, so it's kind of like having a lower level of abstraction where you have to care about which libraries you have linked statically?
Not really a lower or higher abstraction.
Either you rely on a library provided and maintained by the system, or you bundle your own version.
In the first case, the benefit is that you only need to update it once for all the software to benefit from it. The second case means you are responsible for updating it
ah isee, thanks
Trilingual
Is another example
"trite"
triton shorestalker
tristicular
tripe
trivago
hotel?
Biumph
uniumph
ununoctiumph
118-umph
So weird to mix latin and greek numbers
Etymon of the day: Hydr
Hydr– comes from Greek hýdōr, meaning “water.”
Examples
Hexahydrate
Carbohydrate
Dehydration
Hydrophobia
is etymon a new type of pokemon?
sounds more like a digimon
keezy are you gonna address the counterexamples or just etymologypost
btw, chad german moment. "hydrogen" is too mainstream. call it "wasserstoff" instead (lit. water stuff)
What counterexamples
also@hexed sierra what textbook should I use to learn diffeq
what's this? etumon evolved into etymon!
What counterexamples?
i'm afraid i don't have any suggestions there, i disliked the ones i used in undergrad. maybe try asking in the maths server
I mean keezy's whole point is that etymology helps you understand words if you don't know them, but it just doesn't
"trite", for the last one
What about it?
what does it mean from the root "tri"?
Three
I meant trite
Well etymologically the “tri” means three in “trite”
.wa s define trite
repeated too often; overfamiliar through overuse
Wodór in Polish is quite similar
unite
repeated once
Truly
no, it has a completely different etymology
.wa etymology of trite
Its french 😔
thanks
"used till so common as to have lost its novelty and interest," 1540s, from Latin tritus "worn, oft-trodden," of language "much-used, familiar, commonplace," past-participle adjective from terere "to rub, wear down" (from PIE root *tere- (1) "to rub, turn"). Related: Tritely; triteness.
also from 1540s
Well i guess they are exceptions then
tring-tring
so you can't use it at all
You know “cycl” means circle and “tri” generally means three in most words so “Tricycle”
Assuming you never heard the word “Tricycle” before
"appeal to probability" is a logical fallacy
the what?
no, people are terrible at statistics anyway
that's why games rarely show or use true stats when doing things at random
... The opposite. There's no word "cycl", only prefix cycl-. And cycl- prefix comes from "cycle"
Tricycle is tri+cycle. No "cycl"
explain this
things like a 70% accuracy rate in a game, for example, are often closer to 100% after applying an expansive map
Encyclopedia
😭😭😭
Which one?
It has “cycl” in it and it’s not used as a prefix
... Nope
It'd be fairly simple to get all the words that start with tri and their etymologies and see what % of them is the "tri=three" type
Cycl is not a word but it’s an etymon
gotta catch 'em all, etymon
if the point is to get the meaning of a word using only etymology, then it's not possible. the existence of exceptions means that you need to know the exceptions, which is the thing you were trying to avoid in the first place
FYI: I never said “only etymology “
Etymology is the study of both the origins and meanings of a word, is it not?
Somewhat baked into the act itself; there are multiple meanings to most words.
it was clearly implied
words weird
return to symbols
since this is pedantic o'clock, i'll add to what preocts said. if you know the history and origin of the word, then you do get the meaning
Where? Point it to me
if you mean just by looking at it, then no
Nope. Encyclopedia is not a word created in English, it has evolved as a whole first in Greek and then in Latin. It came from ἐγκύκλιος + παιδείᾱ ➡️ encyclopaedīa / encyclopēdīa
Basically a direct translation from Greek enkuklios into Latin as encyclo. Not "cycl", not even "cyclo", but whole "encyclo"
right. keezy has only been posting word roots
This is ot1, the pedantic pool.
But the “cycl” in “Encyclopedia” is there for a reason
...

You know that “Octo” means “eight” and a “syllable” means a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants.
So now that you know those two meanings, you know what an octosyllable is already even when you heard of that word for the first time
... It has cycl because that's literally a substring of (en)cyclo. Doesn't mean "cycl" is a word.
I could say "cy" is there for a reason and it would mean as much as your "cycl". 🤦
