  1. The most useless cannabis amnesty box to ever exist
  2. The seating tries to be "modern" and the result is less usable seating
  3. Their food either sucks or is cafeteria-style without cafeteria seating
  4. Weather is so shit flights are constantly delayed
  5. I had a flight be cancelled because of plane maintenance and had to spend a night here without my checked bag, so fuck that shit
  6. You just have to walk a mile between terminals. There's no other option, not even a go-fast flat escalator
grave cove
#

damn

#

no transportation between terminals?

young shoal
#

"cannabis amnesty"?

honest star
#

Well that's the other thing, O'Hare is terrible at consistent terminology. So the difference between terminals and concourses isn't clear and the signage also sucks.

So there are buses between terminals, but you have to re-enter through security. There is no transportation between concourses and you just have to walk

(I don't understand how it worked)

low chasm

#

granite tree

(He visited other schools, but decided not to apply)

low chasm
#

hah, I see

#

I've got...11 I'll be applying to, iirc

granite tree
#

My advice would be ED as much as possible, it's nice to have some acceptances before January

#

And the thing that killed him was the stupid 'why us' essays.

low chasm
#

I got the opposite advice from my counselor, actually 👀 he said my chances would be marginally better if I applied regular decision for most of my choices

granite tree
#

Most of the schools wanted a highly customized 100-300 word essay on why he wanted to go -there-

low chasm
#

I'm already stuck on the general college board essay 😭

granite tree
#

Yah, he was editing until the last minute

#

I don't recommend

low chasm
#

I have like a notes page with 30 different things I want to write about, but nothing is fleshed out and I can't decide

granite tree
#

I've always heard ED is preferable to regular, and EA has an even higher rate

#

I would get a second opinion on that recommendation, it's contrary to what we paid someone a lot of money to hear 🙂

low chasm

granite tree
low chasm
#

another problem for me is that at the school I go to (and my district in general) grades are very inflated, we offer like 72 APs classes, and most everyone has a very good GPA, so standing out academically is very difficult

#

since with the sheer amount of APs people are taking, the GPA boosts are pushing their GPA a looot

#

so I'd want to stand out either with my ECs, SAT, or essay

granite tree
#

Yah, we figured it's just a random dart throw

graceful basin
#

Weird

pliant nexus
graceful basin
#

It doesn't break like some systems,.yes

warped sentinel
#

either way, that does not make linux not working for the lay person on the desktop

#

it's way too niche to matter

graceful basin
#

I don't care about the layperson

#

I care about complex things

warped sentinel
#

we aren't talking about complex things anyway

graceful basin
#

A system that works in 95% of cases is useless

pliant nexus
#

? windows is the same? it works 80-90% od time

graceful basin
#

I want something that works in 100% of cases, and windows with wsl covers that

pliant nexus
warped sentinel
#

windows and wsl are a problem, not a solution

#

such a shit show

graceful basin
#

It's not ideal, but it can at least run all software on all hardware

warped sentinel
#

can't even handle simple cases

pliant nexus
warped sentinel
#

never had a hardware issue with Linux in 30 years

pliant nexus
graceful basin
#

You clearly don't use weird enough hardware

#

But printers are way better on Linux, yes

warped sentinel
pliant nexus
graceful basin
#

When Linux does work, it is usually more ergonomic than windows+wsl, but e.g. Linux drivers which aren't part of the main tree can't support every kernel version

pliant nexus
graceful basin
#

So now you have to figure.out which specific distro they set up their compilation for

#

Because the kernel breaks them with version changes

pliant nexus
graceful basin
#

Which is a fine choice

warped sentinel
#

if you are a beginner, you should stick with fedora and ubuntu

#

don't try more advanced distributions

graceful basin
#

I don't care about almost always

pliant nexus
#

every os is

#

i dont wanna say it, buut this seems like a slight case of skill issue

graceful basin
#

There was admittedly one incident where I would've had to build a custom WSL kernel and I just installed Linux

#

Or well, a too custom WSL kernel

warped sentinel
#

none of these make GNU/Linux unfit for simple or complex use cases

#

these are all about preferences

#

and that's okay. We all have different tastes

#

but we should not conflate taste for facts

graceful basin
#

I've had Linux break on me way more than windows, even when I was using RHEL

pliant nexus
#

some

warped sentinel
graceful basin
#

I don't do exclusively normal and mainstream things on my computer, yes

#

I don't think that's unusual

warped sentinel
#

maybe you were not ready for it yet

pliant nexus
#

we are all away from the mainstream one way or another

warped sentinel
#

just use whatever makes you happy

#

but that does not mean other solutions aren't practical

graceful basin
#

The second you run out of "driver in main tree, software out of packages", Linux starts sucking a lot more.

warped sentinel
#

not really

graceful basin
#

Windows lets you build with just about any toolchain that has ever existed, albeit with difficulty, and the executable will work. On Linux, glib alone makes breaking changes on a rather regular basis.

warped sentinel
#

not at all

#

that's factually wrong

graceful basin
#

There's a reason every distro has to build its own packages

warped sentinel
#

that's not how things work

graceful basin
#

By breaking changes I mean changes that break binary comparability

pliant nexus
warped sentinel
graceful basin
#

Oh, does glib not break ABI? I remember running into that before, but it could be a different library

graceful basin
pliant nexus
#

its like moving the goal post away at the last second or having a 5th phase in a boss fight

warped sentinel
#

In addition, a lot of issues are placed upon linux when it actually comes from skill issues from the vendor of a specific hardware

#

they can either specify to an existing spec/driver, provide their driver in linux, or provide an external module. In addition, there are issues related to whether or not their driver is open source or not

#

but the issues of that vendor do not mean linux is bad (or not). It's just a reflection of the market of users for that vendor

#

As a whole, Linux probably still handle far more hardware than windows

graceful basin
#

Sure, Linux can't magically force all vendors to make drivers on Linux, but that still means that if I have such a piece of hardware, I can't use Linux. And I can imagine some hardware exists that never got windows drivers, and doesn't work over something common enough that you can pass it to WSL somehow.

warped sentinel
graceful basin
#

No, I can use WSL and use your software.

warped sentinel
#

that would require a lot of tinkering

#

because of WSL issues

graceful basin
#

That's fine, everything on windows requires absurd amounts of tinkering

warped sentinel
#

I guess that answers my question 😉

# glossy niche static linking here is like, putting everything in one executable that you can j...

yep.
The downside is that it is now your responsibility to maintain it, build it and update it across all your supported platforms.
And given that's rarely properly done, it means that if you have 10 different software statically linking that same library, you can bet that most won't get updated frequently or in case of security issues.
The benefit is that it does give you more freedom and ability to work around the different platforms and communities. For instance each community/platform may provide a different version, or none. That means you would have to either deal with different versions and work with each community. But then the maintenance is done by these communities.

Also to support multiple versions, there are initiatives like https://docs.pagure.org/modularity/
