I can fit a 7B with a 2048 token context inside vram
anything bigger I need to swap out to cpu
depending on the model of course
Mistral models have been pretty good.
There are some weird ones out there I haven't tried though.
It gets weird fast.
I stay in the well-lighted clearings of the AI forest.

I'm gonna start having personal beef with sharepoint. LET ME DOWNLOAD THIS PDF
NO, YOU CAN VIEW IT ONLINE
no
sharepoint doesn't like to share?

I'm on shitty train wifi, let me download it aaaaargh
view online and then download it as pdf with one of those extensions
train wifi?

Need to connect to a VPN to do anything useful anyway, so not really a concern

Oh you think shopping listings is fun? Ya ever just:
https://twitter.com/search?q="as it goes against OpenAI's use case policy"&src=typed_query&f=live

real
Why is everyone so confused
iirc, @gritty zinc originally suggested an alteration to the name policy concerning imitations of other users, at which point @foggy jungle changed their name (in imitation) to ConfusedRemtile, and it caught on. i think this all happened in a staff channel, but i cannot find it, no thanks to discord's terrible search functionality

that uh @silent didn't work huh? it still pings, but it shouldn't give a notification
i found it, and it is in a staff channel: #the-pydis-mass-layoffs-lounge message
Is there a rule about names that are similar to pingable roles
Eg some dude named @moderatorz with a z cause they think theyre cool
p sure a couple times i tried to ping mods some random guy popped up in my autocomplete instead
slirp
LEEEEEEEEEEEKS
See you next week

There's loads of content on YouTube.
Matpat and Tom scot both leaving is sad
MatPat's content isn't going away entirely because he doesn't do a lot of it himself. GTLive will still happen because it's not just him.
I'm glad Tom Scott is taking a break.
He said he is exhausted.
MatPat said he wanted to do something different.
He's a family man now you know
Ye i understand both their situations
it's ok to feel sad but it's good they are in a position where they don't have to like get other jobs because YT wasn't working out or something
They just want to step away to make room for other things which is cool.
MatPat said he wants to write some mystery thing
Veritasium next

If you're sad about Tom Scott leaving YT watch him play The Royal Game of Ur (the oldest known board game) against Irving Finkel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZskjLq040I
YouTuber Tom Scott has flown drones through lightning, he’s taken on the first human-powered theme park, he’s even visited Penistone. But he’s never taken on a British Museum curator in the world’s oldest playable board game… UNTIL NOW!

Your messages read like texts from a Nokia 3310
I don't know if I'm proud or sad about the fact that I tapped the message out without thinking. I low-key miss pocket texting.
Actually, that should be this year's physical project for me. A 12-key for my smart phone. I might be able to use it to text again. haha
🤨
Also we've hit -1°f
nooo
There's something to be said about a keypad with tactile feedback. Touch screens require you to be looking at them.
Fair
Though even with the tactile feedback, I still end up a key or two off all the time
I miss being able to scan a message and tap out the response with my phone at my side or in my pocket. No need to break my eyes from the world.
What do you have to hide??
The location of the rave from the authorities. ((I don't like not looking at the world around me when I'm walking around))
That's a big argument against touch screens in cars.
wack
Yeah it's messed up.
That was 2018 and maybe we've gotten a bit better but bias still exists for sure.

Have you guys ever heard about Devtranet? It's like a community website for programmers. It is pretty new and still developing, but I think you should take a look, tell me what you think. I think it will be like the next LinkedIn. Here's the link: https://devtranet.tech/ or you can just search for Devtranet on Google.
have you staged them already?
wdym staged? like git add?
yeah
one easy way to resolve this is to use
config.py
!cogs/utils/config.py
💀
maybe smth's wrong with vscode
maybe i should commit and see
btw you shouldn't be committing pycache
oh, if you've already committed the config.py, you'll have to remove it in the commit
like git rm -c config.py
oh, okay
thx
okay, that's the easy way
but not ideal, since you might add more config.py files elsewhere in the future
hopefuly not]
Just use /config.py instead
that's what I suggested at the start, but it didn't seem to work
because i didnt do git add .
vscode is weird at editing .gitignore
perhaps
could you try this now?
From git docs
If there is a separator at the beginning or middle (or both) of the pattern, then the pattern is relative to the directory level of the particular .gitignore file itself. Otherwise the pattern may also match at any level below the .gitignore level.

Did you know that git filter-repo --path example/path/to/something --invert-paths will irreversibly delete your entire repository
git reflog should have the undo
It didnt for me
fun
Very nice
i will use this
Make sure to use --force for extra effectiveness
And when you're done you can just kick your computer.
i have a challenge to yall, it's a message in portuguese encoded with my own method of cryptography, someone can reveal the message?
BCBHCCBHCDBFABCCBCCDCGABBCCBCFAFAGCGBCCDAGABCF
That'll show it who's boss.
What if you did git init in system32 and then did it
then a new git repo would be created in system 32
How many words? Any diacritics or just Latin characters?
Oh and next time don't spam it in all the channels.
It's cringe as hell
only ASCII
stop saying "cringe"
it is
It's cringe of you to ask me to stop
🙄
buy it
You missed the part after, when you'd do git filter-repo --path example/path/to/something --invert-paths --force
thanks

I have noone older than me in my family (as my siblings and cousins)
Oh nice!
all my cousins are younger than me lol
Oh nvm only 1 cousin is older than md
I'm near the oldest in my immediate family (mom, dad, uncles/aunts, first cousins)
I've got three cousins older than me, the rest are younger
So everyone in my immediate family are girls. My cousins, my sister etc… I’m the only guy and I turned out to be gay
😂
WHY CAN'T I HAVE A FUCKING OLDER SISTER, THAT'S THE ONLY THING I WOULD WANT
I mean, it's probably just like, having a younger sibling
That's a legal thing
Doesn't require any blood
Just adopt
I've got master plan
But I don’t like babies
like, most people fight with their siblings >.> I don't think it'd change if they're older than you
Why would you want to?
Cuz babies cry
If I become 18, I will adopt a 17 year old girl that turns 18 in a few days, then I'll just make her my sister and shit

you are advertising for something
I'm sorry to hear that. I have no intention of advertising, but ask a question. A poll is just the simplest way to see how people perfer.
You do have an intention of bringing attention to something outside of this discord
that's by definition an advertisement
that's kind of a stretch
Well. I'm sorry that I can't find that definition on dictionary. I advise updating the rules to be less ambiguous.
Thank you very much for bringing it up to my attention. I will advise accordingly and escalate it accordingly to our policies
Here we go again. Simple poll. Please reply with emoji ✅ and

Are you for or against using CI systems to make repo changes, including dependencies version updates, i.e. automated commits?
let's take a step back: why are you asking these questions?
Like CI was established as a standard over not having any for the last 25 years
common tools to do this simply create a PR automatically so that maintainers can review
so what's the point of your question?
I'm making a repo that will build custom container images. I want to add an auto update script that will trigger a new image build when the dependencies, which may or may not on GH, have a new release. I need to keep track of the last version used, so I have two options: commit the version data into the repo, or write it down somewhere that I can retrieve later.
I'm simply gauging on what most people do.
yeah, CI/CD are standard practice for the last 25 years.
It helps reducing the costs of deploying new versions and helps provide early feedback
Lock files
that is a thing you can do, see dependabot, gh actions
So store the version data in the repo and update via PRs?
i thought i was gonna be on the computer for an hour or so in order to write tests for my codebase
it's been 8 hours and i'm not done
That's how it's normally done
Be as declarative as possible for reproducible builds
And then updating your build is as simple as changing your declarations

I don't remember what it's like to program drunk.
But you're right, probably not a good idea.

i think it's a randomly generated name for the channel
Someone told me it's not entirely random.
@heady solstice #python-discussion message
why?
maybe not, but it's a bit hard to believe that they manually change this after some time
Why do they do it that way? It's fun perhaps.
sure it is, but why to change periodically and manually?
I don't think they do it manually.
if it's not manually, why should be not totally random?
If you read that message someone told me how they do it
sorry, now i understood the mention of other channel, "they are suggested by staff based on funny things they see, then randomly chosen."

haha, ok
i have a secret
i prefer cachaça
don't tell anyone
cachaça is popular around the world, but with name "caipirinha", that is cachaça with lemon and sugar
i will buy a caipirinha now
Ah, until 2013 we called it Brazilian Rum here in the US but there was an agreement https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2012-04-09/brazil-u-s-move-to-boost-cachaca-tennessee-whiskey-trade-1-
cachaca for whiskey
Because no matter where you are in the world people like to get turnt
we have rum too, it's similar, but cachaça have a nice touch of rat fur and cockroach wing
most stills of cheap cachaça are dirt
That's what I was reading @heady solstice - Wikipedia said there is concern for copper stills
philosophical question:
Occams razors states that the simplest explanation is likely the correct one (or something like that)
can we say, in a SWE environment, that the simplest solution to a software problem is likely the best?
A SWE doesn't deal in absolutes. The best? The worst? These are product owner terms. Stray not to that path. Keep it simple. Keep it safe.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm makes sense
i was first introduced to it in ML class, specifically with decision trees
so i wanted to see if i can generalise it to something more general than algorithms
The general approach I'd suggest is to look for the simple solutions. These aren't always the best. Nor are they always the worst. They are, however, what allows you to advance even just a step forward. Spend too long looking for the perfect solution and you'll find you can't move anymore.
agreeable approach ig
ty for entertaining the argument
What's really interesting is when you stop looking for solutions and start questioning the problem itself.
I so expected just a dead-pan
"They are, however, simple."
get rekt nerd
proofs are needed for most of CS in some form
Why are you taking DSA if you don't like math?
its a prereq
thank you sooooo much
heres an example question
Suppose you are working in the information technology department for a large hospital. The people working at the front office are complaining that the soft- ware to discharge patients is taking too long to run. Indeed, on most days around noon there are long lines of people waiting to leave the hospital because of this slow software. After you ask if there are similar long lines of people waiting to be admitted to the hospital, you learn that the admissions process is quite fast in comparison. After studying the software for admissions and discharges, you no- tice that the set of patients currently admitted in the hospital is being maintained as a linked list, with new patients simply being added to the end of this list when they are admitted to the hospital. Describe a modification to this software that can allow both admissions and discharges to go fast. Characterize the running times of your solution for both admissions and discharges.
yeah my computer is awesome
Maybe PM should take a course on how to write a good jira ticket
Until then, closed: wont fix
But we can serve the app from your computer, to the customer, if it is working.
when did I say DSA was fun?
thank goodness I have the solutions manual @fresh basalt
Solution: A good solution is to store the set of currently admitted patients in a hash table. This allows both admissions and discharges to run in expected O(1) time, which should cut down long lines of patients at discharge time.
haha I totally said DSA is fun
lulz
proofs strengthen your conviction that you're saying correct things
So when you get snooty with people on Discord you have evidence to back it up.
At least I think that's what they do.

weird question, i need a java book on project based learning, or any other offline resource
i have a friend who live somewhere with very poor internet
download the documentations and print them
that is not very helpful for project based learning
why not?
so go to project based article and print
works, but a book is more practical
books are more expensive and sometimes don't have stock
dont worry about that part lol
Any Java advice I would have would probably be out of date. I haven't looked at a Java book in over 15ish years probably.
i tried on my way. i don't know any java book, sorry
ok, thanks regardless
also you may transcribe a tutorial
on youtube
and take some screenshots to increment
a book would be a much better alternative there
this is basically equivilant to writing a course myself and shipping it
no clue, i think he works in hardware mostly but wants to learn
its a weird situation
i'm almost sure there're many courses like that in somewhere not hard to find
already sent him a 1k java book from oreilly
Anything by Joshua Bloch is going to be good.
aboiut a month ago, he should have gotten somewhere by now
oh, ill look that up, ty
Joshua Bloch actually worked on Java for Sun and he also worked for Google.
our reality are too different hahah, in my country people just take advantage of any hint
I don't know that his books are focused on project learning but they are reputable.
i think it's because good books are most inacessible for most brazilians, that's why i said could be expensive
people have no choice
Can you go on ebay and buy the international version?
It's what I do when books are too expensive here.
and not necessarily pirating books, people accept most of tutorials, that's not wrong
i might be able to, but i usually use the book for 3 minutes then drop it
so i rarely actually buy it
for uni
they make their own books with free content of internet
The thing about online tutorials is that the quality is hit or miss.
Usually anyways.
It depends on the subject for me. For example in my AI class the textbook was great to have as a reference.
that was not a barrier for me to learn python. If the tutorial is low quality, i go to another, and another until have the good quality
some text books are really nice, yeah
but if the book is by some shitty publisher like pearson
The problem is that when you are starting out you don't know how to tell what is good quality.
I have not touched a textbook since HS.
its my moral duty to steal it
Do you have servants to handle your textbooks?
tutorials or books, always have the risk
wtf why am i in the pins lmao
that's why i watched many
You're famous. Can I have your autograph?

@heady solstice Well not everybody is discerning you know?
books are my only option at this point
sure, but if you have no money to start or no advice from anyone, you would do anything to learn, right?
eBay, Alibris, and Powells are all great sources to get used books from.
I'm really into killing trees.
i learn better with videos
also not rarely i just start doing anything, and check if it's correct later on next seconds of the video
i like to try by myself first and fix late
im really into killing the publishing industry
just don't kill the president

lol
faster than a jet
let's drink cachaça and let jokes for later
you come @glossy niche ?
obnoxious way to say i dont drink, but i appreciate the invite
Disciples?
Haha, because you don't drink, he too

there are people who spends long time in a converstation with chatGPT?
there're people for everything, but it's a common thing?
Openai hired me to pretend to be a robot so they can sell chat gpt
I signed an nda but I don’t care
No you didn’t
People are profiting with litteraly anything
Never was too easy to profit as nowadays
Tiktok
ugh tiktok i only use YT shorts
The sets are everywhere on online shopping.
Apparently Euclid’s algorithm can be used to construct rhythms, which match up with various rhythms that existed in cultures around tbe world across different time periods
Must mean that music has something to do with evenly distributing beats
we have time signature to tell us how many beats to distribute over time, and then we can subdivide a unit of it with whole, half notes, quarter notes, so on so forth
so yea, music is in part distributing beats over a certain unit of time
Ye but the interesting part is when things don’t divide evenly
Like trying to spread 7 beats evenly over 12 beats
That’s what produces these rhythms that are famous in many cultures
unusual time sigs are around
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septuple_meter
Septuple meter (British: metre) or (chiefly British) septuple time is a meter with each bar (American: measure) divided into 7 notes of equal duration, usually 74 or 78 (or in compound meter, 218 time). The stress pattern can be 2+2+3, 3+2+2, or occasionally 2+3+2, although a survey of certain forms of mostly American popular music suggests that...
Yeah but i meant in 12/8
that i don't know
For example X o X X o X o X X o X o
That is the Mpre rhythm of the Ashanti in Ghana
It’s also the result of distributing 7 evenly over 12 using Euclid’s algorithm
And if you pick other odd numbers to put into Euclid’s algorithm with 12 (or 8 or 16) you’ll get the rhythms of various other cultures around the world
wdym put into euclids algo?
the algo produces the gcd, do you mean that or some intermediate steps of the algo?
(X) (X) (X) (X) (X) (X) (X) (O) (O) (O) (O) (O)
(X O) (X O) (X O) (X O) (X O) (X) (X)
(X O X) (X O X) (X O) (X O) (X O)
(X O X X O) (X O X X O) (X O)
X O X X O X O X X O X O
is what he means i think
following the procedure from this paper
i wouldn't really call it using Euclid's alg personally
the paper itself makes a distinction of calling it Bjorklund's algorithm instead of Euclid's algorithm
It's useful to generate rhythms.
It's neat.
I would say 3+2+2 feels the most correct to me.
can i get virtual hugs?
No
old man hugs are stinky anyways
Yes the intermediate steps
Haven’t seen this paper yet, thank you! I just learned this from the introduction of a book I got called “Algorithms”
And that too is an application of the Euclid algorithm with 3 and 7. And I agree that’s the best 7 rhythm
Oh Euclidean rhythms. I was out running errands and thinking about that.
It’s pink Floyd’s money
I’m wondering if there’s some alg that can generate melodies or harmonies
A little bit 🙂
I made a MIDI controller that’s a ball you can hit and spin, and I also made a GPT to MIDI thing. But that’s been about it recently
Big pure data fan I haven’t gotten the courage to go into supercollider yet
But I have a friend who performs live on supercollider a lot
Wbu do you live code music?
oh no
Doing it for an audience seems really hard
I have lots of personal experience with music production though
been into music for a long time in one way or another
started with fast tracker back in the day then mad tracker 2 (a little buzz tracker). Used Reason for awhile (messed around with FruityLoops but never really got into it) and Cubase, then Cakewalk a little bit at school
Right now I am using Reaper and Waveform
Damn that’s awesome
I don't really do anything though. I had no instruments for awhile but recently got an Alesis Recital Pro and then a Yamaha Pacifica so I am making myself learn those
I did school choir from an early age so I know some theory from that
I feel like theory is putting words to what your ears can already figure out. You don’t really need it to make music
also dabbling with piano and guitar but like never really buckled down to learn the instruments (because i was really into electronic music anyways)
no I think that's a bad take
Hm why? I play a lot of instruments and I guess soaked up some theory from playing classical music. But I couldn’t tell you much theory
You can definitely make music without knowing theory but knowing theory gives you a language to communicate with other musicians
and that's what it is all about
Jazz composers would beg to differ
Charles Mingus taught his players by singing them the parts he wanted them to play
And you think Charlie Mingus didn't understand theory?
He didnt need it to communicate with musicians
When you get to a high level you sort of understand it through second nature which is why you can communicate it that way
Watch the Jacob Collier and Herbie Hancock video from WIRED to see what I mean
it's almost like they use shorthand to communicate with each other because they already understand the technicalities of what is going on
Yeah I mean certain things like intervals
like any field at a high level
The intervals between notes and names for common chords are useful to explain things
And rhythmic terminology like off beat and pickup
Theory is also important for developing skills like relative pitch.
theory and practice
I think that being able to match pitch is a skill you develop in childhood
There's perfect pitch and relative pitch
Yes I mean relative
Anybody can develop relative pitch
If someone sings a note, you should be able to sing the same note. Some people remarkably are unable to do this
Well anybody who doesn't have like hearing loss or something
Not hearing loss, but a lack of ability to match pitch
Kind of butchers any ability to have relative pitch as well
But if you have that, as well as rhythm matching (I guess you would call it) you can learn any song just by ear
I mean don't take my word for it though. There's this dude with amazing relative pitch named Frank Tedesco who streams on Twitch. He will answer any questions you have about it. He's good because he's been doing it for like 15 years.
That’s cool might check him out
You can def train relative pitch
But I think it develops mostly in childhood
He's one of those dudes who used to surprise people on Omegle like Marcus Veltri or The Doooo
Formal Music Theory isn’t going to help with that part very much
I think it's easier to develop in childhood (as many things are) but it's still possible for an adult.
Yea just by practicing it ig
But what I mean is that the stuff I learned in school about the V chord resolves to the I chord and stuff, I don’t see it being that useful
What is useful is the more fundamental theory about tendency tones, like the 7th note and the 4th note of a major scale resolve to 8 and 3
If you hold down a C note on a piano and then an F note, you can just hear that the F is trying to go down to E
Idk maybe even that you could just figure out without theory
