Shadow-chan đ„ș
Can you please move this topic to shadow pydis?
What he means by shadow is..
Let's say, from childhood you always liked to make pottery. But your parents and your society hated you every time you did pottery as it offends thier ideals. As a kid, to be "likable" and "acceptable" and not "wierd" to others.
Now your shadow is your intrest of pottery
Shadow is your interests which are thrown away for the sake of others
Like celebrities have "darker" shadows ( here darker means a lot of interests have been ignored) . For the sake of thier public appearances
Shadow could also mean by one trying to hide thier true gender orientation for others
Are you a stand user? đł

Joke âąïž
Neuroscience based
reminds me of a time i was talking to a friend and i told him that i support the university adding a critical thinking course to the STEM degrees
and he was like "i object STRONGLY"
and he sends me a book and asks me to read it
and so i do
- page 1: book is signed by the local lunatic theocrat part
- page 2: author says that logic and philosophy are fake and are western propaganda
- page 3: psychology and sociology arent real sciences
didnt get past page 3
10/10 book
why have a special critical thinking course
all of stem is critical thinking
some people are anti critical thinking?
i meant higher level skills
yep
stuff like the scientific method in a more general sense than just physics labs
i can exlpain but would rather not lol
that's what courses other than labs are for
Critical thinking overlaps into so many other courses
i took a research course and was lost asf when i was tasked with writiing a paper
Unless we're talking about like some life preparation course in specific
so i wanted them to teach skills that inform research
Like manage your money, don't fall for scams
i mean, you can include those
but my uni definitely did not reach people proper critical thinking in most courses
Hm wouldn't know. I wanna be an expert on getting money not uni
Because people donât know how to argue rationally.
Deductive reasoning is the mental process of drawing deductive inferences. An inference is deductively valid if its conclusion follows logically from its premises, i.e. it is impossible for the premises to be true and the conclusion to be false.
For example, the inference from the premises "all men are mortal" and "Socrates is a man" to the con...
Ironic
Look up Modus ponens
Alright lunch over and feel good time to make that big automation I need!!!!
Why is it always western propaganda and never eastern propaganda
Tai chi is fake
Soju is bad
What else
Nasi goreng is alright i guess, not really life changing
Egg fried rice is made by small sweaty men in hot shops
They dont even come from eggs
because i live in the east

I've never even heard of her
Is that some kpop lady?
What should I do
This is healing crystal tier propaganda
MBTI bois where u at
Penn and Teller did a funny expose of it on their show called Bullshit
Wuts this
more BS
Is it an acronym for that myers briggs thing
yes
time to plugin my fav wiki https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Psychology
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind; our inner, subjective experience, and behavior; our observable actions.[1]
it has lots of useful info
@glossy niche This guy Anthony Metivier has a blog about neuroscience and he says some smart stuff
It's plugging some book or something
But it was refreshing to read some of his comments
.....Annnnnd I lost motivation to code that thing
:/
you have 5 hours to code it before i call you a slur
Omg
heres ur peer pressues
jokes aside: if you want a source of peer pressure, try habitica
gamification is pog
every stem student I know can argue rationally, it's inherent in the discipline
id argue in the exact opposite direction actually
why?
its kinda complicated
also, this is first week of any intro discrete math course. didn't you have those in school?
but i think that STEM students dont learn enough philosophy
its a common opinion on twitter
but this is how i think about it:
an example of this is ppl pushing AI like stable diffusion without thinking about the wider consequences of how it will be used
like, its debatable that this kind of automation has caused more harm than is worth it
I don't necessarily agree because I think it's more complex than that
wheres that compexity ?
the idea of high level skills like logic and critical thinking is to cut throw the complex details of issues likethis
You could have a good head on your shoulders inherently , through experiences, or be a person with no experiences upon entry to college in the first place.
A person of the latter category who takes a few humanities classes is likely still an idiot
That's how you get videos of ignorant protestors
College students who think they know something
Haha yeah that's an overarching theme
Mysteriousness is likely stupidity lying in wait
well, my entire argument is:
i think that there are higher level thinking skills than STEM that people should learn and it can help people guide how they use their STEM skills

its not really unpopular tbh, i heard it a lot before, its a rather lukewarm take
i can try
suddenly i feel good about being for not being able to shut the fuck up
such as?
Doesnât mean Intro to Critical Thinking isnât useful for STEM students
i would say ethics
why would it be? that's what they do in every one of their classes
i think that we are doing semantics again here
im not talking about math and what not, im talking things like being able to properly interpret the results of research for example
like, my statisitics class taught me how to do a lot of math, but it never told me what to do with it
You havenât taken it so you wouldnât know what youâre talking about
but we need a definition of critical thinking here before we fight semantics again
let me find one
sure. what would be covered in such a course?
Studying logical fallacies
Strawman
Ad homiems
as a side note, I thought you were not a fan of irrelevant courses. you only wanted programming
I took Intro to Critical Thinking long before I enrolled in Computer Programming
so?
In a completely unrelated program
So you what you thought is false
That course wasnât an elective
It was part of a program I enrolled in
I think you learn this in high school somewhat intrinsically
not really
Like learning to cite sources
I guess I made some stupid decisions fresh out of high school though
that's it? for an entire semester?
Why do they feel so strongly against ad hominem attacks? What does that mean to anyone else other than holding moral high ground?
i remember i saw a vid of a streamer saying in order to win an argument you first need to deny the person as a human
Woah they are playing from fascist playbook
Yeah not that I need an ad hominem attack to throw shade
throw shade?
I wouldn't go as far as dehumanizing people though
Goddamn
Like to throw an offhand or sarcastic comment rather than call someone names
i disagree, you are not human
the course that i found most useful here was ethics, namely, AI ethics, ive seen a lot of dumb uninformed takes on AI from technological unemployment hysteria to people celebrating ppl losing their jobs as "automating all of humanity"
i think learning ethics gave me a framework to both think about this and to communicate it
Sounds like confirmation bias
the other side is logic. primarily research. cause ive noticed that STEM students in my uni have 0 skill when it comes to research
what
e.g. they fall for misleading statistics, debunking misleading statistics is the first thing to be taught in a CT class imo
You confirm your bias by saying the takes are dumb and stupid , and that confirms something about ethics course
Meh, I think there's a plausible outcome where the "saying the takes are dumb and stupid" came after analysing the takes
So confirmation bias wouldn't apply
what
Depends if it's objective
someone fear mongering that AI is terrible for humanity cause we will all lose our jobs is definitely stupid

in fact, industrialisation has shown this to be the opposite
It doesn't take an ethics course to extrapolate that technological innovation of computers to that point of unemployment takes longer than we thought.
but thats not really my point, my point is, i think ethics and logic are useful things to learn and that they should be learned in a scope wider than what is applied in class
i still dont understand what you are trying to say
what i meant is: i found it useful because it game me a sort of guideline to follow when thinking about and discussing those things
it didnt allow me to discover new thjings
just think about them more clearly
I donât remember the material exactly because it was a long time ago but everyone in my class had to buy a âIntroduction to Critical Thinkingâ textbook. So maybe look into that book, do own research on the subject and form your own judgement.
I remember us studying the claim âShe is armed. Therefore, she is dangerous.â
If you think something is going to work wouldn't that make you think it is working
what
for a whole semester, though?
Of course
Hopefully you'd be neuroscience geniuses after a semester
how is learning the terminology for ethical theories a confirmation bias?
i dont understand what you are saying
all im saying is
i read a book and thought it was insightful
that seems a bit sparse
Not always
Multiple bias which may or may not be popping off at any given time
if you dont trust me to think clearly then just say so, i am certain it is not a confirmation bias
if you continue with this line of questioning further, then im afriad i would have no choice but to depict you as a wojack, my friend
I think we're forgetting that we *can* overcome (at least some) biases
Huh?
If I wrote a book about neuroscience and I thought it was going to work to make me think clearer, how should I know if it does? How will i do a double blind trial on myself?
I am kinda curious about the specifics of this
the msot important graph of them all
we stopped fucking dying
:DDD
and how's that show that AI won't replace everyone's jobs?
Because I think it's a little bit easy to think "what if this one will be *the one* to hurt humanity"
So what if AI replaces most jobs
this si missing the point
im done talking
I guess on the bright side, automation removes the chance of human error
A concern I have is that "AI automates everything" probably isn't necessarily "terrible for humanity"
True
all driving being atomated would probably be safer
we have more automation that ever nowadays, but hunger is sstill a thing
disease is still here
we still work our selvesto death
and were literally destroying the plant with trash that we made for no reason and then threw awayy for no reason
Ai automates everything isn't terrible for humanity, humanity's reluctance for change is terrible for humanity
not sure what you mean by that
I agree, though some of these don't really feel like problems that will be solved by "more automation"
they need less automation in fact
there is a whole concept called degrowth
Maybe just automating the wrong things
it kinda is that
I wish I could automate memes from my brainwaves
Wouldn't that depend on the abstraction of the automationn
Candidate for automation are those with the least friction
CEOs
I wish i could automate saving that cat
burger flippers would probably be automated if it wasnt more profitable to pay someone 7.25$ an hour to flip burgers
a machine would probably cost way more than that
hence why its not yet automated
States be forcing the min wage up slowly but surely
surely
Here it's 15 and rising
Activate technological unemployment

i think that chatGPT layoffs are evidence for my claim
There's so many debates happening at once,
something about that there's some sort of class which will be a cure-all for stupidity ,
Something about AI
Can you repeat your claim? (Sorry, my memory's been bad recently)
chatGPT layoffs? where did that happen?
Lol there was one company who replaced all their support staff with chatGpt in a stunt
lmfao
A survey conducted by ResumeBuilder.com has revealed that in the United States, around 48% of the companies have laid off or are planning to lay off people while replacing their work with ChatGPT. The survey also took the opinion of business leaders and 9% of the surveyed people said that it will âdefinitelyâ lead to more layoffs while 19% think that it will âprobablyâ lead to more layoffs.
Yeah, and I think they closed the company because it didn't work?
annecdotal but im stll willing to entertain this thought
Think so
Also some guy told chatGpt to make a company for him
and it lost money , told him to sell a shirt I guess?
HustleGpt
for once, i agreed with keezy more than i agreed with you sorrow
I think this is what I'm thinking of: https://www.forbes.com/sites/chriswestfall/2023/05/31/non-profit-helpline-fires-staff-shifts-to-chatbot-solution/
I love how people say âX donât owe you anything.â after one states a problem they have with X.
i was about ot bring it up lol
I stopped trying after all the pithinks and single word what response.
Don't really want to bring it up again either
damn apparently that was 1000 business leaders answering that answered the survey. That's wild
what you were trying to say something along the lines of "studying ethics didnt help you, youre just imagining it"
no?
my money says more than half of the layoffs that will happen will result in the tech illiterate business leaders realizing the pitfalls of language models
and probably rehiring or hiring other people to manage in house models
HogsVak will fall when the sink floods and destroys the Colorado Supercomputer located inside Concourse A bathroom at Denver International Airport
I won't be surprised if that happens, yeah
?
It's too long down the road for me to pick apart the nuance which was in the moment
and your summarization is like putting me into a box without nuance
yoink
no........................??????
oh
i have an undergrad and thats it
oh đ
i did take an AI course at uni and an ML course too
Depends on what you mean by phd
i was gonna sign up to a datascience course as we ll
phd like the biggest degree
but coulndt
it wont land you a better job tho
a job preceeds a phd in fact
they dont lett unexperienced ppl in just like that
it could
it can land you a better job
wdym by that?
but 90% of the time, you need prior work experience to get a phd
at least based on the ppl ive met
lol what
he means the most common path is college--->job---->phd
that's totally untrue
ÂŻ_(ă)_/ÂŻ
College ---> job --> no phd
my friend is going for a masters in AI and they required her to have at least 1 yr of professional exp
same thing happened to some relatives
its annecdotal but i doubt anyone would employ someone with nearly 20 years of education and no job exp

what are you aiming for yoink
what im trying to say is:
no i mean
if you want a job, a phd wont get one for you
what is your next academical step
sorry i tend to mice words
idk
masters if i can
probably in ML?
my plan was to get a BA from any crappy uni
and then a masters from a big uni
like top 100 globally
turned out to be a stupid idea
cause a lot of ppl ive met were rejected for being either "overqualified"
bruh
cause it doesnt seem like everyone finds this to be true
bit annecdotal
who the hell rejects someone for being overqualified for a job? doesnt an employer want the best of the best to do the job?
no, they want the cheapest one
oh
my job is literally in an outsourcing company
i could be making a 100k$ rn if i worked for our client directly
but i make a lot less
they'll ask for too much money, should be a senior role, etc
look on the bright side, you're making money and gaining exp :D
may be regional thing
some companies even go as far as to hire one senior and pay them lots and 10 monke developers
and they have to baby sit them
happened to a friend lol
whats a monkey dev
i mean someone who is sloppy at work
like a first yr or something
yknw
the intern
that guy
Wanna be rich? Just do it
Getting rich is easier said than done
Probably make most people snap like a toothpick
I try hard I hope that if someone else had to live my life they would cry
I hope one day would make them snap
i assumed your like 12

im surprised you know such an old game
sorry for calling you a fetus
yesss i loved it and RA2
WHAT
Life can be a battle for some people but not for everyone
TOXIN TRACTOR
It was definitely a battle for me when I was applying for tech jobs
the fact that you have that saved đ
i only found it a couple days ago lol
this game is not as well known as it once was
cant even get it to run on modern windows without reg editting
theres a mod for it that i love called contra 009
dw im only 4-5 years older
grandpa
i dont wanna imagine that
Ahh my head
Feel all weird
Then get stuck here reading
I wonder if flask for this personal "admin panel" type thing will give me a huge amount of technical debt
Like to just use it as a gui
Flask and html+css instead of tkinter
Hell yeah I'll put an administrator password on it and access it from anywhere inside my network
who here has heard of the low orbit ion cannon
the script or
idk... i wanted to ask if it uses the computer to send packets
like the computer its running on
Doesn't it use a bot network
idk :V
idk either i just know what it is and what it's used for
used for educational purposes
To educate the church of scientology
That program uses your network, to hook to a botnet would be bad news
I think I downloaded it in like fifth grade
They used to talk about anonymous back then like it was doing cool things
In 2008
For every one of us that struggles to find a job theres probably hundreds out there that struggle all the same and dont make it
You have an associate's and you have a tech job, i wouldnt call that struggling
To compare, I've got 2 degrees
This doesnât quite refute my argument
Ooh ooh do we get to play this game? Pissing contest of how hard our lives are?
sorrow is finally embracing the piss
That doesnât invalidate my claim that life can be a battle for some but not for everyone
just block them
I'll start blocking people when the client doesn't make it a horrible user experience
???. This is a civil discussion
Skill issue and I think they fixed it
They didnt
hey for who is good at math here how can i write 1/4 as a power of 2?
All they did was take away the functionality to look at the blocked message

that may have been a homework problem yoink
oh right i am dumb thanks
If u didn't block them by now I don't see why you would
huh?
And this is a problem
It limits people from expressing themselves
discords block feature sucks, takes up too much screen space
of course it does
also the fact that other people know you blocked them sucks
i agree your messages take up lots of space
Only if they try to react to something? I don't think it matters, if you blocked someone shouldn't you feel like "I don't care what this person does or what they say"
yes, but it does create pointless drama sometimes
i got blocked so much back in the day
im surprised im not blocked by anyone here yet, esp with my cat spam and non stop insults
I found out I was blocked by someone once, I'm like idek who tf that is I never interacted with them before, that's fine I block you too!
i cant stop insulting ppl even when i am explicitly told to đ
its just second nature to me

i even came here with good news... now im sad
i just read documentation of threading and understood it in like a minute :D
i feel so smart rn
Oh I love thinking about this:
When you've invested 1 minute into it at the highest possible return and all the minutes thereafter will be much slower
You just spent a minute again thinking about threading at only X% the efficiency of the first minute
Maybe then it was never important to think about speed at all

How do I send a PUT request in Postman?
i know we frown on saying to google things, but come on
literally just alt tab into chrome instead of discord
Recently someone asked about answering to Google something when it comes to non-python stuff and I believe it was said to be fine
what if you need to alt tab 2 times for Chrome and alt tab 1 time for discord
what would you choose
there is a connection, sort of
I got the 405 HTTP response after using the PUT request SMH
Consult the api docs and make sure you use correct endpoint
PUT is usually done on the /something/<id>, not just /something
Because it's for modifying resource, not creating new (like Post)
Ohhhhh so maybe thatâs why it didnât work?
read the docs đż
I was trying to update every ID at once
That's not something that any api has
my api will for no particular reason
read the docs đż
read the docs đż
I love docs
me too
docs are the best thing since sliced bread
!otn docs
I don't understand this "best thing since sliced bread" thing
smh
Sliced bread sucks.
skill issue
Archaic phrase
It either gets dry quickly, or it wasn't real bread in the first place.
whoever went "you know what, I should cut up this loaf of bread" was an absolutely genius
I'm not against making slices from bread, just against pre-slicing it
you haven't had Real American Sliced Bread đŠ âąïž
Still pissed that my shopping list app puts a toast icon when I write "bread"
huh, it just picks an emoji
baguetta is better
it's like discord when they tried emojifying the channel names đ©
that got racist iirc
It's not even an emoji
how
What does "emojifying the channel names" mean
back in my day, discord did something dumb
This is bread.
this is yuck
Carbs so bad but so good
how am I supposed to eat a pb&j with that
This is an abomination
this is nice
Wtf that's a hot take
Bread is bread

enable new UI and you will get it
Idk what that means either
âš
click on it on mobile
and then click on the emoji in pop up few times
then you will be confused and lost for 28 seconds
While its fresh
Otherwise you break your teeth on it
then you will find how to open list of channels
and you will understand what they meant

oh wait, you have to hold
not click
you can disable new ui in settings -> appearance btw
You can also disable it using the same method you enabled it
bread is bread
Well yes, âx. x=x
Strange. So I can update the name field but not the id field when send a PUT request.
huh really?
real
Uh, how would you expect to update id? Id is something that just is. Like id in Python. You mutate the object but id stays the same. To change id, you gotta make a new object (and hope it gets the id you want, because you don't control what id it gets)
Wow seriously? That sucks
It's as if you wanted to change your discord id. You can change your profile but your id is what actually gets passed around and links e.g. messages to your account. Changing id means that everything breaks
real
as id identifies you
that is what id stands for iirc
It's a pain when identification changes. The point is for some identifier to identify one thing
If it changes then it defeats the point
real
This is going to be a problem. So my objects in my sandbox version wonât correspond with the program because the previous developer wrote IDs that are in the live version
just make some bridge id?
like your id, and then the object has a field which has old id
I was trying to match up the IDs that are in the live version with the sandbox version
If he could assign specific ids to objects then read the docs and find out how
nan đ€š
NaN makes my logic unhappy
just make = not defined for floats
Development db shouldn't get merged with prod db, only code
You could find max id of current prod data, then migrate the dev db with their ids+max_prod_id (so if prod has 42 entries, then dev id 1 becomes prod id 43).
But that's for direct db merging, not for playing with api
If prod is being actively used, you can use higher offset so you don't conflict with what gets created after you check highest id and before you actually merge it
Like +100 instead of +42
Back to "development db shouldn't get merged with prod db" - dev db is something that should be ephemeral, that you don't mind destroying and re-creating.
Sometimes it gets re-created from prod data (so if db also stores some kind of config or bugged data, you get it), never the other way around - because there shouldn't be any "live" data in dev
dev is ideally a snapshot of the prod db
mfw regulation gets in the way and you cant legally do that
Dev vs QA in bigger orgs that have all those. Dev is often local to each developer, QA is testing and snapshot of prod db just makes sure it works with real data (as opposed to whatever dev had)
What if you dont have access to the data at all because its legally the client's property
Then making prod work is the customers problem
Customer wont pay đžđžđž for you to figure it out though
relevant meme
what if you use UUIDs for IDs in db?
instead of incremental
what if you mess up and accidentally wipe prod?
Impossible. Iâm using public and private keys that exclusively give me access to the sandbox
what if some bit switches due to solar radiation and it gives you access to prod?
I've prod access đ©

So I thought of a solution to get yourself prevented from getting in trouble with a superior:
If a superior is speaking, engaging or interacting to/with you; Only rebuttal, give pushback, object unless requested by the superior if you have any of the aforementioned.
In that way you will know if a superior expects a response or if a superior wanted to give you a lecture. Thoughts?
.wa s define superlatives
an exaggerated expression (usually of praise)
Like not every response to a point in a conversation is a rebuttal
Or I'd hope you're not thinking of it that way at least
Just like any relationship, I would present like softened versions of my opinions before I whip out the really fascist opinions.
I'd say maybe try to be less argumentative in general
Maybe even dress up my opinions in a easier to swallow package, especially for a superior with a superiority complex
Or not respond unless requested by the superior
Im sure there's a way to navigate such encounters. With everything there's nuance.
If they tell you "hey I need you to code that thing by friday" okay can do! Is your response. Maybe if the deadline won't work come up to them later with the concern
seriousness, slightly annoyed, or pissed off tone comes into play
Modifies context of this conversation
If you're in another situation you can eh have a dialog but be sure to keep it clear of argumentative
The tone of the conversation can change they can become annoyed with you
Framing effect nice
Avoid tone and just use corporate talk
Choose a song:
1. 1 minute

J.K. (Chief DS at Nebula): I can tell you, at least for our listeners, the more engineering skills you have, the more valuable you're going to be in the market.
J.K.: Data Science, yes is very cool, but the number of unfilled openings in data science is a fraction of engineering roles, even for related roles (i.e. ML Engineers, Data Engineers, etc.). Data science skills absolutely make you a better value-add in those roles.
K.J.: That supports a lot of the data I've been seeing. The number of data engineering roles that are open right now compared to data science roles is right around 2:1.
Listen to this episode from Ken's Nearest Neighbors on Spotify. Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Jon Krohn. Jon is the host of the Super Data Science podcast, a cofounder of Nebula, and force in the data science space. In this episode we learn how Jon became the biggest podcaster in data science, the difference between type 1 and type 2 ...
is that a meme in your pocket or are you just happy to see me
Who is KJ and JK and why do americans have a bajillion names
doesnt matter. bc you probs wont listen to the podcast anyway
One of the researchers is J.K rowling
I thought of an otn and it was life-notfound-exception and people deemed it as offensive
happy to see you
I just couldnât believe it
Yea why aren't we talking about this!!
This is where society has come to. Nobody has a god damn backbone anymore
Monolithic Java Nightmare is offensive
Yeah, ping an admin
i have one :3
anyway KJ is Ken Jee and JK is Jon Krohn, host of the Super Data Science podcast. i was also selected for one of his podcast Q&A's
but that one was a while back
you were a guest?
no. my question selected for the Q&A
oh
Life-NotFound-Exception literally has multiple interpretations. It could be a name of an exception for developing a game where a character or a player has 0 HP
it's just not that good. besides, they aren't just added because you think it's funny, it needs to come up organically
But people want to associate that otn as offensive
What about life-found-exception
People or a person
Two people
offensive because it was so bad
Iâm not saying names
Lmao
I wouldnt say that is all of society
but SOCIETY
Okay sure
*humor
it's not exceptional
What about exceptional exception
nah
If you want to program an instance where a user can loot a dead characterâs body
discord isn't a video game
For items
it's, though
I just thought of that joke "life-notfound-exception" and had a sensible chuckle to myself
Exactly
it's still 2-1 against
But people are too sensitive these days
That's hilarious
dawg, it's not because people are too sensitive that they don't find it funny
No checks the logs.
huh?
People seriously thought it was offensive
Youâre the only one here who doesnât find it funny
Seru laughed, Sorrow laughed and I laughed
You have my vote
I donât want anyone to go to an Andrew Schulz stand-up comedy show if they thought that otn was offensive
đ
