Generally because it has a known username and unlimited access to your computer. If someone were to try and get into your system, root is the first thing they'll try. Otherwise they have to guess your username and password, which is more work. With your own user, you also get access to the auth log for your user, and if you really need root powers, you can add yourself to the sudoers group at setup

apparently you can use the hosts file to do cool things with it

like emulate subdomains locally with app.localhost for example, which maps to localhost, neat

yeah, on a browser, app.localhost maps to just localhost

but you cant cURL it

if you want to curl it

add it to the hosts file, i recommend the hosts editor that comes with powertoys, neat lil tool

with it you can curl app.localhost just fine and it redirects to localhost

the neat part about this is: cookies need at least one dot in the domain name to be saved, so you can save cookies for localhost with this

so if you want to do, app1.sub.localhost and app2.sub.localhost, you can save cookies to sub.localhost and access it from both

localhost is just a DNS thingie that takes you to 127.0.0.1

its pretty complex ngl, i dont understand it well

and on linux you have this thing called systemd-resolved that automatically maps all *.localhost to 127.................

i just ran my apps with different ports and it worked

app1 saves a cookie to the parent domain and app2 reads it

the best part about it is that it took almost no set up to get done, i just changed the .env files a bit to point all apps to app.localhost, no code or OS changes

as opposed to the standard workflow at my company, which had 2 pages worth of documentation just to get this damn cookie to work
